Angela is joined by Tara Vander Dussen and Natalie Kovarik, for a very special episode in which they discuss various aspects of farming and food production, focusing on dairy farming, beef, and poultry. They address common concerns and misconceptions surrounding dairy products, such as the inflammatory effects of dairy and the presence of hormones, and the differences between grass-fed and grain-fed beef, the labelling confusion in the poultry industry, and the impact of different farming practices on the environment, emphasising the importance of food choice and transparency, encouraging listeners to make informed decisions based on their own preferences and values. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is ongoing research suggesting that milk does not cause inflammation, but the effects may vary depending on factors such as added sugars. Hormones naturally occur in dairy products, but the concern is more about added hormones. In the United States, RBST is no longer used in milk production. Homogenisation is a process that breaks up the cream in milk to create a consistent texture. Non-homogenised milk may require shaking before consumption or may have cream that rises to the top. Grass-fed, grass-finished beef may have higher omega-3 content compared to grain-finished beef. However, the omega-3 content in milk is generally low, regardless of the type of cow or diet. Food labelling can be confusing, and it is often more helpful to directly source food from local farmers to ask questions and gain transparency about the farming practices. BEST MOMENTS "There is a lot of new research that is really positive in milk, not causing inflammation, depending on, you know, are you adding, you know, sugar to it as a chocolate milk, all these different things that you can or cannot do." "I think if you have the means and access to supporting local and buying direct from the farmer, I think that's kind of the point, right? Cause then you can ask all those questions." "I think sometimes we get so in the weeds about the conversations of, you know, like you said, Omega threes versus Omega sixes. And, um, and we kind of lose sight of the big picture, which is, you know, meat is one of the most, um, milk to, you know, whole, whole animal proteins are one of the best things we can put in our body." "So there's a lot, I think when it comes to the environment part, that isn't necessarily true about, um, practices. And then also I think we're really, really losing sight of, um, what are, what actually happened to our bodies." Jane Dukes, associate director, Value Chain and Consumer Affairs, speaks with Tara Vander Dussen and Brandi Buzzard Frobose. Tara is an environmental scientist, dairy farmer and online influencer. Some of you may know her as the “New Mexico Milkmaid” on social media. She's also a mom to two adorable little girls, and the co-founder of Elevate Ag. Brandi calls herself a Kansas “cowgirl.” She's also a rancher, mom and author of a blog, Buzzard's Beat. She has a suite of resources to help advocate for agriculture called “Amped Up Advocacy” Both of these women are tireless advocates for agriculture with tens of thousands of followers on social media. “I think to some extent we don't give grocery shoppers enough credit for what they can handle. There's always been a wall, like we want to give them information but not too much because we don't want to scare them off…but I feel like if grocery shoppers can see how we truly do care and we are doing what we need to do, even if that means expensive medical treatment to save an animal and a calf, that's the right thing to do.” - Brandi Buzzard FroboseConsumers are three to four generations removed from the farm and want more information about how their food is grown and raised. Farmers and ranchers are feeling the pressure of a changing dynamic and perceptions of the food chain. “If every single farmer and rancher shared their story online, I don't think there would be enough of us sharing. Every single farmer rancher out there is going to reach somebody different and that's why it's so important to have so many of us sharing our message is because we're going to connect and relate with people differently.” - Tara Vander DussenThis Week's Podcast:Meet Tara Vander Dussen an environmental scientist, dairy farmer and online influencer and and Brandi Buzzard Frobose a rancher, mom and author of a blog, Buzzard's BeatDiscover the benefits in “sharing your story” in agriculture and the trust that action can foster in consumersExplore the common misconceptions around “factory farming” and how this ambiguous term has created a stigma around larger operations in the minds of grocery shoppersClick the SpeakPipe link and let us know what your questions are! We will try to answer as many of them as we can on podcasts throughout the year.

