Today's episode is with Martin DiCuzzo, the owner and winemaker of Magna Montis based in Argentina's Uco Valley. Magna Montis is the first Argentinian producer that Vine Street has ever imported. Ronnie was really drawn to these wines because they're so unlike the typical fruit bomb stereotype of wines from Mendoza. They are super fresh and bright, even the ones aged in oak. If you know the rest of our portfolio that is largely built off the “new wave” ethos – you'll know instantly that they fit right in. The lineup includes three Malbecs – there's the Tupungato, which is fruit-forward, fresh and bright, the Paraje Altamira which is aged in oak and is more classic in its profile, and the Machinte, the most premium wine, which is very elegant and powerful – as well as one uniquely floral and saline Chardonnay. In this two part conversation with Martin, we talk a lot about this new chapter of Argentinian wine. Part 1 is all about Martin's background, including his nearly four year stint living in China working for Bodegas Norton as an Asian distribution manager. We talk about how he got into winemaking without any formal education, and his big hopes and dreams for his country's wine reputation. In Part 2, you'll hear about the praise Martin got from Tim Atkin in his first ever vintage, his experience meeting Ronnie and the Vine street team for the first time – including how Ronnie simply could not believe that Martin had never heard of the Grateful Dead – and of course, we'll touch on the wines and the reasons behind his winemaking ethos. Martin grew up in a pretty quiet neighborhood in a middle class family. His childhood obsession, which turned into something of a lifelong passion, was music. He had a rock band and even started his own company importing music electronics. For much of his twenties, it really didn't seem like wine was anywhere in his future…   Hosted by Charlotte Alsaadi Special thanks to SNACKTIME for the music!  Vine Street Imports Instagram  |  Website

Al and Lisa Brayton of Thirty-Seven Wines join Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country. Their winery is located in the Petaluma Gap, the new AVA in southern Sonoma County that is characterized by its windy conditions. When they chose their winery's name, they wanted to give it a sense of place and since they were located on Highway 37, they chose that number. They also chose a logo, an ancient symbol called the Flower of Life, which is composed of many circles placed close together. Later, they discovered that there are thirty-seven circles in the design. They took this coincidence as a sign that they had chosen the right name. We usually begin tasting with a wine from Dan Berger's extensive personal cellar. Instead of that, Dan has brought a winning wine from a competition where he was a judge earlier today, the Mendocino County Wine Competition. This is the 47th consecutive year of that competition. This wine was served in the sweepstakes round. It is the Navarro 2021 Premiere Reserve Chardonnay. This later was announced as a Double Gold Medal winner, the top wine in its category. It's very good but definitely also very young. All About Albariño Lisa tells about their 2019 Albariño, which they have brought in. Albariño is a Spanish and Portuguese variety that Dan Berger describes as semi-aromatic. Dan describes how it starts out young with floral flavors then changes slightly with a few years of bottle aging, picking up fruit flavors. Steve had a Thirty-Seven Malbec last night and enjoyed it. They didn't bring one but they did bring a Blau Frankisch for later. But Dan says their Malbec is more delicate than other Malbecs especially the Argentinian. The credit goes to their winemaker, Shane Finley, who has been there since 2013. They grow Albariño for their own production but there is very little demand for it in California and hardly anybody grows it. Next they open their 2019 Riesling, Dan's favorite. It starts sweet but the aftertaste is dry. The vineyard is challenging, it's on a southern facing slope and they lost about half of it to a slide. It takes a lot of work in the vineyard. The Wind of Petaluma Gap Al and Dan both talk about the wind in Petaluma Gap and how it influences the grapes and wines of this new AVA. They have average wind speeds of 8 miles-per-hour, to qualify for the AVA. It cuts your yield, makes berry size smaller and makes thicker skins, but those factors increase flavors and character in the wine. Dan goes into detail here, in the 15th minute.

