Welcome to Monsters on the Edge, a show exploring creatures at the edge of our reality in forests, cities, skies, and waters. We examine these creatures and talk to the researchers studying them.Joining us on this week's show:George lunsford is a Cryptozoologist, along with being a Field Researcher and Investigator of Cryptids, the Paranormal and UFOs; he has done many jobs from being a maintenance man to making explosives for the government. He was also an actor for many years doing indie feature films, commercials, book trailers, Public service videos, and even a music video for the Steep Canyon Rangers called Long Shot.George's life was changed when he was a young man. His great-grandmother passed away and her spirit visited him one night, sitting on the foot of his bed. She looked at him and said I love you, said goodbye and disappeared. He wanted to believe it was just a dream but could smell her scent in his room. George attended a haunted high School. In his early twenties he had a near death experience from pneumonia. He saw his own body in the bed and a lady that had died in that hospital room stood there talking to him. He saw the Angel of death as he opened a portal of bright light. The spirit that was talking to him, told him "it's not your time". He laid back down and woke up to alarms going off and nurses busting into hospital room.George also had encounters in the Bermuda Triangle, a UFO in the middle of the ocean, and many other events. George has always been interested in paranormal, cryptid creatures and Bigfoot and has done a lot of research thought his lifetime.George wrote "Legends, Myth, Monsters, and Ghost" because he wanted to share the stories he's heard and researched from all over the US with the world. He wants people to know that there is so much out in the world, then in that little bubble we all live in. When we were young, the older people would pass these stories down and we would go out and try to see if they where real. He hopes that sharing these stories, will give everyone an adventure to go on. George being an old sailor has had many adventures both at sea and on land. Please enjoy his books and go on your own adventures. Be safe!!!! In this episode, I share some of my work related to lung health in partnership with Carrier Sekani Family Services and First Nations communities in north central British Columbia. I talk a bit about why I am doing this work, then described some of the activities we did on our recent trip a couple of weeks ago. I mention some of the principles I bring as the researcher to this work, in terms of responsibility, opportunity, flexibility and accountability, and why I'm drawn to the unpredictable nature of research down outside of the hospital or university setting. Podcast Producer Alphecca Perpetua shares her sentiments on the reality of the nonexistent Filipino identity dating back to the three principal peoples of pre-historic and ancient Philippines: the Negritos, the Malays, and the Indones, who already greatly differ in phenotypes; from skin color to survival behaviour. On the other hand, Resident Historian Amiel "Cortz" Cortes paralleled the ideology of "The China Man" being well-grounded to their Chinese identity and ancestry, same as Jewish communities, while modern-day Filipinos would easily adapt to different cultures and practices. And also the supposed issue behind Andrés Bonifacio's scheme to use José Rizal's name during KKK meetings that led to the latter's eventual demise. In other words, "Why, Andrés? Why!" Podcast Producer Alphecca Perpetua asked Resident Historian Amiel "Cortz" Cortes if the 1986 EDSA Revolution and the 2022 Philippine Elections results were both contrasting historical events, and found that the two weren't as different and weren't as ironic from 16th to 19th-century Las Islas Filipinas after all; with cities, municipalities, and towns still ruled and governed by the same Principalía (or ruling Mestizo Class) now simply known as the "Politician-Elect". He added, "I was using these families as examples that not much has changed in the Philippine society since the Spanish period. How our society is run is simply dictated by the choices of a very few wealthy elite families. The Principalía of the 1800s pretty much dictated how their local communities were governed. Fast forward to today, we are still slaves to the choices of a few wealthy families who may or may not come from the Principalía of old. This idea came from Alfred McCoy in his book, 'An Anarchy of Families: State and Family in the Philippines.' A must-read especially in these [trying] times." Resident Historian Amiel "Cortz" Cortes compared the similarities of the 1986 EDSA Revolution and the 1896 Philippine Revolution with the deaths of Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. José Rizal as major catalysts paired with ongoing abuse and violence experienced all throughout the nation; pinpointing the idea of liberty already embedded within the general populace's minds. All the while recounting the military alertness and activity after receiving news of the bereaved Aquino family's hideout within Cebu City grounds. Resident Historian Amiel "Cortz" Cortes claimed that the not-so-secret society KKK was the original "Pyramid Scheme" in the Philippines due to the nature of its fractal recruitment style of triangle system and grades. And while heavily stationed in the Luzon-Manila area, the KKK started recruiting members in the Visayas region; primarily around the Iloilo and Negros area due to the Mestizo's wealthy network and connections brought by large profits of estates and plantations, which eventually led to the recruitment of Hiligaynon revolutionary leader Lt.