Presented by BrandUSA Episode Notes The market for unlimited in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity is set to boom as airlines look to make it easier for travelers to stay connected in the skies. Reporter Ajay Awtaney provides background into the history of in-flight Wi-Fi. Awtaney writes in-flight internet connectivity has come a long way since what he calls painfully slow service more than 20 years ago. As technology has improved over the past two decades, airlines have used advertising or sponsorship deals — such as a partnership with a streaming service — to make in-flight Wi-Fi more affordable. More carriers in recent years — including Delta Air Lines — have offered free Wi-Fi to members of their loyalty programs.  In addition, Airbus unveiled in 2022 the HBCplus system, which makes it easier for airlines to provide in-flight Wi-Fi.   Next, Airbnb hadn't said much about its experiences offerings amid recent struggles. But the company's Chief Financial Officer Ellie Mertz has explained what went wrong and how it plans to fix those problems, writes Executive Editor Dennis Schaal.  When asked at a Bernstein conference why Airbnb experiences hasn't been a success, Mertz said outside of packaged tours, consumers don't go to a site and book everything — flights, lodging, cars, etc. — at the same time.  Mertz also said Airbnb needs to ensure experiences are “appropriately priced” and that proper timing and personalization are keys to a successful experiences product.  Finally, Skift recently reviewed the pay for more than two dozen top bosses at U.S. destination marketing organizations. However, Global Tourism Reporter Dawit Habtemariam notes a lot of factors go into the link between CEO pay and the performance of a tourism board.  Habtemariam reports it's hard to assess how much credit destination marketing organizations should get for tourism, adding a tourist may visit for reasons unrelated to marketing.  One place the value is more clear: Meetings and conventions. “They are hugely important. That's the only organization that can talk collectively with meeting planners,” said Vijay Dandapani, a member of NYC Tourism's board of directors and CEO and president of the Hotel Association of New York City. But you can't paint with too broad a brush. As one former DMO leader told us: “Some of these CEOs are probably underpaid, some of them are probably overpaid,” she said.

Ryan Embree: Welcome to Suite Spot, where hoteliers check-in, and we check out what's trending in hotel marketing. I'm your host, Ryan Embree. Hello everyone, and welcome to another episode of The Suite Spot. This is your host, Ryan Embree, with a very special episode today. We have a first-time guest, but I'm sure, widely recognized by the entire industry, Kevin Carey, interim president and CEO of the American Hotel and Lodging Association. Kevin, thank you so much for joining me on the Suite Spot. Kevin Carey : Good morning. Happy to be with you. Ryan Embree: We're gonna cover a lot today, Kevin, so let's jump into it. Speaking of being busy, we are about to enter a busy summer travel season. I'm sure all the hoteliers listening to this podcast, wherever they're watching or listening from, are excited about that or reaching the halfway point of the year, which is crazy to say. I was there to witness live your keynote at the Hunter Hotel Investment Conference back in March in Atlanta. You shared some really great accomplishments so far, year to date that AHLA has been able to achieve. Could you share with our audience a little bit about some of the efforts and wins so far in 2024? Kevin Carey : Well, I'd be happy to and, I think your assessment is, is right on the mark. Uh, it has been a busy first four months of the year. Certainly, you hear that through, uh, we're in earning seasons now. You're hearing a lot of our member companies report out. Uh, so you'll hear some of the things happening across their scope of their operations in our environment representing the industry. It has been a very significant and busy first four months of the year, whether that's here in Washington, working with the Congress and the administration in so many state capitals, with the legislatures in session, and really across the scope of our activities whether that's, uh, the support we provide to our members through our many committees or events or, or the great work our foundation is, is doing a few key accomplishments. I point to one of real significance was the defeat of the, the joint employer rule. And that was significant, not only with action that the House took but the Senate as well as a favorable court ruling, in the Eastern District Court in Texas, blocking the implementation of that rule, because that posed some real challenges for the industry, and in particular the franchise operating model, and would've created complexities and uncertainty there in this environment. We also, a month ago, announced the rollout of our collaboration with the Hotel Association of Canada and our launch, uh, of the Green Key Global Initiative. And then finally, uh, we rebranded our, our very successful regional set of events as the Hospitality show supporting, uh, our trade show and conference, uh, which will take place in San Antonio this year, October 28th to the 30th. Uh, and we've got a number of those events planned over the coming weeks, uh, alongside the seven that we've held thus far this year. So it's been busy, as you said. Ryan Embree: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Super busy. And we're gonna talk about some of those things that you mentioned. I wanna go back to Green Key Global rather. Uh, we just celebrated Earth Day.

