BFG Podcast #164: Two very different takes on American Judaism: 'Between the Temples' and the 'Hollywoodland' exhibit at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures

It's a Jewish-themed episode of the BFG Podcast this week. What else is new, you're asking, and you will be right to some extent, but that's just how the dreidel fell, content-wise. First up, host Neal Pollack visits the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, and finds the Jewish content extremely wanting, particularly in the 'Hollywoodland' exhibit, which purports to be about the Jewish founders of the eight major studios of Hollywood's golden age but quickly descends into stereotypes, calling the studio heads "predators" and tyrants" and not spending any time interested in their actual Judaism. Neal laments the lack of pride in Jewish identity in the exhibit.Special guest Michael Kaplan, a former writer for Roseanne and Frasier (not Friends), part of a group of L.A. writers who have protested the exhibit, laments the obvious tokenism of the museum display, as well as its smallness and lack of consequence. Not once, he points out, does the exhibit celebrate the Jewish tradition of storytelling that led the founders to establish the movie business in the first place. The exhibit is a cryin' shame, and both Neal and Michael worry about the imprint it will have on the many thousands of schoolchildren who march through the museum every year.Speaking of Jewish storytelling, Rebecca Kurson drops in to talk to Neal about 'Between the Temples,' a new movie that celebrates ordinary Judaism in all its messy glory. Becky saw Between the Temples on the date that we learned Hamas had murdered six Jewish hostages, and boy did she need this tonic, which depicts American Jewish life and celebrates it as not only normal, but necessary. Carol Kane, in full Ruth Gordon mode, is an older lady who decides, late in life, to become a Bat Mitzvah. Despite some twitchy direction, this is one of the best and most accurate depictions of Jewish devotional life in recent memory. If only the Academy Museum would have done the same.If you're listening this week, then Mazel tov!

In the 1970s, engineer Sheldon Kaplan and his colleagues were tasked with creating an auto-injector pen to be used by US soldiers needing a nerve agent antidote. The Pentagon called it the ComboPen but, in 1987, it was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as the EpiPen, for patients with allergies. The device is carried by millions of people all over the world as it can quickly and easily deliver a shot of adrenaline to anyone at risk of death from anaphylactic shock. Sheldon Kaplan died in 2009 and was inducted into the US National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2016. Sheldon's son Michael Kaplan and colleague Michael Mesa tell Vicky Farncombe the story behind the pen.