Natalie Kovarik and Tara Vander Dussen are two remarkable ladies. They have done so much to advance the true side of agriculture online in a time where there is so much misinformation spread about ag. They reached out to me to have a conversation about what they have learned and how they came together to start a course called Elevate Ag to help individuals navigate the difficult landscape of social media to tell their story of agriculture. Go to https://www.elevateyouragstory.com/ to sign up for this course
On this very special episode of Ag Chicks, I sit down with Cassandra, Stefanie, Natalie, Jenna, and Kirsten to discuss the pretty and gritty elements of women in agriculture. Link to Pretty & Gritty Jacket: https://www.tlazytboutique.com/product-page/pretty-gritty-canvas-jacket Link to shop Ag Chicks Merch: www.agchicks.net/shop More about today's guests: We are Cassandra and Stefanie Lepp, 2 sisters who run our family farm in Manitoba with our dad. We also keep him in line at his aerial spray business and do everything there but fly. Ground crew life is one of our favourite times of the year! I finished my business degree in 2010 and Stefanie got her interactive media arts diploma and modelled after high school. But both of us were drawn back the farm and what this lifestyle provides. We share our life on @thetulepps because representation matters and the world needs to know we do in fact look like farmers. Natalie Kovarik is the co-host of the popular podcast Discover Ag as well as the co-founder of Elevate Ag - an online course and community providing producers with the tools they need to successfully advocate and share online. She and her husband live in Central Nebraska where they own and operate Kovarik Cattle Co, a cow calf operation with a growing registered herd. For the past 2 years Natalie has been sharing her ranching and familying story online to showcase the beauty behind the western lifestyle as well as foster a community who supports and trusts in Agriculture as much as she does. Singer-songwriter Jenna Paulette — a cowgirl who came of age amid the gritty realities of ranch life — is part of Nashville's growing wave of female artists who are rewriting the rules and charting their own paths. Her finely calibrated blend of toughness and sensitivity is on full display in tracks like ”Country in the Girl” and “Pretty Ugly”, while current single “Slow Drawl” unleashes the sass and storytelling gleaned from those who precede her: The Chicks, Miranda Lambert, and Kacey Musgraves. Kirsten is a first generation rancHer living on and managing a ranch with her husband in Montana. You can find Kirsten on Instagram as @hashtagranchlife where she shares her journey into ranching, love of western fashion and all things ranch life! At Merck Animal Health, we are committed to our customers. We want farmers, ranchers and veterinarians to share their stories. We're releasing our third series of Caring for Animals and Creating Trust videos this month that shines a light on their backstories, what motivates them, what they care about and how they do what they do. Producers need to bridge a communication gap as consumers become further removed from the farm than ever before. The average American is three generations removed from the farm and they have questions about how their food is grown and raised. At the same time, shifting demographics contribute to a lack of trust in the food we eat, and questions arise about farmers and sustainability, animal welfare and production practices. While there's plenty of research trying to get to the bottom of what consumers want to know, what do we, in the food value chain wish consumers knew? And how do we help farmers, ranchers and veterinarians share their stories? “I am a busy veterinarian. I serve dairy and feedlot clients in southwest Kansas, and I wish consumers knew that at the end of the day, I'm feeding the same food that we're producing every day to my family. And it comes with that level of confidence in the safety and nutritious value of the food that we're producing, that I'm willing to put it on my table.” - Dr. Tera Barnhardt Merck Animal Health is committed to the well-being of our communities, our employees, and our customers. In this episode, Jane Dukes, Senior Manager with the https://www.merck-animal-health-usa.com/about-us/veterinary-and-consumer-affairs (Merck Animal Health Veterinary Consumer Affairs Team), speaks with Dr. Tera Barnhardt a cattle veterinarian and owner of Animal Welfare Consulting & Research, a large animal consulting veterinary practice and a devoted advocate for agriculture. Also joining us is social influencer https://nataliekovarik.com (Natalie Kovarik), a social entrepreneur, storyteller, ranch wife, mom and co-creator of https://elevateag.com (Elevate Ag), an online course that helps farmers and ranchers share their stories. “I definitely started out with an agriculture based community in the beginning. I just think, you kind of draw in like-minded people. But as I've grown and had success, I've definitely started reaching non-consumers. And I do have a lot of people who follow me that are outside of the industry. And I think that's one of the really rewarding things is to be able to kind of have one on one interaction with them….Like I said, being in control of being able to advocate for the industry and, and say things that I want to, that I know are going to reach people.” - Natalie Kovarik We know we need to tell our stories, but for many farmers and ranchers, there is perceived risk and a lack of time which might make them feel the benefits may not outweigh the risk. ElevateAg, co-founded by Natalie, is a resource producers can turn to to help them navigate sharing their story. This Week's Podcast: Meet Dr. Tera Barnhardt a cattle veterinarian and owner of Animal Welfare Consulting & Research and https://nataliekovarik.com (Natalie Kovarik), a social entrepreneur, storyteller, ranch wife, mom and co-creator of https://elevateag.com (Elevate Ag). Hear directly from producers on about what they want consumers to hear and explore the means in which they can share that story with them