Tens of thousands of displaced Israelis from the Gaza periphery and the border with Lebanon have been living in hotels across the country. With no tourists and a war on, the hotels have modified themselves to give these refugee families a new home, for however long it shall be. David Tucker, general manager of the Ramada and Royal hotel in Jerusalem and chairman of the Hotel Association of Jerusalem, told reporter Arieh O'Sullivan about the efforts made to accommodate the families. He also said that despite robust government subsidies, most of the guests, in his hotel they come from Sderot, were opting to stay and not seek rental apartments because of the support they receive at the hotel, like school, food and activities. Episode Notes A large number of Americans are planning to travel this holiday season. How many? Roughly 115 million, according to the latest forecast from AAA, which predicts this holiday season will be one of its largest on record.  It projects 7.5 million travelers will fly this year, topping the record set in 2019, noted Airlines Reporter Meghna Maharishi, who added that U.S. airlines are under pressure to be ready for any extreme weather. Winter storms caused airlines to cancel thousands of flights last year.  Next, Hilton went public 10 years ago Monday in the hotel industry's biggest IPO ever. Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill lists 10 takeaways from one of the industry's most significant events. O'Neill notes one lesson for investors is that a well-priced public debut at the right company can be a great investment. In addition, Hilton used the proceeds from the IPO to pay down debt as well as help it expand. The company currently has twice as many rooms under development than it did at the time of the IPO.   Furthermore, Hilton now has 22 brands, up from 10 a decade ago, and it has chosen to develop them in-houseO'Neill writes that strategy contrasts with the acquisition-first approach of most hotel companies.  Finally, Chinese travelers won't be returning to New York City at pre-pandemic levels next year. Travel executives believe affordability and limited flights to the U.S. are hurting the recovery, writes Global Tourism Reporter Dawit Habtemariam.  Peter van Berkel, chair of the International Inbound Travel Association, said it's unaffordable for the average Chinese traveler to come to the U.S. Economy airfares from China to the U.S. can run more than $3,500, he stated during a panel discussion with New York City tourism leaders. Habtemariam also notes that flights between the U.S. and China haven't recovered to 2019 numbers.  However, Vijay Dandapani, CEO of the Hotel Association of New York City, expressed optimism that the city would see a major rebound in Chinese tourism next year.

Ms. Hicks is community-minded and sincerely invests her talents and time into many initiatives, particularly poverty reduction. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Paulette Hicks, CEO of Envision Saint John, about the amazing feat of successful inter-organizational collaboration she has pulled off in just a few short months. The regional growth agency she heads has embraced their new model of collaboration, and Paulette describes some of the creative promotions that they have already executed and seen successful results from and how they plan to build on those results in the future. What You Will Learn in this Episode: How Paulette moved from hotel management into destination marketing Lessons learned from starting a new destination marketing agency in the middle of a pandemic Why Envision Saint John wanted to go beyond the borders of the city and involve neighboring municipalities Paulette's advice for engaging multiple stakeholders in new and bold initiatives How cultivating a growth mindset has helped move Envision Saint John forward and align the stakeholders Some of the creative approaches Envision Saint John is taking in terms of messaging and programming including collaborating on a specially written song by local musicians The fantastic response they have had to their community handbook project and how they personalized them for different visitor groups Paulette's plans for building on the incredible success of the past 15 months and how Envision Saint John see the future of tourism in their region Aligning with Partners Knitting the community together was an important theme for Paulette as she built Envision Saint John. In this episode, she discusses how she was able to go beyond the city's borders and involve other municipalities in her organization's mission to attract more people to the area. The new agency brought in three legacy agencies in Saint John, which separated out property, business, and tourism under one umbrella, added a further five municipalities and created an agency that aligned around four central pillars of visitors, residents, business investment, and students. Paulette is committed to a full singular focus on growth for her entire region and has been doing a tremendous amount of work around strategy and collaboration to ensure that they're driving revenue and defining their brand. Growth and Abundance Growth mindset and abundance mindset are the terms that defined Paulette's vision of building on the impetus of Envision Saint John's first year. Her team and partners took those