This week the guys tackle the subject of American Urban Legends with an eye to what classical cultural and narrative archetypes tell us about why these weirdo tales can be so, well, weird. Jeff eagerly (a little too eagerly, Dave might say) drags us into those liminal spaces as we recount the odd tale of the hatchet-wielding, murderous Bunnyman of Clifton, Virginia who creepily lies in wait at the train trestle known as Bunnyman Bridge. All kinds of questions to tackle here: Why do so many urban legends take place at bridges and crossroads? Why are so many of the creatures involved “composite monsters”? Could we see kids visiting these creepy sites at midnight as a kind of “do-it-yourself” coming of age ritual? Why are most urban legends not “urban”?

Across today's America, countless people will embark on an adventure. They will prowl among overgrown headstones in forgotten graveyards, stalk through darkened woods and wildlands, and creep down the crumbling corridors of abandoned buildings. They have set forth in search of a profound paranormal experience and may seem to achieve just that. They are part of the growing cultural phenomenon, which is called legend tripping. In If You Should Go at Midnight: Legends and Legend Tripping in America (UP of Mississippi, 2023), Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl guides readers through an exploration of legend tripping, drawing on years of scholarship, documentary accounts, and his own extensive fieldwork. Poring over old reports and legends, sleeping in haunted inns, and trekking through wilderness full of cannibal mutants and strange beasts, Debies-Carl provides an in-depth analysis of this practice that has long fascinated scholars yet remains a mystery to many observers. From multiple perspectives, Debies-Carl illustrates the value of legend tripping for social scientists. In brief, legend tripping reflects the modern world, revealing both its problems and its virtues. In society as well as in legend tripping, there is ambiguity, conflict, crisis of meaning, and the substitution of debate for social consensus. Conversely, both emphasize individual agency and values, even in paranormal matters. While people still need meaningful and transformative experiences, authoritative, traditional institutions are less capable of providing them. Instead, legend trippers voluntarily search for individually meaningful experiences and actively participate in shaping and interpreting those experiences for themselves. Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl is Associate Professor of sociology at the University of New Haven. His research examines the social significance of physical spaces and space-based behaviors and has appeared in various scholarly journals. He is the author of Punk Rock and the Politics of Place (Routledge, 2014). Yadong Li is a PhD student in socio-cultural anthropology at Tulane University. His research interests lie at the intersection of the anthropology of the paranormal, hope studies, and post-structural philosophy. He's an old-school paranormal radio guy who has been in the game for a very long time, and some of the stories that he has about people who have gone on to become legends of the field are mind-blowing. Narratives shape our world in infinite ways, and on this episode, Jen and Stephanie interview Dr. Rachel Gonzalez-Martin to better understand how much established narratives impose restrictions upon the learning environment, undermining the identity and creativity of students and faculty alike. Whose descriptions of what should be dominate the choices we make in education? But through this conversation, we learn that maintaining individual identity and exhibiting professionalism are not mutually exclusive and that finding sensible alternatives to norms and conventions that traditionally indicate academic rigor does not result in immediate termination. Legend Tripping: A Contemporary Legend Casebook explores the practice of legend tripping, wherein individuals or groups travel to a site where a legend is thought to have taken place. Legend tripping is a common informal practice depicted in epics, stories, novels, and film throughout both contemporary and historical vernacular culture. In this collection, contributors show how legend trips can express humanity's interest in the frontier between life and death and the fascination with the possibility of personal contact with the supernatural or spiritual. The volume presents both insightful research and useful pedagogy, making this an invaluable resource in the classroom. Selected major articles on legend tripping, with introductory sections written by the editors, are followed by discussion questions and projects designed to inspire readers to engage critically with legend traditions and customs of legend tripping and to explore possible meanings and symbolics at work. Suggested projects incorporate digital technology as it appears both in legends and in modes of legend tripping.

Legend Tripping is appropriate for students, general readers, and folklorists alike. It is the first volume in the International Society for Contemporary Legend Research series, a set of casebooks providing thorough and up-to-date studies that showcase a variety of scholarly approaches to contemporary legends, along with variants of legend texts, discussion questions, and projects for students.…

In this episode, Clint describes his trip to the OP to meet the members of the Olympic Project during one of their expeditions. Included is a Class A encounter story, details about the hunt for DNA from the Nest Site, and a lengthy discussion about the amazing people involved with the group. "I cannot possibly thank Derek, James, Shane, David, Shelly, Cindy and Barb enough. As well as all the others who welcomed me. The Olympic Project is a first class organization from top to bottom. Their focus is on hard science and research in their quest for answers. It's about family and friendship. I learned more in 2 days with those guys and gals than I'd ever amassed on my own. I can't recommend enough to everyone and anyone to jump at the opportunity to attend an expedition. Truly one of the highlights of my travels so far. Thanks again...I'm honored to call those involved friends." ~ Clint Learn More About the Olympic Project

Haunted Travels Galveston, TexasThe Hotel Galvez and Spa   September 1900, a Category 4 hurricane with winds in excess of 130 mph slams into Galveston, killing more than 6,000 people. Bodies had to be buried at sea...often times only to return awash along the shore. In 1911, a hotel was built on the seawall by local businessmen to help hoist Galveston out of the shallows. The Hotel Galvez has had many a prominent guest, and many have yet to check out.    In this episode, Matt and Clinton discuss the history of the city, the Gulf of Mexico and the pirate and island traditions that have contributed to it's rich and violent history. We hope you enjoy this tale of haunted travel, and look forward to bring you more in the coming weeks. OK Talk - Paranormal Tales of Mysterious Travels

Haunted technology, voices from beyond...are these paranormal experiences, or merely the makings of a magnetic mind? At times lighthearted, often white-knuckled, breathless anticipation of stories too intense for our terrestrial audience. OK Talk is an attempt by radio lifers to talk about things we generally cannot speak about on the actual radio. In this episode, recorded in the witching hour, we talk about spooky stuff that has happened to us. It's not great, it's OK. In the coming weeks, we will be discussing topics that include, but are not limited to: Legend Tripping, Haunted Hotels and Mythical Mysteries, True Crime, Wood Apes (or the creature commonly referred to as Bigfoot, or Sasquatch) Ghosts, False Memories, Fairs and Carnivals, Ghouls, Shapeshifters, Monsters (especially those from Small Towns) and a series of creepy stories and experiences that we hope will delight and fright. We will be joined by luminaries of the field, and some of the most unique and influential members of the darkest corner of our imaginations.
