Morgan Oughton makes the jump from her New York City design job to working on a Live Aboard charter… all while launching the legendary Spacefish Army outerwear line. Her designs and products can now be found around the globe in retail dive centers and watersports venues, as well anywhere that ships online. She goes deep into life on a liveaboard charter, and how that lifestyle works (and how it sometimes doesn't). More surprising, she finds her life partner AND manages to launch Spacefish Army, all while working 16 hour days (and keeping the relationship a secret). This is the interview for anyone considering working on a live aboard yacht as a Bosun, Steward, Divemaster, Instructor, or anything remotely similar. Finally, she talks about how to know when you've hit success, the difference between happiness and satisfaction, how to balance work and personal time, and what the future looks like for Spacefish Army. – Morgan Oughton quit her job in NYC, and became a Divemaster and Instructor for the Aggressor Fleet of diving liveaboard yachts. She fell in love with diving, and during that transformative adventure found a way to fuse her passion of diving, artwork and design into something useful for all of us: Spacefish Army. Diving needed to break free of the “bland”, and Morgan did it. Not only did she inject life & color into scuba diving wear, she brought practicality from knowing what it takes to work as a dive professional in the most demanding setting for any diving pro. From pockets to sunblock, eco-friendly pieces, Mo and her wildly friendly team have you COVERED, head to toe. Her first entrepreneurial endeavor was selling worms when she was 8 years old. It must have paid off because Melody DiCroce is now an online business strategist who started her business from a sailboat in the jungles of Guatemala and has since worked with some of the biggest names in the online space. She's an anomaly because she's tech-savvy and has what it takes to compete in today's online business space, and she's also a content creator with a keen ability to flip the switch from her analytical brain to her creative brain.I know this because I've spent the last 16 years watching her develop her craft. I'm married to her and biased, of course. In this episode, we talk about what it was like to live and run a business from a sailboat, work-life balance, our identity and the way we view ourselves, making your weaknesses your superpowers, and thriving as an introvert.“In life, we have two currencies; time and money. When you spend time, you can save money. When you spend money, you can save time. No matter what you want to accomplish, you'll spend one of those. Time or money… neither is wrong, but just remember – only one of them can you make back.”It was one of the most difficult interviews I've done for this show – I was so nervous – but an absolute pleasure to chat with one of the strongest and most talented women I know. This week we are talking about my favourite kind of sailing! Bareboat cruising or living on the boat for a few days, weeks, months or years! I really enjoy the pace and lifestyle of being on a boat. Don't get me wrong, a garden and yard for the kids to play in is also great, but I do love spending extended days on a boat. This episode is geared to those sailors who are thinking about spending more and more time living on a boat. Perhaps you're looking to do some bareboat chartering in the Caribbean, or maybe you're wanting to venture off for a week or two to explore your surroundings. This is the episode for you! Support me on Patreon! Sign Up for the Podcast Be sure to sign up for my Podcast on iTunes or Spotify or find it on any other podcast player! Who is the Liveaboard Sailor? The liveaboard sailor is someone who is wanting to spend more and more time on a boat. It could be for a long weekend of boat camping, or, more likely, for a week or two of chartering. Which courses will help you to prepare? What are some sailing aspects you should focus on? What are some extra skills you should consider acquiring? These are some of the things I am going to touch on in this episode. Which key courses should you take? Liveaboard sailing is all about planning, adapting and managing changes that come your way. Prepare your trip plan (see Episode 7: Day Trip Planning for some advice), prepare your crew (check out Bonus Episode 12: Crew Selection), and get ready to enjoy everything sailing has to offer! This is one of my favourite ways to spend time on the boat. So, here is a short list of key courses I think you should take to step into liveaboard/bareboat cruising: Intermediate Cruising: for Sail Canada our bareboat cruising course is called Intermediate Cruising. This course teaches you the fundamentals of living on a boat. Provisioning, boat systems, passage planning, etc. Intermediate Coastal Navigation: I would highly recommend that you have the Intermediate Coastal Navigation course under your belt and you have practiced plotting on your charts. When you are out sailing you will want to be able to take your bearings, plot them and move on to the next item on your list quickly. What have you been practicing & learning? For this level of sailing I am not going to focus on certifications you should have, but more so on things you should have knowledge about. These include: boat systems: head & black water, fresh water, grey water, basic engine maintenance, galley cooking systems, and electronics on the boat. provisioning: ice box, refrigeration, cooler, fresh water capacity, and desalinator troubleshooting. sailing maneuvers: crew overboard, reefing, heaving-to, docking, anchoring --> should all be easy-peasy by this stage. Living on a sailboat under the California sun with a comfortable climate and amazing islands to explore nearby sounds phenomenal, and my guests Marissa and Chris from Sailing Avocet admit that the liveaboard life in California is indeed pretty darn nice. However, there are inherent frustrations that come with this lifestyle no matter how nice the setting is, and of course I ask Marissa and Chris to share some of the downsides, too. This episode has great tips for anyone considering the liveaboard life, especially in a marina, and we talk all about practical matters like costs and quality of marina facilities, how much boat work is too much to do in your slip and more. With a liveaboard, you take all of your stuff with you on board at the beginning of the trip and the boat heads out but it doesn't come back to shore until the end of the trip. This has a few key benefits and while it may seem like the expensive option to start with, it can actually be the cheaper option in the long run. So, let's dive deeper and see why you need to experience a liveaboard.