-Gen Pantaleón "León Kilat" Villegas to spread word of an upcoming rebellion on the highly urbanized Cebuano shores that would soon be known as the bloody battle of Tres de Abril. Resident Historian Amiel "Cortz" Cortes debunks another popular belief that the KKK, a Philippine revolutionary secret society, was a peasant revolution. Instead, he emphasizes that it was mostly led by fellow Mestizos and other wealthy individuals; that most—if not all—"true peasants and indios" were minding their own businesses: fishing, farming, and gossiping. Although, the general populace already had the idea of a lingering independence fight as news about the Mexican War of Independence had earlier reached the Philippine shores. In this Episode 33 excerpt, Resident Historian Amiel "Cortz" Cortes sums up how Filipino Mestizo writer José Rizal was the ultimate 1898 Philippine Revolution catalyst; along with fellow Mestizo boys Andrés Bonifacio, Antonio Luna, Emilio Aguinaldo, Apolinario Mabini, and more. He also discussed how the Principalía—the noble, elite, or pseudo-royalty & wealthy mestizo class—played a huge role in both the rise and fall of 19th-Century Hispanic Philippines. Aside from bringing fortune and culture, what else did the Galleon Trade bring to the Philippines? For two and a half centuries, Spanish trading ships sailed between Acapulco and Manila that brought cargoes of luxury items such as tobacco, spices, and porcelain to the Americas. During the Spanish empire, priests and missionaries were mobile. And also aboard the galleons were deportees, prisoners, exiles, and among other undesirables from the colonies; making a diverse variety of crewmen traveling between Spain, Peru, and the Philippines. With all the 16th-century Spanish ruckus between Cebu and Manila, whatever happened to Mindanao? Resident Historian Amiel "Cortz" Cortes recounts on the Spanish-Moro conflict originating from medieval 11th-century Europe, where Muslim-Christianity hostility was first recorded. Apart from infighting issues between a few Muslim tribes, the sea border (Bohol Sea) separating Visayas and Mindanao also contributed to the slow progress — with an additional note that the Ifugao tribes within the Cordillera region (Northern Luzon) were also free from Spanish reign; mentioning their threats of Spanish heads displayed on spikes and poles within routes as warnings. Cebu City may have been the first city in the Philippines, but it took a long time for the former capital to look and function as one. Resident Historian Amiel "Cortz" Cortes answers 69 questions to help visualize archaic Cebu City boundaries, subtle racial segregations between the Chinese and Indios, geographical challenges of the Cebu Islands shorelines, and the transfer of Spanish headquarters to Manila Bay that contributed to 200 years of unchecked progress on the island; apart from the strong presence and resistance of various Visayan & Mindanaoan kingdoms and tribes with their chieftains. "Friars, Matriarchs, Tres de Abril, and the Virgin Mary" BLAST FROM THE PAST (feat. Amiel "Cortz" Cortes) An Excerpt: Season 1, Episode 02, Rated-PG13 "Lay Back" | Music by Brian Withycombe SPONSORED BY: Studio Historias, Broadcasting & Multimedia Productions https://show.studiohistorias.com AMIEL "Cortz" CORTES is a Cebu-based Historical Researcher & Consultant. THE VIRGIN MARY SYMBOLISM. In 1986, it was believed that the Lady of Fátima—the Catholic title of Mary that's based on the Marian apparitions of three shepherd children at Fátima, Portugal in 1917—"miraculously mediated" a peaceful revolution against former Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos Sr, where demonstrators largely consisted of Roman Catholic nuns who offered flowers to soldiers while praying the rosary. Two years later, a "Holy Ground" marker known as the EDSA Shrine was built as an act of thanksgiving to the Virgin Mary. In 2019, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts of the Philippines declared the church as an "Important Cultural Property". PHILIPPINES, A MATRIARCHAL NATION. Stemming from pre-colonial social structures, the Philippines already allowed equal importance among kinships, where women inherited property, commanded as religious leaders, composed the military forces, and led villages in the absence of a male heir. Today, Filipino women still contribute to the decision-making process within families, businesses, and the country. The Philippines currently ranks 7th in the Gender-Equality List for Southeast and East Asia in the 2022 SDG Gender Index by Equal Measures 2030, with an overall score of 69.8 just after Malaysia and Thailand. THE MANILA GALLEON. THE BATTLE OF TRES DE ABRIL. In March 1898, Filipino revolutionary leader Lt.