Operation Inglenook is an initiative by the Australian Border Force which claims to focus on identifying exploitation and potential victims of trafficking and modern slavery. This harmful - and unsuccessful - approach unfairly targets the sex industry, leading to invasive workplace raids, canceled visas, detention and deportation. This is very distressing for migrant sex workers, no matter their visa status. Operation Inglenook is a racist, violent campaign targeting Asian-migrant sex workers through workplace and border raids. Today's speeches are from a rally held on 17 April 2025 and are: Bee from Justice for our sisters, Penny who is a migrant sex worker, and a statement from the The Asian Migrant Sex Worker Advisory Group (AMSWAG).

Off the main highway that runs through Napa Valley and specifically through Saint Helena, one can make a hard left turn after passing the cute gas station that doubles as a coffee shop (yes, new meaning to the question "leaded?". Make the next right and travel a block or two and you will find a hidden gem of a tasting room. Understated and doubling as an office, Chris Phelps and his son Josh hole up here to create their wine magic. Chris's path to this quaint tasting room/office has taken him all over the world to make wine, not the least of which at Chateau Petrus (perhaps the most expensive wine at release that Bordeaxux has to offer). If you add in various other wineries not to mention Inglenook, where he crafted wine for Francis Ford Coppola at the historical Inglenook winery, you have a pedigreed career. Ad Vivum is his brand and he sources grapes from the finest vineyards in the Napa Valley. What is astounding about his wines...he cares not for the trend of over-extracted, fruit-forward clichéd wines of the Napa Valley...he actually gets acid out of grapes grown in this special wine region of the world. Meet the non-conformist, Chris Phelps.   Sometimes an interviewer and an interviewee just sync up...have a listen.

Corey Beck Corey Beck, chief winemaker for Francis Ford Coppola's wine portfolio, is back on California Wine Country today, joining Steve Jaxon, Dan Berger and Barry Herbst from Bottle Barn. Corey grew up in Knights Valley and his grandfather was a vineyard manager for Chateau Montelena. He planted the vineyard that produced the grapes that won the Judgement of Paris. The label said Alexander Valley-Napa, even if Alexander Valley is actually in Sonoma. Dan Berger briefly tells the story of the Judgement of Paris. Steven Spurrier ran a wine shop in Paris and decided to stage a blind tasting competition between his favorite California wines and the best French wines, with French judges. When the California wines won both the white and the red, the French establishment rebelled, but when they restaged it several years later, California won again. Beck started with the Coppola company in 1998 as assistant winemaker. In 2006 they acquired the Sonoma property which is theirs today, complete with swimming pool. The Coppola Family portfolio other properties including Inglenook. “The good news is, we work for a creative genius,” he says. Last Monday night was the award ceremony where Francis Ford Coppola received a lifetime achievement award from Wine Enthusiast. He said, “One of the great joys of my life is that all my family members are now on a wine label.” His Director's Cut wines are made in Sonoma County. Barry Herbst says that Coppola wines did very well in the SF Chronicle competition this year and they are available at Bottle Barn. Corey Beck gives credit to the growers who produce their fruit. They also have a property in Oregon now. According to Dan Berger, Oregon is producing great Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc, in addition to Pinot Noir. Dan says Gamay Noir is hot as a pistol up there, and we don't even get any in California. The Coppolas also have a resort property in Italy. They practice and celebrate the Italian way of life, centered around the dinner table, and including good wine, in all of their locations. They describe the wide variety of brands and labels, especially the Diamond series, a consumer-friendly price point. Dan says that Francis wanted those wines to be dry, not “soft.” Those wines were dry with structure and balance and “...the market place became a little more sophisticated because of what Francis did.” In the mid-90s, when they launched the Diamond Series in the US, there were roughly 3000 wine wholesalers and only 1800 wineries in the US. Now, we have around 600 wholesalers (with some consolidation) and 11,000 wineries in the US. Today that makes it more difficult to get the wines “through that hourglass.” Nothing is easy, with consolidation on the wholesale side and the winery side and many alternatives to wine. A major difference, says Dan Berger, is direct-to-consumer sales. Three years ago, 10% of the wine sold in the US was sold direct-to-consumer, and today that is 40%. That is a huge change and Dan credits Bottle Barn for having the Number One retail concept with their new business model combining the Bottle Barn store with a robust online store that offers delivery.

