Have you ever felt the transformative power of a familiar melody transporting you back to a cherished memory? My guest today is Stephen Hunt, he is the CEO and co-founder of Music Health, a company that brilliantly interweaves technology with music. Stephen shares how music can be a beacon of hope and connection, especially for those living with dementia. Stephen's journey into this mission began with a personal passion for music. From childhood aspirations of becoming a musician to the altruistic goal of pursuing music as a therapeutic tool. Music Health's trailblazing product, Vera, is making waves internationally. The foundation of the Vera music app is deeply rooted in a personal story as Stephen's grandfather had Alzheimers. The lived experience and the observed challenges fueled the desire to create a solution that could make a difference in the lives of those living with dementia and their caregivers. This app employs AI technologies to delve deep into the tapestry of memory, retrieving invaluable moments from the past encoded in the songs that once stirred our emotions. With its recent launch in several nations, including Australia, Canada, and the US, Vera is on a mission not just to play songs, but to rejuvenate forgotten memories and touch the core of the human spirit, especially for those navigating the challenges of dementia. Stephen shares the vision of 'tech with purpose', which is redefining the paradigm of music therapy. Today, we talk about the science behind this innovation, the anthropological history of music as a healing agent, and the app's tangible impact on its users as it's incorporated into daily life and can elevate the care experience. This provides meaningful benefits for both the recipient and the caregivers. Stephen shares how there has been great success working with professional caregivers in assisted living and aged care homes along with at-home caregivers. Music is powerful, it is meaningful, it offers moments of joy, memory and connection. Thank you, Stephen, for sharing the transformative power of music with us all. At first blush, it might seem obvious that praise is a good thing. It involves complimenting others on what they have done; it tends to make them feel good; and it's a way for us to communicate insights about virtuous behaviour. But dig a little deeper and things are not always as they seem. Take an example from almost three years ago. A bright moment for many people in the first Covid lockdown was the weekly ‘clap for carers', instigated to praise and give thanks to NHS workers and others who were on the frontline of the battle against the disease. But the weekly claps went sour. Many of the intended recipients of the praise came to resent them.So what was going on here? What makes praise sometimes inappropriate or wrong? These are some of the questions at the heart of the research of Hannah McHugh, a political philosopher currently completing her PhD in the UCL Department of Political Science. Long-time podcast listeners may remember that Hannah joined us last year to explore another aspect of her work: the role of blame in politics. We are delighted that Hannah joins us again, this time to discuss the role of praise. Mentioned in this episode:I'm not your inspiration, thank you very much. Stella Young. TEDxSydney

Etta is the founder of Lactamo, a corporate lawyer, and Mum of 4 young children. In 2019 following her own struggles with breastfeeding, Etta recognised that despite the importance of breastfeeding, rates worldwide were disappointingly low. UNICEF reported that “No country in the world meets the recommended standards for breastfeeding”. Etta was disappointed with the lack of products to help Mums. It's a global problem and Etta had a simple and scalable solution, with IP protection. So, Etta founded Lactamo. Lactamo is a specialised ball specifically developed and designed for the elasticity of lactating breast tissue, which has the ability to address all of the common breastfeeding problems. Lactamo was the winner of the Australian MedTech Actuator Award (covering Australia and India) in December 2019, the recipient of a grant from the NSW State Government in 2020, was announced by St George as Australia's "Best New Business Idea 2020" (TEDxSydney), and Etta was announced recently by Women's Agenda as “Emerging Entreprenuer 2021” Finalist. Lactamo was selected by the NSW Government to be a part of the Going Global Program for expansion into both China and India. Really excitingly, Lactamo has just completed a successful clinical trial with Deakin University and the Western Health Partnership. Which was so successful that it has been nominated for the most prestigious award in breastfeeding. Lactamo will be launching on 1st August – which is also the start of World Breastfeeding Week