How does Turkey navigate its strategic balancing act between Russia and the EU? Turkey stands at a geopolitical crossroads between Moscow's influence, Brussels' expectations, and its own shifting ambitions. In this episode, we dive into how Turkey manages its complex relationships with both Russia and the European Union, what “strategic autonomy” really means, and how domestic politics play into global positioning. To unpack this complex dynamic, Ricardo Silvestre (Movimento Liberal Social) is joined by Elif Menderes, Program Manager at the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and a specialist in political communication. They discuss her chapter in the ELF publication Towards a New Iron Curtain, titled 'Türkiye's Perspective on the Resurgence of the Iron Curtain: Balancing Relations with Russia and the European Union'.  This podcast is produced by the European Liberal Forum in collaboration with Movimento Liberal Social and Fundacja Liberté!, with the financial support of the European Parliament. In the new look and new sounding sixth season of the Let's Talk Human Rights podcast, titled “Getting it Right – Championing Human Rights for Effective Governance”, our host Masechaba Mdaka explores the progress and successes in the human rights space across a range of critical issues, focusing on how these challenges are being addressed and the solutions that are proving effective. Countless organisations are doing vital work—both behind the scenes and on the frontlines as human rights defenders. Yet we seldom pause to recognise or celebrate when we get it right. These moments of success have a direct impact on the protection of democratic values, the promotion of equity, and the strengthening of governance—benefits that should be enjoyed by every citizen of every nation. Episode 1 delves into Malawi's Children's Act and the country's efforts to end child marriage. Masechaba investigates how the Malawian government took the progressive step of amending its Constitution to raise the legal age of a child from 16 to 18, and speaks with those who are working tirelessly to ensure the continued illegal practice is both discouraged and eradicated. This powerful and deeply moving episode shares the lived experiences of two individuals—a young girl and a young woman—and follows their personal journeys, revealing how child marriage has shaped their lives. It sheds light on the devastating impact of this harmful traditional practice, particularly on young women and girls, stripping them of their agency, denying them future opportunities, and often condemning them to lives of dependency and abuse. Africa is undergoing a remarkable transformation with an exponential surge in internet connectivity, marking a significant milestone in the continent's technological advancement. However, this commendable progress in bridging the digital divide comes with a stark and concerning juxtaposition – Africa finds itself trailing behind in the crucial realm of cybersecurity. This pressing issue took centre stage at the inaugural Africa Cybersecurity Summit held in Togo's vibrant capital, serving as a clarion call for action. This connectivity boom has brought about an unintended consequence – a glaring vulnerability to cyber threats and attacks. Africa's cybersecurity landscape is characterised by gaps in infrastructure, limited awareness, and a shortage of skilled professionals capable of defending against and mitigating these digital threats. The lack of stringent regulatory frameworks and cybersecurity policies exacerbates the situation, leaving businesses, governments, and individuals exposed to the perils of the digital age. In a recent publication commissioned by the United Nations in partnership with the Alliance for Universal Digital Rights in February 2023 entitled Securing our Human Rights in our Digital World, it notes, “Imagine a future in which all citizens of the digital eco-system, no matter who they are, or where they live, can enjoy equal rights to safety, freedom and dignity. Because the digital environment, like the natural environment, transcends borders.” Sounds really good on paper, but how does this translate into our everyday lives? In our latest Let's Talk Human Rights episode, our host Masechaba Mdaka is joined by Wakesho Kililo, who is the is the Africa Coordinator, Digital Rights, Greater Internet Freedom Project at Internews. She serves as a member of the Law Society of Kenya Public Interest Litigation and Legal Aid committee. “Access Denied! My right to self not authorised” The plight of LGBTQIA+ communities in an increasingly intolerant world”. In 2019, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation launched a campaign titled “An African Thing”. The significance of this campaign was to empirically document how many instances in various African cultures and societies where homosexuality could be found before colonisation. Evidence of this is found in many of the artworks in different parts of Africa such as Ghana and Burkina Faso in the 18th and 19th centuries. For more on this, please see the show notes for the “An African Thing” campaign. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual Rights, also known as LGBTQIA+ Rights, have been and continue to be a highly debated and controversial topic among many African societies both religiously and culturally. In the majority of African countries, same-sex relationships or acts of homosexuality are punishable by law. This includes public condemnation, incarceration, and in extreme cases also serving the death penalty such as the recent case with the bill in the Ugandan Parliament to exercise the maximum penalty in the form of the death sentence for any support, acts, or defending LGBTQIA+ Rights. To date, countries like Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, and Nigeria still uphold laws that criminalise homosexuality. There have been notable changes in recent years in Mozambique, Seychelles, Angola, and Botswana, which have amended their laws not to criminalise LGBTQIA+ rights. But is it enough? Sometimes, the phobia transcends the spheres of governments and lawmakers who enforce these laws. Even with an active and engaged civil society, many are still divided on the priority of protection and recognition of LGBTQIA+ communities. When dislikes or differing opinions graduate beyond intolerance and lean towards hatred and acts of violence - this alone makes it criminal. The prevalence of Gender Based Violence towards members of the LGBTQIA+ community is a phenomenon that goes mostly ignored and often not taken seriously. Similarly, stereotyped mindsets towards members of the LGBTQIA+ community are those that some people see as giving them license to commit atrocities and condone behaviours to diminish the existence of others. In this episode, launching on International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, our host Masechaba Mdaka is joined by Hijabi and Aquiline Isabelle Mkhosie. Hijabi is the pseudonym for our Kenyan guest for her protection. Hijabi is a queer disabled feminist and a human rights activist. She is an intersectional feminist and continuously creates spaces for women with disabilities, and the LGBTQIA+ community. Hajibi's work is centered on sexuality, religion, and disability justice. Hijabi's work on disability justice is centered on bodily autonomy and integrity; and disabled folks are diverse, living, and affected by different forms of marginalisation. She is also an advocate for inclusive and affirming faith spaces. Friedrich Naumann Foundation Sub-Saharan Africa · FNF Africa · FNF S4 Ep 2 Transcript.docx.pdf — PDF (152.8 KB)

