JJ Spahn's emotional and improbable victory—highlighted by a bogey-free 66 in Round 1 and a comeback from five-over through six holes on Sunday—dominates the opening analysis. Spahn's perseverance, bolstered by past experiences like his playoff loss to Rory at Sawgrass and personal life moments, creates one of golf's most compelling storylines this year. Sam Burns, despite leading after 36 holes, faltered on Sunday with a back-nine 5-over but gained praise for his accountability in addressing a controversial rules decision on the 15th hole. Victor Hovland impressed with another top-10 major finish, while Tyrell Hatton and Cam Young finished tied for fourth, each undone by late bogeys. Carlos Ortiz's top-4 finish secured him future major spots and significant earnings. Scottie Scheffler posted a T-7 finish with elite iron play but struggled with driving accuracy. Brooks Koepka showed flashes of his major-winning form with a T-12 finish. Bryson DeChambeau and Keegan Bradley both disappointed due to poor putting and iron play, respectively. Collin Morikawa dazzled tee-to-green but suffered a shocking putting regression. Betting-wise, Will Doctor's card went down 2 units for the week, bringing his YTD loss to 70.7 units. Matchup wins included Rahm over McIlroy and Matsuyama as top Japanese, while Åberg missed the cut as the top Nordic. For the Travelers Championship, Doctor critiques the 72-man no-cut format, urging a return to 120-player fields with cuts and innovations like a shot clock. Course characteristics at TPC River Highlands favor accurate drivers and elite wedge players. Scottie Scheffler headlines as a strong pick at +325 with no statistical weaknesses. Rory McIlroy is passed on due to poor wedge play and fatigue. Morikawa is deemed overpriced despite his iron strength. Schauffele is dismissed for weak wedge approach stats. Matchups include Akshay Bhatia over Sungjae Im and Sepp Straka over Patrick Cantlay, based on wedge stats and recent form. Russell Henley is endorsed as a top-10 pick and outright bet due to his improved putting and elite iron play. Additional outrights include Bud Cauley at 110-1 for his course fit and Scottie Scheffler as the favorite. First-round bet goes to Sam Burns to start strong. Fantasy lineups are provided for both DraftKings and PGATOUR.com formats, featuring Straka, Henley, McIntyre, Spieth, Bhatia, and Cauley. The scoring prediction is -20 under par, with the best bet being Henley top 10 at +275. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Talk Birdie To Me

It's US Open week and you'd think we'd start the show talking about that, or maybe about Ryan Fox's win in the Canadian Open, but no. Mark has found a new emoji that he likes and that's what he brings to the table to open the show with. Seriously Talk Birdie To Me used to be a serious golf show, we have jumped the shark. Even worse, the emoji doesn't mean what Mark thinks it does....awkward.But onto the US Open! Mark loves the week, and says even though the course is set up to be brutal and unreasonable, he loves watching it. He asks Nick what a 9-marker playing on Thursday would hypothetically shoot at Oakmont. Sobering. Nick talks about how difficult the course is, and was when he played it. The rough is juicy and the greens quick, and Nick expects that there is a chance the winning score may be level par saying the course is a war of attrition.Don't forget our Talk Birdie To Me multi at Betr - 16 bucks for Scheffler top 3, Ludvig to beat Rahm, and Straka to miss the cut. Get on here.We then discuss Ryan Fox's Canadian Open win, and the playoff particularly which was enthralling. Nick and Mark would have preferred rather than a par 5, a 4 or 3 hole for the playoff.Serious time. Mark gives an investigation on the ludicrous Top 100 Golf Course ranking list.Mark and Dan have been watching a new series called Stick about a former golf pro, Nick hasn't seen it yet. See the trailer here, it's good fun and worth a look. Mark is also excited about Happy Gilmore 2 which is 6 weeks away, Nick will watch it but isn't as excited and feels it looks pretty ordinary. After the turn a selfish Top 5 from Mark. His 5 things that he is most excited about in golf at the moment. Controversial though, as Dan accuses Mark of telling porky pies, and Nick provides clarity over one of his entries that cast doubt for Mark as to whether it should be on the list.Huge week of results in the PING globals from Nick, plenty of feedback on the Top 100 list - unsurprisingly given how terrible it is, and Mark suggests a movie about David Graham's life would be brilliant to see, and reveals a fact about him that not too many people would know. And in the masterclass today, Nick discusses why good rhythm is good golf, and why he uses a metronome. We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best. Talk Birdie To Me