About Evan Schiff: https://www.francisfordcoppolawinery.com Evan Schiff was born in Northern California, yet raised in the Southern California community of Orange County by his wine-savvy parents who were members of several prestigious wine clubs. After overhearing his parents’ casual conversations about wine, he decided to make his own special bottle of juice at the ripe old age of 7 years old. With a plastic jug, a few grape juices, soda and strawberries, he managed to ferment his first medley. Much to his surprise the lid shot off the bottle and left a huge mess to clean up before his parents could notice. One could say this early determination was foreshadowing for his flourishing wine career. Schiff’s fascination and determination to be part of the wine industry never faltered. As he puts it, “Winemaking has many facets: economics, history, science, engineering, personality, agriculture -- and it’s quite astounding.” With that philosophy in mind, he moved back to Northern California in 1997 to attend the University of California, Davis, known as having one of the best winemaking and viticulture programs in the nation. In 2005, Schiff started his winemaking career in Napa Valley with the Coppola family. He started as a laboratory technician at what was then called Niebaum-Coppola Winery (what would become known in later years as Rubicon Estate, followed by the current name Inglenook). Just a few months into his role, he was presented with the opportunity to visit the Argentine winemaking province of Mendoza to participate in the harvest season at the reputable and award-winning Dominio del Plata Winery. Working alongside renowned winemaker Susana Balbo on her signature wines as well as the winery’s popular Crios brand, Schiff gained valuable insight into the inner workings and craftsmanship of fine wines. It was there that he met and fell in love with Argentine local Virginia, who would eventually become his wife after a three-year, long-distance relationship. Upon returning to the Coppola family’s winemaking business, he was promoted to enologist of Rubicon Estate where he spearheaded winemaking efforts for some of the company’s sizable brands. In 2006, during Schiff’s time as enologist, winery owner Francis Ford Coppola started his eponymous Sonoma County winery in Geyserville, providing a distinct home for some of the popular, flourishing brands, such as Diamond Collection and Rosso & Bianco. As Francis Ford Coppola Winery continued to evolve and expand efforts in Sonoma County, Schiff was promoted and relocated to Geyserville to become associate winemaker, where he continues to oversee daily winemaking, crush facilities and wine business operations, focusing primarily on the winery’s red wines of the Diamond Collection. His expertise working with more than 200 grape growers in eight counties throughout California provides him with a well-rounded perspective for creating distinct wines showcasing a variety of diverse appellations. When asked about his proudest accomplishment, he says, “The team’s success story of the Diamond Collection Claret. There’s so much that goes into it. Everyone has a role and everyone is invested at every level. That blend is the flagship and it’s a model of the classic Coppola story.” Schiff lives in Sonoma County with his wife Virginia and their son. When he’s not busy on the crushpad, he spends his free time enjoying hobbies such as building wood ships, hiking and camping.   About eMeals: eMeals is America’s leading online meal planning solution. In Part 1 of our interview Robin shares her family's deep history in the wine business. Our conversation starts with her great-granduncle Gustave Niebaum’s journey from Helsinki to Napa Valley, and his dream to produce “the finest wines which equal and exceed the most famous vintages of Europe”.  We talk about his founding of Inglenook Vineyards and Winery in Rutherford in 1879,  Prohibition, the transfer of ownership of Inglenook to her father John Daniel in 1936 and the legendary Inglenook wines that he made until his death in 1964, which are still coveted today by connoisseurs. Robin shares the memories of her life growing up at Inglenook and walks us through the history of Inglenook and how her childhood home and surrounding vineyards of nearly 2,000 acres were ultimately acquired by the Eleanor and Francis Ford Coppola.

I jumped at the chance to do an interview with Chris. We finally made that happen in December. You may not realize this but Inglenook was one of the first estate wineries in Napa Valley, founded in 1879 by Finnish sailor (and early entrepreneur), Gustave Niebaum. Following its sale in the mid-60s the winery's quality and reputation suffered. Enter Francis Ford Coppola. Through his love and decades of painstaking efforts the winery is once again an internationally respected estate and remains a Napa Valley icon. This is its story.

