Set Yourself Free, Dreaming of the Future - Lea Misan As an International, I felt lost in a new culture, again and again, as one who doesn't fit in, isolated from friends and loved ones back in my home country. I wanted to feel accepted and at home. I hid in a corner and waited for permission to invite me in for others to initiate. I busied myself doing other people's bidding. I deferred to the needs and wants of others and pleased others at my own expense. I froze at the slightest whiff of conflict. I blanked out each time someone else chose to ‘define' me. I was accused of not doing enough and not having a backbone of my own. To shape the life I wished to live, I knew I had to do something. It took me years to crack out from beneath the frozenness I felt and then to start identifying what was taking my power and draining my energy. I was able to interrupt old patterns and change the dynamics of power that held me captive. And I started to gain my freedom and take charge of my own life. My organization provides coaching, psychotherapy, and group work to Internationals, Expats, and Global Nomads in particular, but also many people. Lea Misan is an accomplished consultant in systemic psychotherapy and process-oriented psychology who is passionate and dedicated to helping people involved in conflict, abuse, trauma, and leadership. She is also a Facilitator, Trainer, Coach, Founder, and Director of the mental health charity, Act for Change. GO BE GREAT! WITH COACH KARENA PODCAST Ready to be a guest on the show? In today's episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Andrew Hallam, a financial expert and author of many books of which “The Millionnaire expat”is at the center of our conversation.Yet, you don't have to be an expat, nor a millionaire to benefit from listening to this podcast, from which you'll learn, as a starter, that some of the most reputable insurance companies in the world sell retirement plans that will leave you broke. Andrew will tell you who they are, and what you can do to avoid those traps. You'll also learn that in order to grow your capital over time, you won't need a complex and time-consuming investment plan.He spends on average 1 hour per year to balance his portfolio of low-cost index fund s and as a result he beat most actively managed funds, that come with astronomic fees.We also touched on the current status of the global markets, and Andrew's perspective is refreshing and somehow reassuring. There is a lot to learn and enjoy here…..Have a listenMILLIONAIRE EXPATBuild your strongest-ever portfolio from anywhere in the worldNow in its third edition, Millionaire Expat is the world's most trusted, bestselling guide for expat investors. It shows readers how to protect themselves from financial sharks and build effective portfolios that maximize profits and tax efficiency. This updated guide includes model portfolios of ETFs or index funds. It recommends subtle differences for investors based on nationality, while explaining why all-in-one portfolio funds are even simpler and more profitable than individual ETFs. Millionaire Expat also provides investment models for socially responsible funds.Best of all, this book is specific. Author Andrew Hallam doesn't just offer theory. He shows you exactly what to buy and where to buy it from. He explains how much you should sell each year, upon retirement, and discusses repatriation: showing how different countries deal with the taxation of portfolios that were built abroad. And if you're looking for a hands-free approach, Millionaire Expat offers something for you as well: lists of roboadvisors and full-service financial firms that offer guidance and build portfolios of ETFs and index funds. But what if you started investing late and can't afford to retire? In that case, Andrew Hallam has you covered. He profiles several low-cost countries that are popular with expats. He explains what countries are great for Global Nomads and for retirees looking for tax breaks, safety, solid health care systems and a low-cost, enjoyable standard of living.Millionaire Expat (3rd edition) is an entertaining guide, showing readers how to maximize their money and their life satisfaction based on simple, smart investing and their choice of retirement destination.Author Andrew Hallam was a high school teacher who built a million-dollar portfolio―on a teacher's salary. He knows how everyday people can achieve success in the market. In Millionaire Expat, he tailors his best advice to the unique needs of those living overseas to give you the targeted, real-world guidance you need.SHOW LESS

It's hard to leave a life you love behind. But Global Nomads like Caroline Giffon often do — far behind. In her expat life, Caroline has moved 17 times, 8 of them international moves. The expat life seems so glamorous, with new adventures awaiting each transition. But it's also so challenging to uproot your life — even your identity — every few years. It can even be a very real source of grief. To help other Global Nomads, Caroline founded Girafe Coaching, where she teaches expats how to live a life they'll love.
