A (relatively) in-depth analysis of The Police in just under 20 minutes.Their 1978 debut album, Outlandos d'Amour, reached No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart on the strength of the singles "Roxanne" and "Can't Stand Losing You". Their second album, Reggatta de Blanc (1979), became the first of four consecutive No. 1 albums in the UK; its first two singles, "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon", became their first UK number ones. Their next two albums, Zenyatta Mondatta (1980) and Ghost in the Machine (1981), led to further critical and commercial success with two songs, "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", becoming UK number-one singles and Top 5 hits in other countries; the former album was their breakthrough into the US reaching number five on the US Billboard chart.Their final studio album, Synchronicity (1983), was No. 1 in the UK, Canada, Australia, Italy and the US, selling over 8 million copies in the US. Its lead single, "Every Breath You Take", became their fifth UK number one, and only US number one. I hope you enjoy the podcast and do leave feedback if you like what you have heard.Mathew Woodall
In December 1982, the Police flew to the Caribbean island of Montserrat to record their fifth album. The executives at A&M Records were excited. A year earlier, the trio had generated hit singles like “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” and “Spirits in the Material World.” Suddenly, they were filling arenas. But the atmosphere in the recording studio quickly turned sour. Guitarist Andy Summers sniffed at lead singer Sting's demo of “Every Breath You Take” as cheesy pop. Drummer Stewart Copeland bristled when the singer tried to give him orders. And Sting, who had been contemplating going solo, was tired of pretending this was still a democracy: Why were they arguing about whose songs were best? Wasn't it obvious? This oral history, including interviews with Sting and the other members of the band, takes listeners inside the making of “Synchronicity,” one of the most popular records of the 20th century – and what eventually tore the band apart.
Born in 1952, in Virginia, Stewart Copeland - the son of a CIA agent - spent his formative years in the Middle East but attended college in California before settling in England in 1975. He joined the progressive rock outfit Curved Air, working first as their road manager then as their drummer. In early 77, he founded the Police with singer/bassist Sting and guitarist Henri Padovani (soon replaced by Andy Summers). Their first hit, 79's "Roxanne," set the course for huge success to follow. The trio emerged as one of the most popular and innovative bands of the post-punk era, drawing upon reggae, funk, and world music to create a uniquely infectious yet cerebral brand of pop which generated a series of smash singles including "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," "Every Breath You Take," and "King of Pain." While with the Police, Steward also issued a solo record under the alias Klark Kent. This not only earned him wide critical acclaim for his intricate, textured drum work, but also for his songwriting as he contributed many of the group's songs. When the Police officially disbanded in 1986, the band was still at their commercial peak. Disagreements betwenn members had caused the trio's collapse and Stewart took to composing film scores, earning himself a Golden Globe nomination. He increasingly spent more time on film scores. In 2002, Stewart formed a new rock-oriented project, Oysterhead - a power trio supergroup. A year later he produced and directed Everyone Stares, a documentary film about his time in the Police. In 2007, Stewart reunited with his former bandmates to celebrate their 30th anniversary. Stewart also wrote his memoir, Strange Things Happen: A Life with The Police, Polo, and Pygmies at this time. In 2021, Stewart collaborated on the instrumental 'Divine Tides'. The album won the 2022 Grammy Award for Best New Age Album, giving Copeland his first Grammy win outside of the five he earned as a member of the Police. He also released 'Police Deranged for Orchestra' where he reworked Police hits for an orchestra. In 2023, he published Stewart Copeland's Police Diaries, a book based on his original diary entries from 1976-1979. This week Stewart Copeland joins us to regale us with his many stories. Episode 49 - The Wedding Singer (1998) - Full Review Movie PodcastIs the 80s the greatest decade of all time? We might be about to find out. Join the Born to Watch crew as we revisit the iconic romantic comedy "The Wedding Singer" and discover why it's still one of the most beloved movies of all time."The Wedding Singer" is a delightful romantic comedy that is both a love letter to the 1980s and a timeless story of two people finding each other. With its charming cast, catchy soundtrack, and witty humour, it's no wonder this film has become a pop culture icon. The movie stars Adam Sandler as Robbie Hart, a talented wedding singer