Schneider Electric, the leader in digital transformation of energy management and automation, has significantly scaled the manufacturing and production capacity of its Barcelona prefabricated data centre factory - increasing it from 7000m2 to 12,000m2 in response to accelerated customer demand for prefabricated, high-compute workload data centre solutions. Schneider Electric Increases Capacity Company scales existing manufacturing and integration footprint from 7000m2 to 12,000m2 in response to accelerated customer demand for prefabricated, high-compute workload data centre solutions. Significantly increases end-to-end production capabilities for Schneider Electric's complete portfolio of EcoStruxure Modular Data Centres and critical components including high-density racks, UPS, MV, LV, and Circuit Breakers. Is now the largest, dedicated manufacturing centre for Schneider Electric's prefabricated modular data centre solutions in Europe, supporting customer growth across the regions' primary and secondary markets. Headquartered in Sant Boi de Llobregat, Barcelona, the factory and large-scale logistics centre, which is one of the primary European locations for the design, production, and integration of Schneider Electric's EcoStruxure Modular Data Centre portfolio, now provides an additional 5000m2 of dedicated, production space - meeting accelerated customer requirements for speed to market, predictability, and resilient, data centre solutions. Driven by customer demands for high-compute workloads and artificial intelligence (AI), which according to PWC Global, could contribute up to $15.7 trillion to the global economy in 2030, the Sant Boi Facility is now the largest manufacturing site for Schneider Electric's prefabricated modular data centres in Europe. Analyst Omdia expects global sales of prefabricated modular data centre systems to generate $8.6bn in 2027. Further, the investment has enabled the company to double the end-to-end production, integration, testing and output capabilities for both its all-in-one modular data centres and prefabricated power modules. This includes key powertrain components such as three-phase uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), low (LV) and medium-voltage (MV) equipment, circuit breakers and switchgear. "Prefabricated modular data centres are one of the most efficient and sustainable ways to design and deploy high performance data centre capacity at speed and scale, while ensuring less wastage, optimised production and a reduction in the embedded carbon within the space," said Marc Garner, SVP, Secure Power & Data Centre Business, Schneider Electric, Europe. "By scaling up our end-to-end production capacity in Barcelona, we're reinforcing our supply chain capabilities at a time of unprecedented growth, and ensuring customers in Europe have access to fast, predictable, and high-quality data centre solutions, which can be designed and operational in as little as 24-weeks." A resilient global supply chain, built for AI and accelerated computing Recently, Schneider Electric announced a $3 billion (€2.76B) multi-year agreement with Compass Datacenters, one of Inc. Magazine's 5000 fastest growing companies, to integrate both organisations' respective supply chains, and manufacture prefabricated modular data centre solutions quickly and cost-effectively, at-scale. In direct response to the burgeoning demand for AI, this unique 5-year agreement has enabled Schneider Electric and Compass Datacenters to deliver highly scalable, modular data centres that offer a simplified design, streamlined manufacturing, and the ability to be deployed easily across a multitude of remote environments. Schneider Electric's investment in its Sant Boi factory mirrors this strategy entirely and will provide European customers with the ability to scale-up their data cener operations in Tier 1 and Tier 2 data centre markets, and accelerate deployment times by utilising best-in-class manufacturing and testing capabilities...

I'm a little unsure of the best way to frame this introduction. In some ways, this is a story of embracing climbing for all the right reasons. Pursuit of technical mastery and love for the outdoors over the gamification of grades and emphasis on physical training. On the other hand, this is also the story of early adulthood in the modern era. The narrative to pursue something like climbing full-time is strong in the outdoor world. But most I encounter eventually find that climbing alone leaves us yearning for meaning and purpose. My guest today, Tyler Karow, spent nearly three years on the road pursuing climbing. Today he balances considerable climbing achievements with a secondary passion for building and a desire to be a part of the solution to America's affordable housing crisis.Karow is a 29-year-old climber known for his big wall accomplishments in Yosemite, Patagonia, and around the globe. His resume includes a ground-up free ascent of Golden Gate (5.13a) on El Cap, and Yosemite's Triple Crown in under 24 hours, only the eighth time this feat has been achieved. Notably, Karow climbed the Triple while working a full-time (plus) job. He holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Southern California and is a licensed civil engineer and general contractor. With this background in engineering and construction, he envisions a career helping to build prefabricated tiny home communities. This emerging approach to construction helps to reduce the cost of new housing and more efficiently add supply to a stressed housing market. This episode is an Oreo of sorts, with a focused discussion of Tyler's climbing achievements and work/life balance in the beginning and end. The middle of this discussion takes a deep dive into the affordable housing crisis, the complex nature of new construction, and Tyler's vision for the future of American affordable housing. Support this project: Buy Me a CoffeeGet the newsletter: SUBSCRIBE ME!Show Notes and Links at Clippingchains.com

