Logan Tyler Nelson is a former top 10 USA snowboarder who then spent 8 years acting before trying to take his own life after having an identity crisis. He survived and went to be become a prolific podcaster recording over 350 episodes on his show Scratch Your Own Itch about trauma, wellness, mental health and business. He found his own salvation by listening to others. The guests range from Artists, Entrepreneurs, Teachers, Authors, and occasionally Doctors. The truth is we create our own world. Little things become big things. When you justify and allow even little things into your life which your intuition warns you against, you permit a virus to enter your life. It spreads to other areas. When you introduce a change to any system, you simultaneously change the whole system. The other areas of the system will begin arranging themselves to better fit with the new. Going against your higher intuitive voice is a slippery-slope. You don’t realize day to day how out of whack things are really getting. Any small problem or indulgence cannot be viewed in isolation. It reflects something much bigger and much deeper. Sometimes it takes an intense wake-up call to become aware of the signals. But once your eyes are open, and you’re in a place to hear your inner voice, it all becomes painfully obvious. On this episode, I’d like to talk about The Truth Of Finding your so called purpose. Because really...your purpose is simple. It’s to create something that you — and only you — can create. So, the next time you wonder if you’re doing the right thing, just ask yourself this one simple question: What am I creating? Because you came into this world through creation, in the answer to that question lies your divine-inspired purpose. Your unique life. Your unique beauty. Your unique story. There’s something only you can create. To help break this down a bit, here are three simple steps to answering that question. What inspires me right now? When you’re living inspired, you are living “in spirit”. You are living in tune with what you came into this world with. Inspiration is the air that fills you like a hot-air balloon. It’s a natural high that no drug could ever reach. It’s the flow where your life’s work pours out of you like water from a natural spring. What can I create with this inspiration? Out of what inspires you, what can you tangibly create this year…this day? If you’re into setting SMART goals, go for it. SMART stands for goals which are specific, measurable, action-based (meaning you can start right now), realistic, and time-based (they have an end stop). They’ve worked well for me in the past and while I don’t use them all the time, they are extremely useful, particulary if you have a history of not following through. Put it on your screen saver, write it on the ceiling above your bed, or set up calendar reminders to ping you every week to remind you. If SMART goals aren’t for you (but something tells me you dig them), then try this. Just ask yourself every day, “What can I create today?” Consider setting up a daily meditation practice and saying this daily affirmation to yourself at the beginning and end of your meditation (or creating one of your own): “I am living inspired, listening to my spirit, and using my gifts to create.” Who am I serving? From billionaire to pauper, I’ve never met anyone whose source of encouragement comes from material objects. Lust for money, power, or fame can only get us so far. True motivation comes from recognizing who you are serving. Let’s face it. We need encouragement to create. Creation takes a lot of long days and late nights. “Good Job” star stickers may have worked well as children, but they fall flat as adults. And that bonus you get after an annual review? That only works for a while. Deep and meaningful encouragement — the type of encouragement that pushes you to create something that matters — comes from a simple “Thank you.” Knowing that something you worked so hard to achieve in your life had a positive impact on another’s life will take you further than any gold star or holiday bonus. And the funny thing? The more thanks you get for your work, the more people you’ve served in your life, the easier those gold stars and bonuses come your way. What makes one truly successful? That’s a piece of what Logan and I talk about on this episode. Logan Tyler Nelson is the host of Scratch Your Own Itch Podcast. Logan talks about depression, addiction and other mental challenges which are so prevalent in Business Owners and the creative arts.
Here is a small list of some things you forgot about life that just may give you an a-ha moment and seize life like you did when you were young and fearless. 1. Live for you. This may sound a wee bit selfish but take a minute to think about this. This is your life. It’s up to you to do things that bring you joy. The things that make your heart sing. The things that YOU want to do. It’s ok to do those things. If you’re not happy, what’s the point of all of this? 2. Find joy in them. The others. The people in your family. As part of a family unit we are often required to do things that we may not like or love so much but our family member does. If it brings them joy, it should bring you joy. Find the joy in their joy. Contrary to #1, it isn’t always about you BUT when you find joy in the happiness of others, that’s a win win. 3. Happiness comes from the inside Too many of us are still looking for happiness in people, places or things. You may find it in things and places, but that is only temporary. For eternal happiness, you must look deep within. No one can give that to you. Being with a partner may make you happy, but that joy, inevitably comes from in you. 4. Take some freakin risks. Life isn’t just about work, home, family, kids, and soccer practice, wake up and do it all over again. Step outside of your comfort zone. You know that thing you’ve always wanted to do? Go do it. Yes it’s risky and exciting and maybe even a wee bit dangerous. Do it anyway. Live with no regrets. 