In dieser Folge nich nich nich begrüßen Abdelkarim und Lutz Birkner einen ganz besonderen Ehrengast: Eishockey-Veteran Kai Hospelt. „Hospi“ kam in seiner Karriere bei den Kölner Haien, den Grizzleys Wolfsburg, den Adlern Mannheim und den Krefelder Pinguinen auf 915 DEL-Erstligaspiele. Dazu kommen noch über 100 Länderspiele mit der deutschen Eishockeynationalmannschaft, darunter mehrere WM-Teilnahmen. 2012 wurde er „Spieler des Jahres“ in der Deutschen Eishockey Liga und 2015 feierte er den Meistertitel mit den Adlern aus Mannheim. Heute ist Kai Spielerberater, Eishockeyexperte bei Magenta TV und Edelfan von nich nich nich. The Macy Catheter was invented by Brad Macy, a veteran hospice nurse and recipient of 2013's National Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse of the Year Award. The inspiration for its invention came directly from a memorable patient interaction.Over the years, Brad has seen thousands of difficult symptom management cases while assisting patients and their families in the middle of the night. The most challenging cases were when the patient could not swallow medication and end-of-life symptoms were spiraling out of control.One night, Brad had a patient who was experiencing severe terminal agitation. The patient was suffering; he was shouting, he was climbing out of bed, and he was clearly very frightened. Brad got orders to administer a sedative that would help calm the patient. Since the patient was unable to swallow, the prescribed route of administration was per rectum. He administered the sedative in tablet form rectally as prescribed, and waited “that difficult wait” for the patient to calm while giving the patient's son emotional support. An hour later, the patient was worse. The desire of both the patient and his family were that he be able to die peacefully and at home. Brad called the doctor again for a repeated dose of sedative. While preparing to administer the second dose, he realized that the previous dose was still undissolved in the patient's rectum.Brad was left with a dilemma that is well-known by every experienced hospice nurse: how to help a patient who is experiencing severe symptoms and unable to swallow reach a state of comfort within the home setting.Motivated to reduce the severe agitation and suffering of his dying patient, Brad found a way to give the medication as a suspension that would absorb quickly in the patient's dry rectum. He crushed the tablet, added water, and administered the medication suspension into the rectum with a urinary catheter. The patient calmed down quickly and was sound asleep within thirty minutes. The patient's son was deeply grateful for an easy solution that controlled his father's symptoms with minimal subsequent discomfort or disruption. The patient died peacefully at home a few days later.Given the successful outcome of this case, Brad decided to create an optimized device to facilitate this intervention. He subsequently co-founded Hospi with the goal of making a commercial device available that could provide comfort and relief for patients and their loved ones on a much larger scale than would be possible as a lone practitioner.Hospi developed the Macy Catheter to improve the patient and caregiver experience with serious or terminal illness. The Macy Catheter is designed to maintain patient comfort and dignity while leveraging the speed and established benefits of rectal administration. The Macy Catheter is of particular relevance during end of life, as it can help patients remain comfortable in their home. It can also reduce the need for more costly and complex administration routes like intravenous delivery, which is seldom used in the hospice setting. Eran más de 600 los proyectos que optaban a hacerse con uno de los cheques valorados en 5000 euros de la iniciativa solidaria 'Contigo, 50 y más', con la que los laboratorios navarros Cinfa han querido celebrar su medio siglo de actividad. Entre junio y septiembre se han emitido más de un millón doscientos mil votos y la clasificación final no deja lugar a dudas: El proyecto que más apoyo ha recabado ha sido el presentado por La Cuadri del Hospi. La cada vez más tangible sala de respiro para niños, niñas y jóvenes en tratamiento oncológico, ha sumado un total de 48.531 votos online. Con este proyecto se busca dar respuesta a las demandas y necesidades de las familias cuyos hijos se encuentran en fases del tratamiento que no requieren ingreso en planta. 'La Cuadri del Hospi Gunea" persigue mejorar su confortabilidad, facilitar el acompañamiento, evitar los riesgos infecciosos propios del hospital y dar a elegir otro lugar donde estar, sin necesitar de ir y volver de sus casas o hacer tiempo por la calle. El segundo de los proyectos más respaldado, con un total de 44.172 votos, lleva la firma de GERNA, el Grupo de Enfermedades Raras o Poco Frecuentes de Navarra. En su caso los 5000 euros irán destinados a afianzar el programa de Atención Integral Centrado en la Persona para dar respuesta a las necesidades físicas, sociales, emocionales y de autonomía de todos los socios: afectados, familiares y familiares cuidadores. "Pretendemos que aquellas personas que presenten limitaciones y/o dificultades en relación a la enfermedad que les afecta puedan acceder a terapias individualizadas con el objetivo de buscar estrategias que faciliten su vida diaria: sesiones de Fisioterapia, Terapia ocupacional y Psicología. La intervención será individualizada, integral y centrada en cada persona".

La Cuadri del Hospi Gunea dará respuesta a "las especiales condiciones que requieren este tipo de pacientes mientras aguardan la resolución de su proceso, con el fin de mejorar su confortabilidad, facilitar el acompañamiento, evitar los riesgos infecciosos propios del hospital y dar a elegir otro lugar donde estar, sin necesitar de ir y volver de sus casas o hacer tiempo por la calle".

