Don and his son Tim Wilson have also initiated a new record label with promising young musicians to mentor and promote.  THE VENTURES are the best-selling instrumental rock band in music history. In 1958, the group was formed by Tacoma, Washington residents Don Wilson (rhythm and lead guitar) and Bob Bogle (lead and bass guitar). They originally performed as the Impacts and the Versatones before finally settling on The Ventures. Nokie Edwards (lead guitar) joined in 1960 and they recorded their first big hit, a Chet Atkins cover entitled “Walk, Don't Run.” The Ventures lineup in the studio also included Skip Mooreon drums. In 1960, the song peaked at #2 on the Billboard's single chart amid stiff competition from Chubby Checker, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley, and Bryan Hyland. Drummer Howie Johnson replaced Moore in 1960. Mel Taylor became The Ventures permanent drummer in 1962 until his passing in 1996. From 1960 through 1972, The Ventures consistently toured worldwide and charted 37 albums. In the process, Leon also broke quite a lot of his body. The gruelling training, not to mention somersaulting from a very high platform, left him with multiple reconstructive surgeries, before the doctor decided to put Leon out of his misery. But he fought back, and Leon has turned the highs and lows of Olympic diving into a successful career coaching, speaking and mentoring. I highly recommend his TEDx speech, which you can see here. Not before listening to the podcast, obviously, in which Leon talks about staying lockdown healthy, and treating movement as medicine for both our physical and mental health.

Today we have a fascinating conversation with actor Russell Hornsby—from Grimm, Seven Seconds, and The Hate You Give—as well as FENCES, both on Broadway and in the film, his career is full of valuable lessons he’s learned. After twenty years in the industry, he shares how a long-term career was not a given reality for him, but rather something he’s had to fight for every step of the way. His advice is equal parts inspiration and tough love, so whether you’re just starting out or are a few years in, he’s got some healthy perspective about being honest with yourself, doing the work, and putting everything you have on the line for your art.  Russell Hornsby is an American theater, television, and film actor. He is known for his roles as Edward "Eddie" Sutton on ABC Family's Lincoln Heights, as Luke on the HBO drama In Treatment, as Detective Hank Griffin on the NBC series Grimm, and as Lyons in the movie Fences. After finishing his studies at Oxford, Hornsby moved to New York City and was subsequently cast in leading roles in Off Broadway productions of To Kill a Mockingbird (as Atticus Finch), Joe Louis Blues, and Six Degrees of Separation (as Paul). In the late 1990s, he decided to move to Los Angeles in order to transition into television and film. He has appeared in several different television productions including appearing in recurring roles in Haunted as Detective Marcus Bradshaw and Gideon's Crossing as Chief Resident Dr. Aaron Boise. His other television credits include Grey's Anatomy, Law & Order, and In Justice among others. He also played running back Leon Taylor in ESPN's drama series Playmakers. On the big screen, he has appeared in such films as After the Sunset, Big Fat Liar, Get Rich or Die Tryin', Keep the Faith, Baby, Meet the Parents, and Stuck among others. In 2000, Hornsby appeared in the Off-Broadway production of Jitney for which he won a Drama Desk Award and an Obie Award. He starred in the NBC fantasy drama Grimm from 2011 to 2017. This week we chatted to Leon Taylor, three-time GB Olympian who won silver in Athens 2004. Post-retirement Leon has explored and written a book on mentoring called "MENTOR - The most important role you were never trained for" and recently gave a brilliant TEDx talk on movement and mental health. We touched on all of this in our chat and also explored the fine line between winning and athlete welfare. Apologies for the sound quality we had a little difficulty with our mic. “One of the big things for me is, I had no idea how rewarding it was being involved in someone else's performance ... because it was all about me when I was an athlete and then after sport it was a real eye-opener how much intrinsic reward, enjoyment and pure joy you can gain by serving others. I think that for me is where it's at.” – Leon Taylor Leon Taylor is curious, passionate, and accomplished. And he is fiercely committed to what he chooses to focus on. In 1996 Leon attended his first Olympic Games in Atlanta at the age of 18, representing Great Britain in diving. His commitment and training drove him to compete at the Olympic level twice more in the 2000 Sydney Games and the 2004 Athens Games. In Athens, he and his diving partner Peter Waterfield secured Britain's first medal in the sport in 44 years, winning a silver medal in synchronized diving. His career lasted more than 20 years, which is astounding in of itself for such a physically punishing sport. His successes brought diving to the attention of the British public and led to additional investment in the development of the sport and its athletes in Great Britain. Retiring from diving in May 2008, Leon is now an integral part of the BBC Sports Olympic coverage and has also been mentor to, among others, diving sensation Tom Daley. This latter role led him to write his first book. "MENTOR - The most important role you were never trained for" aimed at organisations wishing to engage and nurture talent through mentoring. Leon is a yoga teacher, much sought after professional speaker, conference host, workshop facilitator and executive coach. His reputation and profile in these areas have steadily built over the last decade as he continues his role as a Brand Ambassador for BMW, BT and Lloyds bank, lululemon athletica and SSE. Leon's curiousity remains peaked as he considers what exciting adventures are next and waiting to be discovered.