We have been busy!! I have traveling into the town of Healdsburg and recently enjoyed some time with wine maker Greg Morthole at Rodney Strong Vineyards! We have three great new features to share with you and will cover the Pinot Noirs ,Malbecs and a few surprises.Let's check out the website and a few notes on a couple of the wines. We have three new links and please click on the links at the bottom of this feature and join Grag and I as we taste our way thru the great wines of Rodney Strong Vineyards. We have Malbecs and Pinot Noirs to start with. What started with Rod's vision over 60 years segued to an almost four-decade long career of Winemaker Emeritus Rick Sayre at Rodney Strong. Rick passed the baton in 2018 to current Director of Winemaking Justin Seidenfeld, who today leads the passionate winemaking team that creates critically acclaimed wines vintage after vintage with an eye towards the future. That future is led by innovative new products like ROWEN Wine Company, the 15-year passion project on our remote and rugged Cooley Ranch Vineyard. For over 30 years, RSWE has flourished under the leadership of the Klein Family, 4th generation California farmers. The Klein family is committed to protecting and preserving the environment in both the vineyards and at the winery through sustainable farming and winemaking. The history of Rodney Strong Vineyards has roots that stretch back more than 100 years; a tale of families in pursuit of an abiding passion: wine. Greg Morthole is a part of a very talentled wine making team. Tom Klien is part of this great team. A fourth generation California farmer, Tom earned a business degree from Stanford and spent the first part of his career as a management consultant at the San Francisco office of the prestigious global management firm McKinsey & Company. One project during this time was evaluating a small winery in the Russian River Valley called Rodney Strong Vineyards and, in a chance meeting, he was introduced to founder Rod Strong and winemaker Rick Sayre. Already developing an interest in wine, this encounter planted a seed that would grow into a lifelong passion. First let's look at the Malbec. a great wine and a new favorite for many people including myself. Our Reserve wines are the result of a careful blend of individual lots from meticulously farmed sections of some of the very best vineyards in Alexander Valley and in the mountains north of Lake Sonoma. Created in our small lot Artisan Cellar, Winemaker Justin Seidenfeld employs techniques such as cluster pre-sorting and extended maceration. With small tanks and equipment sized for the most discriminating vineyard selection process, our cellar is state of-the-art and represents the Klein family commitment to producing the finest wines possible. For our 2018 Reserve Malbec, select areas within each vineyard are hand harvested, fermented separately and aged in the finest French oak. After aging, each lot is tasted and graded and only the best are considered. The blend is then assembled, and the wine is aged 24 months before bottling. Rod Strong was among the first modern wine pioneers with a vision to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley. In 1968, he planted our heritage River East Vineyard in the alluvial clay-loam soils adjacent to the winery in Healdsburg. Today the Russian River Valley is well established as one of the premier Pinot Noir growing regions in the world, and we continue to rely on the original River East Vineyard as a core contributor to our estate vineyard bottling. We have a couple other wines in our new features, but we will let you discover the great website of Rodney Strong Vineyards. Now let's click on the three links at the botom of this feature and be taken to this feature and click again on each feature as we enjoy hearing of these great wines of Sonoma County! Actually I'm this personality type temperament theory. I've got that in the book personality plus from Florence Littauer she's an American author and have been studying personality for 25 plus years already. And I'm really, amazed with this book because. It has comprised all the behaviors for me to know more about people. So the four personality types, according to her and to the book is that we have sanguine when we call them popular sanguine. When we have the perfect melancholy, the powerful choleric and the peaceful phlegmatic. So there are two impairments and according to Florence she said that every person has inborn temperament. So these are our raw material. This is who we are, but , we are harnessed and being changed through circumstances, experiences, and environment. That's why we create different personality types. So there will be combination of the fourth temperament that makes sense. People  unique and becomes who they are. So that's basically the personality equip the environment theory. Glee: Oh, all right. So there are adjectives  before the temperamental.  