On today's Mastermind episode, we're speaking with Michelle Mensing about how to package her offers to get more exposure. Michelle grew up on a family farm in southwest Iowa and was active in 4-H and FFA growing up. Following college, Michelle started her career in the agriculture industry and picked up a camera as a hobby in her free time. She loved how that creative outlet kept her connected to the family farm she grew up on. After a few years, she realized that there was a demand for all of the agriculture and western photos sitting on her computer. Several women she met in an online business group expressed the need for stock photos that resonated with their rural community, but struggled to have the time to get outside and take photos on their own farms and ranches while juggling their many responsibilities with work, kids, etc. Michelle decided to create a stock photo membership geared directly towards these small business owners so they had access to a library of images to help share their story online. Today she is here to mastermind ideas on how she can grow her business and source and convert more clients. In this episode we cover: How to pivot when packaging is creating a barrier for your clients Getting clear on your ideal client, how to reach them, and how to speak to them Ideas on additional packages as well as new deliverables to include in packages How to position yourself to be found by your ideal clients instead of reaching out with cold pitches Resources and links mentioned in this episode: Visit Michelle's website, Michelle Mensing Photography: https://michellemensingphotography.mypixieset.com/ Connect with @michellemensing.photography on Instagram Check out Michelle on Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/MichelleMensingPhotography/_created/ Want to be our next Mastermind podcast guest? A 2021 survey of food consumers by Kerry indicated that https://explore.kerry.com/sustainability-whitepaper-2021 (62% of North American consumers) sustainability as a strong influence when making food and beverage purchases, and say it's a greater priority when selecting dairy, meat, or alternative protein products. At the same time, consumer interest in plant-based products is growing – but is it more sustainable? Important to our discussion, the https://www.noaa.gov/news-release/increase-in-atmospheric-methane-set-another-record-during-2021 (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently reported) that “global emissions of methane surged by a record amount in 2021: 17 parts per billion, the largest amount recorded since systematic measurements began in 1983. Methane is 84 times more potent than carbon but breaks down faster. https://www.cnbc.com/2022/04/07/methane-emissions-surged-by-a-record-amount-in-2021-noaa-says-.html ((CNBC).) Critics are often quick to point the finger at agriculture, but may not know that cattle are actually part of the solution. This increased awareness and interest from consumers and the reality of our ever-changing environment means farmers – particularly those produce meat, milk and eggs – are receiving questions and input about how their farms impact the environment not only from grocery shoppers but also business investors. A study released by the International Food Information Council IFIC: https://foodinsight.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/IFIC-Regenerative-Ag-Consumer-Survey.pdf (Consumer Perspectives on Regenerative Ag) in February found that over half of those consumers surveyed have heard of organic farming, crop rotation and sustainable farming; fewer are familiar with regenerative agriculture (in research file); 4/10 consumers believe organic foods are more nutritious; 1/3 want food grown using regenerative ag (but few know what that is); 35% would purchase more expensive cereal if grown utilizing regenerative ag. But the good news is while many misconceptions exist about the sustainability of animal agriculture, data and science bring clarity to the sustainability story, helping stakeholders from farm to fork understand the progress made so far and focus on continuous improvement. In this episode, guests will discuss the farm to table perspective on sustainability including what consumers are looking for and the latest sustainability trends – and why it's important for agriculture to engage in the conversation about sustainability, whether on social media, in the board room, with financial institutions, or with other food stakeholders, what we can do better to be more effective and reach a broader audience, and the research and data that can help share a realistic view of what's happening on the farm. They will also discuss what farmers in the dairy and beef industries (in honor of Dairy Month in June) are doing today to continue improving their operations. On today's show we talk to Suzy Holman about how she uses alignment to create multi-million dollar businesses. Suzy Holman is the woman behind several multi million dollar companies including Suzy School and the Jovi patch. Suzy was born and raised in small(er) town Idaho with the mindset that female entrepreneurs don't exist. She can recall a core childhood memory attending a banquet, in a ribboned blue dress, watching her dad accept “businessman of the year” and thinking “I hope I marry a businessman someday.” It wasn't until college that she realized that not only do female entrepreneurs exist, she could be one herself. This led her down a many-year journey of fueling her passions with purpose and creating space where she could not only be the best version of herself, but she could help other women in her community do the same. In this episode we cover: Mom guilt and how you can be called to do something alongside motherhood How being true to herself has been the magic ingredient to every dream she's brought to fruition What alignment means to Suzy and why it's so important How to know when you're in alignment Our spouse's/support system's role in our alignment Why there's a disconnect in alignment for so many people Resources and links mentioned in this episode: Connect with Suzy on Instagram @suzyholman Visit Suzy's website, https://suzyschool.com/ Learn more about Jovi patch https://meetjovi.com/ Apply to our Mastermind, Elevate the Summit: https://www.elevateyouragstory.com/summit Learn more about our online course, Elevate Ag: https://www.elevateyouragstory.com/course Visit our website, https://www.elevateyouragstory.com/ Connect with @nataliekovarik and @taravanderdussen on Instagram Onsite Production: http://www.thegaugepodcast.com/ Be sure to hit subscribe so you never miss an episode!
