A Cork in the Road
Episode 137 - Diane Carpenter, Ross Knoll Vineyard

A Cork in the Road

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 30, 2024 64:33

This episode features Diane Carpenter of Ross Knoll Vineyard discussing the process of preparing for retirement and producing the final vintage of her Ross Knoll wines. Her transparency and honesty is incredible to hear as she talks about the journey of planting a vineyard, starting a wine label, and ultimately deciding it's time to close that chapter and move into retirement. Diane was born and raised in the United Kingdom and moved to the United States in 1987 to be with her now husband, David. Living in New York City, she had access to some of the country's greatest wine schools and took the opportunity to learn more about the world of wine as an academic. Her first classes were with the American Sommelier Association, followed by the Society of Wine Educators and then she even started to pursue the prestigious WSET Diploma. Eventually, her education led her to the vineyard working harvests in California with winemaker, Paul Hobbs. In 2014, Diane purchased a property in Sebastopol, CA and converted an old paddock to a vineyard of 3,000 vines of Calera, Diane's favorite clone of Pinot Noir. She co-produced Ross Knoll wines with consulting winemaker Justin Seidenfeld since the first vintage in 2019, and now, after four celebrated vintages, you'll hear what decisions and life events have led to the decision to wind down in preparation for retirement. There is a very special wine, however, made in honor of the Atlanta wine community that will be released as part of the fifth and final vintage. You can follow her @yourwinestylist and @rossknollvineyard on Instagram. Texas State University's Colleen Myles, an associate professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, joins the Big Ideas TXST podcast to discuss her research into the social interplay between craft breweries and the communities they reside in.The contemporary craft brewery boom is having a broader impact on U.S. culture than simply providing an array of beverages to consume. Those small, independent craft breweries are increasingly active participants in their communities' environmental and social sphere. These breweries often take up and champion local causes, becoming powerful agents of advocacy for sustainability initiatives, wildlife conservation, public spaces, defending the rights of marginalized populations, fighting hunger, homelessness and a host of other causes. Almost half of craft breweries engage in some form of social advocacy, bringing to bear on local issues the innovation and independence for which these businesses are known.  Myles is a rural geographer and political ecologist with specialties in land and environmental management; (ex)urbanization; (rural) sustainability and tourism; wine, beer and cider geographies (aka fermented landscapes); and agriculture, inclusive of urban, peri-urban and “local.” She holds a level 1 certificate in wine from the Wine Spirit Education Trust, a specialist of Texas wines certification from the Texas Wine School and is a certified specialist of wine by the Society for Wine Educators. She completed her Ph.D. in geography and her master's in community development both at the University of California-Davis. She earned her bachelor's with a double major of liberal studies and political science at Sonoma State University.  Further reading:Fermented LandscapesCraft breweries are fermenting change, addressing local ills while serving local ales

