When hard bands go soft... Today on HardLore we explore our favorite "soft" songs played by bands that are normally much harder. Not every ballad is soft and not every soft song is a ballad. Forged in the crucible of the Tri-State hardcore and thrash scenes, New York City's Into Another released three genre-defying albums that blend together -- seemlessly -- the disparate sensibilities of its members. The band's membership boasts a heritage that includes such stalwart acts as Whiplash and Youth of Today, though Into Another's rich, mystical rock hardly betrays those roots. Episode 102 of Radical Research does its best to reveal the treasures of this tragically-overlooked band.  Note I: Please consider donating if you listen to Radical Research often: https://www.paypal.me/rrpodcast We also have a webstore where you can find shirts, CDs, and books, many of them recently restocked: http://radicalresearch.org/shop/ Music cited in order of appearance: “Robot Whales” (Into Another, 1991) “Underlord” (Into Another, 1991) “While I Die” (Into Another, 1991) “As It Were” (Into Another, 1991) “Laughing at Oblivion” (Ignaurus, 1994) “Maritime Murder” (Ignaurus, 1994) “William” (Ignaurus, 1994) “Mutate Me” (Seemless, 1995) “Locksmiths & Lawyers” (Seemless, 1995) “For a Wounded Wren” (Seemless, 1995) “Crossed” (Omens, 2017) Radical Research is a conversation about the inner- and outer-reaches of rock and metal music. This podcast is conceived and conducted by Jeff Wagner and Hunter Ginn. Though we consume music in a variety of ways, we give particular privilege to the immersive, full-album listening experience. Likewise, we believe that tangible music formats help provide the richest, most rewarding immersions and that music, artwork, and song titles cooperate to produce a singular effect on the listener. Great music is worth more than we ever pay for it.

The moniker "post-hardcore" was used to describe the wave of bands following the hardcore-punk sound but pushing the musical envelope. In the 80s it was Husker Du and Minute, the 90s Fugazi, Drive Like Jehu, Jawbox. None were exactly the same, each stretching and pushing the boundaries of what made up post-hardcore. New York City, home to Helmet, Quicksand, and Chavez, was fertile ground for the sound, which included Into Another. On their 1994 sophomore album, Ignaurus, the band take the edge and energy of post-hardcore, combine it with some progressive rock, and end up with a sound unlike just about anyone else was making at the time.   Songs In This Episode: Intro - Running Into Walls 14:44 - Maritime Murder 30:24 - Anxious 45:02 - Poison Fingers Outro - Ungodly   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. However, as often happened in the 90s, Revelation Records released the album on vinyl with its own catalog number. Sellout Stories: Norman Brannon (Texas Is the Reason)

