Finding your Superpowers and Inner Voice Not considering photography. Ask yourself. What am I good at? Why am I good at it? How did I get good at it.What do others think I am good at? Was I always good at it? Listener responses first: George McCane: Organization. Something that I should add to my comment is that I am a Contemplative Photographer. One aspect of my craft that I enjoy doing is to take lyrics of a song and then figuring out how to bring those lines about using photographs rather than videos. As you can imagine it takes quite a bit of organization to bring about the whole concept of making the shot and making it work. Brie Stockwell: Ability to focus and learn a new skill, dig in, be resourceful and flexible. Don’t give up. Geoff Allen: I think mine is curiosity. And I think especially curiosity about how things work, and how they’re interconnected. Lori Rowland: An observer and listener to nature. I can be absorbed and be one with the landscape around me. A few that resonated with me from the book: Greg Vaughn: "Stepping Back and assessing the entire situation before acting." Scott Bourne: “Knowing how to give up. I learn to be at peace with my subject on their terms, not on mine.” Don Komarechka: “Failures and mistakes should be reveled in, as you don’t learn anything from doing it right the first time!” Sean Bagshaw: Positive and upbeat outlook. Julie Lee: “There is no pressure to create a masterpiece, but only to explore the many ways of expression and warm up my creativity.” Rick’s super powers: Ability to Communicate and have an awareness of the situation. Ability to predict when and where activity will happen. Focus on a project and never give up. My super power: I resonate with so many things that were already covered. But as I was reading this book I challenged myself to identify my unique super power before I went on to Rick’s super powers. And I came up with Curiosity. Like Geoff earlier and like Rick mentions in the book where a psychologist stated “boundless curiosity” as one of his super powers. Curiosity is what drives me beyond the borders of my region and out into the wilderness and to many a destination I’ve been to, and many a destination I desire to experience. A strong sense of curiosity gives me a sense of discovery. I believe that I am always learning something in photography and my curiosity drives that notion. If I ever stop being curious about the world around me I think it’s time for me to do something else. Other chapters in the book: Your Secret Weapon The Rollercoaster ride of creatives Idea to image The importance of your conversation Criticism: the good, the bad and the ugly Fine art: public opinion and pocketbooks Specializing in not specializing Creating a sense of mystery Photography and the death of reality Where to go for great photographs & inspiration Know your audience and build your brand Analyze this A little help from my friends Changing lanes The business of being creative Lessons learned in the rainforest All together now

We don’t all have the same taste.” Pablo Picasso: “We all know that art is not truth. Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth.” What’s needed on the Photo Artist’s Pallette Scott Adams: “Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.” Subjectivity of art, originality “Not getting the iconic shots” complaint from a workshop attendee. (story of second workshop in Hawaii, off on my own) Deeper thinking. “Consider your storyline and what your picture will say to the viewer” Imagination: We must use our imagination as we did when we were kids. Introduction and Announcements I am your host, Brent Bergherm. Welcome to Latitude Photography podcast, the place where travel-outdoor photographers come to learn, grow, create and be inspired. We’re all on a journey to make more images and to do so with purpose. Thank you so much for being here. Rick, you’re back once again. Thank you so much for being here to share with us some thoughts and tidbits of wisdom regarding our photography and how to approach things if we’re looking to make it a part-time or even a full-time endeavor. Main Topic: The Business of Photography It’s a business.  Always have a “cush.” Your money can work harder for you then you can. It takes a lot of peanuts to feed an elephant. You never know who is watching. Socialize or succumb. Networking is needed. Listening is as important as hearing. You have no competition. Never mistake motion for action. You don’t drown by falling in water. You only drown if you stay there. Never give up! Emotional Intelligence is key. Write it down. Please remember, I’m running a special right now. If you purchase my Master Photo Print online course you’ll get a free year of Latitude Photography School once it’s released. This offer is good until July 31, 2020 and it is good for all who have purchased the course, whether it was a year ago that you bought it, or if it’s today. Today Rick Sammon joins us once again and we’re talking about his latest book, Photo Quest. Rick, thanks for coming back!  I’m very much looking forward to this conversation about Discovering our Photographic and Artistic Voice. Main Topic: Photo Quest Preface Slow down (When I first slowed down my photography became so much better. However, we can have various phases in our lives where we need to slow down all over again. Maybe for different reasons. The creative process is often best achieved when ample time is allowed for thoughtful contemplation of the subject and how it’s interpreted.) Sometimes we have to think very fast and act fast. How do we not get overwhelmed with all that we have to think about? Defining what’s important in our experience Is there a difference between “artistic images” and some other images you shoot? You have a gallery “what’s possible” on your site. Help me understand what you’re doing here. Think like a painter (additive process, add what you want to the scene, nothing more) Think selectively about your image (the individual parts vs making only global edits) The mindset of a painter (can help us create more creative and artistic images.) Chiaroscuro (contrasts, light and dark, helps give depth) Sfumato (smoke/cloudy like effect, gives softness to an image) I feel like I’m in one of my classes. Compositional Principles Contrast Range (differences between camera and the eye) Direction of light (light illuminates but shadows define) Quality of light (diffuse or specular, soft or hard) Color of light Movement (lit objects, I’ve always thought of this as moving subjects, but to consider the light as moving does put it in a different “light” (bad pun)) Effects of shadows (technical and emotional) This helps create separation of elements and gets to be a little more advanced in understanding what’s happening, and more importantly in controlling the situation so you get the desired results. Cycle back to Girl with a Pearl Earring if we didn’t talk about it already. Lighting Effects Gradual Peaceful The effects of our personal perception and attitude when we are shooting and processing our images. Ideas and evolutions. First image by Rick First image by Brent Total of three images each. Talk about images where we can apply these principles? Share: If you only share one episode, please consider sharing this one. Just hit that share button in your listening app of choice and email it to someone that you know will benefit from this conversation. Amy and Mike invited author and admissions professional Rick Clark to describe the importance of family conversations about college admissions.  What are five things you will learn in this episode? Should parents decide which schools their teens should apply to? What is a useful technique to make sure parents and teens have the same college goals? At what points should families start talking about college? When is a discussion about paying for college necessary? How can family conversations help prepare for unexpected changes or crises? MEET OUR GUEST Rick Clark is the Director of Undergraduate Admission at Georgia Tech. Animal House. It invented the view of fraternities in movies. Heck, it could be argued that it even reshaped the fraternity experience on college campuses nationwide (even though it was based on real experiences that were tamed DOWN for the movie). No matter how you look at it, National Lampoon's Animal House is a groundbreaking comedy that stands the test of time. And, oh yeah. It's a car movie. Central to the plot of this movie is the 1964 Lincoln Continental with it's iconic suicide doors, trusted to Kent Dorfman by his brother... only for it to become THE DEATHMOBILE!  Joining us for this podcast is Rick Bruner. Rick knows his comedy. He's the manager of the Virginia Beach Funny Bone. He also grew up working around cars - including a time when he worked in a car museum that housed such iconic vehicles as the Muenster Coach, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and cars owed by Clark Gable and Greta Garbo. We have a lot of fun talking about the college experience, the cars, the comedy and trying to figure out how the Delta's ended up driving some of the cars they have in the movie.
