Welcome back to Not A Bomb! This is the podcast where we explore some of cinema's biggest box office failures and decide if they deserve a second chance.Listener Request Month continues as Troy and Brad finally delve into the frequently requested film, "One from the Heart," directed by Francis Ford Coppola. This movie is a musical disguised as a drama, depicting the story of a Las Vegas couple going through a breakup and the tumultuous journey their relationship takes during one eventful night apart. It is a fascinating look into a film that almost bankrupted a movie studio and the lengths Coppola took to see this to its conclusion. Listen as the guys talk about hairy-chested men, the sexy appeal of Raul Julia, and relationship advice. One from the Heard is directed by Francis Ford Coppola and stars Frederic Forrest, Teri Garr, Raul Julia, Natassja Kinski, Lainie Kazan, and Harry Dean StantonNot A Bomb has just unveiled new designs in our Merch store! The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are once again looking at one of the most famous flops in Hollywood history, a passion project that lead to writer/director Francis Ford Coppola working for hire throughout the 1980s and declaring bankruptcy. If only the movie was worth the artistic risk. This misguided and messy musical, which isn't really a musical, failes to enchant the guys who come packed with lots of complaints. Available on Apple and Spotify Episode 417 includes: -After a scathing round-up of Katy Perry's comeback single/video "Woman's World," it's time to talk about some bigger news: Joe Biden is out. Kamala Harris is in. Democrats can breathe again. It's a long discussion over the political tremors of this week and what it can mean looking ahead. -Nate tries to make sense of Kevin Costner's "Horizon," one-quarter of an itnended whole we may never see. -Ben has watched the DC animated "Flashpoint" trilogy and lived to tell the tale. -The Flop Era -- "One from the Heart" (1982) -The guys analyze extensively Francis Ford Coppola's failed musical throwback to the romantic musicals of the 1950s and cannot fathom why anyone should care about this story and these lovelorn characters. Pitty Terri Garr. Also, a side conversation about the necessity of sex/nudity in movies and generational takes on this.

Today we welcome podcaster and musician Bob Ethington to discuss two ambitious, high-profile flops from two of the 1970's most ambitious, high-profile auteurs. Steven Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola were following up some of the most beloved American films ever made when they sunk huge budgets into experiments that blew up in their faces— and that might even share some blame for the end of the New Hollowood era. They are Spielberg's 1979 epic historical farce 1941, and Coppola's 1981 lavish musical romance ONE FROM THE HEART. Odds and Ends: Are theaters actually dying? We provide thorough and very well-thought out opinions on it, and provide recent experiences on opposite ends of the spectrum. Nick's being a bad crowd during I Saw the TV Glow, and T.J.'s being a great crowd (meaning just him) for The Fall Guy. Feature Film: Josh returns yet again to talk about his first official normal guest rec, a lesser known Francis Coppola movie, One from the Heart. A sort-of musical that seems influential despite it's relative obscurity, or at least Chazelle and Villeneuve probably watched it maybe. Reuniting with my good friend & the senior editor of Letterboxd, the intelligent & highly articulate Mitchell Beaupre, in this delightful, research-filled feature-length conversation, we take a look at director Francis Ford Coppola's ambitious, messy, underrated, & often misunderstood '80s period, with emphasis on the films RUMBLE FISH, THE COTTON CLUB, ONE FROM THE HEART, & PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED. Francis Ford Coppola's biggest folly or one of his greatest masterpieces? Brian and Mike open up a discussion on 1981's One From the Heart. Even though it was panned at the time; modern reassessments tell a different tale. Francis's favorite nephews talk Frederic Forrest, the underrated legacy of Terri Garr, Raul Julia in his prime, neon soaked Las Vegas and offer a couple of movie recommendations along the way.
This week, we discuss two films from the early 1980s set in two of America's casino cities. The first is Atlantic City (1980), directed by acclaimed French director Louis Malle. The film, which stars Burt Lancaster and Susan Sarandon, was nominated for 5 Academy Awards. The second is One from the Heart (1982), Francis Ford Coppola's disastrous follow-up project after Apocalypse Now (1979). The film, which was shot entirely on sets constructed at Coppola's Zoetrope Studios, lost over 20 million dollars and ultimately bankrupted both Coppola and his studio. The latest episode of YKY's "Never Seen" pick is Sean's choice, Francis Ford Coppola's 1981's One from the Heart. The controversial film that killed his Zoetrope Studios. The film was universally panned when it was released in 1981. Curious when you consider the stellar cast including, Teri Garr, Frederick Forrest, Raul Julia, Harry Dean Stanton, Natassja Kinski and Lainie Kazaan. Is it a musical, a romantic comedy, an avant-garde new wave film or simply a passion project from a director who wanted to re-create the old Hollywood studio system? All of that gets worked into the discussion around this film. Let us know what you think in the comment section.
