Bestselling Canadian writer Eliza Reid has written plenty of non-fiction, but she's just released her first novel, “Death on the Island.” It's a murder mystery involving diplomats in Iceland — a place that's quite familiar to her, considering she served as the country's first lady from 2016 to 2024. Eliza sits down with Tom Power to talk about her new book and the challenges she faced switching from writing fact to fiction.

They discuss Iceland's progress in gender equality, the importance of tourism to the country's economy, and the need for sustainable practices. Eliza also opens up about her experiences as a working mom and offers valuable insights on finding balance and being present in the moment. KEY TAKEAWAYS Iceland has made significant progress in gender equality, with nearly 50% of MPs being women and being ranked as the best country in the world for women by the World Economic Forum. The journey towards gender equality in Iceland has been a combination of top-down approaches, such as government legislation and quotas, and grassroots efforts to advocate for change and amplify underrepresented voices. Tourism is a vital sector for Iceland's economy, with the country offering a diverse range of attractions, including natural wonders, cultural festivals, and culinary experiences. Iceland has worked towards making tourism more sustainable by investing in infrastructure, encouraging year-round travel, and promoting ethical practices in the industry. BEST MOMENTS "Just because we're the closest doesn't mean we're there yet. We still have a lot of inequalities that we need to be tackling." "It's levelling the playing field for everyone. It's giving greater opportunities to people of all genders." "You can't just say, well, we've written a policy now. So we have a policy that things are going to be equal. And it's not really our fault if women aren't applying for the jobs or whatever it is." "I think it's fantastic because so often we will focus on the same old, same old destinations, you know. But we also want to be able to travel widely and have a rich experience." This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. First Lady of Iceland discusses her book "Secrets of the Sprakkar-Iceland's Extraordinary Women and How They Are Changing the World"
For Women's History Month, The Doorstep is highlighting steps being taken for greater global gender equality—a proposition that United Nations Secretary General António Guterres recently stated is "300 years away." What can societies do to increase the pace of change? The first lady of Iceland, author and entrepreneur Eliza Reid, joins co-hosts Nick Gvosdev and Tatiana Serafin to speak about Iceland's successes in attaining equality for all women and what cultural and policy frameworks can be exported to other countries in order to promote gender equality. What does "infrastructure for families" (ascribed to Senator Elizabeth Warren) mean on the ground? What challenges are most pressing? How can the media be a better "window on the world"?