Today we preview the US Open this weekend, how exciting is it! Mark has come specifically dressed in green or, as he puts it, the colour of money. That's because he is convinced that Straka is still getting no respect, with Hummer and the Betr team putting him at 67 bucks. Mark says they clearly don't know what they're doing.Mark's also watched a video on YouTube of Bryson at Oakmont, and says it is worth the watch. See it here. But onto the US Open - Oakmont, a tough course, Nick has played it and says it is 'scary' how difficult the course is. He also talks about playing US Opens and one of the reasons he loved them was that he knew at some point about half the field would lose their mind and their game would collapse. Nick says the USGA has two goals for the US Open, when they construct the courses, he tells us what they are and why they do it. Mark and Nick discuss the small fairways at Oakmont, and Nick talks about the rough and how thick it is, and what that means for some players. We run through the power rankings, a couple of surprises, and we look at the Aussies (and Ryan Fox) and discuss their chances. Mark says Cam Smith's swing is in bad shape, the worst he has seen it.After the turn....we build another Betr Multi. And it's a lazy chance.Scheffler to finish Top 3 - surely as close to a lock as you can be!;Ludvig Åberg to beat Jon Rahm - a good shot, certainly not a lock, but not out of the question;Straka to miss the cut.Mark is unhappy with the final leg, but Nick and Dan rate it.That's our Talk Birdie To Me multi, only available at Betr - download the app, or go the the website, it takes literally 90 seconds to set up an account, click on Betr Specials, and the Talk Birdie To Me multi is there.Enjoy the Open !We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best. Talk Birdie To Me

After a massive weekend in the US Women's Open at Erin Hills, and a big tournament at 'Jacks Place', Ala Memorial, we're back with a busy Talk Birdie To Me podcast last today. Nick and Mark were very impressed with Maja Stark in her win in the US Open, Nick says she is 'an outstanding player', and Mark agrees, bit admits to not paying a huge amount of attention to her prior to the weekend. Nick has followed her for a while and fills Mark in on her backstory.Whilst he loved Maja's win, Mark dislikes the Erin Hills course and explains why, Nick discusses the setup of the greens, and why he felt it could have been better. Mark's view is that is was set up to deliver boring golf, Nick feels if it was windy that would have livened it up. Whilst Maya was impressive, on form Nick feels Nelly Korda probably should have won but her putting lets her down, and he explains why. Nick then raises the women's 'super slam' and the only player to win it.....who just happens to be an Aussie! Mark cannot believe that this achievement from the legendary Karrie Webb slips under the radar, he also can't believe that Karen Lunn still is not credited with having won a major.Onto Memorial. Having played it, Nick describes is as 'a Players week'., he loved it. And he said it always feels special when Jack Nicklaus is around. Nick tells a story about playing Memorial, and mid-tournament being in the breakfast area, when Jack asked to join him, Nick describes it as one of the greatest conversations he's ever had. Scottie Scheffler killed it again. He plays the 'right shots at the right time' according to Nick. Mark starts banging on about Sepp Straka again, and Nick and Dan ban him from putting Straka in our Betr multi next week. And then. Mark is worked up over a new Top 100 list he has seen - the Worlds Top 100 Golf Courses list which he believes contains some appalling oversights. Nick and Mark run through the list and discuss what shouldn't be there, and what should. Nicks changes his Top 5 plans in the turn and decides to do the the Top 5 courses that should have made the Worlds Top 100 Golf Courses list but didn't.Feedback and we start with some constructive criticism from wolfpacker Jeff. Then into comments on LIV buying into the DPWT, and reaction to Marks comments last week of: 'are you a LIV lover or a PGA hater'. Big PING global results this week from Nick, particularly as there were two big events over the weekend. And Marks masterclass, inspired by Maja Stark, on 'hovering' the club. We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best.

