Don't Panic: Our European friends can raise NATO's game

Over the last few weeks a series of speeches have described the Russian threat to peace in Europe. On 10 January, Sweden's Civil Defence Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin asserted that 'there could be war in Sweden'. This warning was reinforced by the Swedish military commander-in-chief, Gen Micael Byden, suggested that Swedes should mentally prepare for this to happen. On 15 January the UK's Defence Secretary, Grant Shapps, told the assembled audience at Lancaster House that a 'pre-war' 'inflection point' had been reached.1 Just two days after that, the Dutch Chair of NATO's Military Committee, Admiral Robert Bauer warned that the era of predictability was over and that NATO needed a 'warfighting transformation' as an all-out war with Russia could happen at any stage in the next twenty years.4 What, you may ask, is going on? The procession of dire warnings have led commentators to ponder whether the UK's fighting age population are ready, willing and mentally prepared for what they may be required to do. This is nothing new. In the early 1900s the ruling upper strata of post-Edwardian society worried that the social and psychological character of the urban working class had made them unfit to fight a major war.5 Of course, the vast majority of the working classes did not flinch in responding to the call to arms during the First World War. Indeed, it was the middle and upper class students at Oxford University who, in 1933, debated and passed, by 275 votes to 153, a motion proposed by Cyril Edwin Mitchinson Joad that 'This House will under no circumstances fight for King and Country'. Whether or not the majority of the current population feels that modern Britain represents their cultural aspirations - and is therefore worth fighting for - is, perhaps, a more prescient concern.6 Regarding the scale of the Russia threat, a study, in 2018, compared the size of its economy with that of the American state of Texas. Texas's economy, with its rapidly growing population, was adjudged the larger. It was noted that Russia's population was shrinking due to low birth rates. 7 That said, the dictum that you need a strong economy to have strong national defence forces does not seem to apply to hybrid-totalitarian states.8 Nevertheless, there comes a point at which war casualties and economic fragility coalesce. A U.S. Intelligence assessment reported that by December 2023 as many as 315,000 Russian soldiers had been killed or injured in the war in Ukraine, and that the losses in that war had set back Russia's military modernisation by 18 years. If correct, should we be that concerned about the likelihood that Russia will attack a recently enlarged NATO in western Europe in the next decade?9 What do Byden, Bauer and Pistorius know that overrides the logic of Lanchester's square law? Perhaps the Americans have told their European friends that when the situation in Ukraine is resolved they will concentrate on Asia and expect the Europeans to defend themselves against a militarily reinvigorated but economically fragile Russia. NATO's defence is predicated on the assumption that each country will spend at least 2% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on defence. After America decided to pivot to Asia, President Barak Obama's administration hoped that its European NATO allies would embrace the idea of 'Smart Defence', where national capabilities and resources were pooled and shared to optimize their effectiveness. This concept appears to have been designed to make up for the absence of some American capabilities in Europe and the Mediterranean.10 Europe's ability to satisfy this desire rested on the character of their leaders and their willingness to spend their fair share of their country's GDP on defence. Unfortunately, Obama had a tendency to assess the leaders of Europe's largest economic and military states by the depth of their experience and their progressive credentials, rather than by their commitment to European security and defence. He tho...

This week we're back to discuss what some have called the greatest horror movie of all time, and what might be the birth of queer cinema: THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN. In the years following Frankenstein's success, James Whale would go on to put his campy, humorous touch on horror classics The Old Dark House and The Invisible Man before returning to create his masterpiece. Meanwhile Boris Karloff elevated from a struggling bit player to receiving top-of-the-bill status in a string of successes. Of course, no discussion would be complete without discussing the immeasurable impact Elsa Lanchester made with mere minutes of screen time as the titular Bride. With her lightning bolt updo, and a hiss inspired by protective swans, Lanchester delivered one of the most memorable monsters i Universal cannon. The sequel adds humor to the gothic horror, and goes bigger in every way: there's a larger body count, a larger cast, more elaborate sets, and even more fantastical special effects. We're joined by guest Ygraine (What a Scream Podcast) for the first half of our two-parter on Bride.  Please read Brian's "Faces of Frankenstein: The Innovation and Influence of James Whale's Frankenstein" or more information on this seminal film.     If you like what you're listening to make sure to subscribe wherever you get your podcast feeds.    Please take a moment to rate and review us on the Apple Podcast app, or rate us on the Spotify app. Reviews and five star ratings help new listeners find us every day, and we greatly appreciate the feedback and support.    Check out our website for easy access to our full catalog of shows, with hundreds of hours of free content.

