We are super excited to bring you an episode from the 18th annual Whiskey Off-Road. The Whiskey Off-Road is an iconic MTB event by Epic Rides in Prescott (pronounced PRES-KITT), AZ. It is a three day affair with kids races, 15, 30 and 50 Proof (those are the race distances in miles) amateur races, the pro-only downtown fat-tire crit and the Pro Backcountry race. Not to mention a live concert! This is one of the best MTB race weekends of the year.  Thanks to Maxxis Tires for not only supporting this podcast, but also being one of the sponsors of this event! In this episode, we catch up with Bradyn Lange and hear his stories from the days at the Whiskey. He smashed it in the fat-tire crit, finishing second behind Keegan, and he has some stories to tell from a tough day in the backcountry. We also chat off-road racing, this van/tent life, the LTGP and his resurgence on the XCO scene.Next, Haley and I do a little back and forth on our experiences of the weekend. We both landed on the podium, Haley in the fat-tire crit and myself in the backcountry. We dive into our equipment setups and of course the different Maxxis Tires we ran over the weekend. Finally, we are lucky to have Evelyn Dong join us to share some wisdom from her past 9 years of competing in this race. Evelyn has finished on the podium here several times before and is always a contender. The big climbs and copious amounts of singletrack suit her riding style. We also get a chance to chat about tires, her decision not to put her name in for the LTGP in 2023, the SingleTrack Series and all the sweet off-road events coming up in her schedule.  Get ready, let's go to that finish line. We hope you enjoy the show!Hosted by: @andrewlespy and @haleyhuntersmithJoined by:  @bradyn.lange and @evelynd11Produced by: Bill Schieken @cxhairs

Welcome to podcast episode 19 and thanks for joining us! We're here today with Nick, Sam and Mathew Szymanowski (AKA Shim) from Shim's ride, the missing member being Cole Glover. A collection of Avid Cyclists, Nick, Sam, Cole and Shim lived together in Victoria from 2014-2019 and rode and raced together. Shim's ride is group dedicated to raising money for spinal cord research through Praxis Spinal Cord Institute. Prior to his injury, Shim was an amazing athlete and decorated in the sports of both rowing and cycling including multiple national titles and representing Canada in the U23 Rowing World Championships. Shim continues to show his strength, dedication and resilience in the way he approaches life post-injury and it's inspiring to see.Since starting Shim's ride, the team have raised a staggering $105k for spinal cord rehab with their two huge rides and multiple other fundraising efforts. In 2020 Nick, Sam and Cole rode from Port Hardy to Victoria in one shot, a distance of 520km - an incredible effort. In 2021 the plan was to ride from Kelowna to Victoria, however forest fires and smoke meant a change of plans to start in Hope instead. The ride still totalled a massive 510km and the team raised an awesome $21,000. For 2022 the Shim's ride team are doing things a little differently and instead will be racing the Windsor Park Criterium in Victoria on July 24th. There will be a promo ride on June 18th and a fundraiser BBQ on July 23rd - you can see the event schedule here and their fundraising page here if you wish to donate to their amazing cause. We wish Nick, Sam and Cole the best with their race and fundraising efforts and for Shim's continued rehabilitation and thank you all for taking the time to appear on the podcast. We hope you enjoy listening!

On this Episode of Luke Who's Talking I'm going to talk about, Elections, Flex Moves and Epic Rides. I know we're all sick of elections and politicians, but on Saturday Australians ‘went to the polls' and categorically shafted Scomo and the Libs. At the point of me writing this (Tuesday 24th) we know that Albo will be our new PM, but what the government will look like is a little unclear. Labour will be the biggest party, but at this point they are a couple of seats short of a majority (76 needed) but they are looking solid to get there. So, yeah, we've got a less right wing govy, for a more centre left one. Recently, I was at the doctor and I noticed that they had their doctorate/diplomas etc handing on the surgery's walls. This got me thinking, is that just a ‘flex move' by professionals who display their diplomas and such on their walls. Is this something you do in your profession? Let me know. As you may know, and as I've been talking about, I'm doing a 65 Roses Challenge this year to help raise a few bucks for Cystic Fibrosis. One of my goals as apart of my challenge was to see if I could do my longest ever ride, which I did last weekend. I took on an ‘epic' ride which ended up being about 154km, yeah that long, mostly it was an ‘easy' ride, but it did get a bit tough in a couple of spots, but I managed to keep going and I got home before it got dark! We are a state that prides ourselves on the abundant opportunities in our great outdoors. In the Natural State, we have over 100,000 miles of navigable streams and rivers, 600,000 acres of lakes, 5 world class Epic Rides mountain bike trails, thousands of miles of hiking trails, over 3.2 million acres of public land, America's first National River, the Buffalo National River…America's first Reserve National Park, which is Hot Springs National Park…the highest waterfall between the Rockies and the Appalations, big game hunting…and on and on.” Katherine Andrews, (5:43)“One of the hardest challenges for recruiting companies [is] actually getting someone from the company to come here. But once we actually got them here, then they [say] ‘ok now I understand. It makes sense to me.' There's an incredible opportunity as a state right now to capitalize on attracting new companies and workers to the state by leveraging our natural assets.” Katherine Andrews, (11:09)“Today, one of the biggest driving forces for companies when they're making location decisions is workforce. Some of the others are business friendliness, cost of doing business, cost of living, proximity to suppliers and consumers. Fortunately for us, we have all of those things. We are one of the most business-friendly states in the US, we are located smack-dab in the middle of the country…and we have a very diverse industry in Arkansas.” Katherine Andrews, (11:43) “There's something special happening here. Bentonville is a community that cares deeply about its people and about creating a sense of place. It draws companies in. So if you look at the investments being made by the philanthropic groups, large corporate organizations, and others, that only just becomes more clear. Northwest Arkansas is one of the fastest growing metros the US, so…that choice to me would be a no-brainer to move here.” Katherine Andrews, (20:37)“My overall goal is for this office to become the one-stop-shop for all things outdoor recreation, a gathering place for knowledge, information, and resources.” Katherine Andrews, (24:10)

From the humble beginnings of a 24 hour party in the Arizona desert, to a nationwide series, he’s always maintained a down-to-earth attitude. That’s why I like having him on Mountain Bike Radio. In this episode, we chat about the current world of race directing, what Epic Rides is up to, and more. ABOUT EPIC RIDES: “Epic Rides is a passionate group of individuals who care about sharing the outdoors from the saddle of a bike. We want as many people to ride bikes in this world as possible. Whether it’s to go to the store, to drop the kids at school, or to pursue fresh air and adventure trailside, we know a bike ride (no matter how long) does wonders for the soul. Our events are a platform for personal achievement, camaraderie, challenge and life driving motivation (and satisfaction). We hear from him on why an honest look at that era is important to him and whether other ex-dopers should be involved in the sport. Then, we talk to Dr. Rachel McKinnon who just became the first transgender rider to win a world championship. She won the masters 35-44 sprint event on the track over the weekend. McKinnon explains some of the issues and misconceptions about transgender athletes. Off the top, we discuss the action at Il Lombardia and much more.