Talk Birdie To Me

We start today's pod talking about Scottie Scheffler's thumping win in Charlotte, Nick describes Scottie as 'Tiger-esque' at the moment, and Nick and Mark discuss his impressive performance, and some key moments. Mark loves how the year is shaping up with Rory, Scottie notching big wins, and Nick adds Bryson to the conversation as well.Nick brings up the multi that we had on with Betr. It didn't go well. Rory let us down, and it appears that we were on the wrong JT. Mark is confident that one will come off for the Wolfpack, and he is doubling down on Straka.Back to Scottie. Mark was impressed, not only with his performance but with how is caddy Ted Scott spoke about how Scottie handled the weekend mentally. Nick outlines what he sees in Scottie's game when he is under pressure. Mark loved the stats that were being provided on Scottie's misses to the left from Trevor Immelman who he describes as an elite golf commentator. We play a video of Scottie's 2nd shot on 15 on Sunday which Mark describes as his best shot of the tournament - but what a follow through! And on swings and follow throughs, who is the tour pro that Tiger tells Charlie to watch?Nick questions if the LIV guys are getting effective preparation for majors, in playing LIV. Mark raises Jon Rahm and feels if he made the birdie on 14 and 15, the outcome may have been different, both Nick and Mark feel an in-form Rahm is great for golf.Mudballs. Should they be addresses? Mark says the mudball situation in Charlotte should not have happened. And we discuss Shane Lowry's ball in another player's pitchmark/plughole, Mark feels this should be address, Nick says it is part of the game and it should be left as is.What about Jhonattan Vegas' shot into a rake! We watch the video and discuss. Mark starts banging on about rakes again. Illegal drivers. Nick and Mark discuss Scottie's and Rory's, and Mark says Rory's non-media appearance was 'shameful'.Top 5 from Nick on the toughest final 3 holes he's ever played in a major, he runs through them, explains why, and names what he believes is the toughest Par 4 in the world.Feedback today is largely on the coverage in Australian at the weekend, and on Rory's announcement last week. Plus we have a wolfpacker comment about Kingston Heath that Mark 'refuses to comment on'.PING globals results from Nick, comprehensive as always, and Marks masterclass which he describes as 'his greatest ever'.We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best. Talk Birdie To Me

Following the bonus pod this morning when Mark Allen broke the news of Rory McIlroy at Royal Melbourne Composite this year (so good!), for today's pod we park Rory, there's been plenty of chat about him, and there will be plenty of opportunities to discuss - but we have a full podcast today with some great stuff to chat about. We start by talking about the Truist Championship in Philadelphia at the weekend and Sepp Straka getting a win. Mark has been on Sepp for the last few tournaments at Betr, was he on at the weekend?Nick and Mark look at Sepps swing, which is stunning, and give their observations. Mark describes it as a 'touch of class'. We talk about other golf swings, and Ryan Fox's comes up given it is slightly unorthodox. We look at Ryan's from the back, and the side, and break it down. Mark asks Nick what advice he'd give Ryan on his swing, and we kick around whether we could get Ryan's coach Marcus Wheelhouse on for a chat....whilst we're talking Mark shoots a text through, we'll see what comes back.We had a preview of the PGA Championship yesterday, but it's so close now that we kick it around a little more. Nick had one of his worst ever finishes at Quail Hollow, and tells the story. Nick and Mark each tell a story about some of their good 'made the cut' tournaments - Mark in Singapore and Nick in Mexico. And during the turn, Nick remembers a bad time he missed a cut, and tells us the story in the back 9...ouch.Top 5 from Mark is on the best Australian Opens ever. Has he missed one? Let us know.PING Global results from Nick, and Mark is keen to know if Sepp Straka can win this coming weekend. Nick says no, but says he expects Ryan Fox to play well as his game suits the course.Another tournament on this week is the ISPS Handa Australian Blind Golf Open in Adelaide, and we have a chat with wolfpacker Mark Eschbank who is playing in the tournament and tells us all about it. What is it like to have low vision and play golf? Nick and Mark are keen to find