There was not a faster rising star in the mid 90s than Jim Carrey. After an 18 month window that gave us Ave Ventura: Pet Detective, Dumb and Dumber, The Mask and Batman Forever, it was a little surprising to see him take a more dramatic role in Peter Weir's The Truman Show. The story of Truman Burbank slowly discovering that he's the unwitting star of a lifelong reality TV show marked a real turning point in his career. Clint, Cal and Alex talk about the overlooked greatness of key grips, how the film was both ahead of its time AND very of its time and how staggeringly good Laura Linney is. Meanwhile, Dan's algorithm says there's no more truth out there than in the world it created for us... Can you imagine living in a world where millions of people are glued to their screens 24/7, watching the life of an ordinary person unfold while being bombarded with advertisements that are disguised as part of the entertainment? Of course you can! It's 2024, and we're already there. But back in 1998, the premise of THE TRUMAN SHOW was still a pretty radical idea, giving moviegoers a glimpse of the future shortly before the reality TV boom of the 2000s and long before the rise of social media. Audiences who thought they were in for a summer comedy starring Jim Carrey found themselves instead confronted with deep philosophical questions about freedom versus choice, artifice versus authenticity, surveillance versus privacy, and other heady topics - unaware that they were witnessing the rise of the world's first influencer. The film stars Jim Carrey as likable everyman Truman Burbank, who's lived his entire life unaware that every move he makes is broadcast to adoring fans across the globe. His mom, his wife, his best friend, and everybody else in town are in on it. The Truman Show gave Carrey newfound credibility as a dramatic actor and showcases peerless supporting performances from Laura Linney as Truman's increasingly unhinged wife and Ed Harris as the God-like “creator” behind this massive production. There's no question that Peter Weir's fable-like film was ahead of its time in numerous ways, which only lends itself to an even richer conversation than was possible back in the late 90s. But how does this unusual blend of comedy, drama, and satirical science fiction hold up as entertainment now that there are millions of Truman Burbanks among us? Is the movie held back by dated technology and a plot that hinges on 1990s broadcast television, or is it time to hail The Truman Show as a timeless masterpiece? In this week's episode we discuss the gnostic and occult themes found throughout the 90s blockbuster classic; The Truman Show. In the 25 years since the film's theatrical release, The Truman Show has continued to draw new interest and inspired numerous fans to dig through its seemingly never ending list of clever details and hidden content. While much has been said about the film over the years we focus on the occult symbolism and religious motifs which make the Truman Show perhaps the best gnostic themed film ever made. We begin by unraveling the etymology of character names and quickly move into the gnostic, Kabbalistic and Tarot symbolism hiding in plain sight. We discuss Adam Kadmon, The Scarlet Woman and of course The Black Iron Prison. In the extended show we go even deeper into the machinery of Truman's world and find ourselves treading Tarot paths on the Moon, exploring the Canis Major, the lunar-womb-Matrix and how Truman uses the principles of Hermetic Magick to Cross the Abyss, confront God himself and complete The Great Work. Fair warning: we go pretty heavy on the Gnostic, Tarot and Kabbalistic symbolism in this episode. We highly suggest listening to our previous episode if you'd like a crash course on gnosticism, our WTF is Kabbalah episode for that and googling a diagram of the Tree of Life may be helpful in one or two instances. The 1998 movie The Truman Show is a film about a man named Truman Burbank who—unaware—lived his entire life inside a simulated reality TV show. In order to pay for the show, the producers filled Truman's world with cleverly placed ads of all kinds, even within conversations that Truman had with his wife (who was really a paid actress). At one point Truman and his wife are in the middle of an intense conversation, and she suddenly holds up a product and says with fake chipperness: “Why don't you let me fix you some of this new Mococoa drink. All natural cocoa beans from the upper slopes of Mount Nicaragua, no artificial sweeteners!” This would be unsettling to most of us, especially in the context of something sacred like a marriage relationship. We instinctively feel that there are certain things too holy to pollute with ads of any kind. Some things in life require honor and respect, but when those things are turned into advertising opportunities, honor and respect are stripped away. Christian ministries face enormous pressure to monetize their content through advertisements. YouTubers in particular often face the question of whether they should monetize their channel or not. The logic often goes like this: “Ad revenue will help provide regular income to grow the ministry, so we don't have to rely just on donations from supporters.” I want to make the case from biblical principles that running ads on ministry content is wrong. Truth, holy things, the work of the Spirit of God, and all kinds of Christian edification are like marriage or friendship–too sacred to exploit with advertising. Read the article here.