-Gen. Pantaleón "León Kilat" Villegas agreed to revolt against the Spaniards with the Cebuano Katipuneros (KKK); plotted on April 10th, an Easter Sunday. After the Spaniards caught wind of the scheduled rebellion, armed with bolos (machete) and some guns, 6,000 revolutionists fought a week earlier on Palm Sunday, April 3rd, and won; now known as the 'Battle of Tres de Abril'. "Marcos, Martial Law, EDSA, and the Tasaday Tribe" BLAST FROM THE PAST (feat. Amiel "Cortz" Cortes) An Excerpt: Season 1, Episode 02, Rated-PG13 "Lay Back" | Music by Brian Withycombe SPONSORED BY: Studio Historias, Broadcasting & Multimedia Productions www.show.studiohistorias.com As Told By PekPek, Mug Collections by @alpheccaperpetua www.instagram.com/AsToldByPekPek AMIEL "Cortz" CORTES is a Cebu-based Historical Researcher & Consultant. He graduated with a degree in AB History at the University of San Carlos, Philippines in 2015, and worked as a Program Officer for Research at the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation where he contributed as a Principal Researcher, Indexer, Editorial Assistant, and Field Researcher for various local and regional events, exhibits, academic publications, and projects. The PEOPLE POWER REVOLUTION (also known as the "EDSA Revolution") was a series of nonviolent political demonstrations in February 1986 as a civil resistance campaign against violence and electoral fraud under the 21-year Marcos regime. EDSA is a limited-access, circumferential highway in the Philippines. It is an acronym for "Epifanio de los Santos Avenue," and is considered as the longest and most congested highway in Metro Manila; stretching at about 23.8 km in length. FERDINAND EMMANUEL EDRALIN MARCOS SR was the 10th and 11th president of the Philippines, as well as the 3rd Prime Minister, from 1965 to 1986. He ruled under Martial Law from 1972 until 1981, but retained powers as the country's dictator until the People Power/EDSA Revolution in 1986. The TASADAY TRIBE is a controversial indigenous group living in the Lake Sebu area in Mindanao, Philippines, and are considered to belong to the Lumad group, the Austronesian indigenous peoples in the southern part of the country. The controversy started in 1971 when Manuel Elizalde Jr of the Presidential Assistant on National Minorities (PANAMIN)—a former Philippine government agency created to protect the interests of indigenous peoples—initially reported to the Smithsonian Institution to inform the world of an isolated group of primitive hunter-gatherers living in caves. The report garnered so much global attention that it attracted various specialists, professionals, and scientists to conduct preliminary investigative and academic work. In 1972, the Marcos administration then established a 19,000-hectare rainforest reservation that surrounded the caves of the Tasaday tribe. Two years later, visitors were then required to obtain special permits; therefore, prohibiting further interaction. In the aftermath of the EDSA Revolution in 1986, Swiss anthropologist and journalist Oswald Iten, among others, debunked the existence of the "Stone Age" cave dwellers when Tasaday tribesmen confessed that they were, in fact, a mixed group of Manobos and Tbolis lumads who acted as cave-dwelling, stone-tool using primitives in exchange for land and money as promised by PANAMIN. This episode was originally released May 6th, 2019.For episode 39, Geoff Moes (@ThallidTosser on Twitter), Nat Moes (@GrandpaBelcher), and Josh Chapple (@joshchapple) talk about the role of planeswalkers in Vintage, speculate baselessly about some new cards in War of the Spark, and discuss sous vide and other novel methods of cooking. Here’s the timestamped table of contents for your listening ease and enjoyment:00:42 – A Brief, Half-Educated History of Planeswalkers in Vintage26:56 – What Do We Do With 36 New Planeswalkers?43:16 – Sous Vide? So What?Total runtime: 55:29 Planeswalkers in Vintage I want to start the writeup with a lament, actually, for the loss of Morphling.de. That website was a longtime store of Vintage decks and knowledge from the paper and early online days of the format, going back to 2002. I did a lot of research there for articles and podcasts and considered it a great source for questions like “Who was the first person to top eight with Rage Extractor?” and “Is there a recent 5C Stax list?” The archives are still available, but they’re not searchable. It’s a blow to people like us who enjoy the historical perspective. At least the archives of The Mana Drain are still in good working