Iceland's First Lady, Eliza Reid's recent book, The Sprakar: Iceland's Extraordinary Women, inspired this timely exploration of the policies, strategies and approaches Iceland has used to achieve its first place spot in gender equity. The word Sprakar means wise, powerful woman. Wow - a language with a name for a bad-ass woman! Here is some of what she has to say: Iceland holds to #1 spot in the world in gender equity according to the World Economic Forum Gender Gap Index. The US is ranked #53. Most striking, 88% of Icelandic women work outside the home while only 57.4% of US women work outside the home. What is going on in Iceland?! HELPING PARENTS HELPS US ALL Comprehensive healthcare for pregnant moms removes the burden of not having adequate prenatal and maternal care. The government provides leave to both parents - up to 9 months between the 2 parents. Subsidized high-quality childcare is available in most neighborhoods. The government offers pre-k education along with a traditional schooling system, plus after school programming. Iceland believes that supporting families supports society at large - and women who work. STRENGTH IN SISTERHOOD Women in Iceland have a long tradition of creating social networks and groups to foster connection. In the past, it may have been a knitting or crafting group or a group that organized around philanthropy, while today it may be a cold water swimming group, hiking, art or other interest group. STIGMA FREE SEXUALITY Iceland has a relatively stigma- free culture of sexuality. Transgender people feel alot of acceptance in Iceland. Iceland's results tell us when women and transgender people's sexuality is not judged and controlled, women experience more equity. CLAIMING THE CORPORATE PURSE STRINGS Iceland has adopted broad laws that require equity. Its pay equity law requires businesses to prove pay equity. It has also adopted a law to require 40% membership on corporate boards of directors. Both of these laws have led to significant progress on both issues. When we talk about what we can do to create ease, meaning and joy for women at work, Iceland may be the best place for us to look.
As women's rights are eroding in the United States, our Women's Day Off (the Internet) is becoming increasingly necessary. While we plan it, we take one more look at Iceland as a model for how to build a better society for everyone and particularly for women. Luckily we don't have to go too far back this time. We can look at the women who are there right now–specifically Iceland's first lady, Eliza Reid. In her book, Secrets of the Sprakkar, she tells the stories of extraordinary Icelandic women to illustrate how the country became a leader in gender equality. Jo and Eliza sat down together to talk about the book and how being a mom in Iceland is just different than in the US. With paid paternity leave, less guilt, less judgment, and a strong sense of sisterhood, there's so much we can learn from Eliza and her country. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Eliza Reid is the First Lady of Iceland. However, I know her from twenty years ago, when we were friends living in the same university dorm.Clearly, Eliza's life has taken twists and turns, so I wanted to talk to her about how to jump into a whole new kind of life–which is what she's done by learning a language and culture and starting over in a different country. We also talk about Eliza's new book called Secrets of the Sprakkar: Iceland's Extraordinary Women and How They Are Changing the World, and what we may be able to learn from Iceland. On Thursday's show: ERCOT is concerned high temperatures over the weekend could put a strain on the electricity grid and is asking plants to postpone scheduled maintenance so they'll be able to respond to the increased demand. Also this hour: Eliza Reid, the First Lady of Iceland, talks about how her country has managed to lead the world in equality for women and about her book, Secrets of the Sprakkar. She's one of the keynote speakers today at the Greater Houston Conference for Women. Plus we learn about the costs and challenges of hydrogen as an energy alternative. And we discover how wearable technology might inform the interrelationship between sleep and depression.
Eliza Reid could never have imagined that she would end up living in Iceland, let alone become the first lady of the country. While studying at Oxford, she met her future husband, and they went on to live a pretty normal existence. Then, in the space of just a couple of months, her husband became president of Iceland, and Eliza became first lady. It's an interesting role for someone who is passionate about gender equality, but Eliza is using it as a platform to inspire diversity and inclusion. In this episode, she shares her message about learning from others and committing to your decisions. She shares stories from her life, including how she rigged a competition to go on a date with her eventual husband, and how he ended up becoming president. We learn the Icelandic word for outstanding women, and how Eliza wrote a book based on that word. Eliza also teaches us that we are all role models, and that even if we're not famous, we're setting an example for everyone around us.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Canadian-born First Lady of Iceland Eliza Reid discusses her new book, "Secrets of the Sprakkar," about why Iceland is leading the charge in gender equality. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
There is an Icelandic word, sprakkar, that means outstanding women - and those women are at the heart of the book Secrets Of The Sprakkar: Iceland's Extraordinary Women And How They Are Changing The World. Iceland's first lady and author, Eliza Reid, interviewed women from all walks of life to find out what makes being a woman in Iceland so great. Reid told NPR's Leila Fadel that not everyone knows Iceland has topped the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Equality Index for the past 12 years, so she set out to change that.
In the past decade, adventurous travelers have flocked to the island nation of Iceland to enjoy its many wonders: stunning nature and wildlife, innovative and unique cuisine, a compelling history that includes Vikings, and the rich literary tradition rooted in the Icelandic Sagas, which is still vibrantly alive today in this well read nation. Once in Iceland, travelers may also note that Iceland has one of the happiest populations with one of the highest rates of acceptance for LGBTQIA individuals, and with no military, Iceland is also one of the more peaceful nations on the planet. Iceland is also a great place to be a woman in 2022. Just how and why that is, and whether Iceland's proximity to gender parity can serve as a model for other nations, is explored in a marvelous new book by Iceland's current first lady, Canadian born Eliza Reid. “Secrets of the Sprakkar Iceland's Extraordinary Women and How They Are Changing the World” explores Iceland's unique history, people, politics, and of course nature, and how these have enabled women to pursue the equality that they know to be their right. In the pages of Secrets of the Sprakkar: What the Outstanding Women of Iceland Know about Equality (Sourcebooks, 2022), Reid introduces us to several extraordinary “sprakkar” or powerful women. This is an ancient Icelandic word that perfectly describes the pioneering politicians, medieval heroines, stand-up comedians, fishermen, search and rescue team leaders, and immigrants to Iceland, like Reid herself who populate the book. As Reid delves into the stories of these extraordinary women, she tells her own story of immigrating to Iceland for love, having a family, and forging her own professional path as the founder of the Popular Iceland Writers Retreat. Life threw Reid and her husband Guðni Jóhannesson a curve ball in 2016: Jóhannesson, a professor of history, was invited to be a pundit on Icelandic TV in the run up to the presidential election following the explosive Panama Papers. And then, as Reid recounts, the phone began to ring. Jóhannesson was elected president and Reid assumed the very public role of First Lady. In “Secrets of the Sprakkar,” she muses about the oddity of the role, but her decision to embrace it with dignity and enthusiasm. She speaks eloquently about how it is important for Iceland's growing community of immigrants to hear her speak in public forums with an accent, just as they do, and know that what she — and they — have to say is important. “Secrets of the Sprakkar” is a slim volume that packs a big punch: part history, part political science, rooted in social observation of a society that has actively pursued gender parity and may well be closing in on it. But above all, this is a love letter to Iceland, from its still-besotted First Lady. Eliza Reid is a Canadian-Icelandic writer, co-founder of Iceland Writers Retreat, and has been Iceland's First Lady since 2016. Reid was educated at the University of Toronto and Oxford University.

