Lighting, ventilation, fireproofing, ‘ascending rooms', cements, acoustics, the organ, the record-breaking iron dome, and the organisation of internal spaces were all attempts to attain progress - and subject to intense public scrutiny. From iron structures to terracotta, from the education of women to the abolition of slavery, in the making of the Royal Albert Hall scientific knowledge and socio-cultural reform were intertwined. This book shows, for the first time, how the Royal Albert Hall's building was itself a crucible for innovation. Illustrious techniques from antiquity were reimagined for the new mechanical age, placing the building at the heart of a process of collecting, describing, and systematising arts and practices. Drawing from early Florentine chronicles and previously unpublished archival documents, The Ponte Vecchio: Architecture, Politics, and Civic Identity in Late Medieval Florence (Brepols, 2024) by Dr. Theresa Flanigan traces the history of the Ponte Vecchio, focusing on the current bridge's construction after the flood of 1333. Much of the Ponte Vecchio's original fourteenth-century appearance is now obscured beneath later accretions, often mistakenly interpreted as original to its medieval character. To the contrary, as argued in this book and illustrated by new reconstruction drawings, the mid-trecento Ponte Vecchio's vaulted substructure was technically advanced, its urban superstructure was designed in accordance with contemporary Florentine urban planning strategies, and its "beautiful and honorable" appearance was maintained by government regulations. The documents also reveal new information about the commission and rental of its famous shops. Relying on these sources, this study offers a more complete history of the Ponte Vecchio, adding significantly to what is currently known about the bridge's patronage and construction, as well as the aims of civic architecture and urban planning in late medieval Florence. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. In this episode, Magdalena Biniaś-Szkopek and Darius von Güttner join host Susannah Lyon-Whaley to discuss their Polish Queens project, which examines Polish queens' roles as spouses, mothers, and queens. The project is also interested in looking into the emotional side of queenship and the emotions of the individual women themselves. Guest Bios:Magdalena Biniaś-Szkopek, Ph.D., Professor at UAM, Department of Archivistics, Faculty of History, Director of the Polish Academy of Sciences Kornik Library. Her areas of research interest include the history of late medieval Poland, Poland of the Jagiellonians, church and secular chancelleries in the Middle Ages and modern times, changes in the institution of marriage in Poland as well as in Europe in the fifteenth century, archival science with a particular focus on issues related to diplomacy, the development of chancery forms in history. She is the author of three monographs including Spouses before the court of the bishop of Poznań in the first quarter of the 15th century, Institute of History of the Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań 2019 (Małżonkowie przed sądem biskupiego oficjała poznańskiego w pierwszej ćwierci XV wieku, Wydawnictwo Instytutu Historii UAM, Poznań 2019). She is the author of more than 30 studies and scientific articles. She is currently the grant manager of the project "Polish queens of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries as wives and mothers” (2022 - 2026). Darius von Güttner is a historian of East Central Europe with a particular interest in cultural aspects of transmission of ideas and identity; Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the Royal Society of Arts; General Editor of series “East Central Europe” published by Brepols Publishers. Professor von Güttner completed his PhD at the University of Melbourne and now serves as the Dean of the Australian Catholic University's Canberra Campus. His book, Poland, Holy War, and the Piast Monarchy, challenges long-held beliefs about Poland's involvement in religious conflicts, specifically the Crusades. Beyond medieval and early modern Europe, his research has broadened to tackle global history and the societal roles of elite women, such as Bona Sforza, Queen of Poland and her mother Isabella d'Aragona. As Shaping Archaeological Archives: Dialogues between Fieldwork, Museum Collections, and Private Archives (Brepols, 2023) uncovers, much of this data has often ended up in physical - or, more recently, digital - archives and left untouched for years, despite containing critical information. But as many recent research projects explore how best to unleash the potential of these archives through publication, digitization, and improved accessibility, attention is now turning to the best practices that should underpin this trend. In this volume, scholars turn their attention to how best to work with and shape archaeological archives, and what this means for the field as a whole. The majority of case studies here explore archaeological sites in the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, some of which are conflict zones today. However, the contributions also showcase more broadly the depth of research on archaeological archives as a whole, and offer reflections upon the relationship between archaeological practices and archival forms. In so doing, the volume is able to offer a unique dialogue on best practices for the dissemination and synthetization of knowledge from archives more generally, whether physical or digital. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the anchoress and mystic who, in the late fourteenth century, wrote about her visions of Christ suffering, in a work since known as Revelations of Divine Love. She is probably the first named woman writer in English, even if questions about her name and life remain open. Her account is an exploration of the meaning of her visions and is vivid and bold, both in its imagery and theology. From her confined cell in a Norwich parish church, in a land beset with plague, she dealt with the nature of sin and with the feminine side of God, and shared the message she received that God is love and, famously, that all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well. What do Ligeti and his music have to say to us in our post-postmodernist age? Why do his works still fascinate us so much? This book offers new readings of core compositions such as "Aventures", "Lontano", "Le Grand Macabre", the "Holderlin Fantasies" and "Galamb borong". Google is an index, as was the first bible concordance, completed in 1230 under the direction of a French Dominican scholar named Hugo de Saint-Cher. Yet holds the eel of science by the tail (book 1, lines 279-80) He also references Nicholas Carr's article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” (The Atlantic, July/Aug 2008), and the book based upon it, The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains (Norton, 2011), both of which make an argument against shallow reading that Dennis argues goes all the way back to medieval critiques of the index. In this episode we talk with researcher Maria Sorokina about her work on the medieval theological debates on astrology. Her PhD, “Les théologiens face à la question de l’influence céleste. Science et foi dans les commentaires des Sentences (v. 1220-v. 1340)”, studies the how astrology is dealt in the commentaries to the Sentences of Peter Lombard. This is a continuation of her MA research on these type debates in the “Summa de astris” of Gérard de Feltre. Over the past two centuries, archaeologists have found bones, footprints, and artifacts showing that people like ourselves have existed on earth for many millions of years. But many scientists have forgotten or ignored these remarkable facts. Why? Primarily because they contradict the now dominant evolutionary views about human origins and antiquity. According to these views, humans like ourselves have existed for only about 100,000 or 200,000 years, and before that there were only more primitive human ancestors. This evolutionary paradigm, to which influential groups of scientists are deeply committed, has acted as a "knowledge filter." And the filtering, intentional or not, has left us with a radically incomplete set of facts for building our ideas about human origins. Recovering the complete set of facts takes us on a fascinating expedition, across five continents to various archaeological sites, some long forgotten, some the center of ongoing controversy. On the other hand, the complete set of facts is consistent with the accounts of extreme human antiquity found in the Puranas, the historical writings of ancient India. Michael A. James L. Smith is a Visiting Research Fellow at the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute, Trinity College Dublin. His research focuses on intellectual history, medieval abstractions and visualisation schemata, environmental humanities and water history. His first monograph, Water in Medieval Intellectual Culture: Case-Studies from Twelfth-Century Monasticism was published by Brepols in 2017. James is the editor of The Passenger: Medieval Texts and Transits (Punctum, 2017), and co-editor of a themed collection for the Open Library of the Humanities on ‘New Approaches to Medieval Water Studies’ (forthcoming, 2018). He is currently shaping a digital/environmental humanities project titled ‘Deep Mapping the Spiritual Waterscape of Ireland’s Lakes: The Case of Loch Derg, Donegal’. This paper, ‘Toxic Emotions: Riparian Personification and Pollution, Past, Present and Future’, was delivered at ‘The Future of Emotions: Conversations Without Borders’ at The University of Western Australia, in June 2018.