5. People are, well, people. They come in and out of your life, your whole life. Your high school best friend isn’t and won’t be your best friend in your 50’s or 60’s maybe. Or maybe they are. Some people you meet will make you angry, some will love you. We are all here to learn from each other, grow, evolve, help and love. Really, we’re all the same. 6. You make your guilt sandwich If you feel guilty about something, that’s you’re doing. Nobody can make you feel guilty (or any other negative emotion for that matter) without your consent. You own your feelings. No one else. Anything you feel is a result of your thoughts. 7. Create A Life Worth Living. I’m not a big believer in luck or coincidences. Everything happens for a reason and some as a result of the things we think. You have the power to create what you want in this life. I know that may sound sort of woo woo but it’s true. We aren’t here for a long time nor do we know when our time is up. Make the most of the time you have here. If something isn’t working the way you want it to, fix it, change it or dump it. It’s all up to you. Don’t give anyone power over life to do with it as they please.
Key Points : What Pain Are You Willing To Sustain? Full Transcript: I was destroying my freakin body. I was sore everyday. After the first week I hated it. But I kept going because dammit, I wanted to look like a comic book super hero no matter what pain it took. I signed the line. Chicken scratched my name. And that was it. I was now officially a member of Cardinal Fitness. I was so pumped. I was 120 pounds of skin n' bone. I couldn't wait to look like all those guys you see in the magazines with rippling abdominals, bulging biceps and brass chests. My first workout program I ever tried I ripped out of a Men's Fitness magazine and I knew exactly what I was doing. What if you changed it too perhaps a question you've never considered before; such as: is the pain I'm going through to get what I want tolerable forever? Seriously, what are you willing to struggle for? Because that seems to be a way better guide of how our lives turn out. The reason why people are so fixated on creating a lifestyle brand is because they want freedom, right? Everybody wants to own that business OR have an amazing job and financial freedom — but not everyone wants to suffer through 60-hour work weeks, long commutes, or obnoxious paperwork. People want to be rich without the risk, without the sacrifice, without the delayed pleasure but dammit this is all necessary to accumulate wealth. I don't know one person who doesn't want to have great sex and an awesome relationship — but not everyone is willing to go through the initial tough conversations, those awkward silences, and the potential rejection. Everybody wants to be a famous actor but not everyone is willing to get thousands of deprecating notes from a director, thousands of rejections from casting directors and a super unstable income stream. And so they settle. They settle and wonder “What if?” for years and years until the question morphs from “What if?” into “Was that it?” This is the part that sucks. Happiness requires struggle. The positive is the side effect of handling the negative. To be happy means you took some hits. You shed some tears. You did some heavy lifting. You went through some boredom and problem solving. The thing that human behavior is all about is struggle; our needs are more or less the same. Uplifting experience is easy to handle. What separates the men from the boys.... It’s negative experience that we all, by definition, struggle with. (Hey, I know I'm far from freakin perfect.) The thing is- what we get out of life is not based off the good feelings we desire but by what bad feelings we’re willing to expierence each and everyday to get us to those good feels. Let me hit you with some literal examples. People want an amazing physique. But you don’t end up with one unless you legitimately appreciate the pain and physical stress that comes with living inside a gym for hour upon hour, and you have to love the unsatisfactory of never being able to obtain the physique you want. To put on muscle you have to love eating a little more then you're used to and feeling full like you just ate fat bastard from Austin powers. Or when you're trying to cut some weight you're going to have to deal with feeling hanger pangs every now and then. The one thing that grinds my gears is there's a lot of cruddy advice out there that says, “You’ve just got to want it enough!” Everybody wants something. And everybody wants something enough. The big difference is exposing people to experience the pain that gets them to that overall want and then knowing that no matter how many more wants you do get. You'll desire some more wants. Because if you want the paychecks that buy you mansions, than