order. Using those, it seems like the first planeswalkers, from Lorwyn, mostly missed Vintage entirely. Little Jace Beleren wasn’t explosive enough and too generously gave cards to your opponent. Chandra Nalaar and Liliana Vess were too expensive, and Ajani Goldmane was too creature-centric for the time. In fact it was Garruk Wildspeaker who had the most attractive power-level to cost ratio, making into an experimental Worldgorger Dragon combo build by Rich Shay and a novel mono-green deck from Guli. These weird, attackable enchantments with activated abilities didn’t really go anywhere It wasn’t until Tezzeret, the Seeker combined with a newly re-re-un-re-errata’d Time Vault in 2008 that planeswalkers really took hold. Suddenly there was an entirely new deck archetype—two if you distinguish Turbo Tezz from the regular kind—that featured an entirely new card type. And it was winning! Tezzeret still won in a very Vintage-y way, that is, immediately. You had one to stop your opponent from taking all the turns, which meant short-term answers like counterspells and artifact removal were reasonable. Still, Thirst for Knowledge was restricted in 2009. Then, in 2010, Jace, the Mind Sculptor appeared in Worldwake. There was a lot of discussion when the text first appeared, with players trying to determine the new card’s role, if it had one. You should really treat yourself to skimming that thread, as it’s hilarious in hindsight. Big Jace didn’t catch on right away, but it definitely left a mark on the format. Jace paired nicely with Dark Confidant as a draw engine in control decks, so well that Owen Turtenwald won the 2010 Vintage Championship with it as a three-of. Jace succeeded in making the game longer, and Gush and Frantic Search were unrestricted in October 2010 to compete in that environment. It’s at this point that Vintage really turned more towards creatures as part of a strategic plan. Stuff on the board started being more important than stuff in the hand, and planeswalkers, creatures, and removal jockeyed for superiority. (This is actually where Jace Beleren (the card) started to show up, as a counter to players trying to push the envelope on Jace, the Mind Sculptor. Beleren was slightly cheaper and could strand an opponent’s Mind Sculptor in hand. It was kind of a weird time.) There haven’t been so many planeswalkers that reached Tezzeret or Jace status. Dack Fayden certainly made an impact, particularly as an anti-strategy against Workshop decks, encouraging the use of Arcbound Ravager alongside Lodestone Golem and necessitating Phyrexian Revoker. And the bar has gotten lower for other planeswalkers to be tested. Even unexpected hits like Arlinn Kord, Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast, and Tamiyo, Field Researcher have made Vintage Top 8s. So It’s WAR Now we enter a new era of planeswalkers. Previously, they had been weird, attackable enchantments with activated abilities. Now they have static and triggered abilities too! This puts even more emphasis on preserving a board full of stuff as you increase your value as the game goes on. Not only do planeswalker abilities draw you virtual spells each turn, but you’re further rewarded for keeping a board full of stuff. Creatures and removal—particularly if it covers a variety of permanent types—thus get more important as well. We look at some cards from War of the Spark completely without context aside from being a Vintage-focused podcast. Certainly there are a few standout planeswalkers that could slot easily into an existing Vintage deck or something similar, and War of the Spark seems like it will have a major impact on the format. Consider Saheeli, Sublime Artificer, or Ral, Storm Conduit, as a fifth copy of Young Pyromancer with benefits like comboing a little with Time Vault or copying Ancestral Recall or any of Vintage’s other great spells. Teferi, Time Raveler, could make it into Jeskai as a control piece, or into Paradoxical Outcome as anti-counterspell technology. Maybe Teyo, the Shieldmage, or Dovin, Anarch of Bolas (don’t forget hybrid mana can be mono-colored!) find a place in a mono-white prison deck alongside various Thalias and other white weenies. Karn, the Great Creator, seems like a shoo-in for a Mishra’s Workshop deck. Despite being a four-drop nonartifact, Karn’s one-sided Null Rod ability is powerful, particularly in the mirror and against Paradoxical Outcome, where it can’t be removed by artifact hate. Being able to get artifacts out of your sideboard or that were exiled is also strong, potentially game-winning and well worth four mana in an artifact combo deck like Two-Card Monte. Karn’s suite of abilities could also find a home in Paradoxical Outcome decks, similar to Teferi; Karn can shut down opposing Shops or the Mirror and provide an alternate route to victory. Even getting old effects on new card types could be exciting. Jace, Wielder of Mysteries, is a new Laboratory Maniac, potentially with a built-in path to an empty library. Narset, Parter