Chad Gray from Mudvayne is on Talkin' Rock as they tour on their Psychotherapy Sessions tour. He talked about touring with Zombie last year as kind of a "feeling out" to see what could happen with the band. He talked about all the places in the world he'd like to hit on this tour. He told me about playing some different songs on this tour, that they hadn't played before. As far as their cover of the Police song "King Of Pain", don't expect them to be doing that one any time soon. "It just did not sound good....it sounds wonky" He explained that whole thing about the tuning of the song. It was really interesting talking about a conversation he had with the late Vinnie Paul, about how big Pantera was even though they hadn't played in a very long time. Chad said there's all sorts of fans seeing Mudvayne for the first time. From very young kids to "old guys like us." There's a lot of music talk with Chad, although he says he doesn't listen to much new music, he said he has his staples. "I just don't go searching for new music." He mentioned how music takes him back many year like a "Sonic Fountain Of Youth". Great line! What made Pantera so good? He talked about how they wrote songs. "Those MFers played to the song." He spoke to writing with V.P. during his time in Hell Yeah. He talked to meeting one of his heroes, James Hetfield of Metallica. He went on and on about what a treasure James is, and a little secret he gave him to help his performance as far as singing goes. All and all, a great conversation with Chad. Loved talking to him, as always. -Meltdown-

Look, Joshua Pate may not have initially embraced the title of 'King of Pain,' but his dedication to pain research and his pursuit of a PhD in the field have earned him a seat on the pain throne for our discussion As an athlete, particularly one involved in combat sports, I've always been intrigued by the intricate relationship between pain and injury. In the past, many physical therapists used to view pain as a signal to rest or immobilise for recovery, but scientific advancements are reshaping our understanding. With the distinction between acute and chronic pain and the growing knowledge of neuroscience and how our brain perceives pain, our perspectives have undergone significant shifts. Josh now focuses his work on children experiencing chronic pain, and I find the approach to resolving this to be equally captivating. I'm convinced you'll love this conversation. (It'll be quite a pain if you reach the end and don't, wont it?) The band's most successful release, the album includes the hit singles "Every Breath You Take", "King of Pain", "Wrapped Around Your Finger", and "Synchronicity II". The album's title and much of the material for the songs were inspired by Arthur Koestler's The Roots of Coincidence. At the 1984 Grammy Awards the album was nominated for a total of five awards, including Album of the Year, and won three. At the time of its release and following its tour, the Police's popularity was at such a high that they were arguably, according to BBC and The Guardian, the "biggest band in the world". Mark, Kevin, Alex, and Chris take you on a historical journey surrounding the album as well as share our favorites and not-so favorites from the record. Christians call Jesus King. Yet, we also say he died a very undignified and shameful death. What kind of king is Jesus, who lets himself be captured, humiliated and tortured to death on a cross? This sermon argues that the way Jesus died isn't a sign of his weakness. Instead, it's a sign that he is a king who is willing to suffer any kind of shame and pain in order to complete his mission of grace.Scripture Passage: Luke 23:33-46Preached on Christ the King Sunday, November 24, 2019 by Rev. Hey Broomheads, after an off week, Rach and Pat are back to cover episode 403 for a second time! Beware, we didn't rewatch the episode before recording so some of the details are pretty fuzzy and the episode goes off the rails pretty quickly, but that's kinda the point! Have fun!