Countering the traditional narrative of "migration as crisis," Global Nomads tells the story of a group of people for whom migration is not a symptom of a disordered world, but rather an ordinary practice full of social and personal meaning. Decentering migration from North America and Europe, this ethnography explores how ethnic Fulbe people in the West African Republic of Guinea migrate abroad to seek their fortunes and fulfill their responsibilities--and in the process, securing a place at home. Based on twenty-three months of ethnographic research, Global Nomads: An Ethnography of Migration, Islam, and Politics in West Africa (Oxford UP, 2020) investigates how mobility abroad shapes belonging at home and shows that political and economic motivations to migrate are important in Guinea, as elsewhere--but they are only part of the story. Family and community expectations, cultural ideals of work, notions of gender, and religious piety all come into play when people dream of going abroad and when they contemplate coming home again. Ultimately, Global Nomads shows how understandings of the past and its connections to the present--of what being a respectable person entails, of individual responsibilities to a larger community--all shape how people live in contexts of insecurity. On this mini episode Dr Heidi Forbes Öste streams live from the Barcelona airport on being a digital global nomad, the future of Evolving Digital Self and upcoming projects. Overview of Digital Wellbeing as it is covered on Evolving Digital Self for 2BalanceU. There are four areas of Digital Wellbeing that are interconnected. First of all, there's the individual and that's the most important part because the individual is part of all of the other pieces. In this we look at the human relationship with technology and how we're engaging with it, improving our behaviors around it, and also identifying sensitivities and areas where toxicities related to technology in our engagement with it can be improved, neutralized and/or harmonized so that we can be more effective, happy, connected, and human. The second piece is where organizations are made up of those individuals and people and identifying how organizations are creating cultures that support positive digital wellbeing, positive relationships with technology and how you can support wellbeing in general in the way that we engage with technology. Everything from how we sit when we're engaging with our devices, to the devices themselves. The other pieces that a lot of those organizations are developing really cool technologies. But we need to be mindful in the development of those technologies on how they are impacting the human experience. Are we taking wellbeing considerations into account when we're creating design? Are we taking integration into account when we are designing things for the future? How do they impact the human experience? Again, it comes back to that individual. The final piece is really the important part of understanding where policy is going and how we can future proof our organizations and ourselves. So we're protecting our privacy, we're protecting our wellbeing and we're not creating toxic environments, um, for individuals as we go forward. There's a lot of concerns about everything from EMF and 5G's. And I think it's just for us to take those things into consideration because there, there are new laws that are coming into place and there should be, but understanding where those are going and how they may impact us and also how we can influence those future regulations and policies so that they have a positive outcome for everyone. So what I've been working on recently, and will be sharing a lot about this journey, is we are creating a physical space in France designed in very mindful way to integrate the principles of digital wellbeing. One can experience being connected but not having it be in a harmful way. The intent is also to be able to capture some really good data about the impact on productivity, on happiness, on a physical and mental wellbeing. All of these different metrics are so important us to understand on a global scale what is the impact of what we're creating and how we're integrating it into our experiences. We’ll be launching a new show called Global Nomad Hacks. I will be giving you more details as we get closer to the launch. Do you have a suggestion of someone that should be interviewed on either Evolving Digital Self regarding digital wellbeing or Global Nomad Hacks (thriving tips for on living abroad or on the road) or a product/service that should be highlighted? Where do you call home? In this episode, we speak to Alice Wu, an intercultural consultant at Cornell University. Alice is the creator of a series of films about Global Nomads and Third Culture Kids: people who have spent their developmental years living in multiple countries, building relationships to many cultures “while not having full ownership in any” (David Pollock). Alice discusses the challenges and benefits of growing up this way, and what people of transcultural backgrounds have to offer our increasingly interconnected world. Alice’s films are available at https://sales.lrc.cornell.edu/collections/intercultural-materials “Global Nomads in the Age of Technology is a fascinating series of interviews with today’s university students who come from a wide range of internationally mobile childhood experiences. It not only showcases the increasing cultural complexity of those called Global Nomads/Third Culture Kids, but also helps us answer the question: “Has technology changed the GN/TCK experience?” It is intriguing to hear fresh insights into how they perceive and use the wealth of their individual stories.I highly recommend this for all who want to know more about how it is for today’s youth who are growing up among many different cultures.”– Ruth E Van Reken, co-author, Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Among Worlds, 3rd edition
