Adam Settino is a Solutions Engineer Manager at OpenSpace.ai. He spent seven years in design as an architect and the last ten years in construction as Director of Virtual Design and Construction. Most recently, his fiery passion for identifying where technology can improve how we design and build has led him to the tech world, joining the team at OpenSpace as their Solutions Engineer Manager. TODD-TAKES There is no need to overcomplicate things. Simple is always better. I know this is easier said than done. However, with some intentional focus on the goal to simplify you will be able to achieve just that. It is so important to get different perspectives early and often. If people are involved in the planning, they are much more likely to be bought in during adoption. We need to democratize innovation throughout the company and encourage finding and bubbling up those small 1% improvements. When you are able to stack 1% improvements on each other you will be amazed the distance you can go.

How do you reconcile different opinions, economies, and levels of experience in the field? Join host Todd Weyandt and guest Simon Waldren as they discuss the world of modular prefab, the challenge that comes with different perspectives about the industry, embracing the mindset that it's okay to fail, and how to “check your ego at the door.” Simon Waldren is an Operations Director at Apex Wiring Solutions. He has experience in modular, DfMA, and LEAN. Apex and Simon work hard to advocate for modular construction, helping to drive the industry to better identify challenges, while providing solutions to adapt to meet future market needs. When thinking through the ROI for industrialized construction, remember this is a long-term play. It doesn't mean that you won't find immediate benefits, but you do need to have realistic expectations. IC is a marathon not a sprint. You are bridging the gap from what can be done to what will be done in the future. This leads me to my second take. It is important to give yourself the freedom to fail if you are learning from those mistakes. Simon had a great line that “innovation stands on the shoulders of the people before you.” Find those 1% improvements that you can make. They add up to be a monumental change. Finally, don't try to hide your mistakes. People are going to know. When you do make a mistake, own it, address it and then roll up your sleeves to fix it and learn from it. You will garner so much more respect from others in the end.
What does Industrialized Construction mean to you? Amy Marks, Head of Industrialized Construction Strategy and Evangelism at Autodesk, aka The Queen of Prefab, joins us for episode 207 of Art of Construction and episode three of our Deep Dive Series on Industrialized Construction with Autodesk. Amy Marks is on a mission to bring the construction industry into the future. As we all continue to explore the adoption of different offsite construction systems and techniques in our projects, she is leading the charge at Autodesk to rally our industry around a unified vision of how we can work together to integrate these systems and build order out of chaos. Her vision is called the "Industrialized Construction Revolution." A big part of this revolution is the groundbreaking work done by specialty mechanical subcontractors who have been successfully prefabricating for decades. We had a lot of fun learning about the prefab systems pioneered by Rosendin and Environmental Air Systems in our two previous episodes, and it was an honor to wrap up this series with the #QueenofPrefab herself. Tune in on the third and final episode of this Deep Dive Series, as Amy and Devon examine the unexpected driving factors that are bringing the Industrialized Construction Revolution forward, breaking down industry silos and misconceptions about what's ahead, and how connection in technology and culture is far more important than any one product – all with undeniable passion, and a few laughs along the way!
Bill Bullock, VP of MEP Engineered Solutions at Environmental Air Systems, joins us on episode 205 of Art of Construction and episode two of our Deep Dive Series on Industrialized Construction with Autodesk. As our industry progresses into the “Industrialized Construction Revolution,” there are plenty of misconceptions that go along with it – like the loss of individuality in buildings, or that there's a limit in what prefabrication can produce. These concerns are valid, but what can we do to break down these false walls in our minds, so we can build actual walls more efficiently? Balance, mindset, and a blended approach. One MEP contractor knows there's a need for standardization in the manufacturing process, while still accommodating custom solutions for their clients. Environmental Air Systems, the premier mechanical contractor for nearly seven decades, has been the pioneer of offsite construction solutions. From developing custom HVAC and air handling equipment in the 80's for the textile industry, now to full-scale modular data centers, they've seen constant change in processes. And throughout those years, adopting new technologies like Autodesk has been necessary in becoming the single source solution for MEP infrastructure. Join Bill and Devon on part two of this Deep Dive Series, as they discuss the unique complexities of mechanical contracting and the data center projects they acquire, EAS blazing the offsite construction trail within the HVAC industry, and maintaining a forward-thinking culture in a legacy organization.