Tony Jones has lived afloat for over 16 years and has written two practical guides to boating, as well as regular articles for Waterways World magazine. In discussion with editor Bobby Cowling, he describes his unconventional journey to boat-ownership, how the waterways inspired his writing career and his unusual solution to creating more space aboard his floating home.
My first guests are Darren and Amanda from SV Panda and oh boy do they have a story to tell! Their journey has taken them from Florida and the Caribbean to the UK, and one could say they took the scenic route as they crossed the Atlantic via Greenland. They've done all this in two years - did I mention they started with zero sailing experience? Not only do Amanda and Darren share the details of their adventure but we talk about what the liveaboard sailing is actually like, both the good and the bad. They also shed light to the financial aspects of sailing, like the cost of their bluewater sailboat and its outfitting, and the on-going monthly costs of liveaboard sailing. Here's what you can expect from this episode of Liveaboard Sailing Podcast:5:10 The reasons why Amanda and Darren decided to abandon a comfortable life on land to go sailing10:40 The reality of the sailing lifestyle 15:30 How Amanda and Darren made the switch to the liveaboard sailing life in a matter of months21:20 Going from zero sailing experience to crossing the Atlantic via Greenland28:10 Their long term financial approach that allows them to keep sailing33:40 The cost of their bluewater sailboat and outfitting + monthly costs of liveaboard sailing38:05 Two things they would do differently knowing everything they know now after two years of sailing41:20 Buying a sailboat without much experience44:10 Darren and Amanda's advice to aspiring liveaboard sailors For more of Amanda and Darren, follow Sailing Panda on Youtube, Instagram, Facebook and Patreon. My comfort zone was killing me!... so i made the jump into something I knew little about and started welcoming challenges with a smile. The universe doesn't appreciate cowardice and staying within comfort zones, in fact there is a strong case to be made that opportunity is withheld from those who do not take risks. Do I know what I am doing? Hell no, but that's the fun! Jump in for a great convo while we prepare to ride out a hurricane in my sailboat.

