Getting the world vaccinated and ending the pandemic is a political choice: World leaders have the medical, technical and financial capacity. To produce enough vaccines involves three clear steps: getting intellectual property monopoly barriers out of the way through a temporary WTO TRIPS waiver, technology transfer through sharing the recipes, and funding global production so the world is not reliant on a few monopoly sources. With this year's United Nations General Assembly now underway and President Biden's upcoming COVID Summit around the corner, the U.S. has a powerful opportunity to end the pandemic. Unfortunately, the targets for Biden's COVID summit exclude making a final deal on the TRIPS waiver or any others steps to share vaccine recipes with the world so more shots can be produced. To discuss all of this, we are joined by longtime HIV and social justice activist Matthew Rose, who leads U.S. policy and advocacy work at Health GAP and has been deeply involved in the fight for the TRIPS waiver. Today on Sojourner Truth, our weekly roundtable. Our guests are Laura Carlsen, Jackie Goldberg, and Dr. Gerald Horne. The fight for the future of U.S. domestic policy. The Build Back Better Act. Bernie Sanders is not backing down from his push for spending $3.5 trillion. President Biden says the U.S. is at an inflection point and this investment is needed now. But Senator Manchin is in the way. So is the filibuster. Senator Manchin wants to cut the proposed Build Back Better Act figure in half. But that doesn't fly with Senator Sanders and other progressives. Democrats need a big win given the midterm elections in 2022. Some are saying that President Biden's Build Back Better Act is the largest social program proposed since FDR's New Deal. Is the Build Back Better Act a U.S. version of Democratic Socialism? As we mark the 10th anniversary of Occupy Wall Street, will conservatives on both sides of the aisle insist that the U.S. continue on the path of unfettered prioritization of the market over the care of people and the environment? Meanwhile, conservatives are complaining that jobs are not getting filled post-COVID. This, as some workers are refusing work that doesn't pay a living wage and is destructive to their bodies. Conservatives blame Biden's COVID relief subsidies that people are not taking jobs they don't want blame corporate greed. Lessons learned from the California Governor Recall Election. What do California Democrats prioritize now? What are the implications on the national scene? On U.S. foreign policy, is the influence of Washington waning? Recently alienating the EU, including France, and the U.S. seems to bypass traditional allies to cut a military deal with Australia and the U.K. against China. Europe, meanwhile, is trying to carve its own path in a post Angela Merkel era.

On Thursday, President Joe Biden was unsparing about the burdens that the unvaccinated have thrust onto the rest of us: thousands more dead, overflowing hospitals, a rebounding economy showing signs of retreat. Pandemic politics, as Biden called it, are not simple. But eight months into the crisis, any new set of rules offered by the president raises an obvious question: Why didn't he do this already? The White House calls it a 6-point plan, but there were two big new things that Biden announced: — Vaccinations: Biden is finally leveraging the unilateral power of the federal government to expand vax mandates to some 100 million Americans: all workers at companies with over 100 employees, all federal employees and contractors, anyone who works for a health care provider that receives Medicare or Medicaid reimbursements, any employee at a school that receives federal money from Head Start and a few other programs. — Testing: Biden is using federal authorities to surge the production and distribution of rapid Covid tests, including at-home tests. Raghu Manavalan is the host of POLITICO's Playbook. Jenny Ament is the senior producer for POLITICO Audio. Irene Noguchi is the executive producer of POLITICO Audio.

In the wake of yesterday's FDA approval of the Pfizer shot, Biden's Covid advisor Anthony Fauci has blasted back onto the television screens, screeching that while he likes freedom there are times we must give up freedom...and take the shot! As Afghanistan unravels, is this dramatic ramping up of authoritarianism at home meant to be a distraction?

It took a week of protests, media pressure and one Marion McKeone podcast to tip Andrew Cuomo over the edge and into resignation. This week Marion and Jarlath examine what exactly happened to force this supposed street fighter to wave the white flag. His half-hearted apology gets an autopsy and Jarlath asks if Cuomo is positioning himself as the Democrat Trumpish outsider candidate. Does he still have fans? Unsurprisingly, yes. Marion looks at the state of Biden's Covid vaccine rollout and the LiveLine returns with Gareth Murphy getting in touch with a scandal that many may have missed from 1863. Kansas Senator Roger Marshall wants the DOJ to investigate ESPN for possibly breaking the law while trying to break up the Big 12 Conference. This is nice that Marshall is trying, but we get the feeling this is going nowhere with the Biden DOJ. The president is having a bad week as Ron DeSantis has just obliterated Biden's Covid policy as hundreds of thousands of illegals are allowed to walk into America. And the White House press corps ask questions if Biden should be investigated independently just as Governor Cuomo was. Ouch. The NFL is moving closer to daily testing of players, which is nuts. And it appear the players union is on board with it. Sporting KC blasts LAFC and takes over first place in the west and we'll introduce you to one college Athletic Director that seems to have more character than most.
President Biden's Covid coordinator said in a recent press conference that incentives to people to take the shot are not enough. It's time for some "requirements" he said. Biden himself said that he is looking into whether the federal government can force all of America to take the shot. Tyranny? Also today - the strange continuing case of Jan. 6 police suicides. Coincidence?

