We open the episode with more great publishing news—a trend we hope never ends! After that, we get into the episode proper with a review of L. Stephenson's new horror novella, The Boy at No. 9 Whitlock. At first it was bad parents, bullies, and budding romances. But the tragic life of young Matthew Rose is about to get much worse...because the boy who lives at No. 9 Whitlock is about to meet a demon. "One of the darkest coming-of-age horrors I've read. Grizzly and unrelenting. I wanted to look away, but I couldn't." - KEV HARRISON, Author of Shadow of the Hidden & Below "Stephenson shows that horror isn't all about sending chills down one's spine; sometimes, it can be about moving the heart." - REBECCA ROWLAND, Shirley Jackson Award-nominated Author of White Trash & Recycled Nightmares You can purchase the novella now on Amazon. Matthew Rose is a scholar of religion. He's currently Senior Fellow and Director of the Barry Center on the University and Intellectual Life — a project of the Morningside Institute — and he previously taught at Villanova. He's written for magazines such as First Things and The Weekly Standard, and his newest book is A World After Liberalism. It's an examination of five far-right thinkers, from Julius Evola to Sam Francis, who are proving increasingly influential in post-liberal conservatism in America. It's the first of several episodes in which I hope to explore more deeply the radical alternatives to liberal democracy being touted on the right. Think of it as a balance to my focus this past year on the illiberal alternatives being touted on the woke left. Get full access to The Weekly Dish at andrewsullivan.substack.com/subscribe

This is part two of a two-part podcast. For part one, visit this link: https://www.wgte.org/radio/podcasts/classical-conversations/celebrating-willis-patterson-part-one We hold a listening party in honor of Dr. Willis Patterson's upcoming 90th birthday, with performances from throughout his legendary career as both a singer and an educator. Joining us are Dr. Louise Toppin, Instructor of Voice at the University of Michigan, and Dr. Patterson himself, former Associate Dean and Professor Emeritus at UM. Dr. Toppin has organized and curated this year's African American Music Conference at UM (Sept. 18-20), and tells us about the many virtual offerings centered around Dr. Patterson, who is the conference's featured guest. Dr. Patterson helps introduce his recordings on our program, and talks about his life in music – much of which involved advocating for African American composers and performers. In 1963, Dr. Patterson famously wrote to NBC television complaining about their practice of using a white singer in blackface for the role of King Balthazar in the televised opera Amahl and the Night Visitors (Menotti). To his surprise, NBC invited Dr. Patterson to audition, and he was selected to play the role himself. While some musical selections have been truncated due to copyright (for purposes of this downloadable podcast), we hear a modern arrangement of Three African-American Spirituals composed by Matthew Rose (and posted here by permission). Dr. Patterson draws a direct correlation between the three spirituals and the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police. It's that time of year again... our highly anticipated SEASON FINALE is here- Part 1 of 3, that is. In Part 1, the PodSquad welcomes on three graduating Brock Sport Management Students to the show- Jake Matthews, Natalie Hamel, and Matthew Rose! The three panelists first talk about the mindset that has helped forge a successful tenure at Brock U, ranging from creating a positive attitude/culture, committing to open-mindedness, and a willingness to try new things, even if they may be outside of one's own comfort zone (5:48). They discuss how they were able to find certain niches in the sports industry that they were passionate about (and would hopefully like to pursue as a career) during their four years at Brock (8:02). The panelists also talk about things throughout their SPMA tenure that have helped the most in their professional development, ranging from club involvement to volunteering for a wide variety of organizations, regardless of which niche and setting. (13:12). Finally, the panelists "time travel" back to first year in 2018-19, and offer their "first-year" self some words of advice (22:39, probably the best part of the show in our opinion), as well as share some final thoughts to wrap up Part 1 (30:37). Thank you to Jake, Natalie, and Matthew for joining the show and being an awesome panel for Part 1! A huge shout-out to Jackson Pretli for co-hosting again! Keep up with the podcast on social! Getting the world vaccinated and ending the pandemic is a political choice: World leaders have the medical, technical and financial capacity. To produce enough vaccines involves three clear steps: getting intellectual property monopoly barriers out of the way through a temporary WTO TRIPS waiver, technology transfer through sharing the recipes, and funding global production so the world is not reliant on a few monopoly sources. With this year's United Nations General Assembly now underway and President Biden's upcoming COVID Summit around the corner, the U.S. has a powerful opportunity to end the pandemic. Unfortunately, the targets for Biden's COVID summit exclude making a final deal on the TRIPS waiver or any others steps to share vaccine recipes with the world so more shots can be produced. To discuss all of this, we are joined by longtime HIV and social justice activist Matthew Rose, who leads U.S. policy and advocacy work at Health GAP and has been deeply involved in the fight for the TRIPS waiver. Relax with a calming mix of music and natural sounds - from a tiny Scottish Hamlet to the coastal paths of Devon, via Antwerp and Kenya. With field recordings by Chris Watson, Matthew Rose, Callum and Kate in Southwest Ross-shire and Jane and Tim from Plympton, Devon.