could you take us through what comprises, why they are described that way? Khen: I believe Florence need that name  to describe every personality. So for example, a sanguine when Florence, the author made it called popular because sanguine, when personality are really very enthusiastic. They are popular because they become life of the party. So, as we go along, as we thought through with each personality, maybe you would be thinking who are those people? So I'll just share some of the characteristics of sanguinebites. So they are expressly active and they're really loved people.  They get their power when they have a lot of people around them, they are outgoing and. Mostly they're good in telling stories because they are fun. they're inspiring and charming. And probably they're also good on stage because they're really lost people. So, especially when you are outside they're really good in speaking. Also sanguine wins, have memory for callers. So for example, even if it's very basic work like cooking popcorn, they make it more enjoyable. They make people happy and also sanguine twins are like a child. They are wide eyed and very curious, creative and colorful. Also sanguine greens are really cannot say no. So these are the negative things of sanguine Wednesday. You cannot say no, because we are people pleasers. So they want to be people around them and it be in the end, they could not say no, they're always saying yes, even if they don't can handle every appointment that they said yes to. And because of their. Fun, and expressive personality. They make friends easily, but feel your true friends because they forget. So, aside from popular sanguine when they have opposite. So the opposite of a sanguine good person out of the, or the melancholic. So melancholy colleagues actually Are the thinker. So, if this outfit is the Fokker, the "Melan" colleagues are the thinker and the planner because I'm built are these organized, but melancholic, they are organized. There is a story about melancholy in the book that there was this guy who actually go to the office and he could not start working with us even. Aligning all their, all his pencils in the desk. So that's how organized he is. And melancholic are analytical people. They love to analyze. They will love to see graphs and charts. They want to study on their own and they are also neat and diabetic. Most of the colleagues. We really need them to be very serious and purposeful. And the perfect term for melancholia is, or they are perfectionist. They have ideal standards, but also very emotional because they are compassionate and the are, have deep concern with others. And also "Melan" colleagues are the geniuses of the world. So, the best example of that Florence sampled in the book is Michael Angelo, the painter in the Sistine chapel.  If you could imagine Michael Angelou finish that. The painting for four years in chief Suzanne chocolate, because he wanted it to be perfect. So that's there are intellectual and also they are detailed, conscious once straight to the point and they six ideal mate. So that's perfect. My lung colleagues and another personality are the corollary. So. This is another sanguine. When is an extrovert outspoken? Now I'm calling are introverts and Kolarik is another extrovert. Personality. So cholerics are the leaders of the world. They are born leaders. So mostly they get their way the are compulsive and strong-willed. So if you've met people, like they really wanted to have their way, they want to have to do their own way. So they are polarity, they're decisive and cholerics are goal oriented people. So they always wanted to do things their own way and finish it, even if they are not being sensitive or B, because they are focused on the result. So that's one of the downside of being a corollary because different gaps to be sensitive is they want the goals to be done no matter what, whatever it takes. And of course if Neyland are also loves to work, cholerics also loves the work, but they delegate it so they know how to delegate work. And usually they're good in debate. so, sometimes it's scary to find a corollary because they can be very strong. there's also the other personality, which is the exact opposite of cholerics. They are the phlegmatic. So. when they say from the word beast, what very new wanted to make everything peace. So they come the crowd. they have low key personality. So sometimes you see like MAPICS at the back of the background that just listening and observing phelgmatics has many friends because you can never go wrong with the phlegmatics. They're really friendly, easy going and easy to get along with because they both argue. They just always say yes and Black are good listeners. So they listen to you. If you want to, someone to talk to, you can go to Aflac. They're also patients with you and very happy. Yeah. Just easy going. And it has administrative ability. So one of the example that we can give to like Malbecs are the like negotiators or there's a, there is this book I've also read. About hostage negotiators. So these are flat MAPICS because they know how to come and reconcile equal. So that's basically the temperaments and they are opposites and similar.  