Trump's Mideast Diplomacy

President Trump's recent visit to the Gulf region marked a dramatic shift from the previous administration's Middle East diplomacy. In his visit to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, Trump focused on securing significant investment commitments and commercial partnerships to support the region's AI and other ambitions.  The trip showcased Trump's transactional approach to foreign policy—one focused on bilateral deals rather than regional frameworks, and economic partnerships over military interventions. It also raised important questions about oil markets, geopolitical competition with China, nuclear agreements, and the future of energy prices. So what are the likely impacts of massive investment pledges from Gulf nations? Do low oil prices limit the ability to make good on them? What is the outlook for oil prices with uncertainty over OPEC+ policy, a possible Iran deal, and possible new sanctions on Russia? And what does Trump's transactional diplomacy mean for traditional alliances and regional stability?  This week, Jason Bordoff speaks with Helima Croft, Joe McMonigle, and Karen Young about how the Trump administration is reshaping U.S. relations with Middle East countries and the long- and short-term implications it will have on energy markets and geopolitics. Helima is managing director and global head of commodity strategy at RBC Capital Markets, where she leads the coverage of energy markets and geopolitical risk. Joe is a distinguished visiting fellow here at the Center on Global Energy Policy and the founder and president of the Global Center for Energy Analysis, an independent research and analysis firm. Karen is a senior research scholar here at the Center on Global Energy Policy and a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute where she focuses on the political economy of the Gulf States and energy policy. On this episode, global systems researcher Iñigo Capellán Pérez joins Nate to discuss net energy analysis, and its use as a tool in analyzing the feasibility of an entire system. While net energy analysis is complex and polarized, some form of it will be necessary to guide society into a resource-constrained future. The energy outlook of a technology changes when scaled up to meet the needs of a larger society.  Many models and EROI analyses that fail to take a system-wide view and only look at a single technology use case, only reflect the partial net energy story. When looking at the huge scale-up needed for ‘solutions' such as Green Growth and Net Zero Transitions, do the hopes for renewable technologies hold up the lifestyles we've come to expect over the last century of fossil surplus? Do our policymakers and leaders have the full picture to make competent decisions? How can we best use these tools to make creative responses to guide us through a Great Simplification? About Iñigo Capellán Pérez: Iñigo is an Industrial Engineer currently doing research with The Group of Energy, Economy and Systems Dynamics (GEEDS) of the University of Valladolid. He holds a Master degree in Electric Energy and Sustainable Development and a PhD in Economics with his dissertation on "Development and Application of Environmental Integrated Assessment Modelling towards Sustainability" at the University of the Basque Country. His research interests focus on the analysis and modeling of the energy-economy-environment systems, the transition to renewable energies in the context of the depletion of fossil fuels and climate mitigation and the technical and social transformations towards sustainability. In our latest Power Trends Podcast, we interview two leading Energy Information Administration (EIA) analysts about the impact of wholesale natural gas prices on winter electricity costs in New York.We spoke to Dr. Tyler Hodge, Senior Economist in the Office of Energy Analysis, and Corrina Ricker, a Certified Data Scientist on the Natural Gas Markets team, to dive into the findings of EIA's latest Short Term Energy Outlook (STEO). Hodge said that he expects electricity prices in New York in 2023 to be about 10% higher than in 2022, which is in line with the U.S. overall. “The fuel cost is the biggest driver to wholesale prices,” he said.In a conversation with the NYISO published earlier this year, Hodge and Ricker explained the relationship between fuel costs and energy prices, and how recent geopolitical factors, like the war in Ukraine, and pandemic-related slowdowns, helped to create low energy supplies. Supplies are rebounding, they said, but demand is also up nationally. In this recent interview, Ricker also said that increased global demand for natural gas, followed by U.S. exports of liquid natural gas to Europe are driving electric prices higher. Colder-than-average temperatures predicted for the next few months could also have an upward impact on prices through the heating season, she said. While the amount of electricity coming from renewables continues to rise nationally and in New York, natural gas remains the largest source of generation, they added. About the U.S. Energy Information AdministrationThe EIA collects, analyzes, and disseminates independent and impartial energy information to promote sound policy making, efficient markets, and public understanding of energy and its interaction with the economy and the environment. Today's guest is a veritable expert on solar and climate change, and has recently served as a lead author for the IPCC's 6th assessment report. He made his name a few years ago in the energy sector writing a book which explains how we got to the level of low-cost solar we presently enjoy - what was the combination of entrepreneurial effort, technology, and policy that got us here?  