Matthew Rose started studying music at school in West Sussex before going on to study at University in Canterbury, where he worked with Benjamin Luxon and Sheila Amit. After a precarious car journey to Urbania in Italy, he took part in a programme - surrounded by many, more experienced singers - that changed the course of his career. Soon after he was one of very few students studying at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Pennsylvania, where he immersed himself not only in the programme but in the surrounding musical environment - from local concerts to weekly visits to Carnegie Hall and the Met. Going on to join the Vilar Young Artist's Programme at the Royal Opera House, and making his Glyndebourne debut with Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Matthew's career has gone from strength to strength, seeing him on stages from the Met to the Royal Opera House, from La Monnaie to the Deustche Oper among many, many others. With the John Christie Award and a Grammy alongside his many incredible achievements, Matthew gives a frank insight into his road to success. We talk with book artist Barry McCallion and replay part of a 2009 interview with Matthew Rose about A Book About Death. The post Barry McCallion, Book Artist of The Oarsman & Matthew Rose, A Book About Death appeared first on Writer's Voice.
Chad Dundas’ debut novel Champion of the World was a 2016 Boston Globe Best Book of the Year as well as a finalist for the David J. Langum Sr. Prize for Historical Fiction and Reading the West Book Awards. His short fiction has appeared in the Beloit Fiction Journal, Sycamore Review, Sou’Wester and Thuglit. Since 2001, he’s worked as a sportswriter for outlets such as ESPN, NBC Sports, The Sporting News, Bleacher Report and the Associated Press, among others. The Blaze-Having lost much of his memory from a traumatic brain injury sustained in Iraq, army veteran Matthew Rose is called back to Montana after his father's death to settle his affairs, and hopefully to settle the past as well. It's not only a blank to him, but a mystery. Why as a teen did he suddenly become sullen and vacant, abandoning the activities and people that had meant most to him? How did he, the son of hippy activists, wind up enlisting in the first place? Then on his first night back, Matthew sees a house go up in flames, and it turns out a local college student has died inside. And this event sparks a memory of a different fire, an unsolved crime from long ago, a part of Matthew's past that might lead to all the answers he's been searching for. What he finds will connect the old fire and the new, a series of long-unsolved mysteries, and a ruthless act of murder.