Glee: I think that even though these types of tests, there are different personality tests out there and. We cannot really label a person for a specific trait, but of course, this just helps us to understand people more, not labeling them, but understanding them. So aside from that, so can you take us through, like, what are the benefits of understanding these personality types as we go through life? Khen: Yeah. I actually, I agree with you when you said D that yeah, instead of changing them, we should understand them. So, basically that's the purpose of the book and the book says understanding yourself. So that you can also understand the others. So the benefit of knowing your personality types is really knowing that you are unique, that we are unique in each of each person is unique. It's combination of your personality is unique. And knowing your strengths, your weaknesses, and who you really are, could really make you understand yourself more. And there is this dating from John Maxwell his his one of the. Well known best-selling author and speaker. He said that successful people work hard in knowing themselves.  If you know who you really are, then you know how to become the best of who you are and, you know, your inner selves improve your personalities. And by doing that, you will also understand and get along with others very well. Probably that's one of the basic benefits that this book gave me personally with my own story, knowing myself I actually took that's 11, 10 or 11 years ago. Yeah. I've read the book when 30 11, so that's 10 years and I tested myself. And it's, it went that I have sanguine wind. And culinary combination. So, but there are not really far like, we have sanguine wind for 16 points and 15 points for clarity. So knowing that I understood that, Hey I want that to go out. I wanted to meet people. That's why I sometimes have a lot of friends and I have a lot of. Appointments troffers or meeting people. And sometimes I could not meet all of them because I, I understood that saying yes, so that I will please people, but I am not that committed in, in my, yes. So. That made me understand that. That's why I could not say no because I'm a people pleaser and I could not relapse because I'm not Teleric I always wanted to be goal oriented. So that's what happened to me. And at the same time, it made me analyze and understand people. Not same as me because. Before, of course you B I understood that. If I'm right and if you want also to confirm that you're the other side of me, you're the introvert, the "Melan" and the Phleg personality. Yes. Glee: Yeah. I'm totally am like, even, I think I took that test before, but I forgot what the combination was, but melancholia is the perfect description for me. So. Khen: Yeah. Yeah. I also agree. So this more, I thought that I should be like you, right? Cause sometimes when we always eat something we don't have. Right. So, it made me realize, knowing the book that I should not copy any other personality and I should be also understand others because they are different for me. And we could leverage each other's strengths. So. Yeah. So that's really one of the benefits. Of this book and thank you for her affirming that my guess is right. Glee: Yeah, I took the test years ago. I think that was when we were talking about it as well, but I forgot the combination, but I'm very sure I'm melancholic. If we're going to take the test today, let's say we've took the test 10 years ago. Do you know if there's a possibility that. The personalities changed or the combination Khen: changes? that's a very good question. My answer is yes, and even the book said that because of our personality though, we have our inborn environments, but we are changed according to our experience, our environment. And sometimes we undergo masks of survival. The book tells us that. For example, if for us, we are a contents, right? So if I am a when, and my work is on that content, so sometimes I copy other personalities so that I could be now land because I contents are really, should be detail oriented. So in the end, probably you will also change your personality. When you took the test, it might change, but you then given a circumstance like an emergency, your true personality will really reveal. If I must sanguine when in my role in that area and I'm becoming Nehlen because of my work, but when I'm given an urgent path, I'll be astounding. My favorite wine is a bold red. I love Cabernets, Syrahs, Malbecs, Petite Syrah and everything in between. The bolder, the better. I would consider myself to be like my fav wine, I would say I'm a bold, confident person, most of the time.I've always felt that my superpower is confidence, or at least seeming confident, and helping others find it from within.  I feel like when we're confident, life is a little brighter, a little easier, and a little more fun. It helps us grow. When we're confident we're more resilient, we're open to try new things, we show up better in our relationships, and we perform better. When I look back at when I was 20 years old and just graduated college with a Bachelor's in Marketing, to where I am today, I needed to be bold, and find my confidence to get here.  I'll be sharing how I did it in this episode, and how I help unlock other people's confidence. I also share a story about my confidence getting rocked, I lost it for a bit but I was able to find my way back.So grab a glass of wine (or drink of choice), and let's open up about building self confidence!

