Rishi Sunak has pledged to end the 'political correctness' that stops police arresting child sex abusers from ethnic minority backgrounds. The scandals of Rotherham, Rochdale, Telford show how badly things can go wrong for victims when the perpetrators are seen to be beyond the law. But Labour's West Yorkshire mayor has called it 'dog whistle politics' - and some are wondering why the Conservatives are borrowing the far right language of Tommy Robinson. Is it possible to have a nuanced debate? And the Italian newspapers are writing today about our 'Fifteen Hour Dover Brexit queues'. Tuition inflation has risen at a faster rate than the cost of medical services, child care, and housing. While generous financial aid means that students usually pay far less than the “sticker price” of tuition, the net price of public four-year colleges has still more than doubled since the turn of the century. Join me today as tear apart the ridiculous case that Dog Whistle Politics is driving these costs in higher education, an assertion made in the piece by moveon.org and Demos (link below). Thursday, April 28th, 2022   Ian Haney López is the Chief Justice Earl Warren Professor of Public Law at the University of California, Berkeley. He specializes in race and racism. His focus for the last decade has been on the use of racism in electoral politics, and how to respond. We discuss strategic racism and its antidote: race-class fusion politics.    Strategic racism is a divide and conquer scam by elites that pushes us to hate each other while they rig the system for themselves. Race-class fusion politics is the antidote because it rejects the con and builds power with others across differences. Perhaps the real radicalism of race-class fusion politics today is the core radicalism of American democracy – a way of pushing power downward and outward to citizens.   Follow Ian Haney López on Twitter: https://twitter.com/ianhaneylopez   Follow Mila on Twitter: https://twitter.com/milaatmos    Follow Future Hindsight on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/futurehindsightpod/   Want to be on Future Hindsight? In the second episode of our series on Critical Race Theory, Will (Political Host) talks with one of the foremost experts on CRT, Professor Ian Lopez. Professor Lopez is more than just a academic who teaches it, but is also an understudy of Derrick Bell who often is credited as one of the originators of critical race theory. Unlike the first in the series, where we speak with Yale Professor Daniel Hosang, and break down some of the basic principles of CRT, Professor Lopez goes into the weeds a little bit deeper and talks about the significance of Dog Whistle Politics and how it is being used as a tool to manipulate voters, and is used by both Republicans and Democrats alike. The conversation then turns to the work he's done to research aspects of CRT in our national discourse with the Race-Class Narrative Project. For more information about Professor Ian Lopez, please visit his website:https://ianhaneylopez.comIf you want to learn more about the Race-Class Narrative Project visit:https://www.demos.org/campaign/race-class-narrative-projectIf you'd like to take the free Race-Class Academy course mentioned in the show visit: https://race-class-academy.comGuest Bio:Ian Haney López is a law professor at UC Berkeley who studies racism. Ian has since actively promoted the idea of a race-class fusion as the basis for a multi-racial progressive majority. He co-chaired the AFL-CIO's Advisory Council on Racial and Economic Justice, along with Dorian Warren and Ana Avendaño, and founded the Race-Class Narrative Project, along with Anat Shenker-Osorio and Heather McGhee. In 2014, Ian Haney Lopez introduced an important new term to the field of political communication with his book, Dog Whistle Politics. In it, he explained how politicians have used carefully coded language to stir up racial anxiety and resentment to divide Americans and win elections. Political strategists and progressive leaders are struggling to counter the insidious power of racial appeals in American politics. Now, Ian Haney Lopez is back with potentially powerful, research-based solutions. In this episode of Achieve Great Things, we’ll talk about insights and ideas from his book, Merge Left: Fusing Race and Class, Winning Elections, and Saving America.

