Last week, the Supreme Court of the United States rejected Florida's plea to counter an order blocking a recent law barring minors from attending drag shows. Despite Florida's request for intervention coming as early as October, a significant grid of the high court upheld the decision to leave the order uninterrupted. This entire controversy began with Hamburger Mary's, a well-liked restaurant chain in Florida, taking legal action against the state last summer. Their contention was that the newly instituted 'Florida's Protection of Children Act' had an overreaching scope and impinged upon the First Amendment's guarantee of free speech. The aforementioned Protective Act, sanctioned by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in May, presented a foundational shift in the way the state's youth could interact with 'adult performances.' Precluding any knowing admission of a child to events of this nature became the law of the land in Florida. An interesting perspective that arises from this saga is the political angle: how do we interpret adult performances which, according to Governor DeSantis, tend to sexualize young children? Drawn into the controversy is the broad definition of the 'Protection of Children Act', which has implications for both the present and future legislations.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Orlando Restaurant Hamburger Marys files federal lawsuit against Gov Ron DeSantis and the state of Florida. WTAF is there NOT to talk about with Ron DeSantis? Florida restaurant, Hamburger Mary's, which features drag performances, files federal lawsuit against the state and Gov. DeSantis' over drag ban, claiming this new legislation has hurt their business significantly and targeted the LGBTQ community. "DeSantis targets LGBTQ, drag performers:Four new Florida laws target transgender, broader LGBTQ community. Here's what they do: Republican supporters say the new laws restrict gender-affirming care for kids and adults, require people to use bathrooms that align with their sex assigned at birth, ban kids from attending “adult live performances," block the use of preferred pronouns and expand Florida's Parents Right law, derided by critics as the "Don't Say Gay" law." "Orlando co-owners Mike Carpenter and John Paonessa share in their lawsuit that they were forced to cancel a Sunday series of family-friendly performances and that families have already stopped coming to the restaurant, citing a 20% drop in reservations. The lawsuit also mentions the law is too vague and limits free speech." USA Today In a Facebook post, the owners further elaborate they feel this bill has nothing to do with children and "everything to do with the continued oppression of the LGBTQ+ community." The legislation in question is Florida's SB 1438, which prohibits children from attending “adult live performances." The bill, introduced by Sen. Clay Yarborough in April, doesn't explicitly call out drag shows or Pride parades in the text. Instead, it focuses on defining content related to sexuality that might be included in such events or “any show, exhibition, or other presentation that ... depicts or simulates nudity, sexual conduct, sexual excitement, specific sexual activities, … lewd conduct, or the lewd exposure of prosthetic or imitation genitals or breasts.” USA Today However... TALLAHASSEE — The Florida Senate has an answer for local governments that want to regulate businesses: Go ahead, but it's going to cost you. A bill that will allow businesses to sue for damages if a local ordinance or voter-approved referendum costs their business 15 percent or more of their profits. So now, more of your taxpayer dollars will funnel into the local and/or state defense funds to pay for lawsuits that the Governor has essentially brought on himself. ** Music Tracks for the Podcast by Alex Grohl on Pixabay ** Feel free to LIKE, SHARE AND COMMENT. Today was the last day of hosting author, Jessica Speart, who is most well known for her Rachel Porter mystery series. She wrote 10 books in the series, since the mid 1980s and her character plays a USFWS agent. Jessica also wrote the non fiction book, Winged Obsession about the dark butterfly trade. Experience has shown her that she can reach a much broader audience under the guise of fiction, so her next book, about the trade in exotic cats, will use Rachel Porter as the vehicle to reach as many people as possible with the true issues that face wild cats. She is a long time friend of Bill and Kiz' and came for a week of research into the issues and to get ideas from seeing the Tampa bay area, where she plans to set the stage. While here we visited Hamburger Mary's in Ybor (as Rachel Porter's best friend is a drag queen), a monastery on the Palm River, Tarpon Springs sponge docks, Carnie Town in Gibsonton, downtown Tampa, the Plant Museum, dinner at Jasmine Thai and all the little towns in between. On her own she visited Dade City's Wild Things and took a four hour boat ride down the Silver River. Some ideas we gave her for the thriller included ways a cat could escape, ways the controlled drugs could end up being used for mis intended purposes, and places like the Bone Museum in OKC where tigers can end up illegally. Jessica kept saying how much I was like her character; smart, wickedly sarcastic sense of humor and determined. Guess I'll have to read the books. Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views. These are my views and opinions. If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story. The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/ I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story. In this episode, we chat with our GED Drag Centerfold of the Month, Allusia! Allusia emerged onto the drag scene in the Pacific Northwest 21 years ago in punk rock hair and political statements. Inspired by artists that marched to the beat of their own drums like Cyndi Lauper and Nina Hagen, as well as savagery of the animal kingdom, Allusia always strove to unapologetically carve out her own unique spot in the ecosystem of art. With lyrics inspired by prehistoric desires and looks divined from esoteric fever dreams, she crashed into the scene like a bull into a china shop. Her first drag performance was a fundraiser for Stonewall Youth, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing resources and a place of belonging for queer youth. From there she went on to perform in various drag shows, house parties, and seedy garage rock shows as well as becoming part of local grassroots political movements. At 19, she became the youngest ever co-chair of Olympia Gay Pride and has ever since strived to make the world a better place for the queer community. At 25, Allusia packed a U-Haul and moved to Los Angeles with no plan, no money, and no clue. Wasting no time, she quickly became a staple in the West Hollywood party scene with residencies at Here Lounge, Micky's, The Abbey, Hamburger Mary's, The Factory, and more. She has appeared on stage with Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, and a slew of others that she can't remember due to various blackouts. Fueled by the delights of being a nightlife socialite, she became a video ho in countless music videos and made saucy drag appearances in movies and television shows such as AJ And The Queen, Bones, Glow, Dorothy, and We Are Your Friends as well as casting and starring in cult drag favorite Cherry Pop. After a six-year break from making music, Allusia rode back on a sex-fueled do whatever you want and fuck the consequences party single called “Psycho Pony.” Her EP project Animal Nature remains true to her riotous roots while including a glossy pumped-up new feel. We chat with Allusia about the evolution of drag culture, fighting depression during COVID, coming out, how West Hollywood has changed the most, being true to yourself, local vs celebrity drag queens, how the LGBTQ community can support other minority groups, the beauty of Weho nightlife, and more…with host Alexander Rodriguez.

Some might say the fundamentals of drag are impeccable styling, a flair for the dramatic and knowing how to act like a bossy bitch. We see these talents embodied in the greatest drag queens of our time (cough, cough, Gigi Goode), but as our ever-astute recurring guest Generation creator Zelda Barnz points out: if she had been raised with different circumstances, Megan would have loved drag. Are Bethany and I on bad terms? I had to learn three words yesterday. Floyd's medication has been recalled. And an update on his Hamburger Mary's gig in Michigan. Scooby the camel was out and loose again yesterday. He's a regular and he does this for all the female servers. He probably shouldn't. A big, provocative question and we'll all have different answers: What does the flag mean to you? Bethany had a pregnancy/health scare last weekend.
Dita Von is a drag queen who performs throughout Milwaukee and at Hamburger Mary's. He is also an advocate for the LGTBQ community.
Lizzy expresses concern over the lack of response to her chain letter. She then chats with one of her favorite people- hilarious comedian and star of the new show Nikki Fre$h...the devastatingly lovely and talented Jared Goldstein. Together they unabashedly delve into Hamburger Mary's, hair follicles, fat markers, and filling the well. And then you guessed it, they careen straight into secret drawers, secret doors, and strange therapists. This one will moisturize your soul, or my name isn't Leslie Copperstein.NOTE: This episode was recorded before the death of George Floyd, this week’s protests & all other subsequent events. Love to all. #blacklivesmatter
We recently saw Coco Peru’s sold out performance here in Chicago at Hamburger Mary’s and we can’t stop talking about how wonderful it is, but, unlike one exuberant fan who got tossed out of the audience, we waited until the show was over to express our feelings.Coco Peru’s new one drag queen show touches on some intense issues- living with regret, isolation, social media and aging. Amazingly, she always finds the humor in some pretty tough topics.Today Coco Peru joins us from her home in Los Angeles to talk about surviving these tough times we are living in.COCO PERU: https://www.misscocoperu.com➤ Coco Peru’s memorable appearance on the original Will & Grace and the show’s return to television.➤ Why it’s a good idea to stop and think a moment before sharing something on the Internet.➤ The magic of exploring the clown inside you.Originally posted as "FOF #2535 – Coco Peru Has a Strong Backbone" on Oct 5, 2017.

Landon Patterson gives us a very real account of what it was like growing up and not quite fitting within society's labels. She shares how she was different from other kids and what it was like navigating middle and high school while transitioning from teenage boy to teenage girl. After winning homecoming queen her senior year of high school, Landon was thrust into the public spotlight and became an advocate for the trans community. She tells us what it was like having the Westboro Baptist Church protestors come to her school because of her notoriety, and how she received the support of her coaches and cheerleading squad during this time. Landon tells it like it is, and was so open and honest with us on the mistakes people make with respect to her community, usually out of ignorance. She stresses the importance of using the correct pronouns and not asking inappropriate questions. We also touch on how she started her showgirl career at Hamburger Mary’s and what it’s like dating as a trans woman. Landon is so genuine, good-hearted and hilarious. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did!