Highlights How does Laura's scientific approach to winemaking improve the taste of the Malbecs you drink? What is the significance of the pyramid-style of the Catena winery? Why is Malbec the flagship grape of Argentina? What differences can you see in the popularity of Argentine wine over the past two decades? What flavours do you taste in Catena Malbec and Cabernet Franc? Why is Malbec so easy for you to pair with a wide variety of foods? What will you learn from Vino Argentino on your journey as a wine enthusiast? How does Vino Argentino help you to but Argentine wines and pair them with food? How does Laura describe her first hundred-point wine, Adrianna Vineyard Fortuna Terrae Malbec? What aspects of the Fortuna Terrae parcel lead to cellar-worthy wines? Why is your Torrontes taste experience uniquely Argentine? Can you taste a difference with high altitude wines? How can you explore new regions through the Appellation line of wines? What advice does Laura have about wine and your health? Why does moderation look different for each person? When did Laura realize she wanted to join the family winery despite her medical career? How did El Nino cause the worst moment of Laura’s winemaking career? What was the best moment of Laura’s winemaking career so far?   About Dr. Laura Catena Laura Catena is a fourth generation Argentine vintner, physician and author. Catena’s great grandfather founded the Catena winery in Mendoza in 1902 after emigrating from Italy. Her father, Nicolas Catena Zapata, often referred to as “the Robert Mondavi of Argentina,” helped facilitate the ascent of Argentine Malbec onto the world stage. Born in Mendoza, Argentina, Laura graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University and has a Medical Doctor degree from Stanford University. Laura combines a strong science background with a passion for her family winery. She is currently managing director of Bodega Catena Zapata and her own Luca Wines in Mendoza, as well as a practicing Emergency Medicine physician in San Francisco. Laura has been called the “face” of Argentine wine. She has traveled the globe to lecture about Argentine wines and viticulture and has been an invited speaker at the American Society of Wine Educators, Decanter Fine Wine Encounter, The Smithsonian and the Vancouver Playhouse among others. In 2010 Laura Catena released her book Vino Argentino, An Insider’s Guide to the Wines and Wine Country of Argentina (Chronicle Books), the first book about Argentine wine by a U.S. publisher. John Harley is our guest this week on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. His label is called Inizi Wines and he specializes in growing and producing Italian varietals in California which are rarely found in the United States. Inizi Wines was founded by two couples, A.J. and Jen Filipelli and John and Kirsti Harley, in 2012. John and A.J. became friends when they were studying Enology and Viticulture, respectively, at Fresno State, and their wives are also partners in the company. The word "Inizi" means "beginnings" in Italian. Their first vintage was 2012, a Charbono. It's an Italian variety that was known for a while in the Napa Valley. It is known for its acidity, dark color and beautiful aromatics. It was known as a good blending grape in the age before the Judgement of Paris, when blends were more popular, and before Cabernet Sauvignon took over. Next they taste a 2018 Tocai Friulano, a crisp white wine very popular in Italy. It is usually grown on steep, rocky hillsides, in Friuli, the region of north-eastern Italy. "You can take the grape out of Italy but you can't take the Italy out of the grape." After they started with Charbono, they continued to plant and produce unfamiliar wines. The four of them have jobs in other parts of the wine industry and they were surprised at how much success they have had. They have a tasting room in Guerneville. They also make three blends, a white, red and rosé, from their Italian varieties. They make a Sagrantino, which is ultra-rare. They also make Montepulciano. Their red blend is their most popular bottling, it has Montepulciano, Dolcetto, Sangiovese, Barbera and a little Cabernet Sauvignon. Dan Berger notices that the 2015 Charbono is dark but has low tannins. John compares it to a cool climate Syrah. John explains that they don't own their vineyards but they work closely with the vineyard owners. They have ancient Charbono vines. There are only about 70 acres of Charbono in the US. They grow Charbono in Argentina, where it is also called Bonarda. (The name Bonarda is also known in Italy.) In Argentina, they use it for blending with their Malbecs. Dan Berger explains that it is not easy to find these plantings of old Italian varieties in California, you have to go out and hunt for them. John tells about his Italian grandfather who started selling grapes in New York on a