In this episode, I break down the exciting news of newly discovered geoglyphs in Peru that date back to 200 B.C., and that nearly double the number of known geoglyphs around the mysterious Nazca region. I then share some of my research regarding the infamous Nazca lines that were discovered in the 1930s. After Machu Picchu, the Nazca Lines consistently rank as one of the top ancient Peruvian sites that attract tens of thousands of tourists each year. Estimated to have been created as early as 500 B.C., the Nazca Lines cover hundreds of square miles are the most mysterious geoglyphs known to man. I think I came to the same conclusion that so many others have when I first flew over the Nazca lines years ago... it seems as if these anomalous works of art were tailor made to be viewed from thousands of feet up in the air. A geoglyph is a large design or motif (generally longer than 4 metres) produced on the ground and typically formed by clastic rocks or similarly durable elements of the landscape, such as stones, stone fragments, gravel, or earth. A positive geoglyph is formed by the arrangement and alignment of materials on the ground in a manner akin to petroforms, while a negative geoglyph is formed by removing part of the natural ground surface to create differently coloured or textured ground in a manner akin to petroglyphs. Geoglyphs are generally a type of land art, and sometimes rock art. A hill figure is created on a slope, so that it can be seen from a distance. In Episode 33, I dig in and provide additional evidence that the Ancients were trying to program the universe when they built the megalithic structures and geoglyphs around the world. Mayans believed that the will and actions of the gods could be read in the stars, moon, and planets, so they built their most important buildings with astronomy in mind. Maya daykeepers published astronomical tables tracking the movements of celestial bodies, and I believe that the Mayan Calendar Round was constructed because they thought the universe was simulated. The Calendar Round was based on two overlapping annual cycles: a 260-day sacred year and a 365-day secular year. In the Calendar Round, each day was assigned a day number and day name. The Calendar Round is a 52-year cycle, and each interval the calendar resets itself, making time an infinite loop.The Egyptians knew the distance between the inner planets and may have represented that distance when they constructed the Giza strip Pyramids. Researchers have also found that the inner planet distance spacing was used in the hieroglyphics of the Book of Dead. Essentially, the Egyptians created a giant grid and used Venus (just as the Mayans did) as the starting point for placing sacred structures. That same grid (scaled down for writing) was used for the Book of the Dead. Could that same grid have been used for the placement of Geoglyphs? The enigmatic Palpa lines in Peru are not as famous as the Nazca lines, but these puzzling lines and geoglyphs that can only be properly viewed from the air are equally interesting.Archaeological examinations reveal the Palpa lines are older than the Nazca lines and were most likely created by the Paracas culture, an Andean society that existed about 800 BCE and 100 BCE, in what today is the Ica Region of Peru.The Palpa lines are located in between the towns of Sacramento, Pinchango, and Llipata. The purpose of the lines and geoglyphs is unknown. There are as many as 600 geoglyphs of giant size and they represent a series of human and animal zoomorphic figures, including the Familia Real (Royal Family), a group of eight figures on a hillside.The purpose of the Palpa lines and geoglyphs is unknown and just like the Nazca lines, these ancient carvings are regarded as one of archaeology's greatest enigmas because of their quantity, nature, size and continuity. Scientists suggest the geoglyphs had ritual astronomical functions.These giant geoglyphs and lines must have been of great importance to our ancestors and they were undoubtedly not easy to create. Many consider the figures to be extraordinary example of the traditional and millenary magical-religious world of the ancient Pre-Hispanic societies which flourished in Peru.

Old Machines for New Music | Symposium Sat, 12/01/2012 Although Sonology in Utrecht was very early when it came to the use of computers for sound synthesis, analogue production techniques still remained an important subject after the first PDP-15 computer had arrived by the end of 1970. Equipment for voltage control was further developed at Sonology’s electronics workshop, and when the institute in Utrecht closed its doors in 1986, it still had three analogue studios. After Sonology had moved to the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, the best pieces of equipment of these three studios were combined and installed in one new analogue studio. At the same time, digital techniques became more and more prominent with the arrival of the personal computer. When in 1993, I was asked to take over Jaap Vink’s position as teacher in analogue studio techniques, it was questioned whether it was necessary at all to have such a studio. I personally was convinced that an analogue studio could make an important contribution to the curriculum, but then still, the question was if analogue techniques were only relevant because they are part of the historical development of electronic music, or if the methods applied in an analogue studio might still be relevant at a time when digital techniques were taking over. After having studied Gottfried Michael Koenig’s methods for the production of his Terminus (1962) and the Funktionen series (1967-1969) and the realization of a series of new pieces with voltage control techniques myself (Depths of Field 1-4 and Geoglyphs), my answer is yes! Kees Tazelaar (July 27, 1962) was taught at the Institute of Sonology from 1981 to 1983 (Utrecht) and from 1987 to 1989 (The Hague). He subsequently studied composition with Jan Boerman at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, graduating in 1993. Since then Tazelaar has been teaching at the Institute of Sonology. He is head of Sonology since June 2006. In addition to his own autonomous works, he has contributed to music theatre projects by Dick Raaijmakers (Die glückliche Hand geöffnet, Scheuer im Haag) and Theatergroep Hollandia (Perzen, Varkensstal). Tazelaar has also been intensively engaged in the restoration and reconstruction of major electronic works from the past. In his specially equipped studio, he has created new versions of compositions by Gottfried Michael Koenig , Jan Boerman, Edgard Varèse, Iannis Xenakis, György Ligeti, Luctor Ponse and Dick Raaijmakers. During the winter semester of 2005/2006, Kees Tazelaar filled the Edgard Varèse Guest Professorship of the DAAD at the Technische Universität Berlin.