Scuba travel has never been high on my wishlist but after talking to my three guests on Episode 151 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast about their diving trips all around the world, I'm beginning to think otherwise! Scuba diving holidays are special - and my first guest Ella Loeffler should know as in the short few years since she first learnt scuba diving, she's tried it out in quite a number of places around the world. Liveaboard diving sounds especially good to me - kind of like a separate trip within a trip where you get to hang out with like minded travellers and locals. After Ella I chat with Deborah Dickson-Smith who loves diving so much she bought a scuba diving travel agency! She's got a long list of great dive experiences but also some wishlist ideas to experience the best scuba diving in the world sometime. Finally, I talk with Talon Windwalker, who has done work as a dive instructor and has done many special diving trips with his daughter. He also emphasises the many-faceted benefits of combining scuba diving with travelling: seeing new (underwater) landscapes, getting to know another side of local cultures and creating incredible memories. Until you do it, it's tough to imagine what full-time cruising will be like. You may have done a bareboat charter before, but is that really what it's like when it's your full-time life? Or it is really just a series of "fixing your boat in exotic places?" Will you like it? Will you be bored? Carolyn Shearlock has been cruising almost ten years now, and admits that no two days are alike. Here, she tells of a fairly typical day at anchor in the Bahamas. Jim is a cancer survivor, has been married for over thirty-five years, has four grown children and two great children. Recently, Jim and his wife Stephanie JUST SAID YES to their dream of living on a boat. Join their adventure, which is chronicled on Our Floating Home. Jim and I spoke about growing up boating, how they decided to live aboard, finding the perfect boat, and a whole lot more. This one is definitely worth a listen all the way through as Jim packed a lot of inspiring advice into this half hour, much more than I could fit in the blog. Enjoy! On early boating experiences.....I grew up boating. My grandparents had a cottage on a Lake in Western Massachusetts. My parents grew up in that cottage. I remember I learned how to water ski there on this little 14’ boat with a 40 hp Evinrude engine. I just really love the water and boating. My parents had a boat. My older brother is big time into boating. My own boating career started four years ago. We bought a 30’ Sea Ray that we kept at the top of Chesapeake Bay. On deciding to live aboard.....A little more than a year ago, Stephanie was retiring from her career and came home and said ‘I think its time for a big adventure.' We didn’t know quite what that meant. Eventually she said hey, what if we lived on a boat? We sold our house and we bought a 50’ Carver motor yacht. On how the adventure is going so far.....We are so in love with this boat. I loved my Sea Ray, the only difference is Sea Ray had so many great t shirts and Carver makes nothing! We have been loving life. It is slower, easier and we can feel disconnected from everything so much easier. It's an amazing lifestyle. On how boating equals stress relief.....We had about an hour and twenty minute drive on Fridays from our home to our boat and we could feel ourselves de-stressing on the drive. When we stepped on the boat, 100% of whatever was going on that week was forgotten. It was an amazing way to de-stress. We could go ten minutes, drop anchor, and feel like we were on vacation. On how to follow their adventure.....We started a blog – ourfloatinghome.com – everybody was so curious about where we were going and how to stay in touch. I just wrote a blog post called ‘Simple, Slower, and Chores’ and I describe how simple life is on the boat. We get up, I go up and watch the sun go up over the water, have breakfast. I love watching boats. We’re always looking at the water. It’s a slower way of life. We have no commute. We’re not dealing with traffic. We’ve got reality TV just outside our boat. And then for chores, when I had my home, I was tired of cutting the grass and shoveling the driveway, all that stuff. The thing about the boat, it’s always gotta be clean, something always gas to be fixed, and I don’t mind! I would so much rather wash and wax my boat than mow my lawn or weed whack! On planning their route, or not.....It’s less planned out than you might think. We came up with an 18-month plan. It’s not bothering us that we don’t have a specific reservation or know where we’re going. I’ve structured my coaching business to do three days per week. All the calls happen Tuesday-Thursday. Friday through Monday we can be mobile. If we pull into somewhere we love we can stay there. We’re totally flexible and loving not having an exact idea of what we’ll be doing. On useful technology for living aboard.....I have so many apps. I have an app called BoatTracker which will tell you your average speed, top speed, how long you were out. That’s a very good way for me to keep track of oil changes and things like that. It will also show you with a satellite where you were with your entire trip. There’s another one I got called Anchor Alarm. When you set your anchor, you use your finger and draw a little area that the boat is allowed to swing. If it heads out of the circle you have drawn, it will alert you. The other thing I use is Navionics. It’s always updating and is really cool. On 'Just Saying Yes'.....Some people say you should have waited a year and maybe, but are you ever really ready? Sometimes you just have to say yes and go for it. Sometimes you can overthink things, the what if. When you get really excited about doing something big in life, you get romantically excited about it but then the other side of our brain kicks in and we start playing the what if game. On using Social Media to further boating education.....We both belong to a lot of these Facebook groups. There’s a facebook group called LiveAboard, Trawler Living, Carver facebook groups. There's boat repairs, so many things you can learn from other people. There’s an education out there if you’re willing to look and be open minded. On possible future boating plans.....There’s a thing called the Great Loop! We started reading these books and it’s something we are considering. We’ve read several stories of people who do the Great Loop, it takes them about a year. One of the things that appeals to us when you do the great loop, most of it is slow. You're seeing parts of this country that nobody really sees. Please, listen to the whole podcast. The blog really doesn't do this one justice! Happy boating! And to all the Northern listeners, I hope you delay the shrink wrapping as long as possible!

See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