small scale and eventually grew to a nationwide business and he became known as The Juice King of the US. They also taste a Sagrantino that Dan says is so extraordinary that he would cellar it for 30 or 35 years. Sagrantino comes from the south of Italy and is one of the most tannic wines in the world. It has to be a year in the barrel and two years in the bottle, by Italian DOC standards. His friend Dick Handel has an acre and a half of this on a hill in Dry Creek. "You can take the grape out of Italy but you can't take the Italy out of the grape." Dan compares it to a walk in the forest in the summertime. Sagrantino is the Barolo of the south, says Dan, quoting friend of the show Don Chigazola. John says it could be compared to a Cabernet Sauvignon. Dan suggests having it with roast lamb with garlic. There are only about 10 acres of this grape grown in the US. Dan says it is a hard fruit to work with, you have to use small quantities of fruit and make it gently. John says they had about a ton and a half. They had it in a large open topped container, they de-topped the fruit, it has about 10% whole cluster, to give it a softer structure and aromatics, and that helped kick off its native ferment with its indigenous yeast. They gently extracted the wine, a couple of punch-downs per day. The yeast produces CO2 and ethanol. The skins float to the top. That's where the c0lor, flavors and tannins are, so you want to mix that back down into the juice, 2 or 3 times per 24 hours. This they do manually. The vines struggle on the hillside and that produces really concentrated ...

Robert Larsen is back with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country today. He has brought the Grenache and Grenache Rosé from his personal label, The Larsen Projekt. Robert Larsen is also a publicist with many years experience in the wine business. The 2018 Rosés are coming out now and Robert has brought his entry. Dan Berger starts with a big compliment to Robert's wines. "The most important thing is, it's dry!" says Dan. It sells for only $20. Dan says that with the Rosé boom, some are pricing above $20 which Dan says you can get if it is dry. Robert Larsen was at Rodney Strong Vineyards for many years and now he does marketing and public relations representation for many other wineries. The Larsen Projekt is his personal production. He likes Grenache in all its blends and forms. They are tasting his 2018 Grenache Rosé from Dry Creek Valley. Dan says that Grenache gives you a red wine floral as opposed to a white wine floral. It is dry, with more than 7g of acid, it goes great with seafood. The fruit comes from Mike Saini Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley, for the Grenache Rosé and red. He has a team of winemakers who are former colleagues. He uses the Healdsburg custom crush facility. Dan says the Saini family knows something about Grenache. They grow aggressively and the vines must be pruned well. "It is luxurious and beautiful," says Steve. Robert Larsen Projekt wines are available at the Larsen Projekt website. Previous vintages are mostly at restaurants. Wilabee's and Oliver's carry them retail, and the restaurants Franchetti's,  Jackson's, The Pullman Kitchen and Bistro 29 also do. Robert Larsen started at Sonoma State University but before their wine business program was developed. He took an internship at Glen Ellen Winery. He still works with some people he met there. He was at Buena Vista, and also in Monterey County and Mendocino, but always came back to Sonoma County. Dan says Grenache has lower tanins and therefore more approachable wines. Demand for it is increasing and more growers are planting it. It was originally called Bonarda and was made as a blender to cut the tannins in the Malbecs in Argentina. The Bonarda is related to an Italian grape, originally. The Grenache is an offshoot variety grown in the Rhone Valley. It is the dominant grape variety in the Southern Rhone Valley and an important component in Chateauneuf du Pape. Most of the Grenache around now was planted from 1994 to 1998 or younger. They grow very tall fronds early in the growth season and you have to cut it way back. Too much fruit makes flavorless wine. The 2018 Grenache Rosé will be released in the next two weeks, on the website. The 2017 Grenache is blended with a little bit of Syrah, about 13%. Dan says this is Grenache as it wants to be, when it is a varietal. This one, from California, has lower tannins than a European variety. There are 13 legal varieties used in southern Rhone wines, which make up Chateauneuf du Pape. There are people who can not abide Cabernet Sauvignon because the tannins are too strong, so they drink Merlot instead. If you don't like bitterness in your wine, this is the wine to buy. Robert Larsen's production is small, only 250 cases of the Grenache Rosé. But he only made 75 cases of the Red Grenache.

