In this week's short-and-sweet podcast episode, The Matts discuss Adam MacDonald's Out Come The Wolves. It's a bit like Backcountry 2.0, except instead of a bear, it's a pack of hungry wolves. MacDonald's making a name as a wilderness horror director, which neither Certified Forgotten host sees as an issue. What do we think will be MacDonald's next animal of choice? Surely he'll at least complete a trilogy of "When Animals Attack" indies.
PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Adam MacDonald (BACKCOUNTRY, PYEWACKET, SLASHER) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss the making of his new feature OUT COME THE WOLVES (in theaters now). From the genesis of the “third wheel” concept and the collaborative development that became the OUT COME THE WOLVES screenplay… to the importance of having three dimensional characters in order to make the thrills actually matter… to how the film's sound design was crafted and how he used selective focus to create tension and dread… to what it was like meeting the film's wolves for the first time… to how bringing crew members that he worked with on the TV series SLASHER helped him pull off the film on a mere 16 day shoot… to how he became the voice of “John Carver” in Eli Roth's THANKSGIVING… Adam takes us deep into the woods and deep behind the scenes of his new survival thriller. Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a listener who feels like he is watching his kids grow up too fast and the two Adams geek out hard about their experiences working with wolves.
This week on the show, join us for a breakdown of the new Canadian survival horror film Out Come The Wolves, starring Missy Peregrym in her second collaboration with Backcountry director Adam MacDonald. Pyewacket is cool Canadian horror movie about the occult. We dig into themes of monstrous motherhood, grief, and the old "be careful what you wish for" adage. If you love a good scare, this episode is for you! This week on the podcast, our host chats with Adam MacDonald and Katharine Isabelle, two veterans of the horror genre, who call Canada home. Since he was a little boy, Adam MacDonald was captivated by the horror genre. The thrills and chills from classics like The Exorcist and Evil Dead had him wondering how directors figured out the perfect scares. Fast forward to today, Adam is a filmmaker with two features under his belt, his 2015 film Backcountry and his 2017 film Pyewacket. He is also a director on the Netflix series Slasher Solstice. Katherine Isabelle grew up on the gloomy film sets of Vancouver, as she watched her father work as an art director on shows like the X-Files. Since then, her acting career has blown up, and you can catch her in major films like American Mary, Freddy vs. Jason, and in television shows such as Hannibal and The Order on Netflix. Perhaps Katharine is best known for her role as Ginger in the 2000 horror film Ginger Snaps, which is now hailed as a feminist horror classic. So sit down, kick back, and get comfortable (but not too comfortable, because you never know what's lurking in the shadows) and get a behind-the-scenes look at Canadian horror! Hear with my ears and speak with my tongue, I invite you to come. Pyewacket. Grief-ridden teen Leah is trying to find her place after a serious tragedy turned her life upside down. She relies on her circle of friends who all partake in the occult and black magick as a way of coping with their daily tensions. When the kettle in her home life boils over, she foolishly casts a spell calling upon the energy of Pyewacket to fulfill her sinister wish to end her problems indefinitely. Unbeknownst to Leah, someone is listening and is willing to carry out even her most horrible of desires. Pyewacket. Another treasure filmed right here in Ontario, Canadian director Adam Macdonald selected his cast perfectly with Nicole Munez starring as daughter Leah Reyes and our familiar friend 'Mrs. Reyes' from The Walking Dead, Laurie Holden (TWD: Andrea.) Together they create the perfect atmosphere of a dysfunctional family while engaging in a realistic palette of emotions, never letting up the heavy tone for long. Jen and I are certain with the accuracy of the ritual in the film that Adam Macdonald must be a witch. What do you think? Pyewacket. Be careful what you wish for. Someone might be listening. We saw Backcountry on Netflix, and it is an effective enough one-trick pony. Unlike The Ruins movie we reviewed earlier, there are no super-natural elements, the threat is just a plain ol' bear. Check him out on his site as well. https://youtu.be/46uwmzTf5nA Backcountry Synopsis Backcountry is the 2014 story of a woodsy kind of guy named Alex (Jeff Roop) and his urban girlfriend, Jenn (Missy Peregrym), who are heading into the woods for a late-season camping trip. It’s directed and written by Adam MacDonald. Watch Backcountry Watch it on AmazonBackcountry Movie Early in the movie, we meet a Park Ranger (Nicholas Campbell) who warns the couple that they should probably bring a map and look out for inclement weather, but Alex don’t need none of that shit! He’s a man’s man who knows these woods like the back of his country, and he don’t need no stinking map. As the couple heads into the woods they quickly end up with more camping trip than they bargained for. Backcountry Review Backcountry is a one-trick pony that relies on a surprisingly well-grounded theme - The woods are scary, and so are wild animals. Most of the movie left me scratching my head and rewinding to try to make sense of dialog