The final course is served in our Delicious in Dungeon x Toriko combo series. After leaving the Golden Country, Laios and his friends are attacked by a griffin. This perilous encounter gives us some insight into Senshi's past and motivations. The party is slowed down again when changeling mushrooms mix things up, forcing them to think quickly and adapt. As the party descends deeper, outside forces join the fray and the dungeon's ecology becomes ever-more unstable. (But don't worry, there's still time for a quick bite.) Back in Toriko, the titular Gourmet Hunter and Coco face-off against a deadly Devil Python. Both are forced to push themselves to the limit to overcome this sinister serpent and find the coveted Puffer Whale. However, as their flavorful adventure continues, an even stronger foe is skulking around in the depths. Remember to sharpen your cutlery, roll some dumplings, and avoid unfamiliar mushrooms for today's golden-fried episode of Anime Was (Not) A Mistake! In what's already being hailed as our best episode yet (by us), we dive into another combo platter of Delicious in Dungeon and Toriko. First, Laios and his friends arrive at the dungeon's Sixth Level. After dealing with some uncanny shapeshifters, the party gains a new member in the form of the beastman ninja Izutsumi. A supernatural detour then brings the party to the legendary Golden Country, a paradise within the dungeon that remains frozen in time. There, a surprising revelation leads Laios to question his destiny. Back on the surface, Kabru discusses similarly existential matters with the Canaries, a group of elven dungeon specialists known for leaving destruction in their wake. Next, in Toriko, our heroes have to get past a troop of dangerous Troll Kongs to reach the extra-flavorful fruit they guard. Finally, Toriko and Komatsu team up with another member of the Four Heavenly Kings to find the rare Puffer Whale. Please remember to check under your pillow for nightmare clams and enjoy a giant wheel of cheese for today's well-mellowed episode of Anime Was (Not) A Mistake! Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation
Dogs are Smarter Than PeopleThere's an old NPR article about writing bestsellers that quotes critic Ruth Franklin's overview of American best-sellers as saying "No possible generalization can be made regarding the 1,150 books that have appeared in the top 10 of the fiction best-seller list since its inception."In his book Hit Lit, which we've been talking about, James W. Hall disagrees, talking about 12 elements that he thinks really make those super-popular-multi-million-copy bestsellers in American fiction in the past 100 years or so.We've been talking about that a lot. Hall analyzed Gone With the Wind, Peyton Place, To Kill a Mockingbird, Valley of the Dolls, The Godfather, The Exorcist, Jaws, The Dead Zone, The Hunt for Red October, The Firm, The Bridges of Madison County and The Da Vinci Code. And I just wanted to have a moment to regroup because I found an old interview with Hall and Marc Schultz on Publisher's Weeklywhere he talks about what element he found in those 12 top selling books that surprised him.He says, “One I didn't expect to find is something we came to call the Golden Country, which is a phrase from Orwell's 1984. Winston, the protagonist, trapped in this dull empty world, has created in his imagination this edenic, natural, beautiful landscape called the Golden Country. It's his ideal world. And not just in these 12 books, but in all the bestsellers we looked at, there is always an image of a place or a time that's this idealized, edenic, natural landscape that serves a reference point for much of the story.”We've talked a bit about that in the last week. There's this idealized want of an idealized world or time that we long for, right? And the characters in our books long for it, too.In that same interview, Hall says, “But the ingredients themselves remain the same, as Americans we're really reading, and have wanted to read, permutations of the same book for the last 100 years, and probably into the foreseeable future.”And it doesn't have to necessarily be awesome writing for us Americans to want to read these books.“Grace Metalious, author of Peyton Place, once cracked, "If I'm a lousy writer, then a hell of a lot of people have got lousy taste.'” Sarah Weinman writes, “What Metalious and her kin in best-sellerdom really possess, as Hall explains so well in Hit Lit, is the power to connect with readers through their hearts and guts as much as, if not more than, their minds.”It's about your heart, humans. About your heart.DOG TIP FOR LIFEAs we learned from the raccoons, don't be aggressive if you don't get your food or else they call the sheriff on you.RANDOM THOUGHT LINK ALL ABOUT A WOMAN CORNERED BY 100 RACCOONS. With a definition as wide as the Montana sky and featuring tales as tall as Kentucky bluegrass, Country music is as American as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Over the past several years, Keith has dipped his toe in the proverbial water of those stylings we reckon as Country music. Tim Watts MP has a deeply personal reason for wanting to resurface stories about Chinese migrants to Australia. From pre-Federation, to the Kelly gang, to the Melbourne Olympics, he tells how their influence weaves right through our culture
Australia is a successful multicultural society with monocultural institutions and symbols. Tim Watts' family personifies this contradiction. He joins Toby Halligan to discuss his new book which investigates why Australia's imagined community is so far behind its lived community and what can be done.
Tim Watts is Labor member for the Victorian seat of Gellibrand, one of the most diverse electorates in Australia. His own family is a microcosm of diversity - Watts comes from a long line of Australians with ancestors deeply rooted in the old attitudes of "white Australia", while his wife is from Hong Kong, and his children Eurasian-Australian. In his new book, The Golden Country, Watts reconciles the past and present in his family, as well as examining immigration, race and national identity in modern Australia. In this podcast with Michelle Grattan he also explores the "bamboo ceiling" in our politics, business and other areas, and talks about his efforts to encourage Asian-Australians to climb the ranks in Labor, which presently has ALP Senate leader Penny Wong as the only Asian-Australian face among its federal MPs. Join Nancy J. Reid and Lisa D. Smith, the mother-daughter travel team and publishers of Big Blend Radio & TV Magazine and Parks & Travel Magazine, for Big Blend Radio’s Vacation Statiom Show with travel writer Debbie Stone who shares her Temple Hopping Adventures in Bagan, Myanmar with Journeys Within, A Wild Frontiers Company. Bagan is the sacred mecca of Myanmar. In this “Golden Country,” long shrouded in myth and legend, pilgrims come to the “sea of temples,” prostrating themselves before towering images of the Buddha. They offer donations and whisper mantras, while saffron-robed monks recite prayers in hypnotic monotonal chants. Religious fervor and sense of spirituality permeates Bagan. And no wonder, as it is home to the largest collection of Buddhist structures in the world, more than 2,200 in number. Originally the capital of the Kingdom of Pagan, the site once contained up to 10,000 temples, with many built between the 11th and 13th centuries. The kingdom was the first to unify the regions that would later comprise modern Myanmar, and helped to establish Burmese culture and ethnicity. It also embraced Theravada Buddhism with a zeal that is still very apparent across the country today. Read Debbie's Bagan Story on BlendRadioandTV.com. Featured music is “Mantra” by Wally Lawder.
