In early April, Robert Ash joined the Encore Boston Harbor Hotel as executive director of culinary operations. That means he oversees the Wynn Resort property’s banquets, catering and in-room dining as well as its 11 restaurants (including a Shake Shack and possibly the only 21-and-over Dunkin, which is located on the casino floor) and 4 bars and lounges. Ash got his start cooking “out of necessity,” as he said, making dinner for himself and his brother because his parents weren’t around much. He started washing dishes at an Italian trattoria in Buffalo, N.Y., and by the time he was 16 he was a sous chef there. Noticing that a lot of chefs were lacking in pastry skills, he got a second job at a local country club to learn pastry and in the late 1990s got a job in Las Vegas at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in the pastry kitchen of legendary chef Jean-Louis Palladin. He rose to the rank of pastry chef and took those skills to Chicago, and before long switched back to savory, cooking for N9ne restaurant, a steakhouse concept that he helped to expand to Las Vegas and Dallas. Back in Chicago he started working for the Japanese-Peruvian-Brazilian concept Sushi Samba, eventually becoming assistant corporate chef as it expanded. His next stop was back to Las Vegas, working for Wynn for the first time, and then moved to Milwaukee for his first job as head of all culinary operations at a hotel at the InterContinental there. He went on to oversee 21 Omni hotels as a regional executive chef, then spent four years at Fairmont hotels in Canada before landing in Boston at the Encore. He recently discussed what he has learned over the years, especially about training and supporting cooks, spotting talented and managing the labor and supply chain woes that are plaguing everyone these days.

They say the path to success is never a straight line. The road to get there has many ups and downs and is riddled with challenges along the way. And for those who were born with a disadvantage, the journey becomes even more difficult. John Fish grew up with dyslexia and struggled with reading and writing. In spite of having a learning disability, his football coach saw his potential and took him under his wing. This helped John realize that being dyslexic is not necessarily a barrier to success and that he can actually use it to his advantage. Today, John Fish is chairman and CEO of Suffolk Construction, one of the most successful privately-owned construction management companies in the United States. He is also a philanthropist whose mission is to give back to those who can't help themselves. Let us hear from John, as he shares how having dyslexia led him to discover his characteristics that catapulted him to a high level of success, how his company is using data and technology to disrupt the construction industry, and why he thinks supporting the underprivileged is extremely important. Top Takeaways 14:38 Hacks for people with dyslexia to help absorb things they're reading 16:33 Why running a company is like playing in a football game 21:20 The most essential thing about any business 25:56 The biggest accelerator of Suffolk's growth 31:35 What Vision 2025 is all about 36:15 How to find the most productive workers 36:58 The best way to get ahead in life 40:10 The downside of having equity partners 41:11 Why John believes in giving back 41:50 What are the uses of A.I. and tech in the construction management world? 45:40 What is the ultimate goal in the construction industry? 47:14 What does “winning is not normal” mean? Contact John Fish LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnffish/ www.suffolk.com About the guest John Fish was born and raised in a fourth generation construction family. When he was young, he always struggled in school and realized he was dyslexic. His condition worsened as he went through high school and he only learned to read while he was in ninth grade. When John went to prep school, he met a coach who took him under his wing. He introduced John to a tutor that taught him how to read and write. This allowed John to confront his weaknesses and use them to his advantage. John knew that he wouldn't achieve the level of success that he had if not for the people who helped him. John realized that it's now his turn to give back, so when he turned 28, he started getting involved in boards in different nonprofits. In 1982, John's father lent him some money to start Suffolk. The company began to grow pretty quickly as an organization. They eventually worked in the northeast part of the country, grew to the southeast, and then the southwest. And before the year 2000, Suffolk became almost a 2.5 billion dollar business. By 2017, Suffolk had grown to be one of the country's top construction companies, responsible for several high-profile projects such as Boston's Millennium Tower, Encore Boston Harbor, and The Guitar Hotel in Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood. John's awards include, Boston magazine's #1 most powerful person in Boston in 2012 and 2015, and was #8 on that list in 2020. In addition, he was named the 6th most influential person in Boston philanthropy in 2013. The Boston Globe named him Bostonian of the Year in 2015 and 2018. And Boston Business Journal's also included him in the "POWER 50" list.

WBZ's Jordan Rich talks with Matt Robinson of matts-meals.com about how the Encore Boston Harbor Casino is offering online classes.