On this week's Fabulous Film and Friends we are going to show that we're tough enough when discussing Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 cult classic The Outsiders. Starring a veritable Who's Who of 80's leading men and one woman, Matt Dillon, C. Thomas Howell, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise, Emelio Estevez, Rob Lowe, dreamy Leif Garrett and the token female, future Oscar nominee Diane Lane. If the movie had made ten years later, it would've cost upward of $100 million dollars in salaries. Why are we discussing this film? Because The Outsiders The Complete Novel aka the Director's Cut was recently released on HBO Max and I was compelled to revisit this imperfect yet fascinating work by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola, arguably the greatest American Filmmaker of all time, who made this movie in a sort of experimental retreat after suffering a devastating financial and critical defeat with his previous film, 1982's One From The Heart . Joining me in this analytical rumble and representing the hard punching greasers is the terror of Ketchikan Alaska, back alley brawler Alex Robertson. And on the snooty soc side, who stands for truth, civility, curling up to a good book with a hot cup of tea, my sister Roseanne! But first the synopsis: Based on the popular novel by SE Hinton, The Outsiders unfolds as sensitive, intelligent Tulsa Oklahoma greasers Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny Cade go on the lam after Johnny murders Bob Sheldon, a soc who nearly drowns Ponyboy in a jealous rage after Ponyboy is seen talking with with Bobl's girlfriend Cherry Valance. During their time in hiding and aided by their good friend, protector and fellow greaser Dallas “Dally” Winston”, Johnny and Ponyboy rescue a group of children from a fire which sends Johnny to the hospital with severe burns. Returning to Tulsa with Johnny in critical condition, Ponyboy joins with his brothers Darry and Sodapop to face the soc's in an no-holds barred rumble as Bob's murder demands vengeance. The Greasers win the fight but at what cost?
One from the Heart (Francis Ford Coppola, 1981)
Like Francis Ford Coppola's 1982 musical folly ONE FROM THE HEART, Leos Carax's new rock opera ANNETTE is not interested in playing it safe, whether that means, like Coppola's film, enlisting idiosyncratic musicians for songs that challenge movie-musical convention, or enlisting a puppet to play the titular role. We're joined again this week by our friend Joshua Rothkopf to unpack which of ANNETTE's provocations work and which don't, before placing it alongside ONE FROM THE HEART to discuss the two films' use of high artifice, the troubled relationships and troubling men at their centers, and how their respective engagement with sex and nudity reflects the times in which they were made. As a self-consciously artificial musical about a troubled couple (among other things), Leos Carax's new ANNETTE put us in mind of another original movie musical with little use for convention: Francis Ford Coppola's 1982 folly ONE FROM THE HEART, a famous flop that also represents a singular artistic achievement. We're joined this week by critic and old friend Joshua Rothkopf to consider how this tarnished labor of love stands the test of time, whether the film's surplus of style is enough to offset its narrative and character deficiencies, and whether it represents Coppola's “midlife crisis film.” Plus, we respond to some listener questions about music that takes us out of a movie, and “green” movies that draw us in. It's a bonus extra-sized bumper megamix episode this week, as Martin and Sam dive headlong into One From The Heart... then quickly dash out of it again! Taking a quick-fire approach to season 8, we spend a minute (that's right, a whole 60 seconds) on each track, getting our thoughts, concerns and analysis of 14 tracks condensed into one easy-to-swallow download. It's the 50th episode! Dave and Cathy do a special crossover with Martin and Sam from "Song by Song" - a podcast in which they review every Tom Waits track in chronological order. They watch Francis Ford Coppola's 1982 disaster, which bankrupted a studio, derailed his career, but at least bagged Tom Waits an Oscar nomination for the soundtrack. The walk to the train contains bad navigation, a canal, lots of mud and an angry swan. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Sam and Martin join forces with Dave and Cathy of the Cinemile Podcast this week to take on the film that Francis Ford Coppola wouldn't even put his middle name to... One From The Heart. Debating the intention and execution of the film, as well as it's narrative strengths and weaknesses, the performances therein, as well as some of the sexual politics of a failed romance story with a happy ending, the new entity of Song by Cinemile finally puts to rest the age-old question: where can you buy an affordable DVD player on a Saturday lunchtime? Tyler and David are joined by Scott Nye to discuss theatricality vs. realism.
In what may prove to be the longest title of any episode of this podcast, Terry does explore the Negativland song that inspired the title of this episode but there is so much more. First, Terry briefly considers not talking about TV anymore then proceeds to recommend three TV series (The Honorable Woman, Sonic Highways & A to Z. Then, a number of movies are discussed most of which are availble on Netflix Watch Instant. Some are soon to leave like Girls Just Want To Have Fun while some are still coming like Chef. There are some New Year's Eve viewing suggestions including the previously discussed One From The Heart which recently returned to the Netflix streaming service. Finally, the discussion goes to music with post scripts on discussions of She & Him and Guided by Voices. However, the heart of the music discussion is a consideration of the Negativland song from 1989. Since artists like The Flaming Lips are taking pop recordings like Sgt. Pepper and making them stranger should artists like Taylor Swift seek out more adventurous recordings and make them work in the pop realm? This smorgasbord of an episode tries to refer back to elements of the earlier episodes while laying out clues to podcast episodes that should be forthcoming in 2015.
For Independence Day 2014, Terry revisits Francis Ford Coppola's 1982 film "One From The Heart" which features an Oscar-nominated Song Score from Tom Waits. Mr. Coppola chose to follow up Apocalypse Now with the simple love story of Hank and Frannie (Frederic Forrest and Teri Garr). A production that went over budget and a troubling pre-release buzz led Coppola to remove the film from distribution shortly after its February 1982 release. Upon closer inspection, this minor film in the Coppola filmography is worthy of reconsideration due to solid performances especially from Teri Garr, its technical innovations and the music from the film. All this and more is discussed in this episode of Flickering Waves. Episode 6 of the podcast will feature a discussion of Ray Dennis Steckler's 1969 film Body Fever.