Cathy was adopted at an early age, her natural parents were too young to bring her up, so her biological mother was banished from her home in Scotland to a convent in Leeds until Cathy was born, as it was shameful in the 1970's to bring a child up out of wedlock. After her birth Cathy was put into Catholic Care orphanage until she was chosen by her adoptive parents, who took her to Durham. She was raised in Lanchester, Durham until she left home to study photography at eighteen for four years and to escape an abusive relationship, she then moved to London to pursue her photographic career as a Forensic Photographer in 1992, of which she worked until 1998.Soon after moving South she began Kickboxing as a hobby and to give her internal strength and confidence that she lacked after being in an abusive relationship, only to be so good that after just three months her trainer suggested that she entered her first competition. She was hooked immediately and proved to be a natural and was undefeated in twenty-five fights, winning two British Titles. She wanted to have a deeper understanding of the way her body moved and worked to make her a better athlete, so studied for a Diploma in Sports Massage therapy and gained a YMCA Personal Trainer qualification whilst working full time as a Forensic Photographer. After six years competing in Kick Boxing, Cathy was approached by a Professional Boxing Promoter and she applied to the British Boxing Board of Control for her Professional Boxers License, they accepted as they recognized her talent and she became only the second woman in the UK to hold a Professional Boxing license. She loved the sport's fierce competition and its tough training, and was determined to be the best, so she gave up her job with the Metropolitan Police and became a personal trainer at The Third Space Gym (www.thethirdspace.com) so that she could dedicate more time to her training. Within a year she won the European Flyweight Title, and after ten years and twenty-one Professional fights, she became the first ever British female to win a Professional English Title in sporting history and became ranked number three in the World within the Flyweight division. She conquered intense sexism whilst trying to be the best in the World and she says her biggest fight was outside the ring trying to get into the ring but it gave her even more determination to follow her dream.Highly attractive with a charismatic personality, 5' 1” Cathy looks more suited to the glamorous world of modelling and TV than the boxing ring but her non-stop aggressive fighting-style and fierce determination made her a genuine world title contender. She competed for WBC, WIBF, WBF World Titles, WIBF, GBU and WBU International Titles in Germany, Italy and Hungary in three different weight divisions: Light Flyweight, Flyweight and Bantamweight. But unfortunately had to retire in 2007 due to neural damage in her neck, it broke her heart to have to stop doing a sport she loved, but she carried on furthering her knowledge of strength, conditioning, sports psychology for athletes and cognitive behaviour therapy to enable her to help others achieve their aspirations. Cathy is a true inspiration for mental, physical strength and motivation as she has conquered a lot of hurdles in her life, she is currently a personal trainer, strength and conditioning coach, professional boxing and kick boxing coach and cognitive behaviour therapist at The Third Space Gym. She has participated in a diverse range of challenges other than Boxing including sailing across the Atlantic in a World record attempt with Emma Richards and took part in a 120km running and climbing race in the Verdon Canyon, France to raise money for SPARKS charity.Cathy has worked with REFUGE charity to help victims of Domestic Violence as she finds it extremely rewarding to help advance people consciously, and she is proud to get people to look in the mirror and see how much they can and have achieved mentally and physically. She has worked with the MENTAL HEALTH FOUNDATION as she wanted to raise awareness of the great impact that exercise and well being has on a positive and strong mental state, as she has experienced the first hand positive effects. She uses her life experiences and training as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist to help individuals become stronger mentally and physically and currently runs EMPOWERING WOMEN workshops, speeches and presentations. Cathy currently is an ambassador for THE LOTUS FLOWER charity on a Worldwide ‘Boxing Sisters” project (see THE CHARITY WORKER page). She has also worked as a movement director on Music videos, Operas, Adverts and TV shows helping performers with their get into relevant psychological mind sets and specific physical movement. And is constantly in the media as an expert, coverage on the charity work she does.In 2015 Cathy teamed up with professional boxing coach Greg Williams and foundered Boxology® Academy. They run boxing education courses; Boxology® Round 1 and Round 2, aimed at personal trainers, sports coaches, martial art and boxing coaches, to teach correct pad holding and boxing techniques. With the U.S. still in the shadow of a potential border wall and the fraught discussions surrounding Brexit still circulating among headlines, journalist and novelist John Lanchester presented us with a satirical and frighteningly timely new novel—The Wall. The story follows Joseph Kavanagh, a Defender on the enormous concrete wall his island nation has built to keep the Others—desperate souls trapped outside the wall amid the rising seas—at bay. We follow him through the cold, loneliness, and fear that arise as he tries to fulfill his duties, we share in the contemplations of the consequences of his post, and we witness the dark part of him that wonders if it might be more interesting if something really did happen to him in the line of duty. Sit in with Lanchester for a compelling reflection on the issues of our time—rising waters, rising fear, rising political