Roger Severino, Senior Fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC), shares how President Biden's COVID-testing mandate violates civil rights law. Jen Psaki is at it again as she ridicules a clueless reporter. Is a democratic landslide in the making. Valedictorian slams Republican TX Lege. Once again, a reporter bore the brunt of the press secretary's sarcasm. Jen Psaki all but ridiculed her for diminishing Biden's COVID-19 success. This valedictorian is not only very book smart. Most importantly Texas' draconian laws forced an otherwise politically quiet person to use her large stage to admonish an evil law passed by a party moving us back to the dark ages. Her parents have got to be extremely proud of this young woman. Too often, we succumb to narratives that are based on all the wrong parameters. Democrats are poised for a 2022 blowout win. Lakshmi Sunder answers the question: How does Biden's Covid-19 Plan Compare to New Zealand Prime Minister Ardern's Plan?
A stark warning came from CDC Director Rochelle Walensky during her COVID-19 briefing today. Walensky fought back tears, saying she was scared about the, "impending doom," of another surge of Coronavirus in the United States. She urged people to take precautions for a little while longer to allow more time for the vaccine distribution process? So, what implications does this have on California? To discuss further, KCBS Radio reporter, Mike DeWald, along with KCBS Radio news anchors, Patti Reising and Jeff Bell, were joined by, Dr. Celine Gounder, Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, also a former member of President Biden's COVID-19 task force. He is the author of several books including his most recent, McMindfulness: How Mindfulness Became the New Capitalist Spirituality. Purser's essays and other writing have appeared in the Huffington Post, Alternet, Tikkun, The Guardian, and elsewhere. Purser explains how neoliberal gangster capitalists and other plutocrats have distorted and cooptated “mindfulness” for profits and ultimately as a tool for creating a passive, isolated, weak public of consumers and passive citizens. He also shares what he learned about how “mindfulness” apps are actually created not for reasons of helping users but to make profits for huge companies. Chauncey reflects on questions of freedom and government and how Biden's COVID-19 stimulus bill may in fact be one of the most progressive and positively transformative acts of legislation since the Johnson administration. Dan Lazare, investigative journalist, author of "America's Undeclared War" joins us to discuss the rocket attacks on US installations in Iraq. A day after Iraqi private militia units vowed to take the gloves off in the Middle East, a barrage of rockets struck a US installation in Iraq. Has the Biden's administration's decision to attack Syria unleashed a deadly wave of attacks and reprisals? Also, the Pentagon has released footage of Iranian missiles striking a US installation after the assassination of General Qassem Ray McGovern, former CIA analyst and co-founder of the Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity, joins us to discuss the latest round of EU/US coordinated sanctions against Russia regarding Alexey Navalny. The Kremlin argues that the prosecution of Alexei Navalny is an internal issue and that the EU and US are meddling in their affairs. Also, the Social Democratic Party, a key member of Germany's ruling coalition, has said that it wants to see the country take a different approach to relations with Russia.Neil Clark, journalist and broadcaster, joins us to discuss Julian Assange. Australian federal Labor leader Anthony Albanese is reported to have argued against the imprisonment of Julian Assange in a closed meeting with his caucus. According to persons present at the time, Albanese responded “Enough is enough, I don't have sympathy for many of his actions, but essentially I can't see what is served by keeping him incarcerated,” when asked for his opinion on the matter. Albanese has not come out with a similar statement on the record.Chris Hedges, an investigative journalist, returns to enlighten us about his latest article, "The Age of Social Murder." In his article, Hedges posits that the ruling elite class is well aware that their failure to address climate change will lead to human destruction. He says that the deaths of millions due to their reckless behavior effectively means that they are murdering every human being on earth. Hedges finishes his piece by arguing that "A decade from now we'll look back at the current global ruling class as the most criminal in human history, willfully dooming millions upon millions of people to die."Scott Ritter, a former UN weapons inspector in Iraq, joins us to discuss Iran. The Biden administration is making a number of moves that seem designed to doom the nuclear deal. Israeli officials are bragging that Biden will consult with them before making any final decisions of re-entering the agreement. Also, Russia's Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov has warned the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) against adopting a resolution against Iran at a session of its Board of Governors.James Carey, editor and co-owner of Geopolitics Alert, joins us to talk about Afghanistan. Despite a 20-year bloody slog and no progress, two former US Secretaries of Defense are arguing that the US needs to continue its occupation of Afghanistan. Mark Esper and Robert Gates claim that leaving troops in the war-torn nation is the least bad option. Also, Ron Enzweiler's latest article argues that the occupation of Afghanistan "is and will always be a lost cause." Ajamu Baraka, the 2016 US vice-presidential candidate for the Green Party, joins us to discuss Venezuela and Haiti. Secretary of State Tony Blinken spoke to US-backed Venezuelan politician Juan Guaido, claiming that he is out to return democracy to the besieged nation. As with many other foreign policy positions, the Biden administration has decided to stick with the Trump administration course on Venezuela. Also, Canada is supporting the position of the US empire and working to deny the people of Haiti an opportunity to replace US puppet dictator Jovenel Moise.Jim Kavanagh, a writer at The Polemicist and CounterPunch and author of "The American Farce Unravels: Shreds of January 6th," joins us to discuss the US COVID economy. Eleven House Democrats have authored a letter to president Biden pushing him to make recurring payments to US citizens as part of his COVID relief bill. Also, Biden's COVID bill does not extend the national ban on evictions, and homeless activists fear that millions of Americans will suffer eviction and homelessness in the near future.

The U.S. Senate, with Vice-President Harris casting the tie-breaking vote, passed the joint budget resolution that will enable Pres. Biden's COVID relief package to ultimately be passed under the reconciliation process, meaning a simple majority vote. The House will follow suit almost immediately and while Biden and the restaurant industry were big winners, Bernie Sanders was not. His proposal to include a $15/hr federal wage increase was rejected, and then some. We'll take a look at all those moving parts. And despite all the focus on corporate behavior and social responsibility, a lot of companies are playing hardball and fighting back on new laws and costly mandates. We'll take a look at the grocery sector's fight against hazard pay requirements and how the platform companies are taking the fight to politicians as well. We'll discuss those issues and wrap it up with the legislative scorecard.
