Chantelle Erickson, known as "the mother runner," has enjoyed running for 15 years. Originally from the Greater Toronto Area, she moved west, living in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Her running journey spans obstacle races, marathons, ultras, and multi-stage races, all initially in the pursuit of health and wellness. Starting on a treadmill, she soon embraced the outdoors, running on Saskatchewan's gravel roads. Running became crucial for her mental well-being, offering a positive self-image and goal-setting opportunities.Chantelle's structured approach has kept her consistent for over a decade. After her son's birth, she completed her first half-marathon within eight months, living by her mantra, "If you can believe it, you can achieve it." She has raced in numerous Canadian cities and achieved a podium finish in Fernie in 2016. Her passion for mountains was ignited after a challenging 70-mile backpacking trip in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. She entered ultra marathons in 2017, completing her first 50k at the Lost Soul Ultra. With podium finishes in subsequent races, Chantelle realized the importance of consistent training and coaching. Despite facing injuries and harsh conditions, she remains resilient, using running to overcome life's setbacks. Chantelle coaches for Personal Peak and writes for Canadian Running magazine. Lauren Mantha is deep in the midst of figuring out her path in life and trying a bunch of new things along the way. This is how running came to her: she likes to be active and fit and is open to new experiences. You will notice we talk a lot more about her career than usual on the show: she is shifting gears from working as a Registered Nurse to completing a Graduate Certificate in Public Relations. This seemed to be the common thread in her story: whatever Lauren does, she wants to feel passionately inspired by it. So when running became part of her lifestyle, she was motivated to try attending run clubs. This sparked a new passion and she created A Running List: a website that breaks down barriers to participation in run clubs and crews and is working to bring the running community closer together. Her website currently lists as many run clubs and crews as she could find in the GTA, but thanks to a feature in Canadian Running, she has connected with all kinds of new friends and has expanded to include cities all across Canada. Her interest in getting active feedback from the run community drives her to always look to do more and make the resource even more inclusive. Lauren is incredibly driven and giving: she does all of this work in her spare time and the site is free to anyone who wants the information. And that's pretty awesome if you ask me.  Follow Lauren on Instagram @laurenmantha A Running List can be found at @arunninglist and www.arunninglist.com  Photo Credit: @johnwithlenses   Things we talk about in this episode: Puppy yoga!!! https://doggos.ca/products/puppy-yoga-toronto Run Clubs and sidewalk sharing in the GTA https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/running-club-toronto-sidewalks-1.7076506   EPISODE SPONSOR: Spring Run-Off Wish winter a fond farewell by participating in the Spring Run-Off in person on April 6, 2024, at High Park or virtually wherever you are. Recently named “Canada's Greatest Female Distance Runner” by Canadian Running magazine, Lynn Kanuka won medals on numerous international stages and set almost every Canadian middle distance record during the height of her storied career in the 1980s. Born and raised in Regina, SK, Lynn now lives just outside of Vancouver where, until 2021, she coached our current Canadian record holder in the marathon, Natasha Wodak (episode 124). We chatted with Lynn about how she discovered running, what role her father played, and the many influential coaches she had over the years. We also dig deep into all the details of her 3000m bronze medal performance at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. While this iconic race might be the one she's best known for, Lynn describes other races where she was able to pull even more out of herself and remembers very fondly. We explore the topic of competitiveness, including knowing when to turn it on and when to turn it off, the drawbacks of our instant gratification culture on today's athletes, and why she feels it's harder to be a coach than an athlete. We can see why Natasha Wodak had such amazing things to say about Lynn. She goes all in on whatever is important to her and brings her positive attitude everywhere she goes. Hello Runners, Pollen is upon us as trees and flowers come back to life after the winter months. Well, that, of course, depends on where you live. Trees and flowers bloom all year long in some parts of the United States. Not in Denver. We get the sunshine here, but the trees are bare, and the landscape is brown, though the vista views of the snowcap mountains are breathtaking. With Pollen, for some of us, comes allergies. Sneezing, runny nose, stuffed up head, sneezing, and runny nose. It can be not very pleasant, but as runners, we work through it. So be sure to take some Kleenex with you on your run because, undoubtedly, you will need to blow your nose. Here is an article from Canadian Running titled https://runningmagazine.ca/health-nutrition/should-you-run-with-seasonal-allergies/#:~:text=Best%20practice%20for%20runners%20with,avoid%20running%20at%20these%20times. ("Should you run with Seasonal Allergies?"). Good luck; my allergies are mild but still sometimes irritating. In this episode, I have three stories for you: Addiction to my running watch. Focus on the Apple Watch Spencer Dukoff, the deputy editor at Men's Health magazine, ran the 50th NYC Marathon as his first. Spencer's journey is remarkable. Brandess Wallace, who was a runner, then wasn't, the was again. Hear her story and her love of running. These stories will motivate and inspire you! Enjoy then! If you know someone with a unique running story, please share it with me.