of Veils, is similar to something like Notion Thief in conjunction with Dack Fayden or any number of draw-sevens. And Ashiok, Dream Render, potentially shuts down tutor-heavy combo decks like a one-sided Mindlock Orb or permanent Shadow of Doubt. These may not see long-term heavy play without help, but they have some interesting applications. Beyond planeswalkers there are plenty of other interesting cards in the set. Some combo-minded players are salivating over Bolas’s Citadel, which seems to combine Yawgmoth’s Bargain and Channel into one Tinker-ready package, and (particularly as I write that sentence out) seems nuts. An aggressive, black-based storm or Goblin Charbelcher deck make use of that if players aren’t too scared of Mental Misstep to run Dark Ritual. And if planeswalkers do run roughshod over Vintage, The Elderspell has some seriously exciting text for two mana. I realize this section reads like a bit of a laundry list of card names, but that’s because War of the Spark has great potential. The addition to Vintage of this many planeswalkers (and associated cards) that are reasonably costed with reasonable abilities is unprecedented. Food and Drink: Unconventional Ovens We close this episode with a discussion of sous vide and other cooking techniques for the lazy hipster. Geoff likes the convenience of long-term, constant-temperature hot water baths for his bachelor chow of salmon. He can put his filet-o-fish into a bucket in the afternoon, set the temperature on the sous vide wand, and return later when he wants to eat. There’s no chance of overcooking, and a quick sear in a pan or on the grill adds caramelized flavor. It’s trendy and fun! And as you’ll learn in the podcast, you can sous vide pretty much anything, including phones. Josh is intrigued by cooking salmon in the dishwasher or on top of a car engine during a long road trip. Nat adds that he used to cook Pop-Tarts in a hot pot in his dorm in college. We all do what must be done to survive. Questions for Discussion Which is Jace, the Mind Sculptor’s best ability? What different planeswalkers have you played in Vintage? Did you ever go crazy and, like, BOOM! seven-mana Garruk, Apex Planeswalker instead of playing, like, Yawgmoth’s Bargain? What War of the Spark cards spark your interest? Did you ever cook fish in your dishwasher? How about just throwing a steak in the dryer to tenderize it? What’s the most expensive card you’ve ever sous vide’ed? Conclusion Thanks for listening! We should have something special coming up in the next few weeks so stay tuned! We’ll look forward to any questions or comments here or The Mana Drain or on Twitter. You can also email us at seriousvintagepodcast@gmail.com.

Shane Corson, Woody and I sit down and interview Dr. John A. Bindernagel. Dr. Bindernagel is a wildlife biologist who has sought evidence for Bigfoot since 1963. He published a book in 1998 entitled "North America's Great Ape: the Sasquatch." Dr. Bindernagel grew up in Ontario, attended the University of Guelph and received a PhD in Biology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He moved to British Columbia in 1975 largely because the region was a hot spot for Bigfoot sightings. Over the years, he has collected casts of tracks that he believes belongs to Bigfoot. He also claims to have heard the creature near Comox Lake in 1992, comparing its whooping sound to that of a chimpanzee. Bindernagel believes that the Bigfoot phenomena should receive more attention from serious scientists, but has remarked, "The evidence doesn't get scrutinized objectively. We can't bring the evidence to our colleagues because it's perceived as tabloid." We also interview Peter Byrne who has led the life most of us can only dream about. Share his many adventures in India with tiger, elephant, and leopard, and see how a fortuitous championing of a member of the ruling elite of Nepal during a bar brawl prompted Peter to move to Nepal and become a professional hunter there. Move with him to Nepal where he was, for years, the only authorized professional hunter to operate in that country. In the unspoiled wilderness of the White Grass Plains area of Nepal, where there were virtually no roads and the natives did not even know the name of the capital of the country. The final interview was with Rhettman A. Mullis, Jr., PhD-ABD, CAF, MHP (USA), Academic and Field Researcher, Founder and Lead Researcher for "Sasquatch Investigations and Research: Bigfoot and Bigfootology," and Contributing Writer and Editor: Bigfootology.

In October 2010, A2Ethics.org had the distinct honor of hosting Bede Sheppard, the senior researcher in the children's rights division of Human Rights Watch. We know it as the Sheppard conference. Not only did Bede visit Ann Arbor to give a keynote lecture for our Ethics Without Borders Education Project, he taught a class of high school students about his work, talked again about it at lunch, and then attended a reception and dinner, where we asked him the same questions.
