“Surrender is not a moment; it's a posture I've had to return to again and again.”With these words, Julie South describes the ongoing journey she's walked since her daughter Bellah's homegoing. In this second part of our conversation, Julie shares honestly about living with PTSD, how trauma has impacted her family, and what surrender has looked like as she continues to walk with God through grief. She also reflects on how her grief has evolved nearly six years later, why simple practices like worship rooted in Scripture and putting up the Christmas tree in October have become anchors of hope, and the significance of the phrase “the best is yet to come.”Julie shares encouragement for moms who are just beginning their grief journey and talks about the new While We're Waiting support group she and her husband, Scott, are preparing to begin in Florida. This conversation is tender, honest, and full of reminders that even in the darkest seasons, God holds us fast.Click HERE to learn more about the Sibling Lifeline retreats for adult bereaved siblings. “Even in the halls of the hospital, God showed me I was not alone.” I'm excited today to introduce you to my friend Julie South. In this first half of our conversation, Julie shares the story of her daughter Bellah—a joyful, compassionate little girl whose life was marked by both laughter and serious medical challenges. Julie talks about how her daughter Makaylah's health struggles prepared their family for medical adoption, how God led them to Bellah, and the joy Bellah brought to their home.We also discuss what it looked like to navigate countless hospital stays, major surgeries, and ultimately a five-organ transplant—and how God's presence was evident even in the darkest hospital hallways.Next week, in Part 2 of our conversation, Julie will share about her experience with PTSD after Bellah's homegoing and how she is now coming alongside other grieving parents to bring hope and encouragement. I know you will be blessed by what she has to share in both episodes! I would love to hear your thoughts on the show. Click here to send me a message! Autumn and Hunter discuss an article by Ian Harber called “The Christian in a Therapeutic Age.” Harber contends that while therapy terms describe real struggles, their overuse has turned treatable conditions into fixed identities. Amplified by social media, this therapeutic culture isolates people and worsens anxiety. In contrast, Christianity grounds identity in God, tells a story of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration. Committing to Christian practices - prayer, worship, Scripture, sacraments, community—nurtures resilience and belonging.Resources mentioned in this episode:The Christian in a Therapeutic Age by Ian HarberIs Today's Self-Help Teaching Everyone to be a Jerk? by Emma GoldbergHow Anxiety Became Content by Derek ThompsonHabits of the Heart by Bellah, Madsen, Sullivan, Swidler, and Tipton

“Queenie” the series is based on the best-selling novel by Candice Carty-Williams. Queenie follows the story of Queenie Jenkins a 25-year-old Jamaican British woman living in south London, straddling two cultures and slotting neatly into neither. After a messy breakup with her long-term boyfriend, Queenie seeks comfort in all the wrong places and begins to realize she has to face the past head-on before she can rebuild. I recently caught up with “Queenie” Author and Executive Producer Candice Carty-Williams, along with stars Dionne Brown who plays “Queenie” and Bellah who stars as “Kyazike”. We discussed this relatable and funny coming-of-age story and what it took to get this brilliant story told. I spoke with Queenie stars Dionne and Bellah about their roles and Candice shared with me what she hopes viewers will feel after watching “Queenie”. Created by Candice Carty-Williams, “Queenie” is executive produced by Carty-Williams, who will also serve as showrunner. Non-writing executive producers are Further South's Steve November and Sarah Conroy, with Lisa Walters as co-executive producer and series producer. The series is produced by Further South Productions in association with Lionsgate TV. All 8 episodes of “Queenie” will debut on June 7th on Hulu. The one where you're descendant from escaped enslaved Africans who joined forces with the Seminoles in the 1700s Emma and Nicole speak to Caitlin Bellah, a photographer and artist who shares the story of her linage and how she was inspired to investigate it by this very podcast. She is a descendant of the Freedmen who are mostly blood descendants of the Seminole people, free Africans, and escaped former enslaved people who allied with Seminole groups in Spanish Florida in the 1700s. Many have Seminole lineage, but due to the stigma of having mixed origin, they have often been categorised as former slaves or freedmen in the past. Cailtin shares the investigation into her past and how this drives her art and sense of self, but also the challenges personally and professionally. In the 1970s, sociologist and religious scholar Robert Bellah predicted neoliberal economics would create a hole in many communities that would one day be filled by an authoritarian populism. Bellah also made famous the idea that as America lost its Christianity, it would create a so-called civil religion.

Join Eythen Anthony and Ana Knudsen, cohosts of "From the Archives," as they look back, re-listen, and reconsider past talks, lectures, and speeches given at the Center for the Study of Law and Religion at Emory University. Today, they listen to a lecture by sociologist of religion Robert Bellah called "Marriage: Sacred Institution or Obsolete Tyranny?” In his speech, Bellah responds to what he sees as the modern opposition to institutions. He believes that in modernity, there is a popular idea that institutions are inherently oppressive, or that all of our inherited traditions are unexamined and backwards. Bellah disagrees with this. He argues that institutions are absolutely essential. Without them, he claims, we would all be dead. "What's particularly interesting," says Ana, "is the way Bellah argues that institutions are necessary. The institution that Bellah uses to illustrate his point isn't actually the institution of marriage. Instead, he bases his argument on the institution of language." Listen now. This thing called the Great Resignation is gaining more and more attention in the United States. People have resigned from jobs in record numbers in this year alone, with one reason being that people are not treating work as the Ultimate anymore. At one point, not too long ago, generations before had their minds set on securing a job. That was the ultimate goal: job security. People in this current society are more invested in developing and prioritizing other parts of their life. More value is placed on purpose these days. People look at what they are missing out on or tolerating and aren't willing to make certain sacrifices for work without purpose. Such work and sacrifices no longer seem worth it. Similarly, you know your calling is bigger than your job or career. How can we look for ways to support a calling through a job or career? We're going to discuss three ways to look at your paid work. Ideas in today's conversation mainly pull from research by Dr. Robert Bellah and Dr. Amy Wrzesniewski. Dr. Bellah was a sociologist in the 1950s who suggested that work has three orientations, and Dr. Wrzesniewski, from Yale, conducted a study that confirmed these orientations. The three orientations are job, career, and calling. Identifying this will help as a guide for discovering where you are at, and where you can go. Each orientation has distinctions attached to an award. Most times we are connected to a job for material gain. In a career, we pursue a goal with the long-term in mind. Work in calling means we can live being who we are, and the reward is fulfillment. At the most basic, we really should consider work that comes from an intrinsic place, like calling. You don't have to quit in order to live out your calling, but know that you have potential to turn work into a calling more than you think. Time stamps: [00:20] - I talk about feedback I received about last week's episodes. Let's dive deeper into the relationship between work and calling. [02:50] - Your next brave step may look different, but you should have an idea of the big picture. [04:23] - Work can be viewed as three orientations: a job, a career, or a calling. [06:08] - Job, career, and calling give us three different rewards. [09:07] - What is the reward of viewing work as a calling? [11:34] - If you were to identify your work, which orientation relates most? [13:39] - It's okay to work a job, as long as it's under this one condition. [15:54] - How do you turn work into a calling? [17:20] - Here are quick tips you can take action on to shift your work towards calling. [20:11] - I wrap up the quick tips that help you make an actionable shift from work to calling. [23:08] - We're more likely to work on our calling when we participate in relationships that fuel our efforts. [24:34] - Use the tips in this episode to decide what could be your next brave step.