you have to also want the costs. If you want the beach body, you have to want the sweat, the soreness, the bad body image relationship and the hunger pangs. I know; it sucks but it's just part of the deal. If you find yourself wanting something year after year, yet nothing happens and you never come any closer to it, then maybe what you actually want is a fantasy, a Dream, an image and a false promise. Maybe you don’t actually want it at all. So I know there's some questions I've already mentioned. "How do you choose to suffer?” Because you have to choose something. You can’t have a pain-free life. It can’t all be chocolates and Netflix television. And ultimately that’s the hard question that matters. Pleasure is an easy question. Formulated in another Greek god like way fashion "what pain are you willing to sustain?" That answer will actually get you somewhere. It’s the question that can change your life. It’s what makes me me and you you. It’s what defines us and separates us and ultimately brings us together. At the moment I'm putting Acting on the back burner, why? See, I fantasized about being a actor — a celebrity, in particular. Any badass characters I witnessed in a movie, I wanted to become. I would close my eyes and envision myself in a gigantic theater screen, web slinging my way around New York playing- Spider-Man. People absolutely losing their minds to my presence. This fantasy could keep me occupied for hours on end. The fantasizing continued up through college, even after I graduated. Then reality hit. Auditions didn't pay money. Auditions didn't fill me up with meaning. I didn't like waiting round for another person to judge my acting. I didn't like spending hours memorizing sides only to "maybe get the role." Despite fantasizing about this for over several years, the reality never came. And it took me a long time and a lot of negative experiences to finally figure out why: I didn’t actually want it. Maybe there's an inkling of Wanting to be an actor still in me. Maybe in the future. But as of right now. I love creating this shit for you guys. Whether you love it or hate it. I'm willing to go through that pain to be successful writer, podcaster and YouTuber. I just get more artistic authority with this. I was in love with the result — the image of me being in the theaters, womans jaw dropping at seeing me in real life, pouring their hearts into what I've done for their life — but I wasn’t in love with that process. And because of that, I failed at continuing acting. And that’s super hard to swallow and come to the realization. See, our culture would tell me that I’ve somehow failed myself, that I’m a quitter or a loser. Self-help would say that I either wasn’t courageous enough, motivated enough or I didn’t believe in myself enough. The entrepreneurial/start-up crowd would tell me that I I'm a chicken shit and I didn't risk enough. I’d be told to do affirmations or join another class and spend more money on another acting class. Which is totally cool for those who really want to keep going through that pain. But that's just not for me right now. But the truth is (well, cooked Truth)- is that I'm far less interested in possibly making a good movie, possibly making it on broadway. It turns out that Acting will still be there if I decide to pursue it later when and if I move to Los Angeles. For now; I'm lucky to have an outlet that stills cuts me open emotionally- writing and attempting to fill your minds up and make a damn impact. To those who deserve it. See, I wanted the reward and not the struggle. I wanted the result and not the process. I was in love not with the fight but only the victory. And life doesn’t work that way. Who you are is defined by the values you are willing to struggle for. People who enjoy the struggles of a gym are the ones who get in good shape. People who enjoy long work weeks and the politics of the corporate ladder are the ones who move up in the corporate world. People who enjoy the stresses and uncertainty of the starving artist lifestyle are ultimately the ones who live it and make it. This is not a call for willpower or “grit.” This is not another counseling of “no pain, no gain.” This is the most simple and basic component of life: our struggles determine our successes. So choose your struggles wisely, my friend. Instead if asking yourself. What do you want? Ask yourself. What pain in life- true sweat equity are you willing to endure? If it’s sore muscles- bodybuilding If it’s tedious editing- writing. If patience for the right movie or role in a play- then it may be acting. If it’s taking food and drink orders from rude high class people with fat wallets (totally generalizing right now not all rich people are dicks) then it might be- bartending or Serving. Why planning is the very seed of an entrepreneurs anxiety and how to get rid of it I thought about action. I know it’s weird. Action from that? I thought about my beliefs. And what they mean to someone’s sanity and especially a person with anxiety that also really wants to create a business. The thing is your beliefs, values and psychological rules are all built upon this principle. The decisions you make, the actions you take, and the habits you indulge in, are all based upon this principle. In fact, every part of your psyche is influenced in some way by the pain-pleasure principle. You are therefore who you are today because of how you have interpreted