Matthew Rose’s mind is a mystery. Especially to himself. A bombing in Iraq has left the former soldier with a traumatic brain injury, and now he can’t be sure about anything. The past is a cloudy haze to him, filled with jumbles of impressions and not many solid memories. Unfortunately for him, that could have deadly consequences for his future – how can he protect himself from a killer when he can’t even trust his own mind? That’s the pulse-pounding premise of THE BLAZE, a mesmerizing new novel from author Chad Dundas, who garnered massive acclaim for his 2016 debut novel, Champion of the World. After leaving the Army, Matthew has trouble acclimating to life back in the States. His head wound means he doesn’t remember major events from his own life, but even worse, major relationships feel unfamiliar to him as well. He knows he should love his mother, for example, but she seems like a stranger to him. The heartbreaking scenario is rendered even worse when Rose receives the news that his father has killed himself. Forced to return to Montana where he grew up to settle his dad’s estate, Matthew is on shaky ground. He knows his parents had divorced long ago and that he and his father had stayed in communication, but they weren’t close, and he doesn’t know why. Soon, his faulty memory will become a problem that could spell his own doom. It begins with a deadly and suspicious fire. Shortly after returning to Montana, Matthew takes a late-night walk to clear his head and witnesses a massive blaze that burns down a house and leaves a local college student dead. It’s a terrible tragedy, but even more troubling, the event stirs foggy recollections inside his brain, about another fire in this town many years before…and perhaps his own connection to the person who started it. CHAD DUNDAS has been a sportswriter for ESPN, NBC Sports, the Associated Press, Sporting News, Bleacher Report and other national and regional outlets. His short fiction has appeared in such publications as the Beloit Fiction Journal, Sycamore Review, Sou'Wester and Thuglit, and he is the author of Champion of the World, which was named a Boston Globe Best Book of 2016. A fourth-generation Montanan, he earned his MFA from the University of Montana and lives with his wife and daughter in Missoula. Matthew Rose—the protagonist in The Blaze, Chad Dundas’s new mystery—sustained a traumatic brain injury while serving in Afghanistan, so when he returns to his hometown to settle his father’s affairs, it’s as if he’s someplace he’s never been that is also strangely familiar. He meets up with Georgie Porter, an old friend who was actually... Read more »

This week, I was struck by the change in the world as well as the stability. We find ourselves in a seemingly endless tide of change, but we see certain themes shine through that seem to be inevitably tied to our human nature. We will see that in our story today. 1. 'Everyday Objects': Tiffany & Co Selling $9,000 Ball Of Yarn, $1,500 Coffee Can by Joseph Curl from The Daily Wire 2. Why We Still Love Agatha Christie’s ‘Murder On The Orient Express’ 40 Years After Her Death by Jessica Burke from The Federalist 3. Do Americans Shame Too Much – Or Not Enough? by Peter Stearns from Intellectual Takeout 4. The Surprising Revolt at the Most Liberal College in the Country by Chris Bodenner from The Atlantic 5. Our Secular Theodicy by Matthew Rose from First Things All music from Audionautix.com.
God was pronounced dead by Time Magazine fifty years ago—and now He’s deader than ever, according to Matthew Rose. Joining Rusty and Julia, Matt argues that our present age was heralded in 1966 by the Death of God theologians, who viewed secularity as the highest development of Christian ethics. Julia then interviews Rusty about his new book, Resurrecting the Idea of a Christian Society. Our culture is falling apart—which is good news and bad news, according to Rusty. Why is he optimistic that Christians will be the leaven in an increasingly decadent society? Finally, Julia hosts a game of “Stump the Editors” with Rusty, Mark, and Matthew. Play along and test your knowledge of literature! Musical credit: Dave Brubeck.
Darkness is never far beneath the enchanted surface in Benjamin Britten’s version of William Shakespeare’s comedy. In this podcast Julie Sanders Professor of English at Newcastle and Professor Mervyn Cooke of the University of Nottingham explain how Britten’s rendering of A Midsummer Night’s Dream manages to be both exceptionally faithful to its source, and one of his most imaginative works. We also hear from Dame Felicity Lott and tenor James Bowman who performed in Sir Peter Hall’s iconic production of the opera when it debuted at Glyndebourne in 1981 and bass Matthew Rose who has performed the role of Bottom in the same production. Presenter: Katie Derham Produced by Katherine Godfrey for Whistledown Productions for Festival 2016 Music from the Glyndebourne Label recording of A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Ilan Volkov conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