Welcome to Embrace Shabbat. In last week's parsha, Parshat Yitro, Rabbeinu Bachya teaches that it is incumbent upon a woman to daven for her children when she lights Shabbat candles. She should pray that Hashem grant her children the ability to learn and be lit up from Torah. Tefillah that is said alongside the performance of a mitzvah is especially powerful and likely to be answered. In the merit of lighting Shabbat candles, which provides physical ohr , her children should be בעלי תורה , lit up from the spiritual light bestowed upon a person from the Torah. The Sefer Kav Yashar (Chapter 81) teaches: הַכֹּל תָּלוּי בָּאִשָּׁה , everything depends on the woman. A woman has the ability to guide her children and her family along the right path. As it says in Parshat Yitro, כֹּה תֹּאמַר לְבֵית יַעֲקֹב - אֵלּוּ הַנָּשִׁים- וְתַגֵּ֖יד לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל . Hashem told Moshe to speak with the women first because they are the ones that teach their children the proper ways to act and how to follow the Torah path (Midrash Rabbah on Shemot 28:2). In his Igeret Teshuva , Rabbeinu Yonah expounds on the role of a woman. The woman is the one that sends her children off to school in the morning and continues to worry about them throughout the day. When the children return home after a difficult day at school, she is waiting with mercy, kindness, and compassion, ready to dole out soft words of encouragement. She has more of an opportunity to hear her child out and provide moral support. Additionally, she makes sure that her children don't waste time and teaches them about fear of sin from their youth. Therefore, the modest women are the cause for the Torah learning and fear of G-d in their household. I recently heard the following incredible story while being menachem avel for a friend of mine, Mr. Michael Kaplan. He told me that at the funeral for his mother, a grandchild got up to speak and told the following story: At age 13, his grandmother asked him if he would agree to make a Yissachar-Zevulun contract with her. She agreed to give him a monthly stipend to cover his expenses in exchange for a chelek in his learning. This went on for years. He finished Masechtot and Shas, and said that it was the chizzuk of his grandmother that got him through the grueling hours that he invested. This grandmother was such a wise woman. She knew that this “contract” would show a chashivut for her grandson's learning, which would give him the motivation to continue his hard work. Simultaneously, she even got a portion of the schar for his learning! It is incredible for a grandmother to have such intuition! נשים במאי זכיין , by what merit do women merit a portion in Torah? Through bringing their children to learn Torah in shul and sending her husband to study in the Beis Medrash. נר מצוה ותורה אור , a mitzvah is the receptacle for the oil, but the Torah is the light itself. A woman receives a chelek in Torah learning from encouraging her children and her husband. As we know, tefillah is the greatest hishtadlut of all. (Of course, a person cannot rely on miracles and must invest in basic hishtadlut , but tefillah is the main hishtadlut .) Therefore, the best time for a woman to pray her family is when she is lighting the Shabbat candles, because that is the נר מצוה ותורה אור , as the Gemara Shabbat (23b) teaches: one who becomes accustomed to lighting candles will be rewarded with children who are talmidei chachamim. Have a wonderful day and a Shabbat Shalom.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East, and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Editor David Horovitz and senior analyst Haviv Rettig Gur join host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode, marking one year to the Daily Briefing. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett held a press conference early this week announcing the availability of a fourth coronavirus vaccine dose for those 60 and older. Why has opposition head Benjamin Netanyahu held off criticizing this policy -- as opposed to coalition member and Health Minister Nitzan Horovitz. Also, what is currently happening in schools across the nation? We then hear about an in-depth interview Rettig Gur conducted with Michael Kaplan, an American-Israeli former NASA engineer who worked on the James Webb telescope, which was launched on December 25. Rettig Gur gets nerdy explaining the tech behind the challenging telescope mission and brings forward the unsurmountable professional obstacles Kaplan faced when attempting immigration to Israel in 2015. We finish the program looking back at our first Daily Briefing episode, which hit ears a year ago. Discussed articles include: Two pilots killed in IDF helicopter crash off Haifa coast Tens of thousands race for fourth COVID shot as Israeli campaign blazes ahead Top health official says Israel has ‘no control' over Omicron as cases keep surging Health minister pans ‘apocalyptic scenarios' after PM predicts 50k daily COVID cases Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Dr. Kaplan has been associated with Penn for over 20 years as a graduate student, a postdoctoral fellow, and most recently as a Lecturer and Lab Coordinator for the Biological Basis of Behavior (BBB) Program. Born and raised in Philadelphia, he graduated from Wesleyan University with degrees in biochemistry and philosophy, then sojourned in New York City to dabble in the music business, where he wrote non-hit songs with titles like “Brain in a Jar.” Perhaps unsurprisingly, he ended up back in science. His research at Penn has focused on synaptic plasticity, both short-term (with Dr. Marc Dichter) and long-term (with Dr. Ted Abel). He is the Master of Ceremonies and head zookeeper at the Neurolab, an undergraduate teaching lab for electrophysiology and computer simulations. Dr. Kaplan has won the BBB Society Teaching Award and was the recipient of the Dean's Award for Distinguished Teaching by Affiliated Faculty in 2009. He teaches The Neuroscience of Music.