philosophies to heart when considering their past performance and where they want to be in five, 10, 15, and 25 years, as well as how they could create a community legacy so the young people of the area could build a life locally. Paulette took a deliberate and very thoughtful approach by listening to all the stakeholders in all the municipalities — including mayors, and town councils, to build a prospectus that they could present to tourism operators, businesses operators, entrepreneurs, and residents to ensure global buy-in for their plans. The overarching theme of being stronger together galvanized everyone to work hard for the future. Creative Collaborations Paulette also describes some of the “risky, bold, and different” collaborations that Envision Saint John set up, including an amazingly creative collaboration with high-profile local band Tomato/Tomato that highlighted all the things that local people loved about the area in a song which became the anthem of summer 2021. She also shares how they created a series of community handbooks personalized for the visitor and how the collaborations and campaigns started in 2021 will carry the organization forward into 2022 and beyond. I agree to treat everyone in the Airbnb community—regardless of their race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, or age—with respect, and without judgment or bias. Creating an account on Airbnb requires agreeing to the platform’s Community Commitment. When Airbnb became aware of users making plans to attend a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, the company took action to delete those accounts, and CEO Brian Chesky spoke out against Unite the Right, saying, “The violence, racism and hatred demonstrated by Neo-Nazis, the alt-right, and white supremacists should have no place in this world.”Jasper is joined by Hostfully marketing guru, Glenn Carter, to discuss Airbnb’s strong stance against the white nationalist philosophy. They also cover the latest in Airbnb’s ongoing conflict with the hotel industry, examining the Hotel Association of New York City’s hiring of a private security firm to hunt down illegal activity on the platform. But the news isn’t all bad! Glenn and Jasper also mention Airbnb’s latest milestone: The home-sharing site’s unprecedented four million listings – which account for more than the top five hotel chains combined. Other wins for Airbnb this week? Spotlight: Unlocking the Potential of the Tourism Industry for Tanzanians

With popular attractions such as Mount Kilimanjaro and the archipelago of Zanzibar, Tanzania is home to some of Africa’s most popular tourist destinations. Tourism is the main foreign exchange earner for the Tanzanian economy; an estimated 2 million visitors contribute 2 billion dollars to the country’s coffers each year. The sector is also one of the fastest growing industries in Tanzania. A new report by The World Bank Group finds that a greater emphasis on diversifying tourist destinations, a stronger focus on community integration, and a more transparent governance approach could yield an even greater economic dividend in the coming years. Jacques Morriset, a lead economist at The World Bank Group in Tanzania, authored the Tanzania Economic Update 6, titled, “The Elephant in the Room, Unlocking the Potential of the Tourism Industry in Tanzania.” “You need to diversify in terms of what tourists are likely to see in Tanzania. Right now, all the tourists are coming to two locations – Zanzibar, and the National Park surrounding Arusha in the north of the country.” After scrutinizing Tanzania’s tourism industry data, Morisset contends that the country could easily expand to offer more than just the beautiful National Parks or beaches for tourists. “Most of the tourists are very high hand tourists, in that they are ready to spend quite a lot of money to go to National Parks. We believe that Tanzania is so big, that you can do different kind of tourism in different kind of locations.” Diversification within the sector has other positive impacts for the local community. The report finds that local inclusion could enhance the historical and cultural tourism. The Hotel Association of Tanzania, which was established in 2008, is a non-profit working to enhance tourism in the country. Board member Jeroen Hardewijk: “You have to make strategic decisions on how you position the destination. Mass tourism has a bad connotation for most of us, and you want to be a bit careful going entirely that route. However, having said that, having a well-positioned, diverse product offering in your destination would be a good thing for the operator definitely as well.” While branding is vital, Hardewijk says physical infrastructure and also attracting international airlines are both vital for growth. Currently some of the neighboring countries, most notably Kenya, attract a lot of the intercontinental flights. Improving that would be really helpful.” Lathifa Sykes, who is Chief Executive Officer of the Hotel Association, makes some strong claims about tourism growth with support from the private sector. “Tanzania private sector believes that we can double the growth rate of Tanzania tourism by 2025. Tanzania is one of the most reserves of fresh water, one of the largest wild life numbers and a good track record in quality tourism.”
