Trick or Treat (1986) Synopsis: Eddie Weinbauer, a high school outcast and heavy metal fan, discovers that his favorite rock star, Sammi Curr, has died in a mysterious fire. When he plays one of Curr's unreleased albums backward, he unwittingly resurrects the rocker as a supernatural force seeking revenge. Soundtrack: The soundtrack features Fastway, a British rock band that composed most of the music for the film, giving it an authentic 80s heavy metal vibe. Background: This cult classic explores themes of rebellion and the "Satanic Panic" of the 1980s, with cameo appearances by rock icons Ozzy Osbourne (playing a conservative talk show host) and Gene Simmons. 2. Queen of the Damned (2002) Synopsis: Based on Anne Rice's novel, this film follows vampire Lestat, who awakens from slumber to become a rock star, attracting the attention of other vampires and the ancient Queen Akasha, who wishes to rule alongside him. Their curiosity leads them into the lair of the Firefly family, where terror and madness unfold. Soundtrack: The soundtrack, curated by director Rob Zombie, includes songs by Zombie himself along with Buck Owens and The Ramones, adding a gritty, Southern rock vibe. Background: Rob Zombie's directorial debut is heavily influenced by grindhouse films and 1970s horror. The music complements its chaotic and disturbing tone, with Zombie's own tracks amplifying the twisted atmosphere. 9. Resident Evil (2002) Synopsis: Alice, an amnesiac security operative, teams up with a group of commandos to investigate a deadly virus outbreak in a high-tech facility known as The Hive. Their mission pits them against reanimated corpses and mutated creatures. Soundtrack: The soundtrack features Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, and Coal Chamber, creating an industrial, high-energy backdrop for the action-horror elements. Background: Known for its intense action sequences and blend of horror with sci-fi, the soundtrack's industrial metal sound contributes to the futuristic, menacing feel of the film. 10. Dracula 2000 (2000) Synopsis: In this modern adaptation, Dracula is accidentally revived in New Orleans, where he targets the daughter of the man who once tried to contain him. The story intertwines classic vampire lore with contemporary themes. Soundtrack: Featuring bands like Pantera, Slayer, System of a Down, and Linkin Park, the soundtrack is heavy with rock and metal tracks. Ever wondered what happens when a horror film flips the script and turns into a comedy of errors? Join us as we unpack "Tucker and Dale vs. Evil," a movie that hilariously twists slasher tropes into a bloody comedy goldmine. You'll learn why two seemingly typical hillbillies, Tucker and Dale, have become the unlikely heroes of a cult classic through a series of misunderstood mishaps. From Eli Craig's clever direction to the film's unique charm, we promise you'll never look at horror the same way again.Expect plenty of laughs as we recount our initial misconceptions about this movie and how it caught us off guard with its mix of cringe-worthy yet lovable moments. Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine shine as the titular characters, bringing a fresh and light-hearted twist to horror that's right up there with "Zombieland" and "Shaun of the Dead." We dive into how the film handles themes of prejudice and misunderstanding, and why it stands out in a genre full of jump scares and gore. Our discussion takes a turn towards the greater horror landscape, exploring where horror-comedy fits in alongside genre staples like "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Scream." We wrap up with our personal ratings for "Tucker and Dale vs. Evil," assessing its parody prowess and its place within our series of reviews. Letterbox'd Synopsis: Two hillbillies are suspected of being killers by a group of paranoid college kids camping near the duo's West Virginian cabin. As the body count climbs, so does the fear and confusion as the college kids try to seek revenge against the pair.