division—and a suspenseful story of love, trust, and survival. John Lanchester is the author of five novels, including the best-selling Debt to Pleasure and Capital, as well as several works of nonfiction, including I.O.U. and How to Speak Money. His books have won the Whitbread First Novel Prize, the Hawthornden Prize, and the E. M. Forster Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He is a contributing editor to the London Review of Books and a regular contributor to The New Yorker. This program is part of our Good Lit series, underwritten by the Bernard Osher Foundation. Even with just a two-word title, John Lanchester's newest novel, The Wall, evokes the political divisiveness our time. In this dystopian future, current political issues are taken to their logical extremes: issues of mass immigration (and populist reactions against it) are cast as symptoms of the ultimate problem of climate change. Lanchester's ability to merge reality with metaphor make the novel a poignant wake-up call in the context of global politics, which are often too shortsighted. Join us with moderator Michael Lewis, best-selling author of Moneyball and The Big Short, for a witty back-and-forth between two authors who both have a knack for understanding some of the largest political issues of our time—and more importantly, know how to communicate them in an effective and engaging way. **This Program Contains Explicit Language** Learn more about your ad choices. John Lanchester’s new novel, The Wall, is a Kafkaesque nightmare whose richly-imagined world is very different from our own and yet all too familiar. Like 2012’s Capital (recently made into a TV series starring Toby Jones), Lanchester speaks to our contemporary preoccupations with an unnerving exactness. Keith Miller, reviewing Capital, noted that, ‘like Balzac, Lanchester has the brains to relate the particular to the general; the ruthlessness to make bad things happen to good people; the steadiness of hand to draw unpalatable conclusions’. Lanchester was in conversation with Daniel Soar, editor at the LRB. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

If you haven’t picked up on it by now, Anthony is quite a history buff, particularly when it comes to military strategy and history. He’s discovered that much of what makes a great military strategist and leader is transferrable to the business context. Today’s conversation features Chet Richards, an author who has studied a great deal of military history and has written widely on how to apply the truths found there to the business context. You can hear this engaging conversation and the insights Chet has to share on this episode of In The Arena. How warfare instructs us about business strategy, on this episode of In The ArenaClick To Tweet Why warfare strategy has much to teach about business strategy. The strategies that make a military campaign successful have everything to do with the basic components of organizational success: leadership, morale, cooperative effort, assessment of situations and execution of plans. It’s all those things and more that make the context of warfare one that instructs us in principles that transfer to business leadership and strategy. In this conversation Chet Richards shares a number of insights about how business leaders can guide those they lead into more effective outcomes through staying on mission, clear roles to carry out that mission, and the power and importance of agility. You’ll enjoy this episode. When everyone understands the mission and their role in it, you don’t have to worry about morale. You often hear business leaders or managers these days bemoaning the poor morale in their organizations. But Chet Richards says that morale is an outgrowth of effective communication of the mission and the role each player has in fulfilling it. Using wartime examples, Chet chats with Anthony about how military units have conquered against overwhelming odds when their leaders were killed or disabled simply because they clearly understood their own role in the greater mission that was sought. You’ll learn a lot about how to inspire your people to consistency and greater morale on this episode so be sure you listen. The more minds you have working on your problem, the more successful you will beClick To Tweet How are smaller, poorly equipped forces able to win? The question should immediately transfer to business with just a little bit of consideration. The “mom and pop” store on the corner… how can it win against the big box stores when it’s unable to compete on the basis of price? One of the ways is to become more agile, able to pivot and adapt in ways that the larger competition is unable to do fast enough. That’s just one of the tips Chet Richards mentions on this episode of In the Arena, so be sure you take the time to hear what he has to share. What happens when you’re able to learn faster than your opponents are able to learn? It’s really quite simple: You’re able to take advantage of the mental and practical dissonance your opponent is experiencing to move your business forward. It’s a clear lesson from military strategy that teaches us the importance of staying agile and working our niche to stay ahead of those who would cut into our business. You can hear many examples of this kind of insight, taken directly from military history, athletics, and other realms of endeavor in this conversation. You’ll enjoy this deep dive into military history and business, on this episode of In The Arena. Agility is the ability to change the situation more rapidly than the other side can understandClick To Tweet Outline of this great episode [1:34] Anthony’s introduction to this episode with Chet Richards. [3:40] Who was John Boyd? How Chet met him. [10:18] Why John Boyd was working on improving fighter jets. [16:19] The relationship between warfare and business strategy. [21:12] Lanchester’s model. [23:58] The importance of ultra effectiveness. [28:00] How smaller, poorly equipped forces or organizations are able to win.