Fred Meeske, VP of BIM Services at Rosendin, joins us on episode 203 of Art of Construction and episode one of our Deep Dive Series on Industrialized Construction with Autodesk. Modular. Prefab. Volumetric. All these words represent different methods of offsite construction currently growing in popularity in our industry. Autodesk calls this overall trend the “Industrialized Construction Revolution.” While not necessarily in the spotlight, specialty subcontractors like HVAC and MEP are quietly paving the way in this Industrialized Construction Revolution with their prefabricated and design-build approaches to projects. Rather than beginning each project with a blank sheet, they've developed their offerings as products with repeatable manufacturing methods that can be taken and adapted into custom projects. Rosendin, one of the largest electrical contractors in the United States, is one of these companies paving the way. They've adopted BIM, prefab, the Autodesk platform, and a variety of other tools into their project workflow, and have achieved many improvements in how projects are executed, how their collaborations with others are coordinated, and how time is spent on and off the jobsite as a result.Join Fred and Devon on part one of this Deep Dive Series, as they discuss thinking ahead into the future from the perspective of an electrical contractor, how Rosendin optimizes Autodesk's products and their internal processes for each job, and what a product-led approach to projects would look like in the construction industry.
In addition to Jaimie Johnston's role as Board Director at Bryden Wood, he is also the Design Lead at the Construction Innovation Hub. In this episode, he talks to his CIH colleague, Keith Waller, who is the Program Director at The Hub. They will talk about the future of the construction industry, the role of Government and how UK construction could lead the world. The Construction Innovation Hub brings together world-class expertise from the BRE, the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) and the Centre for Digital Built Britain (CDBB). Their mission is to transform the UK construction industry.
Introducing development projects to the market on time and under budget is the name of the game and is absolutely crucial to maximizing your and your investors' returns. Anthony Gude makes a strong case as to why industrialized construction (aka modular construction, off-site construction, pre-fab, etc...) is becoming more important to developers who are looking for an edge in an competitive marketplace as traditional construction costs continue to skyrocket. Peggy and Amy Marks, head of industrialized construction strategy and evangelism, Autodesk, talk about industrialized construction and prefab. Marks says while most of the prefab has been behind the walls and behind the ceiling, driven by the specialty contractor, industrialized construction is happening already. They also discuss: What is industrialized construction—and the terms surrounding it. The number of general contractors and specialty MEP subs that are already engaged in it. That it is no longer a journey—it is a race. If you are debating if you should be in the race, you have already lost. autodesk.com (10.20.20 - #691) IoT, Internet of Things, Peggy Smedley, artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data, digital transformation, cybersecurity, blockchain, 5G cloud, sustainability, future of work, podcast

We've talked extensively about the benefits a Platforms approach to Design for Manufacture and Assembly (P-DfMA) can bring to a construction project, namely cost savings, increased safety on site, better quality, more sustainable buildings. But, what does a plausible future look like in practice if government and the private sector adopt this way of working. Board Director and Head of Global Systems, Jaimie Johnston, explores what's technically achievable in a near future state and how construction Platforms unlock the true power of digital, data and manufacturing in the lifecycle of a construction project.
Bryden Wood Board Director and Head of Global Systems, Jaimie Johnston MBE, talks about a platform approach to design for manufacture and assembly (P-DfMA) and how it can benefit architects, the construction industry, the built environment and society as a whole.Bryden Wood is a technology-led design company focused on Design to Value in construction. Their pioneering work with platform design enables sets of components or assemblies to be configured in a variety of different ways, in order to create a variety of different assets within the built environment. Part of a Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) approach to construction, the benefits of platforms design include improved efficiency, costs, quality, safety and sustainability. The construction industry currently contributes 39% of global carbon emissions, so we need to act. Join us as we discuss how using Modern Methods of Construction can help the industry move towards a brighter future.Artwork: Megan Chown, Bryden Wood Music: Tamar Zak-Collins