According to the February 2022 United Nations Population Fund statistics on FGM, 14 African countries, predominantly in the west, east and horn of Africa regions still practice FGM. As part of aspiration six priority 51 of the African Union Agenda 2063, it aims to eliminate all forms of gender based violence and discrimination against women and girls. Political leaders are playing their own critical part. The African Union has appointed the President of Burkina Faso, Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, as the champion for the elimination of FGM and launched the Salima Initiative in 2019. Currently the two English speaking regions of Cameroon are witnessing an escalation of violence that has led to the death of several people. This is a result of violent confrontations between Cameroon's military and the defence forces of Ambazonia (an independent state in the Anglophone regions of Southern Cameroon) since AFCON, the main international men's association football competition in Africa, started. There has been a rise in kidnappings, mass arrests, detentions as well as attacks on educational establishments, just to name a few issues. And then thirdly, what policymakers can do to boost and accelerate entrepreneurship in their respective countries. In this episode of IAF TALK we going to meet Jyoti Sachavirawong and Julian Kirchherr. Julian works as a manager in the consulting industry. He is also associated with Utrecht University in the Netherlands where he works as a researcher, and in both of these jobs he does a lot of work together with start-ups but also with policymakers to boost entrepreneurship. So this is very much a topic he is very passionate about. Jyoti is a business consultant, and I has been working on advising companies on how they can enter a market. She provides advice on marketing and communication strategy. But prior to that, she was fortunate enough to have had spent several years in the liberal family working with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation office initially in Malaysia, working on women empowerment issues, and subsequently moving on to work at the regional level on economic freedom and human rights.

Today's episode is very special – not only because Education is a tremendously important aspect for every person's development towards self-determination, prosperity and happiness in live but also because we would like to commemorate the late Dr Stefan Melnik who has contributed immensely to IAF, in fact he helped build and develop IAF to where it is today. Education has always been a theme very close to his heart. And this is why we would like to share with you a talk of four wonderful experts on Education that we recorded a few years back: In this episode we are meeting Professor James Tooley, who is best known for his work on low cost private education. He has worked in various parts of the world bringing together insights from his research and has published on low cost private education in – amongst others - the book “The beautiful tree”. Ekta Sodha actually is an entrepreneur who is active in the field of education, an edu-preneur perhaps, who runs a number of low-cost private schools in India. Manali Shah, who is also a facilitator at IAF and has worked for the CCS, the Center for Civil Society, in Delhi, who actually pioneered in India the idea of voucherizing the school system. And of course Dr. Stefan Melnik who has been an independent consultant specialising in training programmes for executives. He designed and directed workshops on human rights, the market economy, environmental issues, basics of liberalism, secularism and of course education reform – often but not exclusively at IAF. Stefan also moderated this discussion.

Poland has been mentioned so many times in recent news, because of the "LGBT Free Zones" - municipalities and regions of Poland that have declared themselves unwelcoming of an alleged "LGBT ideology", in order to ban equality marches and other LGBT events. Straight Friendly

In this episode, we are going to talk about a very important subject, which is very close to my heart. In this episode, we will be talking with and about transgender people. Transgender people have a gender identity or gender expression that differs from the sex that they were assigned at birth. Being transgender is not necessarily have anything to do with sexual orientation, because transgender people may identify as heterosexual (straight), homosexual (gay or lesbian), bisexual, asexual, or actually can decide not to label their sexual orientation at all. Now, usually, if we hear any news, or find any content about transgender people, we might be confronted with some bad news (you know). Cases of violence against trans people, unemployment for instance. Unfortunately, in some places, the whole process of coming out as a transgender can be really difficult. Among the different identities and groups of the L-G-B-T people, transgender people (either male, female or non-binary) are facing a lot of discrimination. Not only in the hetero-normative sphere, meaning in the "straight" society, but also within the LGBT community itself. As an Israeli, I will never forget the day when in 1998, while I was in primary school, Dana International, a transgender female singer from Israel, has won the Eurovision song contest. She brought so much pride, to so many people - with a really good song - DIVA. I loved this song! And you probably all know, some transgender figure, that can make you feel pride. Now, I believe in creating empowering content. A content that can connect us all. And this is why I chose, that first episode, which we will have about transgender people on the Straight Friendly podcast, will be an empowering one. Instead of talking about discrimination in the work sphere, we have decided to have our first talk with the story of Bianca Lewis. Bianca, who is a transgender woman, has got to a very senior position in the tech industry in Israel. She is also a board member of the LGBTech organization, which has branches in many countries around the world. The production of this episode came to reality thanks to the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in Jerusalem; and thanks to our volunteers: Alon Rosenblum, Ariel Skop, Oded Shpitzer & Amit Hameiri (TAU). And to our guests from LGBTech: Bianca Lewis and Shachar Grembek.