Eight years ago, when the legislature approved casinos in the Bay State, opponents worried that more opportunities to gamble would be difficult for people with compulsive gambling habits. Everett's Encore Boston Harbor resort is now set to open in just under two months. It's the state's third casino, with more to come. How is this impacting people addicted to gambling? Do more casinos put others at risk of developing gambling addictions? Guests: Dr. Debi LaPlante - Director of Cambridge Health Alliance's Division on Addiction Marlene Warner - Executive Director of Massachusetts Council on Compulsive Gambling Ed Talbot - Executive Director of the New Hampshire Council on Problem Gambling If you or someone you know is struggling with a gambling addiction, a 24/7 help line and a list of other resources can be found at the Massachusetts Council on Compulsive Gambling's Get Help page. Dorothy Boone from Temple, Texas was planning a trip to Laughlin, Nevada which included some casino gambling. Taking the advice of some close friends, she and her husband decided visit Lake Tahoe instead. They ended up at Harveys Lake Tahoe in Nevada when Dorothy landed that big jackpot. She was playing 3 Card Progressive Poker when the winning combination added up to a $1,340,518 jackpot. She told casino representatives at Harveys that part of her plans for the money was to buy a new house. She is also taking her grandchildren to Disney World or Disneyland. In The Second Story, The Encore Boston Harbor Casino Experiences a Slot Machine CrashEarlier this month on a busy Friday night, the slot screens at Encore Boston Harbor went blank. The only message on the machine was to call an attendant. This was the result of an unexpected system outage that shut everything down. The Boston-area casino offers over 2800 different versions of video slots, video poker machines and other electronic table games. While the machines were down, the casino paid out any jackpots by hand. The system was quickly restored and all winners received their funds. Everything was back to normal by 9:30 p.m. at one of the busiest casinos in the area.In The Next Story, Las Vegas Gaming Giants Hope Stocks Can Rebound Three of the biggest gaming companies in Las Vegas have gotten off to a rough start this year. The Las Vegas Sands, Wynn Resorts and MGM Resorts all have close ties to Macao, China. This region has become the casino gambling center of Asia. Those properties were forced to briefly shutdown due to the outbreak of the coronavirus. They have since reopened but the damage to business has already been done. Business started to slide during the busy Chinese New Year holiday ahead of closing their doors. The Las Vegas companies expect the loss to impact first quarter results of their entire casino operations.Lastly, The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board Joins the Fight Against “Skill Game”Pace-O-Matic is a large manufacturer of electronic games. It has been distributing slot-like machine games outside the legal casino gaming industry for years. The contention is that these gambling devices are legal because they are based on skill not luck. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board disagrees. Earlier this month, the PGCB decided to join and ongoing legal battle to state its case in the matter. The stance is these skill games are illegal gambling machines. The board’s lawyers also contend that they circumvent the 52 percent tax on winnings. That is what legal state casinos pay on their regulated slot machine winnings.
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission released its numbers for the month of January, and they show revenue expectations falling short once again for the Encore Boston Harbor resort and casino. WBZ NewsRadio's James Rojas reports.
Summary = In an effort to “rightsize” operations at Encore Boston Harbor, the casino’s parent company Wynn Resorts looks to reduce costs. This is in light of the fact that the $2.6 billion gambling venue is missing its monthly revenue projections. Next Up Is Virginia Governor is “Open” to Legal Casino Gaming? The issue of legalized casino gaming in Virginia has been a hot topic for the last few years. Company officials along with state and local dignitaries showed up for Hard Rock’s ground breaking festivities in Gary. Three original members of the Jackson 5 (Marlon, Tito and Jackie) performed the honors with guitar-handled shovels. Winning just one four-digit jackpot would make any slot player’s day. Lawrence Fuller of Reno, went on a slots jackpot spree that resulted in almost $1 million in winnings. The big hit at the Atlantis Casino Resort and Spa was for $888,585.03.
The main commercial airport heading in and out of Las Vegas is #McCarran International. News sources were not sure if Ryan C. was just flying in or getting ready to leave town. They do know that he landed a #jackpot of $317,795.94 playing a .25 Wheel of Fortune progressive slot. The actual International Game Technology (IGT) game was Triple Red Hot 7. The big win came on Monday, Nov. 18. The airport win was just part of the recent Wheel of Fortune hot streak in November. A player hit it big at the Mirage for over $2 million playing Triple Red Hot Bells. Next Up, The Las Vegas Mirage Pays Out Over $2 Million on Slots JackpotFriday, Nov.15 will be a day that one lucky slots player will always remember. The actual jackpot added up to $2,218,046. It was won by an unidentified player on the Wheel of Fortune Triple Red Hot Bells. Manufactured by International Game Technology (IGT), this is part of a series of highly popular Wheel of Fortune progressive slots. The Mirage remains one of the most poplar and recognized casino resorts on the Las Vegas Strip. The elaborate pool area consists of a tropical rain forest with a live, erupting volcano. The casino floor offers a wide selection of #slots and table games. In The Next Story, King of Twitch Poker Makes The Real Money Gambling HeadlinesThe Super Smash Bros. will host an exhibition match for “King of #Twitch #Poker.” The event is expected to be a really big deal. In attendance are poker crowd favorites such as: Mang0, Slimeil, Chillindude, Tafokints and Ludwig. Also expected at the highlighted table is Andy Milonakis of #MTV and Comedy Central. Internet personality Destiny should be there as well as A&E’s Storage Wars personality Rene Nezhoda. Players will compete for a share of the $10,000 prize purse. They can also earn a chance to join the celebrity ranks for the $75,000 “King of Twitch Poker” main event in late December.Lastly, Federal Judge Dismisses a $3 Billion Lawsuit Against Wynn ResortsA federal judge ruling in a Massachusetts courtroom did not find merit in a $3 billion lawsuit involving Wynn Resorts. The case pertained to how the Las Vegas company was able to secure a license for Encore Boston Harbor. US District Court Chief Judge Patti Saris ruled in the case. She stated that Sterling Suffolk Racecourse did not prove it’s allegations. That company claimed that #Wynn violated racketeering statutes under the federal RICO act. Sterling Suffolk proposed a Mohegan Sun casino for the Boston area. It is is “exploring all its options” after the loss in court. Wynn Resorts did not comment on the situation.