Steve Jones is one of the legends of the running world. Breaking the world record in his debut marathon (2:08:05) without changing his Mars bar, meat pie, and Coca Cola diet(!). He went on to win the Toronto, New York, and London Marathons...Including taking a bathroom break at the 23 mile mark of the London marathon, and still winning. He shares that story in full for the first time today, and we discuss how he didn't let stomach issues derail his plan to be the best. Steve was given the nickname the King of Pain for his ability to push harder in running than anyone else, and his coach said he had an insatiable appetite for hard work. Steve never missed an opportunity, taking every chance to race he could, and he explains why he thinks all of us should race more, especially if it means we can explore a new city or place. We compare training and racing like baking a cake, and Steve explains why just one missing ingredient or step could lead to disaster in a race, but at the end of the day, we have to look internally to see how we were not ready. Steve is honest, real, and doesn't hold anything back, this episode is for you if you love to hear about running without complications, at a time when running was just getting out there and being the best you can be. Steve will be real with us, sharing the ups, and especially the downs that took him from running around mountains for run with his friends, to being the best in the world. Today's Guest Steve Jones Former World Record holder in the marathon, finished 8th in the Olympics, and known for being able to handle a punishing pace from the start of any race, better than anyone else. What You Will Learn About Steve's upbringing and how a lack of structure in his running and racing allowed him to just have fun and enjoy every opportunity Why he was given the nickname "the fox" How to cope with the stressors and situations that come up in races Why runners get in trouble in races and feel like they are mentally giving up (and what is actually going on) Why his training is 100% effort based, and why every runner should consider switching to this type of training How he has changed his philosophy now he is coaching other runners, and how he realized "not everyone is Steve Jones" Inspirational Quotes Exercise was a way of release I suppose. Today it is all mental with games and technology, but our release was going out and running in the mountains. It wasn't technology, it wasn't science, it was just running every day. When you are running well, especially in that sort of situation, where its head to head with yourself and the next best guy, trying to win, those things really don't bother you very much. I spotted a headline just yesterday about how to manage your threshold run, I run threshold all the time, so I learned that very quickly. Now it is a specific workout, but I did it every day. I trained hard, and when I raced, wherever it was; UK, the US, Europe, when the gun went, I always went off hard...I always gave it 100%. Everything was progressive. We didn't just jump in at the deep end straight away. Going from 60 miles a week to 65 to 70 miles a week, those incremental increases and small increases year in year out, helped me develop that strength. It wasn't about trying to win the races, it wasn't about being a superstar, I just wanted to beat that SOB in front of me. It was one step at a time. I never had dreams, I never dreamt I was going to break a world record, I never dreamt I would run 27:39 for 10k, I just kept trying and trying, and I was never disappointed. You have to take the rough with the smooth and most times in sport, there is a lot more rough than there is smooth. Racing and running gets to be more than a hobby. Although in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, it was just a hobby, you don't learn anything by just going out and training every day. Because my training was effort based, I didn't need to know how fast I was going, how far I was going, I just needed to know when to start and when to stop. You are racing other people, not your watch. You are racing the distance, not your watch. You are racing the 5k, 10k, 1/2 marathon, 10 miler and the 13,000 other people racing side by side with you. You are racing those people. People are more OCD about going for a run than they are about trying to improve their running. I am the quintessential club runner that became good. I came from nothing. No talent, no running equipment, a pair of Woolworths plimsolls, to being the best in the world. Former Miami Dolphins tight end Dan Johnson tells us he has taken more painkillers than any other player in the history of the game, he took so many he earned the nickname “King of Pain”. He played in the 1984 Superbowl, catching a touchdown pass from the great Dan Marino, but the effects of a career on painkillers left him bed ridden for many years. Things got so bad that he considered suicide, Dan tells us that despite the problems he suffered he still finds it hard to say that it wasn’t worth it. We’re also joined by Jiri Dvorak, FIFA’s former Chief Medical officer and File on 4’s Beth McLeod who has been investigating the effects of painkillers in sport The Legend of Nello Ferrara The Stanley Cup is ongoing at the moment, but Nello Ferrara doesn’t need to win ice hockey’s biggest prize to become famous. Ferrara lied his way to a 10 year professional career, he posed as his own agent “Nelli Lechance” to convince teams to sign him and snuck into the training sessions of an NHL team in the hope of being signed. The Rainbow Player Anton Hysen became the first active footballer to come out as gay when he announced his sexuality to the world in 2011. When he did so he encouraged more gay players to follow his example, but he remains the only man to come out and continue playing. Hysen tells us that the new novel ‘The Rainbow Player’ could help gay footballers feel comfortable enough to come out in future. We also hear from David Kerby-Kendall who is the author of the book. His novel is about a young, talented player whose career goes off the rails because he fears the reception he’d get if and when his sexuality is revealed. Petra Kvitova Return Petra Kvitova made her comeback at the French Open less than six months after she was attacked and stabbed during a home invasion. Anthony Crolla knows exactly how Kvitova feels, he confronted intruders at his neighbour’s house in 2014, they escaped after smashing a concrete slab over his head. Crolla came back to become the light heavyweight champion of the world, he tells his story and offers his advice to Kvitova as she continues her recovery. Cofveve – a sporting term? After President Donald Trump left the planet scratching their heads over the meaning of his tweet which included the word “cofveve” this week, BBC World Service broadcasters Lee James, Hugh Ferris and Mani Djazmi give their suggestions as to what it could mean in a sporting context.
