Jimmy has been uniting comedy and social service for a long time. When you go to his website https://jimmytingle.com/ you see all these shows that are coming up, but they're not at comedy clubs. They're benefits for different community organizations that help people. And his array of shows and credits are unique. There just aren't a lot of comics who've given a commencement speech at Harvard, run for Lieutenant Governor of Mass, hosted 60 Minutes II and done stand-up with nobel prize winner Desmond Tutu. Now, he has a new podcast and a service that does live and virtual fundraisers for all kinds of non-profits and social causes. We talk about all kinds of issues, and looking at how Trump got elected; simple three word messages delivered by an entertainer. Drain The Swamp, Build The Wall, Make America Great. So he thought if an entertainer can use those simple three word statements, how about “House the homeless”, “feed the hungry,” “heal the sick,” “welcome the stranger,” this is the message of America. There is a theme throughout the show of having a purpose and in Jimmy's case, combining comedy with having a purpose. Also on the show, Jennifer and I talk about perfectionism and it's connection to organization and time management, also procrastination. And since my name is Crasnick, I procrasnickate, which is the process of putting off being myself. I brought all these topics up “for a friend".” I can't relate to them, but I've heard of it through others. Back to Jimmy, he also shares a story about a time in his life where he was drinking and he was reaching out to all these places, and call after call, they turned him away, no beds, not the right insurance and finally saying I need help and the person on the line saying “you came to the right place.” Listen and watch Jimmy's podcast https://jimmytingle.com/podcasts/ and find all of Jennifer's great work here https://connectedparenting.com/ and subscribe, or any word that rhymes with that. Find us everywhere you get your podcasts, write a review, or answer this week's question; what is something that you wish you knew as a kid? You can write to ed@makelightmedia.com and we will shout it out on the show. Take care, and live it up.

Sue Costello is someone I saw early on in Boston, specifically playing a show organized by Jimmy Tingle that featured Costello, Patrice Oneal, and Steve Sweeney. She has always been tough, and she wears her Dorchester roots with pride. We got into some thorny topics here, including pervasive sexism in the entertainment industry and her dealings with CBS as the Les Moonves scandal was breaking. She has survived sexism in comedy and in the television industry and come out of it trying to find a way to get people to communicate more productively, to get to a truth. As she says, the empaths need to grow some balls, because the bullies are winning.   That's part of the philosophy behind her new talk show pilot, Simmah Down with Sue Costello. She wants people to be real about the ugly things in their lives and not be afraid to talk about them. The show is in a pilot stage now, but it's up on YouTube now. Watch it here: You can keep up to date on news from Costello at www.suecostello.com, and find her on Twitter and Facebook under Sue Costello and Instagram under iamsuecostello. She's also filming a new movie called Mow, which you can find on the social medias on @mowmovie.    Our featured track this week is “Living Rock” from Rebecca Turner, from her upcoming album The New Wrong Way, out November 6. This will be Turner's third album, and her first since 2009's Slowpoke. Since then, she has continue to write and play, but family and work concerns kept her from finishing a new album. The New Wrong Way is a culmination of ten years of writing and tweaking the songs, which were recorded starting last winter. The featured track is the opening song from the album, a riffy roots-rock tune called “Living Rock.” Find out more about Rebecca Turner at https://rebeccaturner.net.