Euskadi registró en 2018 una tasa de 64,4 donantes de órganos por millón de habitantes, 16 puntos por encima de la media del Estado. Uno de los aspectos más destacables es el que tiene que ver con el aumento de la respuesta positiva a la donación por parte de las familias: mientras que a mediados de los años 80, 7 de cada 10 familias eran favorables a la donación, en las última década el ratio ha ascendido hasta situarse en 9 de cada 10. Pero el dato en el que nos hemos detenido en Euskadi Hoy Magazine es el que tiene que ver con los trasplantes alogénicos: el procedimiento mediante el cual una persona recibe células madre formadoras de sangre provenientes de un donante genéticamente similar, pero no idéntico. En 2018 se llevaron a cabo 68 trasplantes alogénicos en Euskadi, 24 de ellos emparentados familiarmente y 44 no emparentados.  No hay que olvidar que el trasplante de médula ósea, en ocasiones se convierte en la única opción de tratamiento efectivo a la hora de combatir una leucemia y que solo uno de cada cuatro enfermos en espera de trasplante dispone de un donante familiar compatible. Quizá a vuestros dispositivos móviles o perfiles de redes sociales os haya llegado estos días un mensaje que comienza así: “Hola a tod@s, os escribo para comentaros que mi hija Crissy (‘la chica del jersey rosa’ del vídeo de Fito con La Cuadri del Hospi), por desgracia vuelve a tener leucemia. Es la tercera leucemia seguida, por lo que la única solución que ven es el trasplante (previo tratamiento con quimio e inmunoterapia)”. Con Susana del Amo, de La Cuadri del Hospi, hemos recordado las claves de una donación que se rige por el principio de solidaridad internacional.

Euskadi registró en 2018 una tasa de 64,4 donantes de órganos por millón de habitantes, 16 puntos por encima de la media del Estado. Uno de los aspectos más destacables es el que tiene que ver con el aumento de la respuesta positiva a la donación por parte de las familias: mientras que a mediados de los años 80, 7 de cada 10 familias eran favorables a la donación, en las última década el ratio ha ascendido hasta situarse en 9 de cada 10. Pero el dato en el que nos hemos detenido en Euskadi Hoy Magazine es el que tiene que ver con los trasplantes alogénicos: el procedimiento mediante el cual una persona recibe células madre formadoras de sangre provenientes de un donante genéticamente similar, pero no idéntico. Christian T. Sinclair, MD, FAAHPM Joins us and tells his story. Hosted by Dr David Wensel. Dr. Christian Sinclair is currently an Assistant Professor in the Division of Palliative Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center. His medical training started at the University of California, San Diego, which he completed in 2000. From there he and his wife, Kelly, went to North Carolina for 3 years for an Internal Medicine residency at Wake Forest. In 2004, he completed a palliative medicine fellowship at the Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Winston-Salem, NC. Moving to Kansas City, he served for 8 years as an Associate Hospice Medical Director overseeing a 32 bed inpatient unit, leading the palliative medicine fellowship program in conjunction with the University of Kansas, all while continuing to see palliative care consults in the hospital and on home visits. He has also worked for Gentiva Health Services as a National Hospice Medical Director overseeing 40 sites and 80 Hospi

The “Researchers” have been at it again…. (a)…a university study has revealed that if women don’t talk about their age…they are much happier and contented… (b)…if you hold a 5p or a 10p piece in your hand for too long you can be affected by the nickel in them…because there is more in these coins than in others…this could be a major problem in Yorkshire I’m thinking. (c)…If you take painkillers it could cause cancer…according to research of course…this was a big announcement on the news…then they said in a quieter voice that it is only certain painkillers…but let’s get everyone panicking first. (d) …talking of panic…headline news for two days “if you go in hospital for an operation on a Friday you are more likely to DIE than if you go in an a Monday”…I’m sure all those lined up for a Friday session will be delighted with this news…..I don’t know what goes on in the heads of these TV people….they must get a big kick out of scaring everyone. . .On the subject of TV it’s getting harder to find ANYTHING worth watching….I would like to know if ANYBODY wants to watch garbage like “Embarrassing Bodies” or the selection of cheapo reality garbage…and as for the talent shows…well….what happened to quality entertainers and variety shows…even when someone wins you never see them again on TV…..there wa a young thing on tele recently who has made it big incorporating ballet with her skills on a violin…she is now world class…despite the highly talented Piers Morgan telling her she was going nowhere on America’s Got Talent. .....The Battle of The Atlantic celebrations have been in full flight in Liverpool….their surviving heroes make you proud to be British…and they also had on tele two surviving paras from the D Day Landings…saying how when the war was over they just had to get on with it…..WHAT !!!.. .On the local scene my good mate Harry Prytherch who was the drummer in The Remo Four…put on an auction of 60’s memorabilia at Fort Perch Rock which raised cash for various charities including Cancer Research…..I went along and it was a full house and hilarious..the banter from the crowd was great….there were quite a few old rockers there… ..and finally….our lovely barmaid at our Cheshire Cats jam nights at the Legion in Wallasey has donwe a parachute jump for charity….the Cheshire Cats sponsored her for £1000 which she duly earned…a very brave girl and we are all proud of her…..this and all the other money she raised goes to Alder Hey Children’s Hospi