Further, he explores how that is relevant for future solar & whether the lessons learned can extrapolate to other technologies.  Gregory Nemet is an author and a professor at the University of Wisconsin, where he teaches courses in energy systems analysis, policy analysis, and international environmental policy. His research focuses on understanding the process of technological change and how public policy can affect it.  Dr. Nemet received a master's and Ph.D in energy and resources from the University of California, Berkeley, and a BA in geography with economics from Dartmouth College. From 2013-18 he chaired UW–Madison's https://eap.wisc.edu/ (Energy Analysis and Policy) certificate program, and in 2015, he received the H.I. Romnes Faculty Fellowship for outstanding research contributions.  He was named an https://www.carnegie.org/awards/andrew-carnegie-fellows/2017/ (Andrew Carnegie Fellow) in 2017, which particularly calls to me as I'm a big fan of Andrew Carnegie. The Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program supports high-caliber scholarship in the social sciences and humanities that ideally results in the publication of a book or major study.  Gregory turned his research into his first book, https://www.routledge.com/How-Solar-Energy-Became-Cheap-A-Model-for-Low-Carbon-Innovation-1st-Edition/Nemet/p/book/9780367136598 (How Solar Became Cheap): A Model for Low-Carbon Innovation. Published in June 2019, it makes the case that other low-carbon technologies with similar properties can benefit by https://www.howsolargotcheap.com/ (understanding the drivers) behind solar energy's success.  In today's Tactical Tuesday, we'll explore takeaways from his 20 years of research to understand how solar prices dropped dramatically and spurred an energy revolution. We'll also dive into his work as a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) https://www.ipcc.ch/working-group/wg3/ (6th Assessment Report) (AR6). Talking Home Renovations with the House Maven

In Massachusetts there is an effort to get a million homes to be all electric by 2030. What is that going to mean, and why does it matter? I found Ben Butterworth in a Boston Globe article about electrification of Massachusetts houses from August 2021. He had had some resistance when trying to remove his existing system and I wanted to talk to him about how he achieved his goals. About our guest: Ben Butterworth has been working in the clean energy and climate policy space for the past decade and currently serves as the Senior Manager of Climate and Energy Analysis at Acadia Center, based in their Boston office. Acadia Center is a nonprofit advocacy organization whose mission is to advance bold, effective, and equitable clean energy solutions for a livable climate and a stronger, more equitable economy. Ben's work includes managing and conducting research and analysis in support of Acadia Center's initiatives and state implementation efforts, on topics including energy efficiency in buildings, electrification of buildings, and the phaseout of the northeast's reliance on natural gas. Prior to Acadia Center, Ben was a Senior Associate at the Cadmus Group and a Senior Consultant at DNV. In these two energy-focused consulting roles, Ben worked with a diverse set of clients – including city, county, and state governments, community choice aggregations, and corporations – to develop implementable solutions to complex climate and energy issues. Ben's interdisciplinary work experience in the climate and energy space has led him to develop technical areas of focus in areas including energy efficiency, renewable energy, thermal decarbonization, and electric vehicles. He also has extensive experience in greenhouse gas quantification, scenario analysis, and policy cost-benefit analysis. Ben holds a Master's of Environmental Management with a focus on Energy and Climate Policy from the Yale School of the Environment and a BS in Environmental Science from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. ********************************************************************************************* I'm pretty excited that we've officially reached the 100 episode milestone. We might see some producers in the US realize an uptick in price relative to the benchmark crude. The U.S. will likely continue to export heavier crude because their units can produce more distillate because that will go into the bunker pool. Believes prices will be impacted even though everyone has known about this for a long time. Main impact will be on distillate grades. Impact on diesel market could be significant - 15%!It really comes down to the flow of crude oil and how its going to change around the world.