Jimmy Tingle is one of the first people I interviewed in the Boston comedy scene years ago. He was hosting and producing a stand-up show on race relations that featured, among others, Patrice O'Neal and Sue Costello. During my twenty years covering this scene, Tingle has always been a community-minded guy, whether it's been as a theater owner for five years or his Humor for Humanity comedy benefit shows. So it wasn't a surprise when he declared his candidacy for Lt. Governor of Massachusetts in the Democratic primary last year. He eventually lost, but garnered 41.3 percent of the vote as a first-time candidate in the primary. His new show, 20/20 Vision, recounts his campaign, surreal moments like having Matt Damon and Paula Poundstone record robocalls on his behalf, and presents some of his out-of-the-box ideas, like using exercise bikes as a power source or windmills near highways to power traffic lights. Tingle is a political comedian, but he's never been a fire-breathing, tear-it-all-down satirist. He's always been optimistic and upbeat. It is no easy feat to look at the divisions in this country and offer optimistic solutions. I sat down with Tingle in the Podcast Kitchen and asked him how he remains so hopeful, the one time I ever saw him get angry in a political discussion, about his early days in the Boston and New York comedy scenes, about the campaign, how recovery inspired his political bid, how he believes in government, his cameo on VEEP, and a lot more. You can find out more about where he's going to be and what he's up to at jimmytingle.com I am very pleased to present you with this week's featured tracks, excerpts from the audiobook of Nathan Ballingrud's latest collection, Wounds: Six Stories from the Border of Hell. Ballingrud has a remarkable imagination and a delicious vocabulary. Take the subtitle seriously – these are lovingly rendered tales of the horrific. Severed heads with lolling tongues that induce a feeling of violence in anyone around them. Angels who tear apart their hosts to be born into this world. And child-eating ghouls. About that last one. You may have heard rumors about Jonathan Wormcake. About how he and his friends attacked the Cold Water Fair in 1914, what he does up there in that mansion, about how the children are drawn there by ghastly visions. Maybe some of it is true, but Wormcake is dying, and he'd like to set the record straight on a few myths about ghouls and how the Skullpocket Fair came to be before he goes. And that brings us to the beginning of “Skullpocket,” one of the six stories in Wounds. You can find him at nathanballingrud.com or on Twitter under @nallingrud. He'll be a guest on the podcast next week Audio excerpts courtesy of Simon & Schuster Audio from “Skullpocket”, read by Danny Campbell in the compilation WOUNDS by Nathan Ballingrud. Such acts as Steven Wright, Paula Poundstone, Bobcat Goldthwait, Kevin Meaney, Jimmy Tingle and many, many others cut their comedic teeth in the rooms Crimmins started at shows he produced. As the years went on, he became an activist of sorts, travelling to Nicaragua to perform political satire about the U.S. government and the Contras. The brilliant, multi-talented Barry Crimmins is also an actor, known for The Young Comedians All-Star Reunion (1986) When Stand Up Stood Out (2003), and Call Me Lucky (2015) which documents in detail his traumatic early childhood experiences of being raped my a next door neighbor in the basement of his own home. Crimmin's satirical writing and comedy routines have focused through the years on the need for political and social change. Crimmins received the "Peace Leadership Award" in 1991 from Boston Mobilization for Survival. The award was presented by Noam Chomsky. Additionally, he was honored by Community Works with the "Artist for Social Change Award" for his years of activism. In 1994, Howard Zinn presented Barry Crimmins along with Maya Angelou "The Courage of Conscience Award" from Wellesley College and the Life Experience School at the Peace Abbey in Sherborn, Massachusetts. Barry's friend Howard Zinn did the presenting that day. His work as an activist, journalist and performer has taken him everywhere from the American campaign trail to war zones in Central America to Camp Casey on the perimeter of the George W. Bush compound in Craw-Ford, Texas. On June 4, 2016, Barry shot an hour special in Lawrence, Kansas for Louis C.K.'s Pig Newton Productions. Barry is a true American comedy legend who never rests on his laurels, instead building each performance on a lifetime of remarkable experiences and a comic mind that has made him into the one-of-a-kind comic you really need to see.

Former Air America radio writer and correspondent (2003-2006), social justice activist, internationally renowned political satirist and author of the acclaimed seven stories press book 'Never Shake Hands with a War Criminal' helped bring the Boston comedy scene into the modern age when he founded two of Boston's most fabled clubs: The Ding Ho and Stitches.

Jimmy Tingle is a political comedy beast! One of the finest examples of the quality comedy that has come out of Boston and he is also a recent Harvard University graduate. I remember seeing Jimmy busting heads on comedy shows when I was a youngster studying all things comedy and that is why it is my pleasure to present to you now the one and only Jimmy Tingle!

