Joe Kelly is professor of literature and the director of Irish and Irish American Studies at the College of Charleston, and the author of Marooned: Jamestown, Shipwreck, and a New History of America's Origin. In addition to Marooned, in 2013 Joe published America's Longest Siege: Charleston, Slavery, and the Slow March Towards Civil War, which details the evolving ideology of slavery in America. He is also author of a study of the Irish novelist James Joyce, censorship, obscenity, and the Cold War (Our Joyce: From Outcast to Icon). This conversation, which was great fun, covers a whole range of topics familiar to longstanding and attentive listeners, but with a new and provocative perspective. We talk about John Smith, Sir Francis Drake – who literally takes up a chapter in Joe's book – the Sea Venture wreck, the role of the commoners in the struggle to survive on Bermuda, and the political philosophy of Stephen Hopkins, the one man to spend years in Virginia and then go on to sail on the Mayflower as a Stranger among the Pilgrim Fathers. Was Hopkins the moving force for or even the author of the Mayflower Compact, and the true original English-American political theorist? Finally, we have it out over the fraught question, as between Jamestown and Plymouth, which of our founding mythologies most clearly reflects the American we have become? Joe brings a new and fascinating perspective to that timeless argument. Bell2Bell's latest podcast features Beau Kelley, CEO of diversified real estate holding company Mountain Top Properties Inc. (OTC: MTPP), and Joseph Kelley, CEO of full service real estate management company On Site Builder Construction Co. Inc. To begin the interview, Beau Kelley introduced Mountain Top Properties and its business model. “This company is really focused on two main sectors, which are real estate/real property development and property technology,” Beau Kelley said. “We see that the property technology side of things is really a massive, growing opportunity to be able to expedite finance and payment methods and shipping routes and so many things that we can help out from a logistics standpoint. On the real estate side, this has been an opportunity that my father and I have talked about for a long time – bringing the capital markets opportunities into his building business.” Joseph Kelley then discussed On Site Builder Construction and its history. “We're approaching our 45th year building in the Hamptons. I've had the pleasure to work with some of the most renowned designers, interior designers and architects, building a custom home portfolio… Our houses have been highlighted in many publications and social media contacts and magazines and so forth. We have always had a tremendous reputation of building on time and on budget, even in the very high-end market.” Beau Kelley then provided some insight into the real estate market of the Hamptons. “The real estate market here is already a very well-known, high-end market… and there are not enough of these high-end homes available on the market to satisfy demand. So, although there are some opportunities to be able to redevelop existing projects, there are fantastic opportunities in ground-up homes. What we do is identify the lot and the area that we want to be in – waterfront and water view are really the premium areas to be. We're really looking forward to being able to get going with two or three projects in the new year, because we see that being just a fantastic way to build shareholder value and partner value over time.” Join IBN's Stuart Smith, CEO Beau Kelley of Mountain Top Properties Inc. and CEO Joseph Kelley of On Site Builder Construction Co. Be sure to check the links below to stay in touch with their future works!"Set in Cleveland, the series follows a homeless man who lost his job and then his family, driving him into a vagrant state of disillusionment and comic book fantasy. Yet his actions will leave readers questioning who is really crazy. Is it so insane to want to help people, or does the true madness lie with those who see suffering and choose to look the other way? Delta Bravo Boston! Episode 023 of MISSION STATEMENTS: A DBUET Podcast is now available on all platforms. The awesome Joseph W. Kelly and Danny Johnson are the guests on this episode. We met up a few weeks back in Boston to hit locations, then met up with Fred Nowosielski, Jimmy Granara, and Tim True at Ernesto's Pizza in Somerville. Joseph, being a lifelong Boston native, he offered to pick us up from my hotel at 7:30am on Saturday morning. We ripped through the city and before 3pm, we accomplished more than if I was there by myself for three days, all while giving us a history lesson and bringing us to spots that weren't on my list of spots to hit. An awesome Saturday with Joe, then myself and Danny met up on Sunday and smashed even more. We discuss the ins and the outs of both days along with the meet-up at Ernesto's with the other team members. Just a fun weekend that will happen again in a couple of months, for sure. Our conversation today is with Greg Basch. He is the Campus Leadership Pastor at Elevation Church, so he coaches and leads leaders and really just has a brilliant leadership mind and voice (seriously, follow him on IG asap). But before we get into the conversation with Greg, we have our first “Top 5” this season. Joseph Kelly is the Associate Pastor at Discovery Church in Oklahoma City, OK, and he gives us his top 5 prayers every leader should pray (1:16). Since our theme this season is “from the second chair, for the second chair,” we're doing a little "get to know you" time with our guests since so many will be brand new to the podcast (9:31). Then, on some of our episodes this season, we will give our guests 10 minutes to give us their favorite leadership lesson or message. So I'm setting Greg loose for an incredible lesson on promoting and producing (17:20). Finally, for our conversation, we're talking about being faithful in your calling (32:06).
