What if truth could speak? Not metaphorically, not through human interpretation, but as its own entity—indignant, unyielding, and, above all, betrayed? This week on Mission Forward, Carrie Fox sits down with bestselling author Mitch Albom in front of a live audience to examine the anatomy of truth—how it bends, how it breaks, and how, in the hands of history's most cunning deceivers, it can be weaponized.Mitch, known for Tuesdays with Morrie and The Five People You Meet in Heaven, takes us behind the curtain of his latest novel, The Little Liar, a story where truth itself is the narrator. He unpacks the moment of inspiration—standing in Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum, listening to a survivor's voice echo through time. He shares his research journey from the streets of Thessaloniki to the darkest corners of human deception. And he pulls no punches about the world we live in today—where lies are not just believed but preferred. As much as this is a conversation about literature, history, even philosophy, it is just as much a conversation about faith—not the quiet, passive kind, but faith in action. Mitch talks candidly about his work in Haiti, the children he has come to love as his own, and the moral weight of decisions that shape their futures. He even gives us a glimpse into his next book, Twice, a whimsical yet profound meditation on second chances and their unintended consequences. How do we cultivate truth? How do we resist the seduction of comforting lies? And, perhaps most poignantly, what does faith look like when it moves beyond words? In a world where deception is currency, the real question isn't whether truth exists—it's whether we have the courage to hear it.Links & NotesLearn more about The Little Liar by Mitch AlbomSupport Mitch's work in Haiti (00:00) - Welcome to Mission Forward

Once you find purpose, and once you find style… what's left? Beauty. What's left is finding and putting out beauty into the world. There are not many writers who have genuinely figured this out … but one of them is Mitch Albom. Mitch is the author of 'Tuesdays with Morrie,' the bestselling memoir of all time, as well as 'The Five People You Meet in Heaven' and his latest bestseller 'The Little Liar' which came out in 2023 and debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. His books have sold over 40 million copies. Mitch just doesn't turn off. He's like a Tasmanian Devil. He's hosting a radio show, he's on TV, he's writing columns in the Detroit Free Press, he's a musician, he's even running an orphanage in Haiti. Mitch is full of energy and life and moves quickly and talks quickly … and so we talked about that. We go deep into why he moves through life so fast. We unpack his relationship with Morrie and talk about how I actually misinterpreted parts of the book. We talk about what the worst thing you can say to an artist is (which he learned from Maya Angelou) and what the true enemy of getting things done is (and surprise, it's not time or energy). Fly down to Detroit with me and let's take the elevator way, way up the 96-year-old Fisher Building. Let's enjoy the wise Mitch Albom sharing his 3 most formative books with us in this classic chapter. Let's flip the page to Chapter 15 now...

Today it's a delight to introduce you to Mitch Albom. I have enjoyed each of his books that I have read including Tuesdays with Morrie and The Stranger in the Lifeboat, so I was intrigued by his latest novel The Little Liar. We live in a day where truth can feel so elusive and difficult to find, that the theme of truth is critically important. Then I saw that the book starts during World War II and I was hooked. Y'all know, I am a student of that time period and write books set then, but the war in Greece was new and fascinating to me. The pursuit of truth and the impacts of twisting truth are so brilliantly woven into this novel. I loved learning how Mitch approaches the theme and story. This conversation felt like a twenty-minute masterclass in some ways while also being so engaging. There are decisions we make as writers, and he lets us behind the curtain into some of the decisions he made while writing The Little Liar. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Thanks for joining us for this episode of Book Talk. You'll be inspired! And be sure to share it and the book with a friend. The 9th Commandment against bearing false witness seems straight forward as a directive against lying. But what happens if you tell a lie unknowingly because you're trusting nature is being abused and used for evil? That is the message of Mitch Albom's novel, "The Little Liar." Set during the Holocaust, the story revolves around a lie that a Jewish boy in Greece tells the people in his community a lie he doesn't know is untrue. "The trustworthy boy is discovered by a German officer, who offers him a chance to save his family. All the boy has to do is convince his fellow Jewish residents to board trains heading to “new homes” where they are promised jobs and safety." In fact, they are trains headed for concentration camps. On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, Albom, best-selling author of "Tuesday's With Morrie," and "The Five People You Meet in Heaven," explains what happens long-term when a deadly lie is perpetrated against a young boy's trusting nature, and how the lie kills more than just trust, but people, relationships and even the soul. Albom's gift is in letting fiction tell the truths about reality. Communities can't survive without truth. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Mitch Albom became a household name with his bestseller Tuesdays with Morrie. His new novel, The Little Liar, is an original and fascinating look at the complexities of truth and what motivates us to lie. It takes place during the Holocaust, at the height of which a little boy tells a lie that affects the rest of his life… coloring all that he is and everything he does. Mitch Albom is the author of books that have sold more than 40 million copies, including eight New York Times number one best-sellers. Several are considered classics like Tuesdays with Morrie and The Five People You Meet in Heaven. Appearing on The Spark Thursday, Albom talked about his latest book -- a novel called The Little Liar,"The Little Liar is a novel set during World War II, narrated by the Voice of Truth. And the little liar is actually a boy who lives in a Greek city who, until he's 11, has never told a lie in his life. And there's a little girl in the town who loves him for it. And then when the Nazis invade, they discover his reputation and they decide to use him as a weapon. And they trick him into standing on the railroad tracks and telling all the people in his town that the trains are going to new homes and new jobs and that everything's going to be good and they should get on them. And he does this thinking, telling the truth and believing that if he does this, they'll let him go back to his family. And only on the very last day does he see his family and the little girl shoved into a boxcar and he finds out that these trains are actually going out, but in the concentration camp and he realizes that the first lie that he's ever told in life is actually going to be the worst lie he's ever going to tell. And the book follows him and the little girl and the family for the next 40 years and shows the consequences of that single lie on that single day and how it affected him, the girl, the family, even the Nazi who tricked him. It ultimately becomes a story about forgiveness and hope against that backdrop. But has the question of the truth and how precious the truth is and what happens when we pervert it." When asked whether the timing of the book's release was influenced by the misinformation and disinformation we're subjected to everyday, Albom responded,"I can't take any credit for the fact that it comes out during a time when suddenly anti-Semitism and echoes of the past are prevalent. Because I started a couple of years ago, no one would have known that. But but I did know that we live in a time where people are choosing their own truth and, they listen to one cable TV channel and don't listen to any of the others, or they read one paper, they follow one through social media thing. And we live in a time where at that famous expression goes a lie told once is easily seen as a lie, but a lie told a thousand times becomes the truth. And, we see how quickly on the Internet and in social media and Twitter and the like, how a single lie can be shot across the world before truth gets its pants on. And and so I thought this is absolutely a time for a book narrated by the Voice of Truth that talks about -- look at what you're doing to me. Look at how you're ruining me and destroying me." Beginning with his book Tuesdays With Morrie, Albom has been viewed as one of the world's iconic writers. Here's what he said about his writing career,"I've had a very fortunate career and it's been very varied. And I meet people who say, Oh, I just knew you from ESPN, I didn't even know you wrote books. And these other people say, I only know you from your books. I didn't even know you covered sports. And so I've had a lot of different lives, but I've been very blessed to meet some very influential people like Morrie Schwartz, who was the story of Tuesdays with Morrie. And I think that that was kind of a turning point in my life when I was able to sit with a man who was dying from Lou Gehrig's disease and hear what was important in life and what wasn't once he was going to die. And I never forgot those lessons that I wrote. I wrote that book not to become a bestseller. I wrote it to help pay his medical bills and to have something personal for me to remember. And the fact that it became a big bestseller was sort of accidental. But it also taught me that those themes are really important to people, and I've been writing books that sort of touch on them ever since. And the fact that they find a wide audience is a blessing. But, I don't think it's me. I think it's the themes that I write about. And, that's why people embrace the work." Couple things fitting into today's show - first thing that caught my eye was a post from