and acted upon the experience of pain and pleasure in your life. And as we all know action always begins with a decision. I’ve been seriously struggling with action lately and I’m just unsure on how to actually follow through. And it sucks! Because I really believe whole heartedly that depression and feeling down stems from not being able to act upon something that you can see in your minds eye but it’s not becoming a reality. SOOO a current pain in my life is ACTION. The economist and author of Average is Over, Tyler Cowen says “The more information that’s out there, the greater the returns to just being willing to sit down and apply yourself. Information isn’t what’s scarce; it’s the willingness to do something with it.” Action is not easy for everyone. Our society promotes learning. People are rewarded more for going to college, entering a trade school or giving up their dreams of becoming a business owner by going back to school. So I thought to myself “Logan, you’re not like everyone else. And your anxiety doesn’t have to be permanent.” People who are really making dents in the world are taking chances. Taking in the pain and feeling the pleasure later. Robert Greene explains in Mastery that the Wright Bros. had a tight budget and were forced to make small, cheap tweaks to each model. They would fly a plane, crash it, tweak it, and fly it again quickly. They didn’t stop after their plan crash. They used that momentum to try again. The Wright Bros. had a hundred test flights in the time it took these big corporations to complete a handful. Every test flight taught lessons – but real practical lessons. Not a lesson of A, B,C, D, or F. The return in failure was hard to swallow but the one who failed fastest gathered the most information. Which is not really a philosophy for education. Eric Ries’ book The Lean Startup. Has says “I’ve come to believe that learning is the essential unit of progress for startups. The effort that is not absolutely necessary for learning what customers want can be eliminated. I call this validated learning because it is always demonstrated by positive improvements in the startup’s core metrics.” Technology has reached a point where actually, building is often cheaper than planning. We can build the thing and know the answer before we can plan for all the possibilities anddetermine how it might work. Ries writes: “The question is not ‘Can this product be built?’ In the modern economy, almost any product that can be imagined can be built. The more pertinent questions are ‘Should this product be built?’ and ‘Can we build a sustainable business around this set of products and services?’” These are questions that cannot be answered in the abstract – they must be tested in the physical world. The key is to make the tests cheap and quickly make small improvements. This applies to everything. Especially your life. Planning has paralyzed me so so many times. I was taught to always have a plan before taking action. That led to a deep anxiety that lead to depression. I didn’t know what career I wanted to dedicate my life to and so I did nothing. I didn’t know what girl I wanted to marry and so I didn’t give any a real chance. I didn’t know what fitness plan was the best and so I stayed out of the gym. Why waste my time right? Wrong! I’ve realized something recently. “Dr Steve maraboli Said by Steve Maraboli. This is so so true. Failing and falling on your face is never a waste of time. And this applies to entrepreneurs. So I believe the very reason entrepreneurs are anxious and fall into depression is because thinking of building a business or improving themselves without actually doing anything. Is the very reason WHY they get anxious So this is a call to action for you and ME. My 5 commandments I will not plan or research until I’ve taken action. I will not make an opinion with new careers and find which ones I hate and which Ones I love before a I experiment. Experimenting leads to experience. Experience in a career leads to dollars. I will not let myself love the most perfect girl until I’ve talked to her. And then potentially create the best relationship I’ve ever had. I will not read anything about fitness until I’ve worked out that day. I will not let myself learn about a new diet until I’ve fully gave it my all on this current diet. With my current health care doctors approval. These are many more we could add to the list of action commandments. But for now. Like not chew more then we can swallow. The thing is most of the time, planning is procrastination. It’s based on theory. It’s going to be wrong. Plans are useless without action. That’s why Step 1 is to take action based on what you already know. Then improve bit by bit. Then begin forming a plan. No one told me when I started my business that Action Allows for exposure. In a good way. Taking action creates possibilities that didn’t exist before. We always look out at our future from the place we’re standing. But we forget that this is only one spot. Imagine this: you’re walking in New York City. All you can see are skyscrapers, neurotic humans, and taxis. You turn down the next street and you’re looking out into the trees of Central Park. A completely new possibility has been exposed. Okay so let’s say, you’re a little overweight then you probably don’t see a possible future where you’re fit. But, after three months of working out and eating well there will be a possible