who is jilted at the altar and falls into a deep depression. Drew Barrymore plays Julia Sullivan, a sweet-natured waitress who is engaged to a wealthy and self-absorbed businessman. When Robbie and Julia meet, sparks fly, but their timing seems to be perpetually off. The movie takes us on a journey as they navigate their feelings for each other while dealing with the complications of their personal lives.Sandler and Barrymore have excellent chemistry, and their comedic timing is impeccable. Their characters are endearing and relatable, and it's impossible not to root for them to get together. Sandler brings his signature wit and humour to the role of Robbie, and his musical performances are a highlight of the film. Barrymore, meanwhile, is charming and likable as Julia, and she and Sandler play off each other perfectly. The supporting cast is also excellent, with standout performances from Christine Taylor as Julia's snooty cousin Holly, Allen Covert as Robbie's best friend Sammy, and Jon Lovitz as the sleazy wedding singer who competes with Robbie for gigs. The film is filled with memorable and hilarious moments, from the group sing-alongs to the impromptu performance of "Love Stinks" after Robbie is stood up at the altar. One of the most significant aspects of "The Wedding Singer" is its celebration of 1980s culture. The film is set in 1985 and is packed with references to the music, fashion, and pop culture of the era. The soundtrack features iconic songs from the time, including "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" by Dead or Alive and "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" by The Police. The costumes are appropriately outrageous, with Robbie sporting a mullet and Julia wearing shoulder pads and neon leggings. However, the film doesn't just rely on nostalgia for its appeal. It also has a timeless quality that makes it resonate with audiences today. At its core, "The Wedding Singer" is a story about love and finding your soulmate. It's a film that celebrates the power of music to bring people together, and the importance of following your heart, even when it's not the easiest thing to do.Beyond its entertainment value, "The Wedding Singer" has had a significant impact on pop culture. The film helped solidify Adam Sandler's place as a comedy superstar and launched Drew Barrymore's career comeback. It also paved the way for a wave of romantic comedies that followed in its footsteps, including "Notting Hill" and "Love Actually."The film's popularity has also spawned a successful stage musical adaptation, which premiered on Broadway in 2006. The musical features a score by Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin and has been performed in theatres around the world. In addition to its cultural impact, "The Wedding Singer" is also a significant film for Adam Sandler fans. It's widely regarded as one of his best movies, and many fans consider it a classic of the romantic comedy genre. It's a film that showcases Sandler's unique blend of humour and heart, and it's a testament to his talents as both a comedian and an actor. In conclusion, "The Wedding Singer" is a must-watch movie for anyone who loves romantic comedies, 1980s nostalgia, or just a good laugh. It's a film that has stood the test of time and continues to be beloved by audiences today. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew
Matt talks about popular classic rock love songs to play on your wedding day - as a first dance, during the ceremony, as a slow dance song, or to accent a moment like cutting the wedding cake. Important Links View the complete list of classic rock love songs. See all Wedding Songs Podcast episodes Podcast Transcript All right let's talk about Classic Rock love songs. These are Classic Rock songs from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Before that time I would consider being oldies and newer then that would be more modern, and as time progresses you could say that the 2000s could be considered classic but only time will give that presence. On our website, MyWeddingSongs.com I do have a list of 60 top Classic Rock songs that you can check out by searching for Classic Rock songs on the website. While you are there make sure you sign up for our monthly newsletter of all the new wedding songs released in the previous month, plus what is trending. That way you get an idea of what songs are popular that maybe you have forgotten about for a little while. Now, of course, I am not going to be covering all 60 songs because that would really bore you to death, but let's go ahead and get started with the first song by U2 and “All I Want Is You”. U2 is one of the greatest bands of all time from Ireland. This song has the lyrics…But all the promises we make, From the cradle to the grave, When all I want is you. Kind of a lovey-dovey song that you can have. Another legendary Classic Rock band is Led Zepplin with their song “All My Love”. I think that a lot of people forget about this song. Lyrics include…His is the force that