Good Dirt: Conversations with Leaders in Real Estate & Beyond
John Fish is Chairman & CEO of Suffolk, a national real estate enterprise that builds, innovates and invests. Under John's vision and leadership, Suffolk has grown into one of the most successful privately held builders in the United States, with $6 billion in revenue, 2,600 employees, and a value proposition, commitment to innovation and corporate culture that is redefining the built world. Suffolk truly is “America's contractor” and manages some of the most complex, sophisticated projects in the country, serving clients in every major industry sector, including healthcare, life sciences, education, gaming, transportation/aviation, government, mission critical and commercial. With main offices in Boston (headquarters), New York City, Miami, West Palm Beach, Tampa, Estero, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Virginia and Maine, Suffolk is omnipresent in active real estate markets around the country.John is a fixture on numerous Boards focused on economic stability and real estate industry growth. He is the Chair of the Real Estate Roundtable, a non-partisan organization that represents the largest and most successful real estate developers in the country and is the most influential voice in Washington, D.C. for more equitable policies for economic growth.John also serves as Chair of Brigham and Women's Hospital, sits on the Executive Committee of Mass General Brigham, and is the Chair of the Board at Boston College, his second time serving and the first non-alum to ever fulfill that role. In recent years, John has chaired both the Boston Chamber of Commerce and the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, and he is a founding member and director of the Massachusetts Competitive Partnership (MACP).Our conversation with John begins with an overview of the ever-innovating Suffolk, including a discussion around Suffolk's platform verticals which support the core mission of the company. We then take a step back, and hear from John about his academic experiences at Tabor Academy and Bowdoin College, tackling and embracing his dyslexia, and his entry into the construction industry, in which the Fish family had deep roots. We then move onto the formation of Suffolk, the early years and the evolution of the company in its early years as a non-union business. John shares with us candid insights into the challenges and struggles of growing the company in a politically-charged construction environment, and the relationship building that served as a catalyst for long-term growth of the company. We cover a lot of ground outside of Suffolk, and John was generous in sharing his unique perspective on policy, politics, and economic issues at hand today in the US. Finally and maybe most importantly, we discuss John and Cyndy Fish's extraordinary commitment to caring for their community, and their incredible leadership in countless philanthropic endeavors. This was one of our most-requested and highly-anticipated guests, and we sincerely appreciate John sharing his time and insights with us and our Good Dirt audience. We look forward to having him back again! For more information on Suffolk, visit www.suffolk.comTom Greeleyhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/thomasgreeley/tom.greeley@nmrk.comMike Greeleyhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelgreeley1

A slow-motion crisis is unfolding in the global commercial real-estate market, thanks to the double-whammy of higher interest rates and lower demand for office space following the Covid-19 pandemic.John Fish, who is head of the construction firm Suffolk, chair of the Real Estate Roundtable think tank and former chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, joined the What Goes Up podcast to discuss the problems facing the sector and what's being done to help. “The biggest problem right now is the capital markets nationally have frozen,” he says of the US. “And the reason why they've frozen is because nobody understands value. We can't evaluate price discovery because very few assets have traded during this period of time. Nobody understands where bottom is.” One step in the right direction, he says, is recent guidance from federal regulators that allows lenders more flexibility when it comes to borrowers who need to refinance properties.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Zack, John, Jimmy, and Brian round table draft champions, main events, and their in season process.
They say the path to success is never a straight line. The road to get there has many ups and downs and is riddled with challenges along the way. And for those who were born with a disadvantage, the journey becomes even more difficult. John Fish grew up with dyslexia and struggled with reading and writing. In spite of having a learning disability, his football coach saw his potential and took him under his wing. This helped John realize that being dyslexic is not necessarily a barrier to success and that he can actually use it to his advantage. Today, John Fish is chairman and CEO of Suffolk Construction, one of the most successful privately-owned construction management companies in the United States. He is also a philanthropist whose mission is to give back to those who can't help themselves. Let us hear from John, as he shares how having dyslexia led him to discover his characteristics that catapulted him to a high level of success, how his company is using data and technology to disrupt the construction industry, and why he thinks supporting the underprivileged is extremely important. Top Takeaways 14:38 Hacks for people with dyslexia to help absorb things they're reading 16:33 Why running a company is like playing in a football game 21:20 The most essential thing about any business 25:56 The biggest accelerator of Suffolk's growth 31:35 What Vision 2025 is all about 36:15 How to find the most productive workers 36:58 The best way to get ahead in life 40:10 The downside of having equity partners 41:11 Why John believes in giving back 41:50 What are the uses of A.I. and tech in the construction management world? 45:40 What is the ultimate goal in the construction industry? 47:14 What does “winning is not normal” mean? Contact John Fish LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnffish/ www.suffolk.com About the guest John Fish was born and raised in a fourth generation construction family. When he was young, he always struggled in school and realized he was dyslexic. His condition worsened as he went through high school and he only learned to read while he was in ninth grade. When John went to prep school, he met a coach who took him under his wing. He introduced John to a tutor that taught him how to read and write. This allowed John to confront his weaknesses and use them to his advantage. John knew that he wouldn't achieve the level of success that he had if not for the people who helped him. John realized that it's now his turn to give back, so when he turned 28, he started getting involved in boards in different nonprofits. In 1982, John's father lent him some money to start Suffolk. The company began to grow pretty quickly as an organization. They eventually worked in the northeast part of the country, grew to the southeast, and then the southwest. And before the year 2000, Suffolk became almost a 2.5 billion dollar business. By 2017, Suffolk had grown to be one of the country's top construction companies, responsible for several high-profile projects such as Boston's Millennium Tower, Encore Boston Harbor, and The Guitar Hotel in Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood. John's awards include, Boston magazine's #1 most powerful person in Boston in 2012 and 2015, and was #8 on that list in 2020. In addition, he was named the 6th most influential person in Boston philanthropy in 2013. The Boston Globe named him Bostonian of the Year in 2015 and 2018. And Boston Business Journal's also included him in the "POWER 50" list.