future of physical fitness. These possibilities seem to “come out of nowhere” but they actually come out of taking action. If you’ve only failed then it’s impossible to see the possibility of success. The trick is to keep trying. That next step might be the key to a better future — you just can’t see around the corner yet. Which I know. Is kind of scarey. It sucks. Because there’s no certainty and humans love certainty. But Inaction is Scarier The pain of action is hard. It’s right in our face. Inaction is attractive to us because it’s slow. We can see all the gears moving. We don’t really take into account that refusing to choose is a a choice. Hey you’re not alone. I do it to. But We think we’re safe if we don’t expose ourselves to failure. We don’t appreciate the consequences of inaction because they are slow, frequent, and less obvious. And That’s what makes them worse. You don’t get to escape pain. The pain that comes with action is hard, but it gives you scars, and makes you grow. The pain that comes from inaction is low-grade, makes you soft, and makes you decay, and makes you honestly feel like your not doing anything with your life. Because well, you aren’t. But now you can!! Because Motivation feeds off Action. Just trust me for this moment. Here’s a little story I had zero motivation when I began talking about this. I had nothing to say. So I wrote a blog about action but for some reason I couldn’t think of the words to tell you. It’s filled with words But not that I’m talking to you about why Entrepenuers get anxiety. I can’t stop thinking of new things to say. It’s always like this. I don’t feel like working out until I’ve been at the gym for 15 minutes. I’m too tired to podcast about something until I’ve started. I don’t want to go to the party until I’m there. Motivation (and passion) will follow you if you have the balls to go without them. Action is an Existential I’ve spent a lot my life thinking “what is the meaning of my life?” I’ve come up with a lot of clever answers. Some of them even felt really good and sounded super genius. But the Truth is- The only one that ever really works is disappointingly simple: (do something.) The meaning of my life can only be summed up on paper. Philosophy is like communism. It looks so good on paper but when it’s put into practice and action. It’s for nothing. So what I’m trying to say Is abstract ideals there nice to think about and wonder about but it’s not life. I listened to an interview with Nueroscientist David Eagleman on Impact Theory and the guy blew my mind. He said that “Move your finger when the impulse grabs you.” He reports on his findings in Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain: “Long before a voluntary movement is enacted, a buildup of neural activity can be measured. The ‘readiness potential’ is larger when subjects judge the time of their urge to move, rather than the movement itself.” So! I know that’s kind of mind blowing. Basically what I’m interpreting it as. Is that People make the choice before they were conscious of it. Here’s the thing let’s take Teenagers Teenagers think they know everything because they haven’t tested their mettle. They don’t know anything and so they feel like they know everything. They are just beginning to learn about theories and possibilities. They haven’t done anything so they feel like they can do anything. And not saying I know everything because well. I’m wise enough to know I know nothing BUT Action is so so important. It carries the possibility to bring imagination and reality together. But I think the key is to consistently trying. Most entrepenuers give up their business and end up so dull. They don’t do anything because they believe that it’s probably going to fail. They mistook early failures for a sign that they should stop trying. That’s why they’re bored, depressed, and lethargic. Instead, our failures strengthen us. We should recognize that failures are how we learn and grow. Just ask, “What would Leonidas think? From 300 do? He would keep trucking no matter what. So you might be asking, Logan how do I actuallly take action when I don’t feel like it? I mean I’m human. I get tired. And I think it comes down to systems If you train yourself to be emotionally rewarded for actions taken rather than outcomes you may be able to lengthen the time you can spend in actively “sucking at things” and increase your chances of success. It’s a numbers game. So maybe youth to reward yourself for following your system rather than achieving a goal. Try a system you know will lead to success and follow it. For example. I wrote this outline about actions before I ever turned on the mic. But I love talking so talking is my reward. Or maybe Eating right vs. losing 20 pounds. Building a business vs. achieving financial independence. Going on dates vs. having a successful relationship. When I set a goal of “create 7 podcasts interviews a week” I stopped wanting to podcast and feeling bad about myself. But When I decided on the system of “Podcast about just something small. Like these one person show. I could do this every day” I began a real path to podcast success. That’s the easy step. The next is the real challenge. Go an entire week with zero information consumption. I know I know. It sound rediculous. Especially if you’re a creative a entrepreneur but try it for just 30 minutes. Most people who go through information deprivation swear by