You know the saying: They don't build them like they used to. When it comes to homes and buildings, that's usually said like it's a bad thing. But with a changing climate and changing marketplace, building things like we used to — brick by brick, nail by nail — just doesn't cut it any more.  Enter modular construction. The idea isn't totally unheard of. Prefabricated buildings have been around for decades. But New Iberia's Tiago Atwi and his brother have brought a new twist on the concept with their comany, Boxy Construction.  Boxy designs and delivers steel framed, modular structures for residential and commercial construction. Think of it like real-life legos. Boxy ships all the parts you need, pre-fabricated with the fastenings and holes you need to set up the building quickly.  Tiago is a mechanical engineer by trade and worked on wind turbines out of college, getting his start on modular construction for a company based in Atlanta. He decided to bring the concept home to New Iberia where he grew up. And Boxy was born.  It's not just building standards that have changed. They don't make soap like they used to either. Ebony Robert figured that out when her son had a stubborn case of eczema. On a trip back home to visit family in Orlando, her great grandmother encouraged her to make him some old fashioned lye soap.  It worked. And suddenly, Ebony had a good problem on her hands: she needed to make a lot more soap. That journey led her to founding Ebony's Beauty Hair and Skin Care. By 2015, she was selling her products in stores and online. In 2018, she opened a storefront in Lafayette's Northgate mall. The brand has grown tremendously. Ebony's products are sold by Amazon, Walmart and carried by Doordash. Her shop carries about 3,000 different beauty and wellness products. But her handmade soaps are still the star of the show — and Ebony still mixes, labels and ships them all herself.  In 2020, Ebony opened the Entrepreneurship Learning Academy to help others learn how to run businesses.  Out to Lunch Acadiana was recorded live over lunch at Tsunami Sushi in downtown Lafayette. Guest post by Marc Garner, VP, Secure Power Division, Schneider Electric UK & Ireland Ireland has long been a popular location for data centres, in part due to the long-term industrial policy of encouraging high-technology industry clusters around key verticals, including pharmaceuticals, software, web development, and other digital-centric industries. This a strategy which requires both inward investment and indigenous growth, and somewhat inevitably, the availability of resilient IT and data centres, alongside excellent connectivity to the cloud. There is, however, a downside to having so many large data centres in the country, namely the electrical power that is needed to keep them running. In recent times, we've seen a growing criticism from key stakeholders and environmental groups who have questioned the energy demand of the sector, and its impact on the country's net-zero targets. Added into this mix, the global surge in wholesale power and gas prices has led to a significant jump in both the unit price and standing charges for households and businesses, something further underlined by Electric Ireland, who last month announced that gas prices are set to increase almost 30% from August. Amid this backdrop and following a public consultation, in late 2021 Ireland's electricity network operator – EirGrid – began to notify data centre businesses that they would not provide new connections to Dublin-based facilities until 2028, and that any new applications would be assessed on a ‘case-by case basis'. In response, the sector has openly challenged the ‘estimated' power consumption surrounding the industry and undertook its own analysis using data from the Irish Central Statistics Office (CSO). The investigation compared statements detailing data centre power demands published by EirGrid with a landmark study of the actual metered electricity consumption of data centres by CSO Ireland. It found the majority of power reserved for data centres during Ireland's energy crisis was left unused. In fact, data centres consumed only about 25% of the grid capacity that Ireland's two state-owned grid operators reserve for them. This argument will of course continue to play out, but it is essential that industry, CRU, and government come together to find collaborative solutions to these challenges without hindering enterprise innovation or GDP. Further, data centres remain the heart of the digital economy, and as we begin to run metaverse type applications that require higher envelopes of power, and support applications in life sciences, financial services, gaming and streaming, sustainability and resilience will become ever more important to the country's businesses. What are prefabricated data centres? At Schneider Electric, we believe that rather than being a hindrance, data centres can play a key role in unlocking Ireland's sustainability and resilience ambitions, especially where integration with the grid is concerned. Data centre designs, however, come in many forms, and in recent years they have transformed from traditional bricks and mortar designs to harnessing the power of prefabricated technology. For many, prefabricated data centres provide a standardised, pre-engineered, and pre-integrated infrastructure system, containing integrated power, cooling, racks and IT that can be delivered as functional building blocks of power, cooling, IT or all-in one data centres. in a secure. These modules are quick to deploy, predictable, and can be deployed for 15% less cost than traditional data centres. Ireland has long been known as a key location for hyperscale data centre operators, and internet giants across the globe have been able to use the economics of scale offered by prefab, in addition to other technological innovations and the shift towards renewable energy, to increase capacity against the backdrop of prolific demands for data and connectivity. The average business, however, is facing a soaring demand for data storage and ...