Margaret Thompson’s Finding Color in the Darkness is a report from the front lines of the battle against #mentalhealth disorders. Her son, John Fish, is a bright young boy growing up in an average American town, going to school, playing with his brother and walking his dogs on the beach each day. He grows into adolescence and slowly a dark sky seems to settle over him; he is complicated, sensitive and growing more silent every day.Tune in for #MomentswithMarianne show with special guest Margaret B. Thompson as we discuss her new #book Finding Color in the Darkness: Losing My Son to Bipolar Disorder. Margaret Thompson began her career in New York City at MTV. She married and left to raise her two boys, Tim and John, ultimately finding the calling of her life, teaching. Since the loss of her son, John, to suicide, she has dedicated herself to educating others about the importance of focusing on mental health as a medical, and potentially fatal, condition. https://www.facebook.com/findingcolorinthedarkness
Today, I sit down with John Fish who you might know from his YouTube channel, with nearly a million subscribers, that chronicles his growth throughout college. And that's what we talk about in this episode. The channel started growing with his vlogs as a computer science and psychology student at Harvard but has transitioned into much more. John reflects deeply on his experiences, documents what he's thinking about, and then shares his insights. His videos cover everything: books, productivity tips, programming projects, and importantly general wellbeing and mental health. And this conversation really revolves around the theme of growth. John has obviously put a lot of content out there that doesn't change once it's published... but the guy behind the videos has. Today, John shares the ways he's updated and changed the way he thinks. How does he set goals? (not what you think). How does he plan his days? (it's not down to the minute). How does he take care of his mental health? (he keeps it simple). And that's just scratching the surface of what we talk about...along the way we discuss internal pressure, unrealistic expectations, and of course, books. Since John thinks about his mental frameworks and tactics more than most, I think this conversation is especially insightful with actionable takeaways for all. Please enjoy. It is also the story of her search to find hope and purpose in the aftermath of John’s death by suicide. Her goal is twofold: to help those who suffer with severe depression and thoughts of suicide by validating their pain as a medical condition and, to offer guidance to both those who have lost a loved one to suicide, or to parents of those who may be a suicide risk.Margie can be found on IG @findingcolorinthedarknessAs always, please follow Stay Alive Inc. @abrandforthebroken on IG and at our website stayaliveinc.orgJOIN our digital online community: https://www.stayaliveinc.org/pages/join-our-digital-community You can also find Sara on Instagram @saraswellnessway and schedule with her through her Holistic Health and Wellness coaching at https://www.thewellnesswayllc.com/ Please utilize your national mental health resources if you are in need: National Prevention Suicide Lifeline - 1-800-273-8255 The Crisis Text Line - text HOME to 741741National Drug/Substance Abuse Hotline - 1-844-289-0879

Finding Color in the Darkness: Losing My Son to Bipolar Disorder with Margaret Thompson Margaret Thompson’s Finding Color in the Darkness is a report from the front lines of the battle against mental health disorders. Her son, John Fish, is a bright young boy growing up in an average American town, going to school, playing with his brother and walking his dogs on the beach each day. He grows into adolescence and slowly a dark sky seems to settle over him; he is complicated, sensitive and growing more silent every day. His mother knows a disaster is looming but her attempts to reach her son go unrecognized and this page-turning memoir reaches its devastating conclusion. Too late, John is enveloped in a love he seemed never able to reach as his family and friends gather to say their goodbyes. ********************************************************************* For more information about BITEradio products and services visit: http://www.biteradio.me/index.html

Leading the Pride continues this month by talking with International School of Art & Design alumnus, John Fish ('10). Fish, originally from Iron River, MI, came to Finlandia as a graphic design major to learn how to apply graphics to skateboards. During his time at Finlandia, he spent a large amount of time in the fiber studio and wood shop because he enjoyed building and working with his hands. Having graduated in the midst of a recession, Fish opted to move to Portland, OR and dabbled in a number of odd jobs designing and working in antique shops. Approximately five years ago, Fish became interested in hat making and explored the opportunity to transform an antique shop into a hat store. Listen as host Olivia Myers and Fish talk about the challenges of starting a new business and the importance of following your dreams when working in the arts.
