Today, we'll be addressing a critical issue for Christian leaders, especially over the last few years. We're talking about burnout. In my own coaching work with leaders, individually and in groups, I've perhaps never seen the level of burnout that I'm witnessing these days. That's why I'm glad to be talking with Sean Nemecek about his new book, The Weary Leader's Guide to Burnout. You're going to find this helpful, whether you find yourself at that level of depletion or not. Sean Nemecek is the West Michigan Regional Director for Pastor-in-Residence Ministries and a co-host of the Hope Renewed podcast. Sean is a third generation pastor. He served as a pastor for 18 years before joining PIR. Now, Sean coaches pastors through ministry issues, conflict, forced exit, transitions, and burnout. He also consults with churches and leadership on sabbatical planning, work culture, and pastoral support. His blog, The Pastor's Soul (pastorsoul.com), teaches churches and pastors how to invest in the pastor's joy for the good of the church. Sean has been married to Amy for over 25 years. In the uncertain and changing world we live in we find a desperate search for hope. The key is to have a true hope, a hope anchored to the right source. If you place your hope in the present world, your wealth, or the people in your life, you will be disappointed. But there is a hope that God gives, which like the rising sun brightens your path.

Let's face it...ministry is hard. And at times it's hard in ways we never thought it would be, and for which we were never really prepared. So many of the day-in and day-out realities - the practical nuts-and-bolts of ministry - can leave us tired, frustrated or wondering if we're even fulfilling God's call. And sometimes it can make us feel very alone. Brian Croft joins us on Hope Renewed to talk about finding hope in the midst of the every-day-ness of ministry and where we can find strength for the practical aspects of our call to shepherd God's flock. Finding hope to address ministry pain is challenging. For women in ministry - or married to those who are - it can be especially so. Finding a place of understanding, safety and healing can be elusive. That's why we're so excited to share in this episode of Hope Renewed a powerful conversation we had with Kristen Joy, founder of The Ministry Wife Coach. Her deeply informed and passionate approach to resourcing women in ministry provides a much needed place of hope for those impacted by the confusion, pain and even trauma of ministry exits. Her story of finding grace in the midst of woundedness gives a strong foundation of leading others to healing. Resources Kristen's Website
This lesson explores the idea of hope in the framework of Christ as our hope now and down the road. Biblical hope is defined, then the theme is developed as follows: (1) valid hope is biblical hope, (2) how to sustain hope in the midst of disappointments and difficulties, (3) how to develop biblical hope, and (4) hope means doing our part. The lesson concludes with an invitation to respond to the message.

It' no secret that pastoral ministry is demanding and requires much from those who engage in it. Practicing good self-care is a must to stay healthy in ministry. But how do you know when you've crossed a line from the normal wear and tear of ministry life into more dangerous areas of damaging fatigue, debilitating anxiety and loss of effectiveness? How do you know when burnout is present? In this important episode of Hope Renewed, we explore the work Sean has done in recognizing burnout in the life of the pastor, and where to find recovery and hope. Having a clear and simple way to begin understanding how burnout may be effecting you (or others!) could be just the lifeline to hope you've been looking for! Numbers 20 was filled with heartache. Thankfully, all did not remain dark for chapter 21 contains a great deal of encouragement. Though it recounts a sinful episode (vv. 4–9), it nonetheless also contains grace and forgiveness, military conquest, gracious divine provision, a song of celebration, and a wonderful fulfilment of prophecy. All things considered, this chapter is thematically about hope and new beginnings. Its theme is hope renewed.
A Hope Renewed, a Faith Rekindled, and a Love Restored.
Good health in any aspect of our lives requires Attention and Intention. It just doesn't happen, it must be pursued and practiced. This is especially true in ministry because there is an enemy - of our souls and of our ministry - who would have us weak, ineffective and irrelevant. How we cultivate our ministry health is as important as the ministry we seek to do! In this episode of Hope Renewed, we talk with Bryan Moak of Converge, and glean some crucial insights from how his work in the Mid-America District is helping to strengthen the Church and her leaders, providing hope to weary and worn warriors. To see what Converge Mid-America is doing to strengthen the church and her leaders, visit: https://convergemidamerica.org/strengthen/
Serving the small (or ordinary) sized church is filled with challenges. So many of the resources and conferences for ministry leaders are geared toward larger-church contexts, and can leave those called to smaller congregations feeling under-served and less than confident about their ministry. In this episode of Hope Renewed we sit down with Karl Vaters, whose love for and experience in small church leadership have uniquely equipped him to be a voice of encouragement for pastors of congregations under 100. He shares some powerful insights about bringing God-sized faith to lesser-sized congregations, how health and numbers are NOT synonymous, and helpful thoughts about navigating these challenging times in the small church. Resources Mentioned: Find all of Karl's Resources at karlvaters.com
Each of us has a story which serves as a testimony to God's grace in our lives. Some of these stories involve deep pain and potential ruin. Others are stories of perseverance and discovery. All of them point to Jesus and the hope of his gospel. In this episode of Hope Renewed, PIR's own Jason Eddy opens his heart and shares his story of burnout and recovery. From a promising beginning in ministry, through an almost catatonic crash, to a renewed and flourishing role in service and ministry, Jason traces the hand of God at work in, around and through him as he navigated an incredibly difficult time of life and ministry. What shines clearly in his story is the One, True God who renews hope and sets our feet on solid ground.
When you think of concepts and practices that help pastors and ministry leaders find hope and thrive, perhaps neuroscience isn't among the immediate thoughts that comes to mind! Yet in the "uniquely and wonderfully made" way in which God has fashioned us, we are discovering the crucial connections between how Biblical truths about our lives and the physiological insights God is revealing about how our brains function are deeply and importantly related. In this fascinating episode of Hope Renewed, we talk with pastor and academic Dr. Charles Stone about his research and discoveries regarding the intersection of Biblical truth with brain insight (which he calls NeuroMinistry), and how pastors and ministry leaders can - by better knowing themselves - avoid common ministry pitfalls and grow in hope-giving, life-bringing practices. From time to time on Hope Renewed we have the opportunity to sit down with pastors and talk with them about navigating the challenges of serving in the church from the viewpoints and experiences of those who are on the "frontline" in local church ministry. We're able to hear their sometimes painful stories and how they have found hope to sustain and strengthen them for the long haul. Issues of violence and moral depravity are not new issues – Isaiah deals with them in chapters 59 and 60, giving answers in that day that are still reverent today. “Hope Renewed” explores the opportunity for us to change when we perceive what is not good. Pastor Tuttle uses Titus 2 and 3 to reveal God's message of hope – that He is faithful to never leave us, that we are saved by His great mercy! What does a pastor look like after a season of renewal and restoration? In this episode of Hope Renewed we talk with Dr. Jim Amandus, the first pastor to walk through the Pastor In Residence process. As a PIR, Jim and his wife were welcomed into a Refuge Church, given opportunity to both engage in ministry and find healing and restoration, and discern God’s next steps for them. His story is one of both struggle and hope, and a testimony to God’s redemptive work in and through His church.
Ministry abounds with expectations, but what can hide on the dark side of unmet or unrealistic ones can leave a pastor empty and losing heart. Discouragement lies along the path to compassion fatigue and burnout. While disappointment is normal and inevitable, a pastor needs to stand guard against discouragement. In this episode of Hope Renewed we explore where discouragement comes from, and what helps us to stand strong in the battle of hope.