or acting that didn’t seem to fit the situation. Why are they worried about a single snapped tree? Why didn’t the movie make a point of that tree before it was snapped to show the audience that this is certainly out of place? Lots of little details like this made the movie a little frustrating for me. Overall, I do appreciate the simplicity of this movie and its premise and the stakes. It was fun to watch with a friend and plays on a very reliable fear, being alone in the woods at night. Score for Backcountry 6/10 Spoilers for Backcountry Backcountry is a barebones kind of movie. Lots of it is composed of vaguely wandering through the woods, with little to no dialog. There are only four characters in the movie, our two protagonists, the park ranger at the beginning, and Brad in the first third of the movie. Unless you count the bear, I mean. So beware, those are the stakes. Check Out The Big Knife on Brad! After they canoe across the lake and set up camp initially, we meet Brad, a dreamy outdoorsman who starts to chat up Jenn while Alex is off gathering wood. Alex is cagey upon meeting Brad, and this causes a rift in the new relationship. Stupid sexy Brad! Brad shares his fish with the two before doling out his machismo upon Alex. Brad reveals that he is an outdoor guide who is well-versed in the area. He also reveals a huge skinning knife and his disdain for the snap judgment that Alex made on him and his kindness. Brad leaves our couple after dinner, a wink, and a slug of whiskey, which left me extremely uneasy. Humans in the woods are, by far, the scariest thing to me. People represent a very creepy and unreliable X-factor, in a place that’s far away from law and order. Brad is a great addition to the story because he sets up the stakes, which feel alarmingly high for a hike in the woods. The Path Less Traveled As our couple gets on their way, there is a point where Alex chooses the path less traveled. He seems sure of himself, so Jenn follows, and they eventually set up camp. Every night we get to see them sleeping and hear the creepy sounds of the woods. This is effective in all the right ways. Who knows what’s out there? The couple wakes up each day to a campsite that is a little different than they left it. As Alex recognizes the signs that they are almost to the

Lifted from Rotten Tomatoes: When you're dealing with demons, be careful what you wish for... In this ultra-unsettling occult nightmare, teenage Leah (Nicole Muñoz) finds solace from the recent death of her father-and from her strained relationship with her mother (Laurie Holden)--by dabbling in the dark arts. It all seems like harmless fun at first, until a blow out argument leads Leah to do the unthinkable: put a death curse on her mother. No sooner has the girl performed the ritual than she regrets it. But it may be too late, as an evil presence known as Pyewacket begins to make itself known--and threatens to destroy both mother and daughter. Backcountry director Adam MacDonald builds hair-raising tension around what's both a complex mother-daughter tale and a frightening fable about our darkest desires. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Many teenagers live as some sort of rebels. A lot of it comes down to being an adolescent and unable to cope with responsibility, changes, and accountability. Many dress differently, wear interesting hairstyles, or enjoy obscure arts. The new film, Pyewacket, directed by Adam MacDonald, is his follow up of his nature horror film Back Country. Unlike that film, this one is about a broken family, how they cope with the loss of a member, and the turn to darkness by the daughter to the occult. Leah, a teenage girl, has gone all goth since the death of her father. She wears dark clothes, listens to extreme music, and reads all about the occult. Her mother is even in more despair. She continues to be depressed months after the passing. When she packs up herself and Leah to the backwoods to live, Leah is angry being uprooted from her friends. After a fight where words are regretted, Leah runs into the woods and performs a ritual to bring the old English demon Pyewacket to come and kill her mother. Soon strange things begin to happen and she wonders whether her rash actions actually were more than a girl crying for help. Pyewacket, from an old historical account by an English witchfinder general, has remained an interesting part of the witch craze of bygone days. The movie when played at festivals received good vibe and has since been listed by many as one of the better horror films of the early part of 2018. Dark Discussions takes a look at this Canadian horror film and gives their thoughts. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM
Horror in North America seems to be experiencing a renaissance. We have new, innovative perspectives on the genre as demonstrated by films such as The Witch, The Black Coat’s Daughter and The Void. We have two relatively new films to talk about this episode that continue the trend of excellent genre films from North America. Me and Mike take a look at Pyewacket by Canadian director Adam MacDonald who brought us Back Country a couple of years back and the terrifying, gore-soaked fright fest Terrifier by writer / director Damien Leone.

This decision to fight a bear and in this case two bear films fighting each other for our movie amusement has been inspired by the new horror film BACKCOUNTRY. Our own Chris Maynard was a part of a press junket where he got to talk with the film’s writer and director, Adam MacDonald.
