Episode 214:For today's guest episode I was pleased to get the chance to talk to Rob Eastaway, author of a book all about Shakespeare and his relationship to numbers and mathematics. Rob's book ‘Much Ado About Numbers' is a very entertaining read, whatever your level of understanding maths might be and quite an eye opener when considering how much maths permeates into Shakespeare's plays. This is not just about hard numbers and number crunching, but touches to the Elizabethan attitude towards descriptive scales, astrology, astronomy, music and optics. Rob does a great job in the book of condensing these very broad and often technical subjects into a book that is a mixture of popular science, mathematics, history and, of course, literature, so it was great to chat to Rob about just some of those concepts.Rob Eastaway is author of several bestselling books connecting maths with everyday life, including "Why do Buses Come in Threes?" and "How Many Socks Make a Pair?". His first book "What is a googly?", an introduction to cricket, was famously presented by British Prime Minister John Major to President Bush (snr) at Camp David in 1992, and was published in the USA under the title "Cricket Explained". With Mike Askew, he wrote "Maths for Mums & Dads", a book that helps parents to understand the new methods being used to teach maths, and offers ideas for how to make maths more engaging and fun at home. An American edition was published in 2010 entitled "Old Dogs, New Math". Rob appears regularly on radio in the UK and is a regular speaker. An activity that has taken him to the Usa and Australia. He was President of the Mathematical Association from 2007-8.Links to 'Much Ado About Numbers:Amazon UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Much-Ado-About-Numbers-Eastaway/dp/1805460293/ref=sr_1_1?Amazon US: https://www.amazon.com/Much-Ado-About-Numbers-Shakespeares/dp/B0CWD3SNXP/ref=sr_1_1?Support the podcast at:www.thehistoryofeuropeantheatre.comwww.patreon.com/thoetpwww.ko-fi.com/thoetp You can find an advertisement free version of the latest podcast episodes by joining on Patreon at the lowest paid tier level – that's for just £1 per month. Host Paul Greaves and co‑host Kunal Kamal talk with UNLV economist Andrew Woods about what diverging tourism indicators reveal about the real state of the Las Vegas economy.Las Vegas visitor counts are falling even as Strip gaming revenue hits records. Andrew Woods explains what these conflicting signals mean, why fewer visitors may be spending more, and how rising prices are reshaping demand. We dive into what's keeping visitation stuck near 39–40 million, which parts of the local economy respond first to tourism slowdowns, the warning indicators economists watch, the shortfall in international travel, and what the next reinvention of Las Vegas might require to push volumes back toward 42–43 million and beyond.

Nonprofit financial management has become one of the most important challenges facing nonprofit leaders today. Economic uncertainty, changing donor priorities, and shifting government funding have made financial strategy more critical than ever. In this episode of the Nonprofit MBA Podcast, Stephen Halasnik speaks with Nick Jain, co-founder of Eagle Rock CFO Services, about how nonprofit financial management can improve through stronger budgeting, better bookkeeping, operational discipline, and measurable outcomes. Below is a summary of their conversation, followed by the full podcast transcript. In an era of political shifts, economic whiplash, and tightening donor priorities, America's nonprofits find themselves navigating a new and unsettled terrain. For decades, the sector has been a quiet giant—employing roughly one in five American workers before 2025, powering food banks, religious institutions, arts organizations, veterans' groups, and thousands of other mission-driven enterprises. But what happens when funding priorities change? When donors redirect their giving? When government support ebbs in one region and expands in another? On a recent episode of the Nonprofit MBA Podcast, Stephen Halasnik, co-founder of Financing Solutions (a leading provider of nonprofit lines of credit), sat down with Nick Jain, co-founder of Eagle Rock CFO Services, to explore a question weighing heavily on nonprofit leaders: How can nonprofits manage their finances better—especially in uncertain times? Their conversation revealed something both sobering and hopeful. The nonprofit sector, Jane argues, is neither fragile nor immune to change. It is enduring—but only if leaders run it with discipline.

Chuck Heinz and Jamie Lent talk about Texas Tech football staff changes, The "New Box", holes in you shoes, three things that you are worried about for Tech Football, and the New Math.