Hello and welcome to REPLY ALT, the only/greatest newsletter about music in the world. Welp, SELLOUT has been out for a week and the response has been so overwhelming. Every morning I wake up to dozens and dozens and dozens of nice messages from you all. Apologies if I haven’t gotten to all of them but I really appreciate the support! I’ve done approximately 9,000 interviews about the book recently if you want to read/listen to any of em. There have been a few new ones I’m probly forgetting. I was interviewed by Mark Hoppus, which kinda blows my mind. He asked me to settle the debate: The Blue Album vs. Pinkerton. Naturally, I panicked and asked him to settle MY debate: Dookie vs. The Blue Album. He chose wisely. (Dookie.)Aaaaaanyway. I mentioned the other day that I was starting an interview series called Sellout Stories, where I expand the major-label tales of people in the book. (My first guest was Chris from Anti-Flag.) Since Texas Is the Reason’s Norman Brannon makes an appearance in the chapter on Jimmy Eat World, talking about how great Clarity is, I figured he should be the second guest and woooo boy what a story his band had! This conversation ended up being so much deeper than I’d expected. We talked a lot about putting mental health first, the added difficulty of being a closeted gay man in the face of rock stardom, and lots of other heavy topics. Also, haircuts. This was a really special chat and I hope you like it. You can listen above or on Spotify, Apple, etc. If you want the short text version, below is the section about Norman that appears in my new photo zine, MAJOR LABEL DEBUT, which you can pick up in my online store.Oh, and if you’re in the NY area, come to Vitus this Saturday! I’ll be in conversation with Geoff Rickly. Non-ticketed. Just show up. I’ll have books for sale. Happy to sign em. Also, the first 20 people who buy a book there will get a FREE photo zine. The first 10 people to buy multiple copies will get a FREE tote bag.SELLOUT is a book about bands releasing their major label debut albums, so technically Texas Is the Reason was ineligible for inclusion. But as far as major-label signings go, the New York band might take the award for all-time closest near miss. The band had people interested in them from their very first show in 1994, says guitarist Norman Brannon. They played six songs in his Manhattan living room for their group of friends, who happened to be members of bands like Youth of Today and Sick of It All, as well as people who ran or worked for record labels. So, there were eyes on them from day one, and they had the chance to go major very early.“At that time in New York City, there were only two streams,” says Brannon. “You were either going to be an indie band or you were going to be a major band. Quicksand, Into Another, Orange 9mm, Sick of It All, CIV, they were all on major labels. So it wasn’t foreign to us because those people were all our friends and they didn’t seem to be having a difficult or miserable time on a major label. I wasn’t super anti-major, but it didn’t feel right.” Wanting more time to figure out what their band was about, Texas Is the Reason shooed away major label A&Rs by locking in a deal with indie Revelation Records for two full-lengths and an EP. “‘That way, all the major labels will leave us alone.’ That’s what we thought,” he says. “But that did not happen. As soon as we signed, they actually got more aggressive. It got crazy.”Major labels pursued the band even harder after their debut EP sold an impressive 30,000 copies for Revelation. The band’s profile kept growing as more and more A&R reps took them out to lunch, bought them groceries, and gave them free CDs. The members started to fall under the major-label spell and finally conceded: Maybe we really are that good. Further bolstering their confidence were the price tags being thrown around. “The highest offer we received was $3.5 million for three albums,” Brannon says. “$500,000 was a non-recoupable signing bonus. They were literally gonna give us half a million just to sign us.”The band whittled the long list of interested suitors down and ultimately agreed to ink a deal with Capitol for $2.3 million. Their lawyer drafted up the paperwork while the band was on tour with the Promise Ring. As soon as they returned home, it’d be ready for signing and they'd be cut a check that day. But the nearer the signing drew, the more Brannon felt like backing out.“I was having a really difficult time in life. I’ve struggled with clinical depression for as long as I can remember, and had suicidal ideation before puberty. 1996 was a particularly difficult year for my depression. I believe it was neurological and situational. The situational aspects were the pressures of being in the band and feeling the weight of people depending on me and feeling uncomfortable with the amount of responsibility I had. On top of that, I was hitting this place in my life where I was starting to realize that I needed to be an out gay man. This was at a time when Jason from the Promise Ring was coming out and he was attacked mercilessly on the Jade Tree message board, so I knew there was risk. So now I’m about to sign a major record deal and if I do that, will I have to stay in the closet?”When he expressed to the rest of the members that he wanted to break up the band, some shared his sentiment while others thought he was out of his mind. They called it quits in 1997 and it caused a rift between them which took some years to mend. When asked if he regrets his decision all these years later, Brannon says no. “Had I signed that contract, I’m not kidding, I would be dead. 100 percent, I cannot stress that enough. ...So how could I possibly regret it?”Order my book, SELLOUT, here: Bookshop | B&N | Amazon | Books-A-Million | GoodreadsCome to the events in New York and Los Angeles.Shop the merch store.Follow me on the internet. Twitter | Instagram | Website Get full access to REPLY ALT at danozzi.substack.com/subscribe