Welcome back to Life After Business. This episode is part two to my interview with Michael Kaplan. Michael was a financial partner in a carpet cleaning business called ZeroRez. To recap, episode 135 is the companion episode to this one. During the last episode, Michael told the story of how he got involved in ZeroRez and how they grew a 300 thousand dollar business to 18 million. This episode, Michael explains why he exited the business and how his relationship with his partner changed. Michael and his partner had an agreement laid out since day one. There was a clear protocol to solve problems established. As time went on, however, the agreements began to erode. Michael honestly explores how the communication broke down and the last straw event that led to what he calls “the Mexican Standoff.” Michael is very candid about what happened in his partnership and he doesn’t shift all the blame to his partner. It is a real glimpse of how business partnerships work and why you need to lay all your cards out and stick to your guns. What you will learn: A quick recap of part one of this interview. How the original partnership began and the initial agreements. How Michael protected himself when other partners left. How they handled the first departures. What is a “shotgun clause” and why do you need one? A change in capital structure. A new Omaha location and the lessons learned from the experience. An offer to purchase equity in the franchise. Why they didn’t just buy the franchise. The beginning of agreement erosion and the issues that developed. The launch of new locations and the success and growth rate. Addressing the problem of “meddling” with the technicians. A change in company culture and Michael’s view on it. Why he left the leadership team and the fallout. The last straw that led to Michael’s exit from the company. The Mexican Stand-Off that got Michael out of the bad situation. The lessons learned from the experience. How Michael vets business relationships now. Links and Resources: GEXP Collaborative Red Hook Investments Michael’s emailBooya Capital Partners Life After Business Episode 135 Takeaway: Make sure you have solid agreements with any partners from the very beginning of your business. Be transparent and make sure everybody is on the same page. About Michael: Michael Kaplan spent most of his 20s thinking he would go into some sort of law practice. However, he found himself partnering with a friend to purchase ZeroRez. After a few stumbles and lucky economic breaks, Michael and his partners were able to scale the carpet cleaning business to 18 million dollars. After erosion of partnership agreements and some company culture issues came to light, Michael exited ZeroRez. He credits the use of a “shotgun clause” for diffusing the situation and teaching him something about his business expectations moving forward. He currently works with Red Hook Investments, a firm that specializes in turnarounds, private equity, and cash infusions.

Today’s guest has a story so big and honest, I had to break it into two episodes. Michael Kaplan was a financial partner in ZeroRez, a Minnesota based carpet cleaning company. He is super authentic and honest about what it was like to scale a 300 thousand dollar business up to 18 million. Part one of this interview focuses on how Michael stumbled into the carpet cleaning business and the ups and downs that he and his partners encountered. We discuss the mistakes Michael and his partners made with money and hiring. Both are costly to a business. Michael also leveraged an economic downturn and existing radio budget to work in the business’s favor. It is really an impressive story of a radio campaign changing things overnight. I ask Michael to tell me about how they handled the sudden growth and what the business did to encourage repeat customers. He answered with brutal and refreshing honesty that I think every business owner should hear. If you really want to know what it’s like in the trenches in a business, today’s episode is an accurate depiction. What you will learn: Michael’s early experience in startups, law, and how he wound up in the carpet cleaning business. What the purchase of ZeroRez looked like and why it was a bad deal. The mistakes that Michael and his partners made early on. How the 2008 housing crisis worked in ZeroRez’s favor. The radio budget and how it transformed the business. The things Michael thinks made the company successful. The hiring mistakes that ZeroRez made early on and how they corrected them. Why investing in good people can help you fix outgrown SOPs. How Michael shifted his mindset to a value-based one. The cliffhanger for part two. Takeaways: Michael’s story is a great example of what it takes to build a company. It takes balls and you can’t just be passive. Part two of this interview has some great nuggets about working with partners. Everybody has drama in their business, especially behind closed doors. Having a partner changes how you do anything in a business and part two showcases that. I WILL."   Advice for the stressed achiever:   You have to create the meaning that allow you to enjoy every aspect of what your doing.  You have to bring that enjoyment to the table if it's not there.  You have to bring the laughter, you have to bring the joy, you have to bring the harmony, you have to bring the fun; you have to bring all these things to the table.   Understand that life is about the journey, not the achievement.  Life is about happily achieving, not achieving to be happy.  Remove the stress from the achievement: keep the intensity, remove the stress.  “Do” with gratitude, joy, and happiness.  Enjoy the process.  You can keep the intensity, thats great, but you must let go of the stress.   SHOW NOTES: http://kaplanmorrell.com   Click Here for all MindMill Episodes   If you enjoy The MindMill Podcast, please subscribe to our show on your favorite podcast platform or share us on social media!  Any MindMill love goes a long way!