This episode features Sommelier Jason Wilfore, the recent champion of our "Unusual Suspects" Blind Tasting Competition here in Atlanta, GA. He was born and raised in Schenectady, NY and got his start working in the restaurant business as a server and singer at Romano's Macaroni Grill. He later worked at Provence in Guilderland, NY which focused more on traditional French and Mediterranean cuisine that also sparked his interested in wine and beverage followed by working at Grappa '72, another local upscale family-owned restaurant that focused on Northern and Southern Italian cuisine. He moved to Atlanta in 2016 and started working at South City Kitchen in Vinings as a server and bartender. He says that as his curiosity for beverage grew, his beverage manager suggested looking into the Introductory and Certified Courses and Exams with the Court of Master Sommeliers, and the Certified Specialist of Wine certification with the Society of Wine Educators. He passed both the CSW and Certified exams in 2019, and he transferred to Ecco in Midtown where he was able to merge his French/Italian/Mediterranean experiences and start building some knowledge in Spanish cuisine and beverage. After eventually getting promoted to Beverage Manager, he started learning the business/logistical aspects of a beverage program. We talk about his move to Marcel, which meant a shift from a management position to be able to work at a fine dining restaurant with an extensive wine program and continue his development while working with and learning from the sommelier. Currently, Jason is working as a sommelier at Mujo, and we talk about the unique setting in which he is now applying his wine knowledge and creativity. The second half of the episode is devoted to debriefing about the blind tasting competition - Jason walks us through his thought process and strategy for each of his calls, and the dialogue is both entertaining and educational. Welcome to episode 1375, another episode of “On The Road Edition”, hosted by Stevie Kim. In this episode Stevie sits down with Charlie Arturaola at Wine Cube, an event organized by Partesa. More about today's guest: Since he ran away at the sound of gunfire at a soccer match and hid in an empty wine barrel Charlie Arturaola has been a wine lover. When he put his nose to the wood he smelled wine, the wine to become his life long passion. As a world-renowned sommelier, Charlie has one of the ten best palates in the world according to the American Wine Association. One sip and he can tell you the history of the wine, the soil the grapes grew in, the wood of the casket, the amount of sun the grapes enjoyed, and how long it was fermented. It's a rare gift and has served him well as he went from Santo Domingo to the Cunard Lines to Wine Director of the Boca Raton Resort and Club. Now Charlie is the president of Grappolo Blu, and speaks about, judges and assesses wine for clients around the globe. Sipping and spitting from New York to Napa, from Vienna to Beijing, Charlie informs, educates and entertains wine lovers in five languages, winning countless hearts and awards, including the Chevalier by the Ordre des Coteauz de Champagnes, and in 2012 the International Wine and Spirits Communicator of the Year. Charlie loves working with young people and mentored students of hospitality in the fine points of wine at Johnson & Wales University and Lynn University. He is also a member of the Society of Wine Educators, American Sommelier Association, Associazione dei Sommeglierie Italianne, and the American Society of Appraisers. He is on the board of directors for Toast to Humanity. Knowledgeable, convivial, and with a large following, Charlie was one of the founders and chairmen of the Mendoza Wine Festival. There he was discovered and, along with his wife, Pandora, became a movie star in a “fictional documentary,” El Camino del Vino. This led to many travel opportunities, where I always found myself near wine regions. Upon exploring this fascination for what goes into the bottle a new passion was ignited, and I've never looked back. The sessions are recorded and uploaded on Italian Wine Podcast. wine2wine is an international wine business forum, held annually in Verona Italy since 2014. The event is a key reference point for wine producers and a diverse variety of wine professionals eager to develop and grow their wine business worldwide. About today's session: The Hispanic consumer in the US (defined as people with origins in Latin America or Spain) is a significant segment of the US market both in terms of size and economic importance. Wine consumption among US Hispanic consumers has grown considerably during the last few years and represents a large, untapped opportunity. Hispanics have close cultural, linguistic, and culinary ties with many winegrowing countries and share similar values. However, the industry faces several challenges to accelerate this growth. Hispanic wine educators have the potential of acting as a bridge to reach these consumers with culturally relevant initiatives, training, and resources About the Speaker Alberto Martinez Interiano IWA Alberto Martinez Interiano is a VIA Italian Wine Ambassador, wine educator, and writer based in Seattle, WA. At one time, he worked for Advintage Fine Wine before going on to devote his time to building Brazos Wine Imports.  Brian graduated from CU, Boulder in 1998 and he became a Certified Specialist of Wine with the Society of Wine Educators in 2004. In this episode… The wine industry is blessed with the ‘curse' of too many producers who offer a wide variety of wines to choose from. Some are popular, while others are comparatively less known. These growers and wineries  who have yet to gain wide-spread recognition represent not only the wines they produce but more importantly, their culture and regions. And wine importers are at the forefront of spreading the goodness from these regions locked in bottles of wine.  Brian Ravitsky is one of the importers who brings the best of homegrown wines from South America to the United States. He introduces the American market to an unknown map of wine indulgence. Join Alexi Cashen on this episode of the Alexi Cashen Show as she talks with Brian Ravitsky of Brazos Wine Imports about all the wonderful things that South American wines have to offer. Tune in as Brian shares his journey in the wine industry, what drives his company and what sets them apart from competition, and his insights on what to expect from the wine industry post COVID-19.
