There is a new trend going around. You probably have come across it and have heard about it. It's a new way of parenting, it's called gentle parenting. Some also call it positive parenting, respectful parenting or raising resilient kids. This is a very different approach of parenting from the traditional way most of us were raised. If you are like me and you were raised with conservative Christian parents, you probably experienced spanking, threats and punishments. The thing was, that was the only way to raise kids back then. Chances are, your parents like mine, had no idea there was another way. In today's podcast episode, I had the honor of interviewing Wendy. Wendy Snyder is a Positive Parenting educator, family life coach & advocate. She is certified in Redirecting Children's Behavior & The Joy of Parenting Program. Wendy founded her online business, Fresh Start Family, so that she could spread the message of positive parenting across the world. She is the developer of a variety of online positive parenting courses and also has a monthly membership program to further support families. Wendy helps families parent from a place of great purpose and intention by creating healthy, respectful & cooperative relationships. In this episode you will learn: - What is gentle parenting? - How to create a close emotional relationship with your kids. - What punishments and threats really do to your relationships with kids- Should we teach our kids to fear us? - What about spanking and what the Bible says about it?- So how do we REALLY get our kids to listen to us? What is detachment? In today’s episode, we take a look at what detachment truly is and we debunk some of the misconceptions that surround detachment. To give you a brief overview here, here at Fresh Start Family, we believe that true detachment is when nothing that someone else says or does disturbs your sense of value & worth. This is so important in parenting because as much as we want to control things like: our children’s behavior the opinions of others and many other aspects of life that are out of our control Find out more in the show notes: www.freshstartfamilyonline.com/68
This week we continued our Fresh Start sermon series with a look at Colossians 3:18-21, where we see how we can get a fresh start in our family life.
Do you ever feel like you are at a loss when it comes to how to positively approach your child's behavior? I myself have a very strong willed little girl, and often wonder if I am being a push over when I let her push my boundaries, but then don't want to always be correcting or nagging her. Wendy Snyder, is a Godsend to mamas because of what she offers in terms of Redirecting Children's Behavior. Wendy believes in connection over correction and is going to share all about her Positive Parenting Approach with you mamas today. This mama of two is a Positive Parenting educator, family life coach & advocate. She is certified in Redirecting Children's Behavior & The Joy of Parenting Program. Wendy founded her online business, Fresh Start Family, so that she could spread the message of positive parenting across the world. She is the developer of online positive parenting courses and also has a monthly membership program to further support families. I downloaded Wendy's free guide and what I have already read through has helped me immensely! My daughter is resistant to change, asks why a lot, is highly sensitive, and I can relate to all of the bullets on her list. She talks about how to nurture a child's strong will through acknowledging their creativity, or natural leadership rather than criticisms. She talks about different approaches to strong willed kids and why having them is actually a blessing. She uses positive role models and successful people, that were once self professed challenging kids as examples. Wendy assists families to parent with great purpose and intention by creating healthy, respectful & cooperative relationships. Today we chat about: How Wendy's experience with her own challenging child led her to become a positive parenting educator Why our own upbringing can affect our parenting approaches immensely How to shift the paradigm towards more positivity when it comes to speaking to our children What constitutes a "challenging" or "strong willed child" and why it should be celebrated How strong willed children are often quite creative and successful as adults Wendy's advice on how to approach topics like sharing, temper tantrums, friendships, etc. My own experience with my toddler and Wendy's tips for positive parenting shifts when I feel I am being too lenient How to avoid being "too" lenient or too strict Why being honest and humble with our kids when we our frustrated is better than hiding it or yelling How to reframe simple sentences with our kids Why phrases like "your being a bad friend" is not helpful for challenging kids. Switching the conversation and giving kids options for sharing, for instance, makes them feel less out of control How Wendy got into the online parenting coaching business Why business isn't always easy but persistence is key
“What kind of leader am I?” All my sisters who have a strong-willed child, please raise your hand. All my sisters with more than one strong-willed child, raise both hands (unless you’re driving). Those hands you have raised will be praise hands by the end of this episode. Our guest Wendy Snyder is incredible! I went into this conversation feeling like “yeah, I know about strong-willed children…three to be exact,” and came out feeling resourced and confident. I’m so so so excited to share her and her messages with you! Our conversation is so cool because we talk about everything from details to philosophies. At one point she & I basically renamed Positive Parenting to Powerful Parenting and shifted our own perspectives and grew ourselves while we were sharing our hearts. That is a power of a conversation between moms who are passionate about figuring this motherhood thing out, sharing ideas and stories, and basically showing up as best we can even when we’re tasked with challenges like raising strong-willed children. Wendy is going to show us how we can be both firm and kind leaders in our home and encourage us in such a genuinely supportive and informative way—I know you’ll love this conversation as much as I do! Before launching this next season, we wanted to highlight a handful of favorite podcasts we’ve been guests on recently. We speak with some amazing folks about Upbringing, our mission and approach in practicing powers beyond control when it comes to daily discipline with our kids! The Fresh Start Family show is hosted by husband and wife team Terry and Wendy Snyder, parenting educators and coaches. A Positive Parenting community, Fresh Start Family tackles a range of topics that bring reality, hope, and a path to more peace in the home and world. We loved chatting with Wendy about all things SIBLING CONFLICT! We flip a few limiting beliefs we hold about sibling challenges (and the concept of mistakes in general) and discuss how choosing to approach conflict, our role and our goal with fresh eyes can help kids learn and grow adaptively. We also unpack and walk through some specific ways we can avoid creating cycles of victim and aggressor as we slowly but surely build kids’ awareness of themselves and one another through a challenge. Fun stuff! We hope you enjoy our conversation with Fresh Start Family as much as we did! A mother to two vibrant children, Wendy has been dedicated to the application of Positive Parenting in her home since 2009. Wendy discovered the work of Positive Parenting when she was challenged and overwhelmed with the many trials of parenthood early in her motherhood experience. The endless opportunities for practice, failure, learning and growth have created a deep fluency for Wendy in the language and curriculum of Redirecting Children's Behavior. Through her company Fresh Start Family, Wendy offers in-person and online seminars, coaching, classes & memberships to give parents the support and tools they need to raise their children with firmness, kindness, strong limits, compassion and empathy. Her delicate balance of encouragement, empowerment, and coaching inspires parents to take action and be the change they wish to see in their families, homes and communities. Wendy obtained her BS in Marketing from San Diego State University and Parenting Certification from the International Network for Children & Families. Before her move to parenting education, Wendy enjoyed a decade-long career in the corporate action sports industry. She now uses her business savvy to provide a solid return on investment for parents who trust her with their precious time and resources. Active in her Southern California community, Wendy can be found in the garden at her kids' school, serving in her church, or enjoying a date night with her husband of 15 years, Terry. Committed to maintaining a healthy work/life balance, Wendy loves to surf, jog, and practice Pilates. Friends describe Wendy as an effervescent joy, a vanguard for change, and a relentless encourager.