CardioNerds Rounds Co-Chair, Dr. Karan Desai, joins Dr. Michelle Kittleson (Director of Postgraduate Education in Heart Failure and Transplantation, Director of Heart Failure Research, and Professor of Medicine at the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai) to discuss challenging cases of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. As a guideline author on the 2020 ACC/AHA Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Guidelines, Dr. Kittleson shows us how the latest evidence informs our management of HCM patients, while sharing many #Kittlesonrules and pearls on clinical care. Show notes - Hypertrophic Cardiomyopaty Cases Case #1 Synopsis: Two non-white brothers in their early 20s come to clinic to establish care. They have no cardiopulmonary symptoms, normal EKGs and normal echos, but there was a possible family history of HCM. Their mother had LV hypertrophy and underwent septal myectomy, but she could not afford genetic testing and was no longer in the patients' lives. The path report suggested “myocyte hypertrophy without disarray or bundles of myocytes.” How would you advise these patients regarding screening and surveillance? Listen to #CardsRounds for the full details!  Quotes from Case #1: “Let's take a walk down memory lane and let's get to our evolution of understanding hypertrophic cardiomyopathy… [our understanding] follows the parable of the six blind men and the elephant. Each of the six blind man approached it from different angles, its tusk, its ear, its tail, and they all try to convince each other what an elephant is … because none of them can see the big picture.” Dr. Kittleson on the history of HCM and coming to a unifying diagnosis  “The next time you are sitting there mashing your teeth because you have to memorize what the HCM murmur does squat to stand, Valsalva, or handgrip … remember you are standing on the shoulder of Giants. They [Drs. Braunwald and Morrow] pioneered surgical myectomy based on physical exam and cath lab findings” Dr. Kittleson on the physical exam guiding HCM management Takeaways from Case #1 Before we round, we think it is important to get on the same page regarding the nomenclature around HCM. Since the original characterization of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) more than 60 years ago (see the Braunwald Chronicles for the origin stories!), different terms have been used to describe the disease. These include idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis, hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HoCM), and “burnt out HCM” when heart failure develops. The 2020 guideline committee recommended a common language to avoid confusion: since left ventricular (LV) outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO) occurs in >60% of patients over time, but one-third remain non-obstructive, the recommendation is t0 call the disease state HCM with or without outflow tract obstruction.Dr. Kittleson added that when heart failure develops we should characterize the pathology as HCM with heart failure rather than “burnt out HCM.”  Do we use HCM to describe any LV that has thick walls? Some clinicians will use HCM to describe all disease states that can...

Shane Black is a name that tends to elicit either unbridled enthusiasm or consternation from moviegoers. Black started out as an actor before hitting it big as the legendary screenwriter of Lethal Weapon. Then in 2005, he made the leap to directing his own scripts. And this episode, Thomas Greene of Movies After Work joins us to discuss Black's directorial debut, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang stars a pre-Iron Man Robert Downey Jr., a post-Batman Val Kilmer, and a star-making turn by Michelle Monaghan. The film's blend of noir subject matter and buddy cop energy turned it into a cult classic for some, despite its box office underperformance. But Thomas and I will delve into how it was a pivotal movie for not only those involved but him as well. We'll discuss how accurately Black captures the Los Angeles scene, why the movie impacted Thomas' own writing, and which of the movie's three lead performances ultimately steals the movie. SYNOPSIS Two-bit crook Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr.) stumbles into an audition for a mystery film while on the run from the cops. Winning the part, he lands in Hollywood, where he's flung into a tangled, murderous conspiracy with his childhood sweetheart, Harmony Lane (Michelle Monaghan), and hard-boiled private eye Perry van Shrike (Val Kilmer). Child's Play is the simple story of a boy and his favorite doll, albeit one imbued with the soul of a notorious serial killer. But with Chucky (voiced by Brad Dourif) destroyed, where could a sequel go? 1990's Child's Play 2 answers that question with a more traditional approach to continuing the original film's story. But does it keep the series' momentum going? In the second episode of our Child's Play/Chucky mega-series, Kevin Smith of MST3K Motivation addresses whether director John Lafia's sequel does justice to Andy (Alex Vincent) and Chucky's story from the original film. We'll discuss how Child's Play 2 ratchets up the comedy and gore, the introduction of Christine Elise as Kyle, and that finale at the toy factory. Child's Play 2 might not boast the novelty of its predecessor. But is this a classic horror sequel or the first misfire on Chucky's big-screen resume? Listen in as we continue down the road of the Child's Play franchise. Playtime is officially back in session. SYNOPSIS Two years after serial killer Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) inserted his soul into a Chucky doll, a toy company attempts to recreate the doll, bringing Ray back in the process. The possessed doll -- intent on claiming a human body -- kills his way toward former owner Andy (Alex Vincent), who now lives in a foster home. Andy's foster sister, Kyle (Christine Elise), tries to protect him, but his foster parents believe Andy is just a troubled kid -- and Chucky's murderous path continues. Think Daughters of Darkness and Dark Shadows. That's what came to my mind when I watched Mickey Reece's Climate of the Hunter. Part brooding horror film, part vampire flick, this indie project combines a lot of 1970s nostalgia while also challenging the audience. Is everything as it seems? Is there something truly sinister at work here? We chatted with the film's director Mickey Reece about his inspirations and making a period piece in the current age. Check it out below. Climate of the Hunter is currently available on-demand. Synopsis: Two sisters, Alma and Elizabeth, along with a dog who’s described as a “philosopher,” have come to Alma’s remote house to reconnect with Wesley after twenty years. Alma is recently divorced, Elizabeth is a workaholic in Washington, D.C., while Wesley lives in Paris dealing with a wife recently struck with a fatal disease. When the three come together for dinner it has all the makings of a lovely adult melodrama about loneliness, and the desire to connect and share our lives with someone… but we must add to the mix one otherworldly piece of information: Wesley could be a vampire. #interview #indie #vampire