Episode 31 Richie Birkenhead.. A Unique Voice. https://www.thisishardcorefest.com/podcast/episode31 From the earliest days of NYHC, Richie Birkenhead was there, but in a different position that you'd might expect. His growing up in Upper West Side and high school would lead him to the Lower East Side and playing in the clubs that would be the first homes for NYHC, which at the time, wasn't even called Hardcore yet. After his first time seeing Bad Brains, Richie was all in and obsessed. So much so, he'd eventually start a band which would turn into Underdog. Underdog has always stood out sonicaly and part of that came from Richie's outstanding vocals. His impact wouldn't end with that band as he would join and be a part of Youth of Today. His time touring with YOT would be the impetus for his taking the art to a new level in Into Another. There is a lot here to dissect and Richie does a wonderful job of giving the details, the feelings and his perspective on a huge part of our history, from its very meager beginnings through the 80s and into the 90s. He is a unique figure as someone whose career began before HC truly began, but would be a member in multiple NYHC bands each of which would be their own force of influence in our culture. His experience, his career and his personal experiences is something that may have been overlooked at times, but is certainly a story I wanted to have on our show so we can hear from someone who watched hardcore shift and helped grow it into something more than it was when he first encountered it. https://www.facebook.com/underdognyc http://www.bridge9.com/underdog https://www.facebook.com/IntoAnother https://intoanother.bandcamp.com/ Help Rob from Brass City Printing with Medical Bills for his Mother's Cancer Surgery https://cthardcore.bigcartel.com/

Warzone/Always - A Friend For Life (Lower East Side Crew E.P.) Youth of Today/Shout It (Break Down the Walls) Bold/Nailed To The X (Speak Out) Gorilla Biscuits/New Direction (Start Today) Judge/Bringin' It Dow (Bringin' It Down) Shelter/Enough (Perfection Of Desire) Inside Out/No Spiritual Surrender (No Spiritual Surrender) Iceburn/Iron - I (Hephaestus) Into Another/Anxious (Ignaurus) Better Than a Thousand/Motivation (Just One) Elliott/Second Story Skyscraper (U.S Songs) Primal Rite/Chapter Zero (Dirge Of Escapism) Pour finir un mix des groupes qui nous semblent important.

He played guitar on the first Youth of Today record, he sang for the legendary Underdog and is the singer for Into Another. Richie Birkenhead has been around the hardcore scene for decades. I met him at his office which is about 2 blocks from Ground Zero. A very smart guy who, in his own words is, "just a middle aged man trying to navigate through life in a very strange time". We discuss his hardcore roots, his decision a long time ago to go vegan, and carry all the way up to "Into Another" playing this years "This is Hardcore" festival, which unfortunately they recently had to cancel due to an unforeseen medical condition. This gets a bit political but not too much. I happened to agree with the majority of what he says. Much respect and as always... thanks for the support and for listening. Enjoy.

Walter Schreifels and Arthur Smilios are most well known for being founding members of the late 80’s NYHC band Gorilla Biscuits, but that is just the tip of the iceberg in regards to their musical histories. While in Gorilla Biscuits, Walter was also in Youth of Today and Warzone. As the 90’s crept in, he formed Quicksand with members of other NYHC bands such as Beyond, Burn and Collapse and along with Into Another and Orange 9mm forged a ‘post-core’ scene within the early part of the decade. In the 2000’s, Schreifels had the bands Rival Schools and Walking Concert. Working from the same pool of musicians he knew from the NYHC scene, these bands featured members of Youth of Today and Bold. Walter’s current bands include the psychedelic rock band Dead Heavens and Vanishing Life, a band also featuring members of Rise Against and ..And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead. Arthur Smilios was a member of the NYHC bands Token Entry and Underdog as well as Gorilla Biscuits. He was a member of CIV in the 90’s, who brought Hardcore to a new audience via videos on MTV and opening for Kiss. In the present day, besides playing in the reformed version of Gorilla Biscuits, Smilios plays in World Be Free, a band featuring members of Judge, Youth of Today, Strife and Terror.