In this episode, we're going to talk about Kodasema. They are an Estonian company that aims to provide affordable housing by creating modular, movable units called KODA. Prefabricated, sustainable, and available worldwide, these homes have various applications, and joining us today to explain some of them is Kodasema's CEO, Birgit Linnamäe. She also shares with us her experiences, from how she rose to success in the construction industry by connecting with people, why it is essential to understand how people communicate, and how you too can grow your business even in the middle of a pandemic. As always, there's a lot to take away from this conversation, so stay tuned and enjoy the show! Addressing Humanity's Need for HomesHousing can mean different things for different people around the world. For some, a house could be a 4000 square foot house with a garage and front yard. Meanwhile, it could be as bare as a roof over their heads for others. When Kodasema started, Birgit and her team aimed to create a minimum viable space, which in engineering is a test version of something they would develop later. And eventually, the KODA unit was designed with multifunctionality in mind, where it becomes more than just a living space. So Koda became a tool to create whatever “space” you could ever want and need—a hotel, a shop, a clinic, and the list goes on. As for the architecture, designing such a versatile space proved to be less complicated than anticipated. In turn, Kodasema adopted a high-tech design for their units, which leads with simplicity. KODA units are cube-like in shape and built with modern materials that, again, allow their occupants to get as creative as they want to be. In the end, not only does Kodasema address humanity's need for housing, but it also provides its need for homes, whether it be for people, businesses, or even ideas.  Quality Transient Housing Anytime AnywhereNowadays, anyone can travel anywhere around the world and work simultaneously. And while being a digital nomad is not new, more people's minds have been expanded to it, especially in recent years. But, when asked about the possibility of bringing our homes with us when we travel, Birgit explained that, while it is not sustainable to do so, KODA units can at least provide digital nomads today the ease of finding a quality place to stay. And unless we see it from an urban redesign standpoint, taking our homes with us is not the way to go.  Birgit also proposed that if we want to make cities and even the countryside more livable and loveable, we need to design spaces and housing to match the current generation's expectations. That being said, what Kodasema expects digital nomads to experience with KODA units is always to be reassured that they have a home anywhere in the world, regardless of how transient it can be. After all, housing is often our main concern when traveling to faraway places. But with Koda parks and stay hotels in different cities, whether you are in New York, Paris, or London, you can rest assured that you will have more than just a roof over your head. About Birgit Linnamäe:Birgit Linnamäe is an accomplished strategic advisor and trainer with more than 24 years of interdisciplinary experience in business development across industry sectors in complex and multilingual settings (11 languages). In 2003, she co-founded the Nordic Vision Group, a business development consultancy engaging in many international growth projects in 15 countries. They also serve as a valuable hands-on partner in training individuals and teams, just as in strategic and market expansion in Europe and Asia. In this episode of the Build Hatch Podcast, we sat down with Tom Rolland from KL Modular Systems Australia, a commercial modular construction company. Tom grew up in Melbourne and after leaving school at grade 12 Tom stepped into the world of men's fashion. Being interested in process' he studied the fabrication of garments from start to finish, all while breaking the traditional mould of a straight male working in fashion. KLMSA is a family business and Tom shares how his mum came to be the owner. Seeing the correlation between fabric fabrication and construction he jumped into KLMSA as a building estimator. Tom is process-driven and saw the correlation between fashion and the construction industry. The importance of accurate estimation allows KL Modular systems to deliver a prefabricated project on time and on budget. The advantages of building off-site and then coming into a school, for example, and installing over a matter of weeks rather than months or years. The possibilities of bringing a design to KLMSA and their process for creating a prefabricated build. KLMSA is currently working with the Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA) creating classrooms, sporting centres and childcare centres. The pre-fabrication industry, as a whole, and the pivots required to drive this relatively new concept in Australia. Tom's hopes for the future of modular buildings. A standard briefing process with KL Modular Systems. Tom defines ‘Form Following Function' and designing for function first. Tom describes the recent Bacchus Marsh Grammar School project, which is one of the biggest ones they have ever created. KLMSA is still a full turnkey solution and the challenges of working with pre-existing infrastructure. Everything is a process and his experience in the fashion industry gave him a good foundation for his role in construction now.  Life outside of the construction industry for Tom. The future for the KLMSA family.   Sit back and enjoy this insightful episode with Tom Rolland. Links: KL Modular Systems Australia Build Hatch

At this station you can see two ways to achieve fall in a roofing element. While traditional on-site roofing is still common, it is also possible to build roof cassettes in a safe and clean off-site facility, significantly reducing the amount of work to be completed on site. Prefabricated roof cassettes can take many forms. The first example here is demonstrated at floor level, and shows a flat cassette which features battens, external insulation, deep profile roof cladding, and a fall restraint anchor. This system is simple to fabricate and transport, as it essentially sits flat on the factory floor (or the bed of a truck). Fall is them implied to the roofing element through the varying height of loadbearing elements, with the external elements fabricated to be shorter than the internal elements. Where the element is prefabricated complete with cladding, some cladding would typically be left off on either edge of the cassette so it may be “stitched” together and made watertight once installed. The second example shown here can be seen above you at roof height, and shows a roof cassette with a fall built in through the use of a graded batten system. Similarly to the first example, this system features battens, and insulation blanket, and roof sheeting. While this system may be a little less efficient to fabricate and transport, it allows for higher roof gradients, and as such may be required in areas of increased rainfall or snow. This larger cassette option also demonstrates how the structure of the box gutter can be built into the prefabricated element, again minimising work on site. While both systems are examples of advanced prefabrication, it is possible to reduce the amount of prefabrication undertaken in either. For example, you may elect to only life the cassette with battens, installing the roof sheeting as a separate work task.