a former student. It was about getting through some tough and challenging times and her journey through learning many lessons. I have found myself learning things every day to apply to my own journey through life - and many of these lessons come from my former students. I take tremendous pride in that since I shared with them that I am a life-long learner and one of my many goals for them was to become one too. The second piece that put today's episode together was a post from Mitch Albom, connected to his recent book, "The Little Liar". It's a quote that connected with me - "The heart has many routes to love, and compassion is one of them." Compassion was one of the many messages I got from my former student's post along with another post from someone I follow online, where he was celebrating a milestone of sobriety. So many great things to learn and pick up lessons from out there in the world. Be bold and humble enough to pick them up and apply them to your life. Thanks for listening. This conversation lit a fire in me, and I knew I'd Rather Be Reading was nowhere near finished. Mitch is the author of my favorite work of fiction of all time, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, and his latest, The Little Liar, is just as powerful. It takes us back to the Holocaust, a beautiful tale during an awful time told masterfully by the well-researched and thoughtful Mitch Albom. This show is about nonfiction books, so you know if we have a fiction pick on the show, it's special. That's what this book is, in a nutshell—special, and worthy of a spot on your bookshelf. The Little Liar by Mitch Albom

By understanding dopamine's critical role in human desire and survival, you can understand the powerful effect it has on your habits around food which can help you in your desire to lose weight. Dopamine gives us the will and desire to get up and pursue activities that keep us alive, like drinking water and eating food, by urging us to get up and get them. Without dopamine, we lose the will to survive. Other modern-day pursuits also elicit a powerful effect on dopamine response like gambling, pornography, alcohol, and concentrated forms of food like sugar, fat, and flour. Dopamine is a liar because it can't deliver the pleasure it promises in its urging us to consume. Dopamine only gives us pleasure in the pursuit of consumption, not from the consuming itself. Your brain just wants a steady diet of dopamine and it will urge you to get all kinds of things in order to get it. That's why I say you 'think' you want the cookies, but the brain just wants the dopamine that getting the cookies gives it. Dopamine rewards human brains with pleasure in exchange for the pursuit of consumption. Your brain doesn't give a shit if the fallout from dopamine-driven overeating is making you miserable, it just wants you to keep pursuing your desires. So now that you understand the limitations of dopamine and the hard wiring in your brain for it, you can understand that it can be challenging to change these habits, but that doesn't mean you can't. Tune in to learn exactly how to override your dopamine desires to help you lose weight. Homework: Write down as many ways as you can think of to give yourself new forms of dopamine. Dear QUEEN, I've been dating a 42-year-old man for a while and his sister is one of my old acquaintances from college. I don't use the word “friend” to describe her because she's done a lot of shady stuff lately. She introduced me to her brother, and he started our relationship. At first, he was dating someone else and his sister made sure I knew it. She said she loves his ex-girlfriend but didn't want her dating her brother. I advised her to stay out of her brother's affairs. I had to reiterate this to her after her brother and I started dating. She used to call me with all kinds of rumors and BS about his ex-girlfriend and then would be all up in her face on pictures and videos. I started calling her a “Little Liar” and her brother agreed with me. A few nights ago, I ran into Little Liar at a hookah lounge and she was with my man's ex-girlfriend. I spoke and picked up my food, then I went over to my boyfriend's house. While we were eating, a picture of his sister and his ex popped up on his phone and his sister texted, “We miss you.” So, I called his sister the next day, and I asked why she was taunting my boyfriend with pictures of his ex. She said that my man not only responded with heart emojis, but he also came to have a drink with them after I left his house. She sent me a picture of the 3 of them. I called him and went off and he said it's all a lie and it didn't go down like that. He told me he was going to watch a pre-season game at a sports bar, not to hang out with his ex-girlfriend. I wish he'd told me first because his sister is such a liar. She claims she deleted the texts that my man sent her before he came to meet them at the lounge. What's going on here? Can somebody just tell me the truth? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/unity-queen/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/unity-queen/support