Jed Steele of Steele Wines is our guest today on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger, with Pete Foppiano sitting in again for Steve Jaxon. Jed Steele has been making wine for fifty years and Dan Berger has known him for a long time. Jed's colleague Rusty is also in the studio today. Dan remembers that Jed made the first Ice Wine in California in 1975 and again a year later. It was made from Colombard grapes and they had to picked the grapes at 5am. They start by tasting a Pinot Blanc from the Bien Nacido Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley in Santa Barbara County. They make the juice there and chill it to 35 degrees then ship it up to Sonoma County for production. He uses all old French and Hungarian barrels and goes through Malolactic fermentation. Dan says Pinot Blanc is under-rated. Jed is making wine from Lake County, especially his Cabernet Franc. It’s not at all like Cabernet Sauvignon. Jed’s tasting notes include honeydew melon and Dan agrees with that. Jed Steele makes between 500 and 1000 cases of this. Dan thinks scallops would go well with this, or anything delicate, to match the delicacy of the wine. The tasting notes also mention green apple, and Dan also notes some lemon. The marketplace has changed in the last 3 or 4 years. Millennials are looking for a diverse selection of varieties and styles. They want things that are not common. The traditionally top selling Chardonnay and Cabernet are still selling but not as much as a few years ago. As people are reaching out for diverse wines, Pinot Blanc is a good one to fill that bill. Jed’s first vintage as a head winemaker was 1974. He consulted for 15 years to Chateau Sainte Michelle and also for the Fess Parker family. Dan says that if you’re looking for forward-thinking, modern style winemaking with mature vineyards and some grapes that are not particularly well-known, that’s what Jed is doing. Jed mentions Blaufränkisch and Aligoté. Next they taste the 2016 Pinot Noir from a vineyard that was first planted in 1998. Dan likes the slightly Burgundian characteristics. “These grapes have finally settled down.” Jed tastes bing cherries and Dan tastes light blackberries, which is rare in Pinot Noir. There is no noticable oak. It is all fruit. It has so much vibrancy that you will want it on the dinner table. Dan calls it white wine with color and Jed agrees. The grapes are from the Sangiacomo vineyard. They lament that the wine trade and buyer demand tend to favor newer wines, which is a shame because that sacrifices the time that it takes for wine to mature and develop. Now to illustrate good aging, they have a 1997 Syrah which Dan says is fabulous. It has not lost any of its fruit, the acid is still holding it together and the tannins have subsided.  Barry asks Rusty about it, who notes that 22 years ago Syrah was rare in California. Jed remembers that 1997 was his favorite harvest ever. There was a perfect storm of weather and they got quality and quantity. The aeration is helping it too, and the complexity comes out after about 20 minutes, without sacrificing the fruit. Dan says it's not available anymore but Jed says he has a case or two left. Next they pour a Malbec. Pete notes that it's not a widely produced wine. The Argentine Malbec is popular, because it's inexpensive, but they are one-dimensional, all fruit. But we are getting a better understanding of how it should grow. This one is from Lake County. There is a little blueberry note. The grower has 800 acres of Cabernet and 10 acres of Malbec. Dan says that California Malbec has a vibrancy that other Malbecs do not. Jed Steele uses French, Hungarian and American oak. They wrap up with a dessert wine, a 22-year-old white wine. It has aromas of dry peaches and apricots, with pineapple notes. It has high sugar and alcohol and Jed didn't know that it would age this well. Dan Berger says this is an example of a wine that younger buyers today are interested in,