Segment 1: • Holiness Isn't Passive: Sanctification isn't just about stopping sin—it's about starting new habits. • Ephesians 4:22: Put off sin, but don't stop there; put on holiness to become whole. • Practical Steps: If you're not spiritually strong, consume more of Christ by reading Scripture, worshiping, and focusing on Jesus. Segment 2: • New Math for Holiness: Ephesians 4:22-24 teaches a process: put off sin, put on righteousness. • Greg Gifford's Insight: True sanctification requires replacing sinful habits with godly actions. Segment 3: • The Scope of Anger: Anger affects 90% of counseling cases and damages relationships at home and work. • What Fuels Anger: Anger often stems from a “busted sense of judgment” and justifications for sinful reactions. • No Excuses: You can't blame your circumstances—anger reveals what's already in your heart. Segment 4: • Anger vs. Righteousness: Righteous anger focuses on God and His Kingdom, not personal preferences. • Root of Sinful Anger: Identify the idols fueling your anger by asking, “What do I want so much?” • God's Answer: Replace anger's idolatry with the peace of Jesus, who transforms hearts and homes. ___ Thanks for listening! Shakespeare lived in a period of exciting mathematical innovations, from arithmetic to astronomy, and from probability to music. Remarkably, many of those innovations are mentioned, or at least hinted at, in his plays. Rob Eastaway will explore the surprising ways in which mathematical ideas connect with Shakespeare and reveals that the playwright could be as creative with numbers as he was with words. Along the way you will discover surprising new mathematical insights on the Elizabethan world. This lecture was recorded by Rob Eastaway on 9th October 2024 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London.Rob Eastaway is best known as the author of several bestselling popular maths books, including Why Do Buses Come in Threes? and Maths On the Back of an Envelope. With Mike Askew, he wrote Maths for Mums & Dads, a book that helps parents to understand the new methods being used to teach maths. The American edition was published in 2010 entitled Old Dogs, New Math. Implementing strategies like low floor, high ceiling tasks and three-act tasks can engage students and promote problem-solving skills. Language and mindset play a crucial role in fostering confidence and growth in math. Understanding students' learning styles and providing individualized support is essential for their success. Register here for our free annual fall event we've created specifically for educators who are passionate about creating neurodiversity-affirming learning environments for students. The event will be held on Monday, September 23, and you can sign up to join Emily and a live panel of experts, who will be discussing ways to best support students of all neurotypes. Lindsay Kapek and Katie Tabari are experienced K-8 math educators with a passion for making math accessible to all students. They are accomplished leaders in education, leading school-wide professional development efforts, consulting with schools and school leaders regarding the implementation of skill-based instruction, and speaking nationwide at conferences including NWAIS as well as NCTM. Katie has extensive experience working with K-5 students, nearly all of whom were neurodivergent learners. She is also a mom to three kids, one of whom is neurodivergent. She is passionate about ensuring every student feels seen, heard, and included in the math classroom. Lindsay has extensive experience working with K-8 students who have been diagnosed with ADHD. Lindsay herself has ADHD and is a huge advocate for celebrating the incredible gifts that students with ADHD bring to the math classroom. Hey, we get it -- you don't like to think about math during the summer. If you're taking a class during the summer, it's probably not math-related, rather some elective. But unfortunately, the math is now going to be just as important in Division III football as it was in the BCS days in Division I. We know. That's not encouraging. And maybe we can't be encouraging about it, at least not the way it's currently set up, but we can sure as heck talk about it and try to explain about it. That's why we've brought back in our math correspondent, Logan Hansen of @loghanratings, to talk about what the new NPI -- the NCAA Power Index -- the new math -- means for the Division III football playoffs and selection format. We'll talk about how many years the NCAA folks tested this formula on, and we'll talk about how many they should have tested it on, and what Logan found when he went back further. We also talk with Delaware Valley football coach Mike Isgro, a former Aggie player under Duke Greco and assistant coach under Greco who now goes on to replace him. We talk about the long conference winning streak, where the opportunities for improvement are for the Aggies and more. And we also chat with Jessica Huntley, founding commissioner of the Atlantic East Conference. No, this isn't another conference looking to take an automatic bid, but something even more interesting to talk about -- the growth of women's flag football and how much growth we might expect to see at the Division III level in the near future. It's a great conversation about a way schools can look to help manage their enrollment as things get tight out there in higher education, and expand the country's most popular sport in a new venue and new format. Plus we take THREE mailbag questions, so make sure you stick around to hear them all, and talk about some of the latest coaching changes and conference shuffles.
