Jeanne Manford was an elementary school teacher and hardly an activist. But she had a gay son, Morty, who she loved fiercely. In 1972, the two of them walked together in a New York City gay pride parade, and Manford held a sign that read “Parents of Gays: Unite In Support for Our Children.” It was a revolutionary act. At that time same-sex attraction was classified as a mental illness, and “homosexual acts” were illegal in 49 states. But Manford insisted on publicly loving and accepting her son, and with her husband Jules and son, she founded an organization inviting other parents to do the same. That organization, Parents, Family, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays or PFLAG celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. We look at the impact these families' activism has had and we hear from you. What does it mean to support those you love? What does it take? Guests: Kathryn Schulz, staff writer, New Yorker. Schulz's most recent piece for the New Yorker, "How One Mother's Love for Her Gay Son Started a Revolution," chronicles the founding of PFLAG. Schulz is also the author of "Lost & Found: A Memoir" Avril Swan, granddaughter of PFLAG founder Jeanne Manford. Swan is a physician and practices in San Francisco Lilith Rose, former executive director and current program director, San Francisco PFLAG chapter Susan Thronson, board president, PFLAG National

It is Sunday, October 13th, 1918, and the Great War is on the brink of ending in Europe. The world is deeply scarred and families have been irreparably shattered. But for one young woman named Louise Knox, all of that seems very far away. For she is sitting in a horse-drawn buggy that is driving through a dying, backwater town named Amelia in the heart of the bayou in southern Louisiana. Her strange uncle Manford passed away five months ago, and the deed to his home is in question. The bank is looking to appraise and potentially repossess the property, depending on its value. Little is known about her late uncle, but rumour has it that he built a house on the land where he once survived a hurricane, and that his privacy was due to his fondness for young gentlemen callers. As a young woman without a husband or children, she has been asked by her cousins to set aside her passion for photography and make the trek across the country in order to settle the estate. She has apprehensively agreed, and is now out of her element. She has been traveling for days and is dog tired, but she grows ever closer to the property in question. Having never met her uncle, she can only wonder what awaits her. She clutches her minimal luggage and the camera and handgun hidden within it as she leaves the pathetic waste of the near-abandoned town, and watches the swamp begin to intrude upon the narrow logging road that leads to her destination. Nearly cut off from the world, the niceties and pleasantries of modern society are left as a distant rumour for a place so far removed from civilized life. There is no electricity out here to help her keep her fear of the dark at bay during the night, and there is certainly no telegraph or telephone. The air is humid and thick, even in this time of year, and the swarms of insects and cacophony of animal noises seem to be everywhere. For the hundredth time, she checks her scribbled note to confirm that she is supposed to be meeting a lawyer named Mr. Speltzer, but her nervous energy is largely in part to her eagerness for answers and adventure. The buggy bounces and rocks as she comes now within the final mile of the curious estate of Manford Madison.... Our first interview is with Ken Manford of the Family Pride organization. Ken and his partner Jeffrey Roach adopted their son from Guatemala at the age of 6 months. Next we will have Jeffrey Reid Baker on. I am quite excited, most podcasts use creative commons licensed. Ours is fortunate in being able to feature some exciting music from a friend that I hadn’t had contact with in over 35 years Jeff is a musician who is both gifted and renown and is from my hometown living a mere 4 blocks from where my grandparents lived while I was growing up. You heard one of Jeff’s pieces as part of John Selig Outspoken’s introduction and you will hear small snippets as segways between different segments of the show. We will also feature one of Jeff’s pieces in its entirety as part of each podcast. Jeff will be introduced by my lifelong friend, Les Moore, whom I have known for over 40 years. I know, I know, what a great name … Les Moore. I am going to have Les introduce Jeff since it was her brilliant idea to Jeff and I team up together. It has been a real thrill for me to get back in touch with Jeff. He has a sharp mind; a keen wit and I know that you are going to enjoy his music as much as I do.