it. But Start small if you need to. Stay with me on this. People that are hard core do this for one week: No reading books. No reading blogs. No reading newspapers. No going on Facebook (even just to post). No watching TV (shows, sports, news, anything). No watching movies. No listening to talk radio. No going on Reddit. No going on Twitter. No information input – only output! You have to literally force yourself to spend time with yourself and the people surrounding you. This will, first and foremost, pressure you into action by taking away every activity you run to in order to avoid actually doing the work you know you should be doing. According to Creative Habit by Twayla Tharp this information deprevation will increase mindfulness, increase the respect you have for your own ideas, you’ll have more ideas, unsolvable life problems may begin to make sense, you’ll have an increased appreciation for the news that actually matters, you’ll become more social, you’ll gain perspective, and you’ll become more original. I mean it sounds too good to be true but the only way for you to appreciate this is to do it. I thought of a system for this Information Deprivation- With your mighty phone you can become anxious free Install StayFocusd or its equivalent and put all your time-sucking websites on there. ALL of them! Facebook, Twitter, MySpace (??), reddit, Digg (??), Chive, EVERYTHING! Delete your consumption apps. I deleted Facebook, Pulse, and Twitter off my phone. Delete the apps that you reflexively go to when you have a minute of free time. Move your books and magazines. They will just taunt you if they’re sitting on your bedstand or at your desk. Make a stack and put it out of sight. Carry a notebook with you. You’re going to begin having ideas pop up in your head; make notes of them. I like notepads more than phones because we associate them with creating instead of consuming. It’s risky to take notes on a smartphone if you’re trying to avoid inputs. Take the batteries out of your remote. When you have the urge to flick on the TV you’ll have to go get batteries for the remote. This is a barrier to TV that will save your willpower pool from draining as you stare down the remote thinking about all the Game of Thrones and Mad Men you’re missing. This may be the hardest thing you do all year. The benefits may not be obvious on Day 2. By Day 6 they’ll be undeniable. Your focus will turn to production instead of consumption. You will become a giver instead of a taker. You will see your addiction to novelty and useless information plainly. Remember that this is only 30 minutes but we’re shooting for a week and not a lifestyle. I love books. I love learning new things. I consume information like crazy. And it’s valuable! Information Deprivation Week is about creating a better relationship with information, not denying its importance. Like a girlfriend that you didn’t fully appreciate until she was gone, your relationship to information will be forever changed. You will appreciate quality information and be more able to ignore the rest. You won’t be an addict to useless information. Remember: Failing can be progress if you use it. The wisdom you receive from action often remains invisible. Judge yourself based on the actions you take – not their outcomes. So this is another Mini- sode that I hold super close to my heart. Ititled this show: Dare I say- Losing my mom made me who I am today. Which is honestly not easy to share. But sometimes there’s a difference between things that I want to be done vs things that NEEED to be done. And this is one of those things the I just NEED to talk about. It was the morning after I found out my Mom died…. I was 11 years old and I slept on the leather brown couch we had in the living room. I woke up and began to prepare myself for school that day. I asked my Pops why he wasn’t at work already since he’d usually leave for work before I did. He said “go back to sleep bud.” Confused and filled with curiosity I said “can you drive me to school?” Usually I hated going to school but I felt different that day. That day I wanted to escape from my house; because in this house; well this was the house where my Mom had died. She was only 39 and she died right under this roof that I called home. It just didn’t feel right being there. With apprehension I went back to sleep. It wasn’t to hard going to sleep because sleep was my medicine. It was my only aide in being able to escape from the firm reality that now my Mom was gone. I didn’t cry though for the rest of the day or the next day or the next day or the day after that. I remember feeling ashamed more then feeling sorrow. I felt shame because I made up excuses and lies in order to not visit my Mom in the hospital. Finally the day came…. it was the day of her wake and it took place at QueerHammer funeral homes. I always found the funeral home name to be quite odd because after all it had the word “queer” in it. That’s besides the point. The wake had started and there wasn’t a dry eye in the funeral home except for me. I felt fine. I felt completely fine. Until I walked with hesitation toward my Moms white marble casket and I saw her cold, frozen and lifeless face. Then the flood gates opened up and I began to wail. It was the thought of “I’m never ever going to talk to my Mom ever again” that made me cry for the next few hours. I couldn’t stop crying. I loved talking to my Mom. My Mom and I were