In this episode, we're going to talk about one of the biggest countries in the world, and probably with one of the hugest communities there. We all probably know that it is not really easy to be a part of the LGBTQ community in Russia these days. But we do not always know just how hard it is. We are happy to host this episode on one of the most active women in the Russian LGBTQ community: Bella Rapaport, who is a feminist, activist, and academic. Russia has more than 150 million people which means that statistically, the LGBTQ community is several million. Is the community in Russia united? Is it divided into sub-communities? Is it like in other countries, where life in big cities like Moscow is so different from life in the rest of the country? Is there communication between the different communities? Bella answers questions that show how, in the end, the life of the community in many countries and the community in Russia are not so different, except for current political affairs. The production of this episode came to reality thanks to the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in Jerusalem; and thanks to our volunteers: Alon Rosenblum, Ariel Skop and Anna Talisman.

“All politics is local” is a prevailing phrase – not only in U.S. politics. Apart from the strategic meaning it implies a liberal view of politics – starting off from the individual, who should be instrumental in all decisions that affect their life. Looking for solutions at the local level, involving responsible individuals and making use of decentralised local competences and knowledge are important principles to get local government politics close to citizens, encourage their participation, communicate with them more effectively and make government more efficient. However, in reality local politicians around the world are facing huge challenges to implement such principles due to administrative, legal, financial, political and practical problems.  In this episode of IAF TALK we are meeting Petra Franke and Kylie Hatton who facilitated our seminar on "Local Politics and Citizen's Participation" and share the insights and key learnings from the seminar.

For liberals private property is a defining characteristic of a free society. In our seminar "Liberal, Property and the Environment" we explored how the concept of private property might conceivably be a solution to problems as diverse as pollution, land degradation, overfishing, deforestation, species extinction and waste. Can enforcement of robust property rights help to protect the environment, rehabilitate areas that have suffered considerable damage, and promote the aim of achieving sustainability in the use of natural resources? Would the poor and disadvantaged sections of society stand to benefit? To what extent would successful “green” and “blue” growth policies benefit from efforts to apply and foster a property rights-based approach to economic growth and well-being? As you may have noticed, 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children starts today. We want to take this opportunity to dedicate today's podcast episode to women in Africa. The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom has set itself the mandate of advancing women rights causes in Sub-Saharan Africa and across the globe. The proportion of women in leading positions in business and politics is alarmingly low. Today we find ourselves in East Africa, more precisely in Moshi, the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. Activist Elizabeth Minde joins host Nangamso Kwinana. Elizabeth is a legal practitioner and an advocate of the high court of Tanzania, as well as managing director of Kilimanjaro Women Information Exchange and Community Organisation or KWIECO. Elizabeth and her organisation provide legal counselling to marginalised women in rural communities. Their vision is for a society that takes responsibility to protect all human rights. Using Apps for finding a shop or restaurant or looking for some friends nearby is already a reality and millions of people all around the world are using those conveniences every day. Still, this is just the first step of possible developments and changes of our cities. By using “big data” and digitalization our cities can turn into smart cities and help us to manage today’s and future challenges of growing cities in fields such as administration, urban planning, environment, economic development and others. Transparency, participation and better decision making should be among the chances of smarter cities as well. However - and especially from a liberal perspective - privacy protection and keeping autonomy of one’s own data must be taken into consideration. In this episode, hosted by Armin Reinartz, we're meeting Leah from South Africa who is the political head of Johannesburg's Department of Economic Development and gives us an insight in her work, Rashed from Bangladesh who is an architect involved in various urban projects with the government designing streets and addressing how people want to use them, and Marco from Mexico is especially focussing on smart regulations and smart legislation regarding urban development and city transformation and advises local and federal governments in Latin America to promote reforms.

Populists seem to be on the rise around the world and their opponents from different political camps seem to have difficulties to find the right antidote to fight that new (?) political force. Some place their bet on facts to fight lies, others on copying some of the populist features or trying to tackle what is perceived as the underlying causes that play into the hands of populists. But what is populism and why is it so dangerous for liberal open societies? What do populists have in common and how to deconstruct populism? In this episode of IAF TALK we're meeting Sven Gerst, Secretary General of IFLRY (International Federation of Liberal Youth) and Political Philosophy PhD Student at King's College London, and Radu Magdin, Global Analyst, Consultant and Trainer, who facilitated our international seminar on the topic.