My guest this week grew up surrounded by mysteries and clues, but of course he carried a few secrets of his own. Not just that he was gay, but also that his tastes didn't quite match those of his friends. It took a long time for Jorge to accept that it's OK to love the things you love, and in fact doing so means that you can finally find others who share your passions. It was a physical response to seeing Meryl Streep sing that finally convinced him that it was time to make some changes in his life. We'll have that conversation in a minute. First a big thanks to everyone who makes the Sewers of Paris possible with a pledge of support on Patreon! Head over to SewersOfParis.com and click “support the show on Patreon” to join the folks who make the podcast possible, and to check out the rewards for backers. And just a reminder that The Sewers of Paris is on Twitter and Facebook — I post clips of the stuff that we talk about on each episode, so you can follow the show on social media to get a look at the stuff that guests recommend. Also BTW I'm in Chicago right now with my comedy storytelling show Queens of Adventure, featuring drag queens playing Dungeons & Dragons. We just did our first live show at Hamburger Mary's Attic and it was a huge blast — thanks to everyone who came out! The the second is coming up on October 16th starring Seattle legends Arson Nicki, Butylene O'Kipple, and Fraya Love. And then I'll be in Minneapolis for two big events — I'll be a guest of honor at Gaylaxicon, a queer sci-fi and fantasy convention. We're doing a Queens of Adventure show there on October 19 with Utica Queen, Nocturna Lee Mission, and The Other Jeannie Retelle. And then on October 23 we're doing another Queens of Adventure show in Minneapolis, this time at Lush with Utica, Jeanne, and Kamaree Williams.
On Episode #17 of “CAN YOU HEAR ME, LONG BEACH? "Arts" can be a pretty daunting, dandy world, rife with black ties and velvet ropes. At the beginning of this, National Arts Month, we spoke with two groups looking to make their particular corner of the art world more accessible, more understandable and more fun. Long Beach Opera is hosting a Divalicious Drag-Off on Sunday at Hamburger Mary’s. Opera singers will be paired with drag queens to perform as teams: the Opera Diva will first perform an aria, followed by a lip-synced number by the Drag Queen (think “Un Bel Di” followed by “I Will Survive”) to be judged on originality and fabulosity. We spoke with LBO's executive director Jennifer Rivera and singer Joanna Ceja about the show. We asked Rivera how the search for a new artistic director is going. We asked Ceja to sing. They both obliged. Next, artist inhabit a sometimes mysterious world of creation and cleaning supplies. To wipe away a bit of the mystery, encourage a dialogue with the public, not to mention a chance to spend some art dollars in town, the Arts Council of Long Beach has put together Open Studio Tours. The Council's Tina Burnight spoke with us about this four-weekend event Oct. 5 – Oct. 27 that features artists all over Long Beach opening their art studios to the public; some studios are inside the artists’ homes (so it’s kind of like a home and garden tour!), some are in their garages, some are co-ops with several artists sharing space. It’s really a great way to see, in person, what local artists constantly chirp about, that there are just so many of them that call Long Beach home, and so few spaces (galleries) for them to show. The tour starts this Saturday and Sunday in the Zaferia/Eastside area with eight different destinations for tour-goers to check out. And, support your local artist!
My guest this week is Cam Clarke, who grew up in a showbiz family that's been entertaining audiences since the early 30s. If you're not familiar with his work as one of the the youngest members of the King Family Singers, you might know him as the voice of Leonardo on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or as Kaneda from Akira, or as Liquid Snake in Metal Gear. He's been the voice of He-Man, Simba, Jen from the Dark Crystal, and hundreds of other roles. Cam's always had a gift for voices and song — and not just with the SOUND of his voice, but with the words he's found to express who he truly is.Cam was kind enough to invite me to his home for this interview, where we talked about growing up in a Mormon showbiz family, struggling to come out and find his place in the world, and why he he has a gorgeous collection of Barbie dolls. And a big thanks to everyone who makes the Sewers of Paris possible with a pledge of support on Patreon! My guest this week has traveled the world to create images of the varied lives human lead — including the sexy secrets hiding in their erotic imaginations. Justin Hall is the creator of numerous comics and graphic novels, and I was lucky enough to catch him while he was reachable at home rather than voyaging from country to country with just some paper and ink. He shared stories of finding freedom and himself in an itinerant life, living on the road in tents and squats before they were demolished, being turned into a quivering mess by a comic book that changed his life, and why if he ever gets malaria — again — he hopes it'll be in Tanzania. And a big thanks to everyone who makes the Sewers of Paris possible with a pledge of support on Patreon! Where do you find the nerve to stand up for yourself? My guest this week is Brian Moreno, who discovered a big wide world of gay culture in his conservative town. By day he was a shy nerd, by night a nightlife photographer documenting wild queer parties — at one point helping to throw a gathering that, to his shock, drew twelve hundred guests. These days he's set that life aside, but he still uses the confidence he found at those parties to remind himself that he's capable of so much more than he thought. And I hope you'll join me for a laid back livestream chit-chat on Saturday September 21 at 10am pacific! I'll be hanging out on YouTube to talk with you about the book and movies and music and shows that you're loving right now.