A Little Bit Culty – What do Pete Rose, Grandma Walton, skin boys, Dear Prudence, Brooks Brothers suits, David Lynch, Mary Tyler Moore, Merv Griffin, Mary Tyler Moore, Clint Eastwood, Burt Reynolds and Margaret Singer have in common? They're all mentioned in this episode, and you'll have to listen to find out why. There's just not enough room in these show notes to tell you. But don't worry, you'll be glad you listened, because Patrick Ryan can tell a culty oral history with the best of them. He joins Sarah and Nippy for the penultimate episode of Season 2, and it's a doozy that just might make you take a second look at your meditation practice. As Stefon on SNL would say, “This one has something for everyone: Yogic flying, off-brand incense, and fake CIA operatives.” It's been a batshit year, kids, so enjoy 2021's last A Little Bit Culty episode drop.More about today's guest: Patrick Ryan is a graduate of Maharishi International University. He has been a cult intervention specialist since 1984. Joseph Kelly, the writer-director of Clown Motel and Clown Motel 2 and Lilian Sin one of the scary clowns of Clown Motel 2 joined Mark and Nicole for a frighteningly fun showJoseph talked about taking inspiration from the haunted Tonopah motel which gives his film it's name, some possibly paranormal activity which happened during shooting, how he was able to get Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers actors in the same film, what it was like to double John Cena in Bumblebee (just after directing his brother) and his pride in directing his son in yet another clown film ClownyLilian talked about how she has always been attracted to clowns from an early age, how she channels a psychotic character once she has clown makeup on, she is in much demand post-pandemic and has lined up several horror and sci fi movies and is well on her way to becoming a scream queen and talks about what scares her and what her fetish is (!)Mark and Lilian also had a spirited argument in the middle of the show about the 4 hour Justice League Snyder Cut...This show is brought to you byAudible go to to www.audibletrial.com/dms for a free audiobook, free Audible originals and 30 day free trial to AudibleRaze Energy DrinksGo to https://bit.ly/2VMoqkk and put in the coupon code DMS for 15% off the best energy drinks. "The New Dress" by Virginia Woolf was written in 1924 while Woolf was writing her novel, Mrs. Dalloway. The story follows Mable Waring and her thoughts at Clarissa Dalloway's party. In this episode, Hannah and Jon discuss how the story tackles issues of class and its effects on the main character's mental health, as well as background of the author. Please note: this episode contains themes that may be difficult for some listeners. Virginia Woolf was a victim of suicide and struggled with her mental health. Please approach with caution.Hannah and Jon also discuss how colors are huge symbols and how well Woolf uses them in the story. They also bring up the important point that no matter how well written something may be, it is important to note the jaded histories of the authors.Woolf's history was obtained from "Seagull Book of Stories" an anthology edited by Joseph Kelly, as well as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_Woolf.AnaLITical is created, hosted, and produced by Hannah and Jon Newland.Edited by Jon Newland.Artwork by Hannah Newland, using Logomakr and is owned by Hannah and Jon Newland.Theme music is Robot Gypsy Jazz by John Bartmannm - https://johnbartmann.comWebsite design by Hannah Newland - https://analiticalpod.wixsite.com/analiticalSupport the podcast: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/analiticalpodYou can find the pod's social pages on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @analiticalpod and email us at analiticalpod@gmail.com
"The Chrysanthemums" by John Steinbeck was published in 1937 and is hailed as a Classic American short story. It focuses on the Allen's - a farm family - and Elisa Allen as she tends to her chrysanthemums and encounters a peddler who wants a few of her flowers. In this episode, Hannah and Jon discuss the many symbolic meanings of the chrysanthemums, the seller and his ominous nature.Join in as Jon and Hannah begin the New Year with this saucy tale and bring up a different meaning behind flowers. Jon talks a lot about John Steinbeck's other works, and his inspirations for many of his writings, while Hannah comes pretty close to spoiling the ending to Of Mice and Men. Jon brings up another American author and "the iceberg theory" and no, it is neither the lettuce, nor the sinking mechanism of the Titanic.Steinbeck's history was obtained from "Seagull Book of Stories" an anthology edited by Joseph Kelly.AnaLITical is created, hosted, and produced by Hannah and Jon Newland.Edited by Jon Newland.Artwork by Hannah Newland, using Logomakr and is owned by Hannah and Jon Newland.Theme music is Robot Gypsy Jazz by John Bartmannm - https://johnbartmann.comWebsite design by Hannah Newland - https://analiticalpod.wixsite.com/analiticalSupport the podcast: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/analiticalpodYou can find the pod's social pages on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @analiticalpod and email us at analiticalpod@gmail.com

It takes place in 17th century Puritan New England and follows the titular character as he sets out into the forest to meet the Devil, and finds he is not the only one. In this episode, Hannah and Jon discuss the main theme of corruption and each man's sin, and the excellent way Hawthorne set us in the story.Hannah and Jon take a deep dive into the theme of this historical fiction piece, as well as how exactly Hawthorne uses the setting to further the theme. They compare the corruption of Puritans to other pieces of literature such as The Crucible and The Scarlet Letter, and the Church.History of Nathaniel Hawthorne obtained from "Seagull Book of Stories" an anthology edited by Joseph Kelly.AnaLITical is created, hosted, and produced by Hannah and Jon Newland.Edited by Jon Newland.Artwork by Hannah Newland, using Logomakr and is owned by Hannah and Jon Newland.Theme music is Robot Gypsy Jazz by John Bartmannm - https://johnbartmann.comWebsite design by Hannah Newland - https://analiticalpod.wixsite.com/analiticalSupport the podcast https://www.buymeacoffee.com/analiticalpodYou can find the pod's social pages on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @analiticalpod and email us at analiticalpod@gmail.com

Clown Motel follows a group of ghost hunters, coming from an old ghost town and a bachelorette party, returning home from Las Vegas. When the groups meet up, by mistake, they're left to discover if the motel is really abandoned and haunted by the souls, of the clowns, that once lived there.