lies within, Ours is the fire, all the warmth we can find, He is a feather in the wind, All of my love. There are quite a few Bon Jovi songs that I could have selected, but I preferred the song “Always” released in 1994 on their album Cross Road, with the lyrics…‘Til the heavens burst and the words don't rhyme, And I know when I die, you'll be on my mind, And I'll love you, always. From the Hair Band era we have Styx with “Babe” in 1979, and also “Can't Fight This Feeling” by REO Speedwagon in 1984 was a very popular love song. Lyrics included…I've forgotten what I started fighting for, It's time to bring this ship into the shore, And throw away the oars, forever. A very popular love song that was covered by Brian McKnight, and many other artists, is “Crazy Love” by Van Morrison in 1970, with the lyrics…Take away my trouble, take away my grief, Take away my heartache, in the night like a thief, She gives me love, love, love, love, crazy love. You know, everybody thinks of “Every Breath You Take” by The Police, but that is really like a stalking song so not a very good wedding song. Instead, you may consider “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” with the lyrics…I resolved to call her up, A thousand times a day, And ask her if she'll marry me. This song is a mid-tempo song so it is one you can have during the dancing part, even during the cocktail hour or just to keep the mood up. “Every Rose Has It's Thorn” by Poison in 1988 with the lyrics…Just like every night has its dawn, Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song, Every rose has its thorn. The next two songs are very popular first dance songs. One of my best friends had it at his wedding. It is “Everything I Do I Do It For You” by Brian Adams, and “Faithfully” by Journey with those famous lyrics…And lovin' a music man, Ain't always what it's supposed to be, Oh girl you stand by me, I'm forever yours, faithfully. Another very popular love song, released in 1989, is “Have I Told You Lately” by Van Morrison. It was covered by Rod Stewart and include the lyrics…Have I told you lately that I love you, Have I told you there's no one else above you, You fill my heart with gladness. Motley Crue's song “Home Sweet Home” released in 1985 is a great love ballad. Lyrics include…Long and winding road, I'm on my way, I'm on my way, Home sweet home.
By 1981, The Police had 3 hit records and the respect of their peers and the music industry. But meddling from the record company caused Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers to retreat to Canada and the isle of Montserrat to record their 4th album Ghost in the Machine.Producer Hugh Padgham had them work in separate rooms to get their sounds but it also may have been to keep them from each others throats as the band were known for fighting over their studio parts. Sting had developed into the lead songwriter and wrote the big singles Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Invisible Sun and Spirits in the Material World as he had all their previous hits. But he sought to incorporate synthesizers, piano, horns and some of the reggae influences from their punk/ska peers and their island surroundings. Of course Stewart and Andy had to push back on some of his ideas but you can't deny the results as it was their biggest selling album to that point and was the predecessor to their biggest record of all time, Synchronicity.Special thanks to Paul Stephenson of Vintage Rock Pod for the inspiration as his recent interview with Stewart Copeland gave us the idea to review this wonderful album.Ugly American Werewolf in London WebsiteYouTubeTwitterInstagramLInkTreewww.pantheonpodcasts.comWant to win front row seats to Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets in the US?Enter here to win tickets and a chance to be on a Pantheon Podcast: https://pantheonpodcasts.com/nickmasonGet tickets here: https://www.thesaucerfulofsecrets.com/

Il y a 40 ans, le 2 octobre 1981, Sting publiait avec The Police l'album "Ghost in the Machine". Sting publiait "Symphonicities", album enregistré avec un orchestre philharmonique le titre "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic". Decíamos ayer que The Police estaba en la cresta de la ola por méritos propios y por canciones como esta: Spirits in the Material World Traspasados los años 80 The Police fue abandonando su condición new wave para centrarse en su vertiente más pop. Así sucede en Ghost in the Machine (1981), un disco producido por Hugh Padgham que incluye los sencillos «Spirits in the Material World», que acabamos de escuchar, y «Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic» que escucharemos ahora. Un ejemplo: If you love somebody set them free. Sin abandonar es trabajo, vamos a escuchar otro corte: We work the black sean.
Así sucede en Ghost in the Machine (1981), un disco producido por Hugh Padgham que incluye los sencillos «Spirits in the Material World», que acabamos de escuchar, y «Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic» que escucharemos ahora.