very close and every question I had I went to my Mom with. It wasn’t fair that she was gone now. At least that’s what I believed. Losing my Mom created a spark inside of me that forced me to obsess over skills and to become the best I could at those skills. Snowboarding was my first obsession. I would go seven days a week. I would stay home sick from school and still manage to find myself at the park that night. I would stay home from school some days and still find myself with the energy to go to the snowboard park. Then it was Motocross and I was absolutely completely absorbed in that next. After the Snowboarding and Motocross it was fitness and eating healthy. I was obsessed with fitness magazines and trying to get bigger. I didn’t have the best genetics for muscle building but I worked very hard to try and build the best physique I could. I realize now that my life has been filled with obsessing over ideas. When I have a goal in mind I want nothing more then to achieve that goal. That’s why I’ve never worried about being with a girl. I’ve always found it to be secondary. By analyzing my Moms death and analyzing why I am the way I am today it makes sense. I don’t want to leave this world knowing I’ve done it half ass. I’m actually in love with failure because with every step of failure comes a little pebble of knowledge. I’m happier when I’m creating something that isn’t working rather then watching a movie. I’m happier when I’m writing because I know that someone else out their in the world now feels less alone. I’m happiest when I’ve been through something like talking to the Bill collectors or doing mundane tasks like laundry and cleaning because I know that I can listen to my favorite podcast and listen to some knowledge that I can spread out to the world. Finally, I’m happiest when I think about the relationship with my Mom. Even though she is gone right now she still lives inside my imagination and that’s why even when you’re dead; you’re not. My life is like a laboratory and happiness has been the experiment.Everyday is a little bit different. Within those days there’s moments of good, bad and ugly. My only goal is to be in happiness for most of my day. Which is a paradoxical goal. If I don’t untie myself from happiness in moments during my day I will be lodged into believing that being bored or depressed is death. It’s easy to forget that unhappiness is actually a good thing. Unhappiness actually makes us change. Dare I say. Try to be unhappy and you’ll find happiness? Often trying to do something really bad can lead to greatness. Jackson Pollack?? I’m just sayin. Finding weird ways is the way. Rules that worked yesterday might not work today. But at least in making those rules for yourself makes you know that you have rules and that when you are breaking them it makes you effective for taking the temperature of your happiness. Here we go: These Eight ways to stay Unhappily Happy. 1. Money is good. Many other things are better. Money in all honesty has minimal effects on happiness. Lots of money though can make you happy. So be the best in your area. Don’t focus on money. 2. Work on your passion daily I know that’s easier said than done (though not as difficult as you might think), but that doesn’t mean you cannot challenge yourself to find “the zone” and “flow” in other parts of your life. 3. What sort of activities do you enjoy outside of work? Knitting? Acting? Working out? (High five) Playing a musical instrument? Painting? Hiking? Walking in nature? Writing? Pogo sticking? Snapchat? Facebook? Whatever it is find a way to make time for these things as often as possible. Challenge yourself to make room for them in a busy day, for we all know that “I don’t have time” is a big fat lie. For example, I’m currently blocking off time to learn how to use my DSLR. 30 minutes a day; if I don’t make it a priority, I’ll always find some more work to do. And more work isn’t always the better decision. 4. Fasting In an interview with Vanity Fair, President Obama described an interesting strategy he uses to make his life simpler. “You’ll see I wear only gray or blue suits,” he said. “I’m trying to pare down decisions. I don’t want to make decisions about what I’m eating or wearing. Because I have too many other decisions to make.” What President Obama is referring to is a concept called “decision fatigue” and it can drastically impact your ability to make decisions throughout the day. I’m not trying to make you a Fasting Lover but you might find to love this. For me, intermittent fasting provides the same benefit. Eliminating breakfast and not thinking about food until 12pm each day has allowed me to reduce the number of decisions I make in the morning, thus reducing decision fatigue and increasing the willpower I have for the rest of the day. That means I have more Energy, Happiness and more time to put toward doing work that is important to me. 5. Be Radically Honest — Even When You’re a pathological liar. Honestly, I fall into this a lot. I’m not perfect. I don’t pretend to be. But lying can be like a super power. Except it’s a Dark side of the force type super power that leads to more trouble the. Good. If you have some raging feeling toward someone or some completely devastating emotion comes over you, completely release it. Be honest about it. Accept reality. Read my (Accepting reality article). In accepting that you don’t feel well, you’ll find your real happiness, because you’ll be able to process it that much more quickly. It’s not negative emotions we don’t like, it’s resisting them (or anything). 