In The Past Lane - The Podcast About History and Why It Matters
This week at In The Past Lane, the American History podcast, we take a close look at America’s early colonial origins. Most Americans tend to think of their nation as beginning in Massachusetts with the 1620 establishment of a colony at Plymouth by the Pilgrims. But this view overlooks Jamestown, Virginia which had been established 13 years earlier in 1607. Why? Because, apart from periodic wars with local Native Americans, Massachusetts thrived, while further south in Virginia the Jamestown colony suffered through several periods of starvation and near extinction. And then in 1619 – 400 years ago this year – Jamestown was the site of the arrival of the first shipload of enslaved Africans. Plymouth, MA came to be seen as the New World utopia in contrast to the Jamestown dystopia. But there’s a lot more to the Jamestown story that’s really important to know about when considering the origins of the United States and American democracy. To explain this overlooked chapter of US history, I speak with Joseph Kelly, the author of a new book, Marooned: Jamestown, Shipwreck, and a New History of America’s Origin. In Part I of this interview Kelsey describes what the Smart Lab is and talks about the various forms of technology that Suffolk is implementing on their projects. She also discusses field or project generated discovery of technology versus Smart Lab generated technology and how that plays out in the adoption of new tech. If you go to @Mass.Construction on Instagram or Joseph Kelly on Linkedin I’ve posted photos from the lab so you can see some of the tech we are referring to. It’s quite impressive what Suffolk is doing, not only adopting new tech and methods of innovation but having data analyst in house is taking things to the next level. If you want a glimpse into how are future looks, listen up. Enjoy the show! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/joekelly/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/joekelly/support
Joseph Kelly's groundbreaking research reexamines America's origin story and comes to a radically different interpretation of Jamestown colony. Kelly makes the case for replacing Plymouth Rock with Jamestown as America's origin story.
Part two of our discussion with Joseph Kelly is about how the whole first three years of Jamestown was basically the struggle of common laborers who discovered what the reality on the ground was and who tried to escape. Many of them did, by melting into the Native American population, others got caught, tortured, and made examples of for their fellows who didn’t make it out.How did the Virginia Company interact with the Native Americans? Who was John Smith? Was he a pirate king? Was Jamestown a slave-labor camp? Do we view the founding of America as truly a pilgrimage story?Further Reading:Marooned: Jamestown, Shipwreck, and a New History of America’s Origin, written by Joseph KellyThe Thanksgiving Story You’ve Probably Never Heard, written by Joseph KellyRelated Content:America was Founded by Runaways & Renegades, with Joseph Kelly, Part One: Liberty Chronicles PodcastSoul Liberty, Toleration, and the Emergence of Religious Freedom in the Colonies, written by Micheal RiegerThe Horrifying Lives of Early Virginians: Liberty Chronicles Podcast See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Professor Joseph Kelly joins us today to talk about his book Marooned and how much of our understanding about the beginning of the New World is simply names of people and approximately when they died. Stephen Hopkins, a passenger on the Sea Venture which shipwrecked in Bermuda in 1609, is an exception to that trend.Who is America’s real founding father? What did the Virginia Company do in 1608-1609? Was Jamestown a utopia or a dystopia? Did the Virginia Company have any leadership to guide it? Did they have any real power? What was the difference between colonial Virginia and colonial Bermuda? What is a doctrine of mutual consent?Further Reading:Marooned: Jamestown, Shipwreck, and a New History of America’s Origin, written by Joseph KellyThe Thanksgiving Story You’ve Probably Never Heard, written by Joseph KellyRelated Content:“Virginia is Horrible; Send Cheese”: An Indentured Servant Writes Home, written by Richard FrethorneThe Roots of Modern Libertarian Ideas, written by Brian DohertyThe Horrifying Lives of Early Virginians, Liberty Chronicles Podcast See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