In 1998, Jim Carrey was in the midst of his peak comedic film era and yet he opted to join on The Truman Show, a film far from funny. At that time, we thought of Carrey as Ace Ventura or Lloyd Christmas and not as the sad sack that was Truman Burbank who, unbeknownst to him, was being broadcast to billions of people every second of the day. I talk to Zoo about the implications of this depressing "comedy."  The Truman Show is a reminder of the commercialization that was seen to this day. Everything is for sale, everything is a jammed pack full of advertisements and we may have lost some of our own identities in the process.Notes:‘The Truman Show': Weir and Niccol's Uplifting Yet Prophetically Disturbing Dystopian SatireHow we made The Truman Show – 20th anniversaryMusic by HoliznaCC0, Orphaned Media - Swingin' Richard

"We Accept The Reality Of The World With Which We're Presented. It's As Simple As That." -Ed Harris in “The Truman Show” (1998)   In the 1998 film the Truman Show, Jim Carrey plays the title character Truman Burbank (true man) who lives an idyllic life in a quaint coastal town that is a cliche of Americana in the 1950's. A perfect town free of crime, traffic, or unhappy people. For something we have relatively little of in the first place, control is something many of us dread losing. Maybe that initial scarcity of it is the root of the degree of our fear. After all, you'd be more afraid of spilling a cup of water if it was all the water you had, than if you could easily draw more from a well. One character I focus on this week, Truman Burbank from The Truman Show, spends most of his life unaware of being controlled and manipulated by others. Another, Bodie Broadus from The Wire, is painfully aware of how little control he has, but futilely dreams of gaining more. For episode sources, scripts and more, visit healthyfears.com. For my publication credits, visit JohnnyCompton.com The opening theme for Healthy Fears: “Dark Game Background Loop” by Claudiu D. In part 6, Our Mindlessness Script illustrates how we adapt to cultural conditioning by not thinking. The 1998 film, The Truman Show, starring Jim Carrey as Truman Burbank, is an exaggerated cinematic example of a pre-conscious life plan based on a decision made in early childhood. Using the film, we can understand how the part of us that craves (Psycho) operates based on the directives of the script. The parallel with the virtual world is, like Truman Burbank, we are following a Mindlessness script with a “Don't Think!” injunction: algorithms control the possibility of choice and frames of reference based on the potency of user data. We like to watch people do stuff. Even the silliest and most mundane of actions will garner a large audience if the person is right. It's fun to see celebrities and follow their every move, it's not the healthiest thing for them or us, but hey that's entertainment. The Truman Show conveys these points flawlessly and even serves as a prophetic film when it was released in the late 90s, in a time before reality television took off. We'll discuss that and simulation theory and so many more topics that arise as we discuss the show about a show! Resident fact-checker Chloe apologizes for the lack of fun facts in her second interjection and offers these in retribution: Associated with writer Truman Capote, Truman was at the height of its popularity in the early twentieth century, around the time Capote was born. It reached its highest point—Number 249—in 1945, the year Harry Truman succeeded FDR. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson chose it for their son, and it's also the name of Martha Stewart's young grandson.Truman Burbank was the ingenuous character played by Jim Carrey in The Truman Show, and Truman was the surname of Will in Will and Grace.Quick This: Lil Dicky-Follow us on Twitter: @entertain_thisFollow us on Instagram: @entertainthispodcastBuy some MerchCheck out our website too: entertainthis.netMusic Produced by @D33jw on Twitter, or @d33jw on Instagram

