Joyce Brenny and Joe Lynch discuss charity champions: specialized trucking and a mission. Joyce is the CEO & Founder of Brenny Transportation, a Minnesota based trucking company that specializes in the transportation of large, heavy, and bulky items that necessitate specialized handling, equipment, and permits. Summary: Charity Champions: Specialized Trucking and a Mission In this podcast, we explore the world of specialized trucking with Joyce Brenny, CEO and founder of Brenny Transportation, and discuss her role as president of the St. Christopher's Trucker Relief and Development Fund. Brenny shares insights into her Minnesota-based company, which hauls unique freight like granite for the Smithsonian and steel bases for windmills, and how they support their drivers through transparent lease purchase programs and customized trucks. We also delve into the mission of the St. Christopher Truckers Relief Fund, which provides medical and psychological support to truck drivers in need and promotes initiatives to improve driver health and wellness. Throughout the podcast, Brenny emphasizes the importance of creating a safe and empowering environment for truck drivers and showcases her commitment to improving the trucking industry. #TMSAElevate #BrennyTransportation #StChristopherTruckersFund About Joyce Brenny Joyce Brenny's trucking career began in 1981 behind the wheel of a semi-truck. She later transitioned to customer service, sales, and leadership roles, eventually founding Brenny Transportation, a Women's Business Enterprise (WBE) in her hometown of St. Joseph, MN, in 1996. A tireless advocate for the industry, Joyce has held numerous leadership positions including the Minnesota Trucking Association Board (first woman trucker Chair), the American Trucking Associations' Safety Policy Committee, and the American Transportation Research Advisory Committee. Currently President of The St. Christopher's Trucker Relief & Development Fund, Joyce has also been recognized by Women In Trucking as a Top Place for Women to Work and Most Influential Woman in Trucking. Most recently, she was nominated for positions on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Policy Committee, Women of Trucking Advisory Board, and the American Trucking Association Executive Board of Directors. Complementing her extensive industry experience, Joyce holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Organizational Behavior and Behavior Psychology from the College of St. Scholastica. Driven by a personal mission to create a safe and welcoming work environment for women in trucking, Joyce champions the rights and respect for all professional truck drivers, believing her purpose is to improve the industry for those dedicated to this essential service. About Brenny Transporation Brenny Transportation was founded in 1996 because Joyce and Todd Brenny wanted to be part of a company that treated people with respect, a company which honored champion character, with a team driven to serve. Brenny's inception into the trucking world began in a very humble way: in a small rented office in Waite Park, MN with three employees and the power of a big idea. Joyce and Todd wanted to show the trucking world that providing Grand Champion Customer Service in an honest and ethical manner could lead to success, and it has. Brenny's growth has been adaptable to the needs of their customers. Brenny has grown because of their superior respect for their customers' needs, as well as honoring the hard work and dedication of their champion team members. Customers and team members never question if Brenny cares. They know that Brenny cares. There are many years of transportation knowledge and experience leading Brenny; experience you can count on. Joyce's career in transportation began in 1980 and Todd's began in 1988. Brenny's Vice President, Bonnie Supan began her career in transportation in 1994. You could say Joyce, Todd and Bonnie are transportation experts. Todd and Joyce both started their careers in transportation behind the wheel of a truck. Between Joyce, Todd and Bonnie they have performed most duties involved in the transportation industry. This expanded knowledge of transportation has helped Brenny secure a stable place in the trucking industry. In today's episode of Trucker for Millennials, we had the pleasure of speaking with Roo, a seasoned truck driver with a wealth of experience in the industry. Roo shared her journey from starting in agriculture to now hauling hazardous materials in the tanker division. She discussed the challenges and personal growth she's encountered, emphasizing the importance of mental health and community support within the trucking profession. Roo's story began in 2016, where she cut her teeth in the agricultural sector, dealing with everything from manure to vegetables. She highlighted the opportunities for new drivers in agriculture, especially during harvest season. After a brief hiatus due to COVID-19 and homeschooling her children, Roo transitioned into the chemical side of trucking, which she finds more secure due to stringent regulations. Throughout the conversation, Roo touched on the loneliness that can come with trucking and how social media and the trucking community have become invaluable resources for support. She also spoke candidly about the work-life balance struggles and the sacrifices made while on the road. Roo also provided insights into the misconceptions about trucking, such as the unrealistic earnings expectations for new drivers and the challenges of owner-operator ventures. She also addressed the supposed driver shortage, suggesting that the issue might be more about retaining quality drivers than a lack of them. We delved into the importance of staying positive and healthy on the road, with Roo sharing her personal battle with quitting soda and the trend of cooking in the truck to maintain a healthier lifestyle. She stressed the importance of being prepared for any situation, carrying essentials like water, food, and mechanical supplies. The episode took a serious turn as we discussed the recent incident of a truck hanging off a bridge, a bridge Roo has driven across before. This led to a broader conversation about the dangers of trucking and the need for public awareness and mutual respect on the roads. Roo's advice to aspiring truckers, especially women considering the profession, was to give it a try and see where the journey takes them. She encouraged taking the leap, as it can lead to unexpected personal growth and fulfillment. In conclusion, Roo's story is a testament to the resilience and adaptability required in the trucking industry. Her experiences serve as a reminder of the importance of community, mental health, and self-care for truck drivers everywhere. Our guest on this week's episode is Pawan Joshi, executive vice president, product management & strategy at E2open. With the rebound in air travel, there are more flights available now to shippers, including cargo-only flights and belly space on passenger planes. How can shippers take advantage of that extra capacity and the lower rates now available? We've seen a lot of advances in robots that move inventory around the warehouse in recent years. But one problem that has remained really hard to solve has been getting boxes into and out of truck trailers or shipping containers. But now we are seeing new technologies to address truck loading and unloading, with some significant investments and pilot programs making progress on this difficult, labor-heavy aspect of distribution.More women are joining the trucking industry as technicians. A new survey shows a year-over-year increase in the number of female equipment technicians. This news comes as the trucking industry celebrates National Technician Appreciation Week.CSCMP's Supply Chain Quarterly  also offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane.  It is co-produced with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.  The current series features Transportation Tech. Our guest on this week's episode is Darcy MacClaren, global chief revenue officer for digital supply chain at SAP. We keep hearing of AI everywhere these days and how it might revolutionize our supply chains. On top of that, consumers this week experienced the annual Amazon Prime Day. How are both of these affecting the supply chain industry?  It has been a rocky year in transportation, as the market resets from the pandemic-infused highs of the past couple of years. Recently CSCMP released its annual State of Logistics report detailing how supply chains have been operating over the past year. In addition, next month CSCMP's Supply Chain Quarterly will release its special State of Logistics issue that takes a deep dive into the various sectors of supply chain. We preview the issue and the organizations participating in this annual review.According to Women in Trucking, the number of women drivers has been growing in recent years, in line with overall industry demand to recruit more drivers to the field. And that's not all that's growing; they also said the number of women in related roles is increasing.
