Then I got the entrepreneurial bug, so we moved across the country from Chicago to North Carolina. We opened two practices and then came across a course about selling on Amazon. We started to sell on Amazon as a sunglasses company. Then we started to realize how big of a problem dry eye is. It affects 40 million Americans—over 10%. The existing products were very expensive, so somebody came to us and asked us if we could develop one. That’s how our first product for dry eyes was born—from listening to our customer. We always joke that I try to ten-X the business and she tries to prevent us from going bankrupt. Travis’s best advice for entrepreneurs One of my favorite pieces of advice is that to become an overnight success, you need to be persistent for years and years. The reason we are successful and somebody else isn’t is that we wake up every single day knowing exactly what we need to do that day in order to move our business forward. We found what we like to do and we just do that every single day. When you are persistent long enough, everything pays off. Your business will grow; you’ll hit a tipping point. Each of us knows exactly what their one thing is. I know that my one thing is podcast interviews and content creation. I try to get on at least one podcast a week. Getting in front of other people’s audiences is my one thing. Hopefully, one of your listeners will resonate with what we are saying and they will follow us, either from the business side or from the healthcare side. We focus on two main things to attract customers. First, we have our YouTube channel, The Dry Eye Show, with 41,000 subscribers. The second is podcast interviews. Biggest failure with customers That was in 2019. We were two years into the dry eye journey and our main focus was our dry eye community on Facebook. This week I have another inspiring interview for you with a wellpreneur who works in the part of our industry we don't often see online. Dr. Travis Zigler is an optometrist, and he and his wife both being doctors have been running a regular on-site business and seeing clients in person. But they wanted more freedom and flexibility in their lives and they also had a really strong drive to give back to the community when it comes to eye health – because not everyone can afford to go and see an optometrist. So they decided to start an online business called Eye Love, and set up Eye Love Cares Foundation to start helping prevent blindness in the world. You'll see how they came up with a unique way to tell people what they do, a title that that sparks a conversation and allows them to throw an amazing pitch. Travis shares how while figuring out how to work online, they first started out with sunglasses business but quickly evolved to developing and selling their own eye wellness products for dry eye and macular degeneration, so they could help more people improve their eyesight. Since then they have grown their online business exponentially, and extra profits of that business allowed them start their own charity and start providing glasses to people that cannot afford them, offer scholarships to optometry students, and finance small expeditions for treating preventable blindness. We also talk about the importance of cleaning up your email list, Facebook lives, and about their awesome content creation and SEO strategy that really helps with their Google ranking, with spending minimum $ on payed advertising. On this episode of the Healthy Wealthy and Smart Podcast, Dr. Travis Zigler joins me to discuss eye health. Dr. Travis Zigler is on a mission to end preventable blindness. In 2010 he graduated from The Ohio State University College of Optometry with Magna Cum Laude honors. He went on to own two optometry practices in South Carolina specializing in "difficult to fit" contact lens patients and dry eye, but soon found his passion for entrepreneurship. Dr. Zigler notes, “An eye exam is the only time that we can actually see live blood vessels and we can actually see a live nerve in the back of your eye. And that can tell us a tremendous amount about your health.”   From Dr. Zigler’s experience, most conditions are a result of many lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise and hydration. He believes, “If we learn how to solve this chronic inflammation problem that plagues the western society, all of us in the US, then it is going to make a huge difference.”   Dr. Zigler believes in a holistic plan of care for all of his patients with most preventable eye problems being a symptom of a systemic problem.