The Truman Show. What more can I say? A truly iconic film that told such an interesting story that we've ironically ended up seeing ourselves live everyday. In an age where social media is ever-present and everything we do can end up being recorded online for anyone to see at the drop of a hat, The Truman Show seems silly now, but it really isn't. But what makes this film so dynamic, interesting, and upheld almost twenty-something years later is the casting. But I have to ask, is Jim Carrey really everybody's favourite choice for Truman? Does he live up to the hype that this film is given? Is Jim Carrey's reputation as a funny-guy forcing too much, or does it prove that he's more than just giving the audience some laughs? Join me as I discuss Jim Carrey's performance as the titular Truman Burbank, and determine if his performance as this naive, yet humble man is really all that great, and up to par, or if its just short of fantastic. Are there moments where I feel like Truman should've been played by someone else? Stick around. The Truman Show is a 1998 American psychological science fiction comedy-drama film directed by Peter Weir, produced by Scott Rudin, Andrew Niccol, Edward S. Feldman, and Adam Schroeder, and written by Niccol. “He doesn't know it, but everything in Truman Burbank's (Jim Carrey) life is part of a massive TV set. Executive producer Christof (Ed Harris) orchestrates "The Truman Show," a live broadcast of Truman's every move captured by hidden cameras. Cristof tries to control Truman's mind, even removing his true love, Sylvia (Natascha McElhone), from the show and replacing her with Meryl (Laura Linney). As Truman gradually discovers the truth, however, he must decide whether to act on it.”

In this film, Truman (Jim Carrey) and his entire life is a TV set. From the visionary Christof (Ed Harris), through hidden-cameras records and broadcasts Truman's life for the world to see. However, recent events made Truman realize that his reality is not what he believes it to be. For some this is a classic, and for many this will be their first time with The Truman Show. "Cue the Sun." These infamous words are from The Truman Show (1998), starring Jim Carrey and Ed Harris. The movie follows the life of Truman Burbank, a particularly unfortunate man. He had always believed that the people he knew and the people that he loved had always cared about him, but this was not the case. In fact, every person Truman had ever become friends with, had loved, or had talked to on the streets was a hired actor that was getting paid to act as the townspeople in Truman's city. Truman had always believed his life was real, but it was actually a 24/7 reality television show that detailed every moment of Truman's life. So, when Truman finally started to realize the secrets behind his life, he began formulating a plan to escape his television fame and find a life in the real world. In the premiere episode of "The Nerdsology Broadcast", host Nicholas Stone will break down the character of Truman Burbank, how the realization of his fake life affected the character, and how the movie addresses the classic enigma of fate versus free will.

The NBA lost the plot last season and I have 20 burning questions for this upcoming NBA Season. The show became more important than the game, to the point where the very superstars that created the social media frenzy supposedly powering interest in the league balked when interest in their futures inevitably overshadowed their actual work product. It was uncomfortable watching Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, and many others come to the same realization Truman Burbank did when he realized his entire life was being broadcasted to billions of consumers and he had little choice but to play along. That better not happen again this year. A whirlwind free agency left the title chase wide open and created an on-court product that even the most inept salesperson should have no trouble promoting. If the NBA can’t find a way to make actual basketball compelling to the masses this year, we have a serious problem. There’s no superstar free agent drama on the horizon to distract us, nor is there any dominant-yet-stale superteam there to turn the regular season into something between a complete waste of time and a weighty existential dilemma. This season should be all about the basketball, and that’s ultimately why we devote so much of our time to following this silly league. In that spirit, I’ve crafted 20 burning basketball questions that will decide the league’s trajectory this season. You won’t see anything about trade targets on this list, and this is also a Giannis Antetokunmpo speculation-free zone. Instead, these are 20 questions that directly pertain to what happens on the actual basketball court. I can’t wait to find out the answers.----Enjoy the episode today!!----To share your thoughts:Leave a comment on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. In case I don’t see ya, good afternoon, good evening and goodnight !