out, and Mark talks us through it.Feedback today is exclusively on the 'greatest shot ever made', and wolfpacker Chris has identified one that was criminally missed and may in fact qualify. We put it to Mark, and we look at the results of our poll.Great masterclass from Nick today on fairway bunker shots. Scottie Scheffler, coming in as the favorite at +525, is praised for consistent elite performance, including no finishes worse than 25th in six events since returning from a hand injury, and podium finishes in his last four starts. His game, including a best putting performance of the season in Houston, is peaking. Rory McIlroy is faded despite strong wins at Pebble Beach and the Players; Will cites driving accuracy issues and suggests 10-1 would be a fairer line than 7.25-1. Jon Rahm, now on the LIV circuit, enters at 16-1 with recent top-10s but inconsistent putting and chipping. Morikawa is also passed over due to final-round collapses, though Will does back him to top 10 in Round 1. Other fades include Bryson DeChambeau (20-1), Justin Thomas (25-1), and Hideki Matsuyama (35-1), due to poor putting or chipping trends. Conversely, Will is bullish on Robert MacIntyre (60-1), who has recorded three straight top-11 finishes and two strong prior Augusta showings. He places both an outright bet and a matchup on him. Victor Hovland is another targeted play, specifically in a matchup over Cam Smith, following his Valspar win and a confident outlook on his improved short game. Shane Lowry, cited for consistency and solid Augusta history, is backed for a top 20, while Russell Henley earns a top-30 ticket thanks to elevated iron play. Several key quotes add depth. Scottie Scheffler credits Texas's varied conditions for developing his shot-making adaptability. Rory McIlroy reflects on family memories and the beauty of Augusta. Morikawa defends media avoidance, which Will critiques as symptomatic of poor mental preparation. Hovland speaks optimistically about short-game improvements with coach Grant Waite, prompting confidence from Will. Aberg's comments reveal awareness of recent struggles, but he remains committed to routine. Sepp Straka remains a strong value at 100-1 with excellent iron play and driving form. He's bet to beat Sam Burns in a first-round matchup, who is faded due to declining performance. Sung Jae Im's ticket has cratered in value, and Will expresses regret on that pick. Spieth is passed over at 40-1 due to erratic iron play, despite solid chipping and putting. Other noted fades include Tommy Fleetwood, Corey Connors, Cam Smith, Patrick Cantlay, Min Woo Lee, and Brooks Koepka, each due to specific statistical weaknesses in approach, short game, or driving. Later segments analyze lower-ranked players, including positive remarks about Phil Mickelson's resurgence and Charles Schwartzel's sharp form. Will picks Mickelson to make the cut, citing recent LIV success. Keegan Bradley and Akshay Bhatia are also featured in favorable matchups. He stresses the importance of reviewing picks, especially amid a losing streak, and outlines the four Masters futures he carries from December: Scottie Scheffler (7-1), Ludwig Aberg (14-1), Sung Jae Im (50-1), and Sepp Straka (100-1), with three additional tickets on Sahith Theegala, Tom Kim, and Davis Thompson to win any major. Čo si myslí o odlive mozgov a kariére v zahraničí? Will Doctor gives you the sharpest card for the 2024 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. -Discussing top six on odds board -4 matchups -1 t10 -3 outrights -Sleeper, First Round Pick -Scoring prediction -Best bet The BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth is a highlight of the DP World Tour, with top players battling for PGA Tour cards. Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, and Matteo Manassero headline the field, with McIlroy entering as a favorite after a strong showing at the Irish Open. Key Players and Predictions Rory McIlroy (02:34) Rory McIlroy is in great form after nearly winning the Irish Open. He has consistently finished in the top 10 at Wentworth, including a win in 2014. At +625, McIlroy is a strong pick to win, and his iron play makes him a top contender. Tommy Fleetwood (04:52) Tommy Fleetwood struggles to close at Wentworth. His inability to put together four solid rounds and poor putting form make him a risky pick this week. McIlroy over Fleetwood at -130 is a smart bet. Shane Lowry (06:17) Shane Lowry, a past champion, has shown inconsistency in his iron