Dog whistle politics is a long held strategy of American politics. George talks to Ian Haney Lopez, Professor of Public Law at UC Berkeley, about how the rich and powerful use racism as a weapon to sow a divide between race and class. This divide has only been made clearer during the pandemic and the weeks of uprisings around racial justice. But if we name this strategy, perhaps we can merge race and class and build the country we want. A multiracial democracy that works for all of us. Ian Haney Lopez is Chief Justice Earl Warren Professor of Public Law at UC Berkeley and Director of the Racial Politics Project at the Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society. His latest book is Merge Left: Fusing Race and Class, Winning Elections, and Saving America. In this episode of Who Belongs? we hear from a three-guest panel of Berkeley faculty who provide various perspectives on the different forms of racism we’ve been witnessing since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. We hear about the experiences of Asian Americans who are facing a surge in hate crimes, the disparate impacts on black and brown communities in terms of the rates of death, and about how politicians are using the crisis to engage in racial fear mongering. But the panelists don’t focus so much on the incidents themselves as on the structures that have created the conditions for these forms of racism to emerge with such force. The panelists examine these issues by placing them in historical, social, and political contexts so we can think about how to respond to the crisis in ways that doesn’t reinforce the structures that set the stage for what we’re currently experiencing. The guests are Catherine Ceniza Choy, who is a Professor of Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies, and Comparative Ethnic Studies; Ian Haney López, who is a Professor of Law and Director of the Racial Politics Project, and the author of Dog-Whistle Politics, and the more recent book Merge Left; and Osagie K. Obasogie, who is a Professor of Bioethics and chair of our Institute’s Health Disparities research cluster. One of the most consistent criticisms of the government is that they keep coming up with ideas that sound nice in theory but in reality are completely unworkable. The obvious one is their belief that electric vehicles will save the planet because they’re not burning petrol.  We should all drive one and thus climate change will be mitigated. Now while that’s true when a few people drive electric cars, it’s not the silver bullet answer for all. It ignores the amount of emissions required to build the car, the oil in the plastics and the mining of the material for the batteries. It also ignores the disposal of the spent batteries which is an environmental catastrophe in itself. It’s the same when it comes to blind faith in the value of cycleways. If we’re offered safe cycling highways we will choose to avoid the car congestion and get on a bike.  But that ignores the sheer size of our cities.  Our average commutes are some of the longest in the world because we’re so spread out. And we’re hilly.  The image of demure ladies pedaling their designer bikes alongside the canals of Amsterdam ain’t happening here.Cycleways are valuable in dangerous stretches of road  (by the way Island bay was not a dangerous road for cyclists), but not the answer in our non intensive cities. But it’s not just this lot who like to say things that sound good but won’t work. This morning I woke to the news that the National Party is looking into fining the parents of young people who leave school early, and don't go into education or training. Up to $3000 apparently.Damn right the dim-witted might say.  Parental Responsibility.  There’s 18,000 16 to 18 year olds on the benefit.  How could parents ever let their kids embark on worthless lives. But honestly, if a parent is the type who has been unable to inspire their children in to a productive lifestyle in the first 16 years of their life do you think they’re really the type to happily pay a 3 grand fine.David Seymour ripped it apart in seconds this morning.  Kids in poor areas, with dropkick students, with no jobs, no polytechs, no trade training. And then you fine their family for the systemic failure. It joins the fine line of unworkable stuff that’s easy to say on talkback like sterilising the serial single mums or issuing parental licences.  One of the other ideas national is thinking about is getting gang members to declare their illegal income before they can receive a benefit. I mean really.  Excuse me Mister Mongrel Mob, how much do you make from meth? It’s dumb dog whistle politics and it’s more and more popular ever since Boris won Brexit with a lie on a bus and an orange skinned businessman starting saying whatever popped into his head or on a Fox News feed. And they do because they think we’re dumb enough to swallow and yet they think we’ll then respect them enough to give them our vote.

A segment of the population is responding to the politics of fear and hate, and facts don't matter when they don't align with a world view that paints immigrants, Muslims, African Americans, and other marginalized communities as a threat. As more people become emboldened to come out of the shadows to spread backward ideas, more in step with Nazi Germany or the antebellum south, it's more important than ever for people of conscience to hold themselves accountable for making America Great for all of us. In doing so, the dog whistle was heard as a much wider criticism of the social welfare state, and thus a direct attack not just on minorities, but on the middle class.