FREE ONLINE EVENT THURSDAY 15TH JULY 8.00PM on Respiratory illness, immunity in winter as mummas, feeling confident with your health in this climate with Dietician Marieke Rodenstein. She explains how she learned to navigate the world as a disabled woman, and how it's opened the door to competitive climbing. As a top athlete, she knows people look up to her as a role model, but she is uncomfortable with being called 'an inspiration' just because of her disability. Amy Zayed is a music journalist and broadcaster based in Cologne. She was born blind in a family of Egyptian migrants who had just relocated to the German countryside, so she grew up knowing she was perceived as ‘different'. She talks about building a career with - and not 'despite' - her disability, and why people's discomfort with difference can be harmful. Nadine Champion is a Thai Boxing and Kickboxing Champion. Now, I’ll be the first to admit I don’t have any interest, whatsoever, in martial arts (and I tell Nadine this early in our conversation). But this isn’t a conversation about martial arts. It’s a conversation about a normal woman with big dreams trying to find a way through her fear and self-doubt, realising she was seeking approval and validation from her Sensei because she didn’t believe she was ‘enough’ and who (in order to achieve her goals inside the ring) had to confront the reality of who she was outside the ring. These days, Nadine is a professional speaker after her talk at TEDx Sydney talk in 2015 (also, her first-ever public speaking gig) produced a standing ovation and has since been described as one of the most memorable TEDxTalks of all time. Nadine is also the author of a book called “10 Seconds of Courage”. It’s a very real, raw, emotional and honest account of Nadine’s career as a kickboxer, her battle with cancer and her experience of letting her guard down (for once) when she walked onto the TEDxSydney stage. "Virtual reality is almost the perfect metaphor for psychosis. You know you're in the room but what you're seeing and believing is so different.” This week's guest on The Possibility Club is technology and health pioneer Sarah Ticho. Sarah Ticho has spent her career working across the interdisciplinary arts, academia, healthcare and technology as a producer, curator, artist and researcher. She graduated from the University of Kent with a First Class Honours BSc in Anthropology, with a year in Japan . Following her degree, she worked with the NHS before moving into contemporary art, worked with organisations including Fabrica Gallery and Lighthouse, Brighton. In 2016 she moved to Australia where she worked with The School of Life, TEDxSydney. It was here she began working in VR and joined The Big Anxiety Festival as a Researcher, VR Curator and “Awkward Conversationalist”. In 2017 she moved to the US and became a research assistant at Stanford University, California, investigating the cross-cultural sensory experience of communicating with God. She moved back to the UK and founded Hatsumi in May 2018. Alongside her role with Hatsumi, she is the producer on Deep, a meditative VR experience controlled by breathing, and is the healthcare lead for Immerse UK. Richard Freeman and Sarah spoke in June 2019 about her career and lived experiences, the role of tech in the future of health diagnosis and whether virtual reality really is the 'empathy machine'. --- Useful links: Preston Park Rose Garden https://www.mybrightonandhove.org.uk/places/placepark/preston-park/preston-park-21 Hatsumi VR https://www.hatsumivr.com/ Hatsumi presents Noosphere at TomTech's VR Lab, 2018 https://www.vrfocus.com/2018/08/hatsumi-vr-presents-noosphere-mindfulness-in-a-hyper-connected-world-at-the-brighton-digital-festival/ Sarah talks Immerse UK on Knowledge Transfer Network https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8b19zEoM_Ik Fabrica Gallery https://www.fabrica.org.uk/ Lighthouse, Brighton http://www.lighthouse.org.uk/ TEDx Sydney https://tedxsydney.com/ The Big Anxiety Festival, Australia https://www.thebiganxiety.org/ Sarah on StoryHackXR podcast, spring 2019 https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/6-myra-appannah-somnai-sarah-ticho-hatsumi-vr/id1435531214?i=1000424884756 Deep VR http://www.exploredeep.com/ The Verge on Oculus Quest https://www.theverge.com/2019/9/27/20885082/oculus-quest-home-headset-lineup-oc6

In 2006 Michelle Leonard founded a children's choir called Moorambilla Voices. Since that time the program has brought together more than 20,000 students from 100 schools, between the ages of 8 to 18. Over a third of the kids are Indigenous, and many come from remote or disadvantaged backgrounds. Producer Cinnamon Nippard went to a Moorambilla Voices performance at TEDxSydney this year, and found out more about this incredible program.