play. Despite finishing 12th at the Irish Open, he's not in top form, making him a risky pick for an outright win. Matteo Manassero (08:05) Manassero, the 2013 BMW PGA Champion, is in excellent form with five top-10 finishes this season. At 40-1, he is a great value pick, especially as he fights for a PGA Tour card. Billy Horschel (09:45) Horschel's form has been erratic, particularly with his putting. Despite winning at Wentworth in 2021, his recent struggles make him a long shot at 22-1. Matchups and Bets Rory McIlroy vs. Tommy Fleetwood: McIlroy at -130 is a solid bet based on current form and track record. Matthew Pavan vs. Tom McKibben: Pavan, priced at even money, has the edge given McKibben's struggles. Romain Langasque vs. Jorge Campillo: Langasque at -110 is favored with his consistent form over Campillo. Sleeper Pick Sepp Straka to top 10 at +320 is a great sleeper pick. Straka finished 10th at Wentworth last year and has shown improvement in his iron and putting game recently. Best Bet Matteo Manassero to top 20 at +175 is the best bet of the tournament. With his recent form and past success at Wentworth, he is poised for a strong finish. Conclusion The BMW PGA Championship promises excitement, with McIlroy as the favorite. Dark horses like Manassero and Straka offer great value. Keep an eye on matchups like McIlroy over Fleetwood, and make sure to back Manassero for a top-20 finish. Summary Rory McIlroy at +625 is the favorite. Tommy Fleetwood struggles to close, making him a risky pick. Shane Lowry is inconsistent with his irons. Matteo Manassero at 40-1 is a great value pick. Billy Horschel has struggled recently. Bet on McIlroy over Fleetwood at -130. Romain Langasque is a solid bet over Campillo. Sleeper: Sepp Straka to top 10 at +320. Best bet: Matteo Manassero to top 20 at +175. Winning score prediction: 17 under par. Follow Doc on X @drmedia59 for the latest on the world of golf!  Learn more about your ad choices. Despite being orphaned at a young age, Simon Bolivar was far from an orphan Annie character. Born into a wealthy Criollo family in 1783, his education continued before he made an extensive trip around Europe. While there, he was introduced to ideas of the enlightenment and events such as the French Revolution. Despite his ethnically Spanish roots, he returned to Venezuela determined to gain independence and establish a republic. In subsequent years he became involved in three separate Venezuelan republics whilst establishing himself as the de facto ruler of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Panama, and Bolivia. The latter even named after him.  But his legacy is complicated. A proponent for the abolishment of slavery, for a time an ally of the newly independent Haiti, Bolivar while earning the moniker "The Liberator" was ultimately pushed out of power. In this episode I examine Bolivar's life with my guest, a leading expert on the subject -- his compatriot -- Prof. Tomas Helmut Straka Medina of the prestigious Andre Bello Catholic University of Caracas, Venezuela. Tomas explains the nuances of Bolivar's reign, his motivations and the context of the overall geopolitical situation. Guest:  Prof. Tomas Helmut Straka Medina Tomás Straka is a Venezuelan historian, author, and professor of history at the Andrés Bello Catholic University. He has authored various works, including "La voz de los vencidos," "Hechos y gente," "Un Reino para este mundo," "La épica del desencanto," and "La república fragmentada," among others. Straka holds a PhD in History from Andrés Bello Catholic University and has been a visiting scholar at prestigious institutions like the University of Chicago and Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. He is a member of the National Academy of History in Venezuela since 2016. Straka's contributions to Venezuelan history and academia are significant, reflected in his extensive bibliography covering various aspects of Venezuelan history and society. In addition to his academic endeavors, Straka is known for his involvement in preserving democratic memory in Venezuela, as highlighted in his work "Por el rescate de la memoria democrática en Venezuela." His role as a historian and essayist extends beyond academia, making him a prominent figure in discussions surrounding Venezuelan history and contemporary issues.   Twitter: @thstraka  Instagram: @ thstraka2   Music: Pixabay This episode is sponsored by World History Encyclopedia, one of the top history websites on the internet.