Today’s Mindful Expat Guest is Lois Bushong! Lois is a licensed marriage and family therapist living in the state of Indiana in the United States. She is originally from the US, but grew up in Central America (mainly in Honduras) as part of a missionary family, and she also spent 10 years working in Honduras as an adult. Having grown up as a Third Culture Kid (or TCK) herself, Lois has specialized in working with TCKs, adult TCKs, and intercultural couples. Lois is also the author of the book, Belonging Everywhere and Nowhere: Insights into Counseling the Globally Mobile, which is how I first came across her work. In addition to her therapy practice, she also offers services as a consultant and coach for TCKs and others navigating this intercultural space. What you’ll hear in this episode: • About Lois' experiences growing up as a TCK missionary kid in Central America and how she came to want to help other TCKs find their true sense of belonging. • How frequent moves can lead some TCKs to experience unresolved grief, which can lead to some difficulties as they get older. • How parents and other adults can help TCKs make room for both positive and negative emotional reactions to their experiences growing up abroad and allow them to work through and process grief. • How many TCKs find their true sense of belonging with other TCKs. Resources mentioned in this episode: • To learn more about TCKs, check out episode 8 for my conversation with Josh Sandoz (who we mention in the podcast). • Lois mentioned a number of great resource books: • Emotional Resilience and the Expat Child: Practical Storytelling Techniques That Will Strengthen the Global Family, by Julia Simens • The new edition of Ruth Van Reken & David Pollock's book, Third Culture Kids 3rd Edition: Growing Up Among Worlds. • Writing Out of Limbo: International Childhoods, Global Nomads and Third Culture Kids, edited by by Gene Bell-Villada, Nina Sichel, Faith Eidse, and Elaine Neil Orr. • Pico Iyer's book, The Global Soul: Jet Lag, Shopping Malls, and the Search for Home (and his TED Talk entitled, "Where Is Home?"). • We also briefly mentioned Lois's blog post, "TCKs Make Great Therapists." More about Lois and how to follow up with her: To learn more about Lois' work as a counselor, coach, speaker, and writer, you can visit her website www.loisbushong.com. To read some of her blog articles, you can also visit her blog, mangotreereflections.com (the contents of which will be transferred over to her main website in the next few months). Lois' book, Belonging Everywhere and Nowhere: Insights into Counseling the Globally Mobile, is a fantastic resource especially for therapists and counselors, but really for anyone working with TCKs. To learn more about the book, you can also visit this page of her website. You can also find Lois on Twitter, and you can email by going to this page of her website. Stay in Touch! In this Best of Series, I will share with you extracts from the first season's episodes. Each series is dedicated to a specific topic. In this series we focus on topics related to being a Global Nomad, like adapting to new cultures, building a sense of home when moving regularly from a country to another or dealing with some of the challenges that go with it. Virtual reality a technology of potential. So much potential, in fact, that in many ways it seems to be only potential. We’ve all seen pictures of rapt viewers in Oculus headsets or Google cardboard, but widespread distribution is still a distant prospect. In many cases, it's not clear why a teacher would use virtual reality in the classroom even if it seems like a fun addition. So today, we talked to a person using VR with a great deal of thought. Global Nomads is a nonprofit that facilitates virtual exchanges between students in the US and other countries, and it's about to launch a new VR initiative where students can digitally relocate. Grace Lau, the nonprofit's director of virtual reality, believes, as many do, in the power of VR to create empathy. Also, if you haven’t taken our survey (https://bit.ly/edsurgeonair) yet, we’d love it if you would.
Tayo is a TCK on a mission! Tayo was raised in Sweden, Burkina Faso, Nigeria (where he comes from), Vietnam and the United States. As he recognized the need to bring awareness and inspiration to the growing TCK and Global Nomad community, Tayo hosts the show as UYD Media (http://www.uydmedia.com/) . UYD Media is a youth media and a digital content platform made by and for TCKs, Global Nomads and Millennials. Its purpose is to inform, inspire, entertain, and celebrate those who are “using their difference to make a difference” in today’s globally interconnected world. Tayo shares with you here in a very intimate way his experience as a TCK, what each country has brought to his rich identity, the challenges that he has been through and how he managed to deal with them and make them become his biggest strengths. He will tell you about his three principals, 3 connectors, that allow him to integrate anywhere. Tayo also shares with you how his parents supported him in his journey and who were the other influencers who helped him thrive during his childhood as a TCK. Tayo has a really fascinating podcast show where he invites TCKs, nomads and entrepreneurs to share their experience, a podcast show with stories of global leaders.