Yes, it is I – Marc Hershon – your host and 100% recyclable container for Epi 127 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. We’re back to the clippage this time, with a fully loaded Succotash Clips show. We’ve got a full rack of comedy podcast clips ready to roll, from the Bertcast, BrianTALKS, Buffet Kings, Now That I’m Older, Push The Button, Rick & Paul Heal The World, Screams & Moans, Sup Doc, Wicked Theory, and You Made It Weird. We’ve also got a double dose of our Burst O’ Durst segment with our resident political comic, correspeondent, and commentator Will Durst, plus a classic spot from our sponsor, Henderson's Pants. THE CLIPS BertcastOur Associate Producer Tyson Saner clipped us off a chunk of the Bertcast, hosted by comedian Bert Kreischer. Bert’s a funny guy and I love his appearances on Doug Loves Movies, especially when that insane laugh of his get going, all girlish and giggly. He tours the comedy clubs a lot but he also cranks out the episodes. This is from back in December, Epi150, when he had comedian Jimmy Tingle on the ‘cast. Now That I’m OlderAnother clip from Tyson’s harvest comes to us from the Now That I’m Older podcast, hosted by Ken Baldwin and Shane Smith. The general premise for the show is that getting older sucks but can also be awesome at the same time. The two host like to poke fun – at the world at large as well as each other. And they occasionally review movies. The clippage is from Epi47 from December, and features Shane going off on the worst part of his telemarketing job. Sup DocI think I mentioned the title of this next podcast we’re featuring when it first came out, for two reasons. The first is that one of the co-hosts, Paco Romane, is a comedian and actor in San Francisco whom I happen to know. The second reason is the close connection our shows’ titles have – ours, of course, is Succotash, as in “Sufferin’ succotash”, the catchphrase of Warner Brothers’ cartoon cat, Sylvester. Paco and his compadre in podcasting, George Chen, run Sup Doc, which may sound a lot like Bugs Bunny’s “What’s up, doc?” tagline. Like our show, theirs has nothing to do with those characters. Sup Doc is a podcast that looks at film documentaries. I’ve been hanging onto this clip for a few months because I wanted to see the film they were talking about first, which is Going Clear, the somewhat chilling doc about Scientology. Their guest in this show, Epi16, is Jamie DeWolf, who is also the great-grandson of none other than Scientology’s founder, L. Ron Hubbard. You Made It WeirdNext episode we’ll feature our live recording made at The Improv in Los Angeles, featuring Dana Carvey among other guests. Tyson clipped an episode of Pete Holmes’ You Made It Weird from the end of December 2014 that featured Mr. Carvey in a long episode. In this snippet, Dana thinks on Lorne Michaels and also Paul McCartney in the year before SNL’s 40th anniversary. BryanTALKSI first learned of the BryanTALKS podcast from a note that host Bryan Cain-Jackson dropped into the Tweetsack. (By note I mean “tweet” and by “Tweetsack” I mean “Tweetsack”.) He wanted to know if I’d had a chance to check out his brand new podcast, which I hadn’t. But I did after that and I liked what I heard! Part sketch, part news, part reaction to the news, and interviews makes for a well-rounded show with a decent sound. Bryan seems to be connected – this clip comes from his recent episode, where he was hanging on the set with the entire cast of NBC’s show Undateable. Rick & Paul Heal The World, A Comedy PodcastThanks to our man Tyson, we have a clip from a podcast called Rick & Paul Heal The World. Sounds like a tall order. I can’t find the last names of these guys anywhere, which certainly limited their liability if they DON’T end up healing the world. Just to get you back in the holiday mood, this clip is from just before last Christmas where Rick & Paul explore the pain and misery of holiday shopping. Screams & Moans I wanted to play a clip from a podcast by a longtime supporter and friend-of-Succotash, Megan Moen. I only knew her by her Twitter handle for a long time, @podcastwhore, but it’s already been two years since she kicked off her Screams & Moans podcast. So congrats, Megan! Her guest in her 36th episode is Wayne Baglin, whose own podcast, The Crunch Time Show, is — I think — in the Podcast Graveyard, but who was also an inspiration to her getting started. Buffet KingsWe got a note to check out a show from Adelaide, Australia, called The Buffet Kings. So of course we did. Byt their pictures on the SoundCloud page for this show, the three hosts — Matt O’Brien, Matt Rix, and Luke Verharen — are are “gentlemen of proportion” (to use a phrase a tailor once used on me when fitting me for a tuxedo.) This clip is from their second episode, where they obviously feel they are in a position to chat about how funny can directly translate to body mass…or not. Push The ButtonAssociate producer Tyson Saner clipped off a bit of the Push The Button podcast, hosted by David Vox Mullen and Mr. Anderson. They chat it up about a bunch of different things and, in this clip, they’re talking about the bru-ha-ha that kicked up this past holiday season over Starbucks changing the design of their holiday cups. Wicked TheoryOne of our awesome Twitter supporters is Bill Sweeney, one of the hosts and the producer of the Wicked Theory podcast. So I thought it was high time we played a clip from a recent episode. He’s joined by his buddy Dom, his brother Bob and NOT by his buddy Ed, who called in sick. The Wicked Theory guys cover a lot of shows and movies and comics and stuff in every episode, so they’re packed with nerdy goodness. Or goody nerdness. That’s going to put the bow on this edition of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. If you have any desire to help a brother out, there are 99 things wrong with our website but our Donate button isn’t one of them. Works just fine. As does our Amazon banner at the top of the page. Click that sucker, buy something on Amazon, the world’s largest anything store, and we get a tasty kickback. Or buy yourself a Succo-t-shirt, mug or other gewgaw at the Succotashery, easily accessible at the aforementioned http://SuccotashShow.com. — Marc Hershon P.S. I want to leave you with a reminder that our very next episode is not just a Succotash Chats installment, but it was recorded live at the Improv in Los Angeles. Our guests were Dana Carvey, his sons Dex and Tom, and Wayne Federman. Our announcer Bill Heywatt even made the trek to LA along with me to be at The Comedy Lab in West Hollywood.