Back in December of 2018, Bára Halldórsdóttir outed herself as the whistleblower of the Klaustur Bar Scandal. During this podcast episode, I sit down with Bára to talk about how the scandal unfolded and how it has affected her life. This scandal involved politicians saying horrible things while drinking together in Klaustur bar. Bára happened to be in that same bar and recorded a lot of what these Icelandic politicians were saying. Bára is a whistleblower, artist, and disability activist. Along with the Klaustur scandal, we talk about a range of fascinating topics. During the interview, Bára shares why it was important for her to record this conversation and share it with the country. Because she has a chronic illness, the stress brought on by the scandal has deeply impacted her health. The whole conversation was fascinating and eye-opening for me. I think scandals like this one provide insight into the country that is not often seen or heard unless you live here and engage with people about the topic. Also, I’m glad that Bára was interested in sharing her experience as a whistle blower and disabled person in Iceland because those identities are seemingly at odds. Questions I asked Bára about the Klaustur Scandal & Her Life Take us back to that day in November 2018. What was going through your mind when you heard these MPs in Klaustur bar making such awful comments? Were you afraid that they would notice you recording? What was the reaction around the country when the recording was shared? Had you considered not revealing that it was you that recorded it and staying anonymous? When it was revealed that it was you that had recorded them, you were thrust into the public eye. It must have been quite hard adjusting to that seeing pictures of yourself all over the news, people weighing in their own opinions about recording the MPs and whatnot. How did you deal with all of that? At one point, four of the MPs were threatening to sue you for violating their right to privacy. That must have been really stressful and tough considering that you have a chronic disease. Can you share a bit about the chronic disease you have and the effects this incident has had on your life? You’re an activist and artist. How are you blending your activism and art together to bring awareness about people who don’t have the same physical abilities as many others? What has the reception in Iceland been like to you bringing awareness to lack of understanding that people with different physical abilities are not always being considered at different facilities? Or that they are ignored all together? What is your favorite Icelandic word or phrase? Connect with Bára on Social Media FacebookInstagram Attend the Book launch for "The Viking Immigrants: Icelandic North Americans" In Friday, December 4th, I'm hosting a free virtual book launch for “The Viking Immigrants: Icelandic North Americans” by LK Bertram. The book examines the multi-sensory side of Icelanders that migrated to North America between 1870 and 1914. I’ve been reading the book and even though it is historical text, LK writes it in a way that is entertaining. The book examines the past through rare photographs, interviews, artefacts, and early recipes. By revealing the hidden histories behind everyday traditions, The Viking Immigrants maps the transformation of Icelandic North American culture over a century and a half. Win A Copy of the Book and Vínarterta The guest of honor at the book launch is the First Lady of Iceland, Eliza Reid. You will be able to hear her speak with LK Bertram and will be able to submit questions for them. The other added bonus is that attendees to the book launch on December 4th at 12:00 PM EST will be entered to win a copy of the book and a vínarterta. There will be several copies given away, so there is a good chance of winning one. Here is the link to register.

CORRECTION: Throughout this podcast, we joke about having recorded the final episode of the season live at Spoonbill & Sugartown last weekend. This is a lie! The live event will take place THIS SATURDAY (September 30, 2017) as part of the Taste of Iceland events. Eliza Reid, Iceland's First Lady, will start things off at 2pm, and Lytton and I will follow her. So please ignore all our childish banter and please come out on Saturday for this live recording! This week, Tom Flynn of Volumes Bookcafe returns to the Two Month Review to talk about three of the more difficult bits of Tómas Jónsson, Bestseller one section that's a dream, one about mediums and resurrection, and one that's a poem for going to bed and for death. Thanks to Tom's perceptive insights and Lytton's genius, they're able to puzzle out all three sections and provide some solid guidance for everyone reading along. Feel free to comment on this episode--or on the book in general--either on this post, or at the official GoodReads Group. Tómas Jónsson, Bestseller is available at better bookstores everywhere, and you can also order it directly from Open Letter, where you can get 20% off by entering 2MONTH in the discount field at checkout. Follow Open Letter, Chad Post, and Lytton Smith for more thoughts and information about upcoming guests. And follow Patrick Smith for a variety of literary insights and other commentary. And be sure to follow Volumes Bookstore and Tom Flynn and visit the store when you're in Chicago. And you can find all Two Month Review posts by clicking here. The music for this season of Two Month Review is "Long Year" by The Anchoress. And please rate us on Apple Podcasts (or wherever you get your podcasts) and/or leave a review!

This week Patrick Smith (Best Translated Book Award judge, The Scofield) joins Chad and Lytton to talk about this incredibly powerful section of the book, which raises all sorts of topical ideas about adhering to national myths and the problems of masculinity. This is also the section where Hitler shows up, and where a character literally eats himself out of house and home. And this podcast is a crucial one in helping frame the way this novel simultaneously holds up and undermines a variety of dangerous, unpleasant ideas. After listening to this, we hope you will have an even broader and more nuanced understanding--and appreciation--of this great novel. Reminder!