Ginny Fischbach of Impact100 on Impact Investing Inglenook Romy interviews the founder of Impact 100 Oakland County (Michigan), Ginny Fischbach. What happens when 100 women put $1000 each together for a community good? http://bonfiresofsocialenterprise.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Impact_directors.jpg ()    Full transcription Romy: Welcome to the Impact Investing Inglenook of Bonfires of Social Enterprise. You will meet Ginny Fischbach of a women’s funding group named Impact 100. Now there are Impact 100 groups all over the world. You will learn more about these groups in just one minute. First, I want to give a shout out to our listeners and fans in Australia. I want to thank you for your support of our show. And, I know you guys have an Impact 100 group! Very cool. Okay, let me turn our attention to my interview with Ginny Romy: Welcome, Ginny. Ginny: Well, thank you, glad to be here. Romy: I’m excited to interview you for our Impact Investing segment of Bonfires of Social Enterprise. Let’s jump right to it, what is Impact100? Ginny: Well, Impact100 is you get a group of women, and you try for a hundred or more women, each woman gives a thousand dollars, donates a thousand dollars, and then we turn that into a one hundred thousand dollar grant for some local nonprofit. If we get more members, of course, the grants get bigger. It started in Cincinnati in 2001, the first Impact100. A lady by the name of Wendy Steele, who now lives in Michigan. She started a group of one hundred in Cincinnati. She had heard of giving circles and stuff and thought it was a great idea to pool money but at a larger scale. She got a hundred women and gave out a hundred thousand dollar grant, and it’s been growing ever since then. Cincinnati now has almost five hundred members, so they’re giving close to half a million dollars out a year in grants, which is just awesome. Romy: Oh my gosh, yes. Ginny: They’ve made a huge impact on that city, and they’re really active. It’s grown now to thirty-six chapters around the world, thirty of which are in the US and six in Australia, over four hundred thousand members around the country which are really pretty cool. It’s very, also, a loose organization so we’re not paying dues into a national organization of any kind, it’s just everybody helps each other to do their own thing in their area. You can modify the processes and stuff to fit your local area, to make it work for you, so it’s really pretty exciting. Romy: That’s incredibly exciting. I love anything that has to do with a village coming around an idea, sourcing, lots of resources. You get a lot of people together, and you can really make a huge impact. Is that where the name came from or is there a history of the name? Ginny: Exactly. She named it Impact100 thinking, “If I get a hundred women, I can make a huge impact. If we pool our money we can make a huge impact on a community.” That’s where the name came from, which is pretty exciting. Romy: When did Oakland County’s begin? Ginny: Well, we just started this year. This is our first year, so we’re really excited. We started getting members first of the year, we got our 501(c)(3) from the IRS in November, I think it was, so right after the holidays we started. In about six months we were able to find a hundred women, so we know there’s a lot of women who want to give in the community. We have a lot of areas we haven’t even reached in Oakland County, yet so I think we can get a lot more members real soon. We just started and if we want to talk about why we started? I have a home down in Fairhope, Alabama, and it’s in Baldwin County. There’s an organization down there, an Impact100 organization, that now has almost five hundred members, so they’re giving out close to half a million dollars a year in the area. The women down...

This is our first Impact Investing segment of Season 2, and we plan to publish monthly. Now, I am going to be a little disruptive here to some of the impact investing conversations. While financial capital is critical in impact investing, it is certainly not the end all and be all solution. You see, a truth I have come to understand is that without people support in the form of skill building, advice, brainstorming, networking, it is almost impossible for the social enterprise to succeed. I am not saying that it can't happen. What I am saying is this: I have watched capital placed into social impact ventures over and over again for the last five years. My truth is this; the best outcomes are smaller dollar amounts put in over-time with high-powered people support to walk through the decision matrix of everyday business planning. So, my point here is that lending time and advice and people skills are just as important, if not more important than the money. The scenes have played out in front of me like Hollywood movies. With as much as I have witnessed, you would have thought I would have done a show on this earlier. Haha, sometimes it takes me a minute to realize it is an actual pattern. So, on this episode, you are going to meet Tom Doescher. Tom is a great friend and has been a council to our firm, Gingras Global, for a long time. I am so thankful. Tom and his wife, Barbara, use their financial capital to both support non-profit charities and impact investing. They have a long history of sharing their resources with others around the world. I have asked Tom, for this episode, to hone in on what impact investing means regarding giving your time and helping with skill-building and advice. You will learn that Tom's focused outcome of impact investing – whether it is his time or money – is to create and sustain jobs. He is very interested in supporting the city of Flint, Michigan, specifically. And, as a treat for any of you that may be listening that are leaving a long somewhat traditional career – thinking about transitioning to support social enterprise, he gives some great tips at the end on how to navigate that transition. Okay, let's listen in to my interview with Tom Doescher. Tom Doescher : My business background is I was a partner in a consulting firm for over 40 years and worked in the last 20 years with manufacturing in businesses, auto suppliers, and built a very substantial practice and really loved working with businesses. On a personal side, Barbara and I led over 30 mission trips all over the world and we did medical teams, construction, children's ministry, and other sundry activities so that was the other part of our life. Really as we were looking at what we call our next season, we said "What do we feel that we're being called to do?" Believe it or not we melded together our business activities with our ministry activities because really we're all about helping businesses create job. We have to have profits to have jobs, but our real focus is on creating jobs...