6. Make small talk with a stranger Chatting up your cashier? Chyeah! This is good for you! Behavioral scientists gave a group of Chicago train commuters a $5 Starbucks gift card in exchange for striking up a conversation with a stranger during their ride. (While another group kept to themselves and didn’t interact.) Those who started conversations reported a more positive experience than those who had stayed quiet—even though they had predicted they would feel happier being solitary. The easiest way to meet someone new is to give a compliment or maybe ask a question. So meet some strangers by asking questions. My favorite stranger danger question is: If you could get away with eating any fatty food you wanted for the rest of your life without gaining a pound, what would it be? Or A simple “How do make big decisions in your life?” You’ll be surprised by the answers. 7. Moving meditation When you consider a practice of meditation, you probably envision yourself with eyes closed, sitting cross-legged and immobile. Which is cool and all but many spiritual exercises use postures and movement as paths to contemplation. “It’s multitasking, but in the best way.” Walking Meditation: In walking meditation, called kinhin in the Zen tradition, practitioners move slowly and continuously while staying aware of the body and mind. For this form of meditation, use good posture (just like seated meditation), take deep breaths, and experience the motions of the body. The walking movement should be continuous, so pick a safe place with space to roam around, like a large park or field. 8. Dress up “Dress up for the job you want to have.” -Steven Covey It’s weird but I love this one like I love watching kittens wear mittens. Speaking of clothing: Buying new garb can amp up mood, but a person doesn’t have to drop cash to reap clothes’ benefits. Wearing the color red can boost confidence and self-esteem—which might just be the pick-me-up you were looking for. Wearing a suit for a dude or a dress for a gal even if you’re at home all day by yourself can seriously amp up your mood. 9. Create something Whether it’s through this blog or writing down a list of ideas or even a drawing. It makes my brain come to life in ways that it’s not used to. It’s important here, to never expect results from your creativity. When I was working on my YouTube channel, for instance, it made me very anxious to know whether or not it was going to get accepted by its viewers. I was too attached to the results of the creativity. Just like now I might be too attached to blog traffic. But in any case. Having that little bit of anxiety actually helps boosts the creative efforts. So Was that 9 ways to make you unhappily happy? Logan maybe you should use numbers like everyone else? Nah….. The thing is we never get tired of thinking about happiness, do we? Life is so much nicer when we’re able to couple it with joy. Shooting for happiness though is a paradox. The things your brain is telling you will make you happy will not ALWAYS make you happy. That’s why you should actually listen to this blog and try some of these out. If you’re like me. And you have compulsive indecision. I’m telling you now that you won’t regret meeting a stranger. This one will always make you happy. Who is Logan Tyler Nelson really? My names Logan Tyler Nelson and when I’m not talking about myself I’m doing one of the following- walking, breathing in fresh air, eating, listening to a podcast or an audiobook, rehearsing talks or getting a workout in. I’m ALWAYS- Scratching My Own Itch (A.K.A being curious about people.) I am not going to lie to you though and pretend I’m perfect. I have trained my mind to be really negative on the outside and be positive on the outside. I’ve sabotaged everything good that’s happened in my life or on the contrary. Blamed myself for anything that was good in my life. If I had a good job. I found a way to screw it up and screw myself over. I’ve stolen. Cheated on tests. Lied to friends. And even attempted suicide. When my mom died at age 11 I felt like it was my fault and that I should have spent more time with her in the hospital. When I got honors in college I told myself “well, I’m an acting major. No one fails acting.” With all this truama I felt completely alone. Which led to me trying to take my life. The best thing that happened to me was I found out through the Power of Mental Health that I wasn’t alone. And you aren’t either. You have a dream. Whether you’re a boss, side hustler, creative, fitness enthusiast, or business owner who has dealt personally with depression, adhd, or anxiety. I want you to know you are not alone. And while I do love a good Oprah or Richard Branson quote, I believe we need a little more than that to get us moving. We need a toolbox full of actionable ways to create the life we want, and my goal is to provide people with those tools – so they can start building that life tomorrow. So wait, you might be asking yourself- what exactly do you do Logan Tyler Nelson. Well I am a coach, speaker, writer, and business strategist. I’m an avid investor in projects I believe in. And I love having a job where I can help people find, shape, and focus those things in a way to get more, give more, and overall make A Life Worth Living.