Fenella Kernebone is the Head of Curation for TEDxSydney, responsible for leading the programming for what has become one of the most significant TEDx events in the world. She also curates the youth program, TEDxYouth@Sydney and TEDxSydney Salons. Fenella manages a team of over 20 curators and producers dedicated to spreading great ideas and strong stories in fields including science, technology, arts, business, and design. Fenella is also a noted television and radio presenter and producer, MC, interviewer and writer with a distinguished career working in arts, music, design, and culture. She started as the host for the TEDxSydney Livestream for three years before becoming Head of Curation. She’s one of 250 volunteers at this massive event. This episode is perfect for any organizer who’s deeply involved in curation, as she goes into all the tips and tricks, as well as how to manage the process in depth. This episode is a must listen for anyone that’s trying to figure out where to find speakers, and how to keep getting amazing speakers year over year. I was particularly keen on learning about their FAST IDEAS concept. All attendees are encouraged to participate and get their idea on stage. There’s a separate team that works with them to get to 8-10 finalists who get a thirty-second spot on the red circle, with the audience voting by applause for who the winner is.

Remo Giuffre, the original licensee of TEDxSydney, has the envious position of curating one of the most widely respected TEDx events in the world. TEDx organizers who've been on the show in the past say it's the single event they'd love to attend. Remo was at one of the original TED events in Kobe, Japan and is celebrating his 25th year as a TEDster. In 2010 he produced one of the first TEDx events and has since gone on to create an extremely high-end event with state of the art production values. He will be the first to tell you it's all about the team and delegating everything. He's doubled the size of the event since moving from the Sydney Opera House to 4,200 attendees. They do so much innovation; I don't want to spoil the surprises by writing about them; you'll want to listen to this episode a couple of times. I've gotten several incredible ideas from this conversation as I expect you will too. Remo says working on TEDxSydney is a rite of passage for the team, and now, seven years since they started, team members have gone on to do some amazing work, using skills learned at TEDxSydney.
Gavin Blake is a visual scribe, a graphic illustrator, and a significant value-add to over 50 TEDx events around the world. His ability to synthesize a talk, in real time, and convert the ideas into an image is impressive. He's been doing this work for 17 years when he started scribing floor-to-ceiling whiteboards at Ernst and Young. We were introduced to Gavin by the lovely folks at TEDxCanberra and soon learned he's recently worked with TEDxSydney, and if you follow him on Twitter, you can keep track of where he's at on any given weekend. He's figured out a workflow that lets him stay at his home in Australia, and listen to live streams of TEDx events. He draws what he hears, passes the image off to his ink and painter collaborator, who then gives it to someone on the team who pushes the image out to social media. The TEDx speaker then has a published image that reflects their talk within 30-minutes of them finishing. His work has boosted lives stream participation by calling attention to the talks through innovative visuals.
"Rhetoric - what is it and how do we explain it? This episode unpacks and discusses a contemporary notion of rhetoric, and the overall effect such language can have in certain situations. With the help of Dr Howie Manns and Dr Louisa Willoughby, both linguists from Monash University, we start to build a picture of the intention, effectiveness and structure of rhetoric." | Further resources: Rapp, Christof, "Aristotle's Rhetoric", The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (Spring 2010 Edition), Edward N. TED is a US based not-for-profit enterprise devoted to the propagation of Ideas Worth Spreading. TED started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment and Design. TedxSydney was a Sydney-based TED event, bringing people together to share a TED-like experience. I ducked out to Carriage Works to catch some of the event, and you can see all the talks over at the TedxSydney youtube channel. Many of these talks were science based, so I'm going to put up some of my favourites over the next few posts. The following video is from Bryan Gaensler, former Young Australian of the Year, NASA Hubble Fellow and Harvard professor, Australian Laureate Fellow at The University of Sydney, and Director of the Centre of Excellence for All-sky Astrophysics. His talk was entitled A new way of looking at the sky.Ted Copyright TEDTalks are distributed under a Creative Commons (CC) license.
